I have been going to Shortys for almost 40 years. Today was only the second time I was disappointed. I orders a Half chicken dinner. The chicken was SOOO small. I usually eat a 1/4 and take 1/4 home. Today I ate the whole thing with no problem. It's a shame that instead of raising the price $1 they decided to lower the quality of their product. Went to shortys bbq for a quick dinner with the fam. Expectations were low due to said barbecue joint being in Florida, was pleasantly suprised with the food and was happy with the service. About 6 hours later things took A MAJOR turn for the worst. Threw everything up from the night before, and anything i tried to eat OR drink within the next day. It was AWFUL, ive never experienced food poisoning like this before and im writing this to warn those who want to visit this restaurant. The first time I went I held off on writing a review because I just wasn't sure... After a second time I realize that all my previous BBQ experiences have been better. The first time I name on the weekend and parking was scarce. And it was a 10-20 minute wait. The second time was during the week, and parking was no problem and no wait. Both times the cashier/host were friendly and easily accommodated baby cart. My favorite dish has been the half chicken and the hubs really enjoyed the brisket. The brisket comes with brisket sauce and something in a cheese shaker that the waitress said was bbq sauce. Aside from this being a very strange way to serve any sauce, I have no idea what I would call it. The texture was a bit gritty and had a very smoky flavor. I gadgets been warned that the bbq sauce has high fructose corn syrup in it...and that I can overlook, but I tell you fellow yelpers there was not even a hint of sweet in this salty mixture. Confused I went to the bottle on the table that was much closer to bbq sauce. There aren't any full southern meal here either. You get French fries with your sandwich, but if you want traditional mac n cheese, bbq'd beans or even a corn muffin, that is all extra. The first time we went I ordered a corn muffin, they advertise it all over, but it is not like any corn muffin I've had before. It was very bland and I did not order it a second time. The bbq'd beans only come with pork, since I don't eat pork, I will never know what they are like. I'm used to a vegetarian option on the menu. The seating is interesting. There are extra large picnic tables in addition to your regular seating. I don't like picnic tables at a park, so for sure not interested for dinner. This place is not the greatest, but it isn't too far and I did enjoy the chicken. I will most likely be back again. read more

We ordered ribs, 10oz burger and 2 brisket sandwiches. The ribs and burgers arrived and the waitress apologized and said they were out of brisket. I wish they would have told us before the other meals arrived! So we asked for sandwiches that would arrive quickly, pulled pork and beef sandwich. The ribs were dry, the burger was very big and juicy and cooked rare just as I asked. The pulled pork was good and the beef sandwich was smoked and tasted good, but needed bbq sauce which was brought separately. Shorty's feels like Austin & Gruene barbeque excursions, but tastes like dirty down home southern BBQ. I ordered a share of baby back ribs - a full rack, barBQ chicken, smoky sauce, hot sauce, corn on the cob, which came with a fragrant coleslaw that turned this non-eater of slaw into an inquisitive maybe fan of slaw. Also, baked beans. Our waitress, Denise, warned that the smoky sauce was smoky smoky. Like the bottom of a grill, I assessed. Coupled with a pitcher of Michelob ULTRA LIGHT, musings, and a yelp ready 4GS cam, Shorty's night was a very nice experience overall. PRO TIP: Do try the smoky sauce, and ask for the hidden hot sauce. It's there, and worth it. read more

I ordered the brisket platter with sweet potato and coleslaw. The food came out quickly. I like the quality of food and it was clean. I use to come to this place all the time to me this place was the best BBQ. So I live about a good 35-40 minute drive. Idk why or how I decided to make this drive but I did. Got there found parking immediately idk if that was a good or bad sign lol. We got greeted and seated in about 2 minutes which was great. Gloria was out waitress and she had an awesome personality. As an appetizer we got cornbread and the homemade onion rings. The corn bread was awesome but was a bit disappointed that it was made out of a box, yes I asked. The onion rings were ok, not well seasoned actually very plain. For an entrees we got baby rack ribs and a pulled pork sandwich with Texas toast. The toast is plain under seasoned, the pork was seasoned well but dry. The baby back ribs were good tender came with Texas toast cole slaw and french fries. The fries were crinkle cut and good. You can't really mess up fries thou. Cole slaw was good and sweet and you already know how I felt about the toast. Gloria came with warm water to clean our hands. 11/22/21 Monday evening: Okay for what it offers, could be better. Arrived to Shorty's BBQ, where there are Plexi glass screens between booth tables during this time of COVID-19 precautions (which is a plus). Staff is nice. Food was okay. Ordered the brisket, which tasted well without their smoked house sauce (which is provided on the side for your choosing). I prefer the regular sweet BBQ sauce. The ribs were not grilled thoroughly (found the meat red at the core of the rib when pork needs to be cooked well). Even so, the ribs were still not juicy nor tender (did not fall off the bone). The BBQ beans were flavorful but also dry (the sauce/liquid of the bean was not thinned out). Beans were more like a paste texture. The toasted bread that comes with the meal was superb, it was buttery and had garlic for flavor. Wouldn't recommend as a favorite dining place, but if in the area and hungry, it can serve its purpose to satisfy the hunger. read more

I am so disappointed to have to post only a two star review for Shorty's. I have lived by this restaurant believe it or not since it opened. I have not been in a very long time decided to take the family for dinner tonight Craving barbecue. I guess I should start from the beginning. The waitress and staff were very nice. The ambience also enjoyed. My wife ordered a chicken wrap which was mediocre the baked beans were just OK. I ordered the baby back ribs and smoked chicken combo. The baby back ribs were good not the best but they were good. They were served with Shortys sauce which I felt was way too vinegary and had a strange twang to it. The smoked chicken was very dry and did not have that nice pink smoked barbecue ring around it the way it should have. My son had the spare ribs from the children's menu and it was like eating leather. Now comes in my opinion the most disappointing part of our experience at shortys. We go to the register to pay our bill my wife and son went into grab some small Andy's mints the kind that come for free at every other establishment on earth and are placed on pillows in hotels during turn down service. Believe it or not they charge you five cents per little chocolate mint!!! This is one of the cheapest things I have ever seen. Either give them for free or just do not offer them to customers. All of this being said I will not be going back to Shorty's ever again unless every barbecue place within 15 miles of my home is shut down. read more

Been patronizing Shorty's for years. It's a Davie icon. The place is always clean and the staff is friendly. I love that some of the people that work there have been there for years. That says a lot about an establishment and the management. I usually enjoy the pulled pork and or chicken and an occasional baby back rib. All are always delicious and juicy. Never have we ever been served something dry and overcooked. Their sides are the typical, baked potato (sweet too), cole slaw, mac n cheese, etc and are all that, typical and good. We never miss an order of well done onion rings. Can't pass those up. My only complaint is that I love green beans, especially with BBQ and they do not offer them. Just for that reason, we will get BBQ elsewhere sometimes. But other than that, delicious and priced right. read more

Kinda wish there were 3.5 stars...as it wasn't quite a 4. Let me start off by saying that I have been here 3 times and we have ordered the same thing all 3 times. We get the sparerib family meal for 2...for the 3 of us. It comes with plenty of ribs, chicken, sliced pork, sliced beef, fries, corn on the cob, baked beans, cole slaw and garlic bread. We all hate coleslaw. 1st time we didn't sub for anything.....2nd time we got a 2nd giant portion of fries...3rd time we asked if we could sub for a corn on the cob. We were told could only sub for fries or bread. We only wanted 1 ear for our daughter. He subbed a sweet potato for the coleslaw and offered to cut one of the ears in half. It worked, but weird. Corn is really not that expensive (I just bought 10 ears for $10 at Publix). We added on macaroni and cheese. Ribs come out dry and you add the sauce. Husband disappointed that they don't have a spicy BBQ sauce. Ribs are good and tender. Chicken this visit was a bit dry....but daughter liked it. I never like the pork or beef...I find it dry. Husband likes it. Love the baked beans...happy my husband and daughter don't like baked beans at all...more for me. Mac n cheese is delicious and plenty for the three of us to share Fries....okay...1st time, too light...so 2nd time I asked for well done...they were perfect....3rd time oops, our server didn't hear the well done. Service...service there to me is hit or miss. Our 3rd visit was the best visit. He offered BBQ sauce to take home with the left overs. He brought a better container for the left over Mac n cheese. Stopped in for dinner after passing this place many times. I wish i has stopped in sooner. I had a baby back/spare rib combo with sweet potato, and a side of mac n cheese. Both spare rib and baby's were cooked perfectly, lil bit of char, firm, but not tough, full of flavor. They provide 2 BBQ sauces, one sweet and the other was a tangy.. i honestly didnt like the tangy, but the sweet, was delicious. Also a nice treat was the mac n cheese, most BBQ places bake there mac n cheese till its all dried out... but not shorty's, it was very creamy and exploding with cheesy goodness! Sweet potato was also very good, but its kinda hard to screw up a baked potato.... all in all this is one of the better BBQ joints ive been to in south Florida. I'm not the biggest fan. I don't want to give it 1 star, because the staff is incredibly nice, but... the food isn't where it should be. For a restaurant who constantly pats itself on the back for how "legendary" and "award winning" their food is, every time I go there, the food is bland, unseasoned, and tough. I don't know if this is tradition, but putting BBQ sauce in a seasoning jar is just inefficient and a huge mess. The brisket is good, but the sauce that comes with it is not the cooking juices. My fries were soaked from the juice from the beef, which made them mushy. Had to wait 15minutes for my food after my party of 6 got theirs. And to top it off , I asked the cashier if she could just ring me up for a slice of cake , since I didn't eat my food. The barbecued beef sandwich was tough and tasteless even after I poured lots of sauce on it; the barbecued pork was equally bland and the coleslaw had no flavor at all. We ordered potato skins and baked beans for an appetizer; the four tiny potatoes were pretty good but the teeny, tiny paper container of beans, looking and tasting like they came straight out of a Campbells can, were a joke. How could they dare charge almost four dollars for what amounted to three forkfuls? The waitress asked us how the food was and when we told her "not so good" she just shrugged, handed us the check and left. After my last disappointing meal at Shorty's about 15 years ago, I was forced to visit again for a family member's birthday.  Pretty much just as disappointing as I remembered it.  This is the only BBQ restaurant you can walk into and not smell a hint of smoke coming from the kitchen.  That's not a good sign. Last time I was there, I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and it was literally the same pre-made pulled pork that I was buying in plastic tubs at BJ's Wholesale.  Not similar...exactly the same.  So that was pretty much when I figured out Shorty's is not a legit BBQ spot and swore the place off. My most recent visit I decided to try the brisket...and it was just as awful as I expected.  Aside from being dry, tough and bland, it was great...although I am still trying to figure out how they get a smoke ring into a piece of meat with zero smoke flavor (Morton's Tender Quick?).  The fries it came with were slightly undercooked which was disappointing.  The coleslaw....eh, I won't rip on them since very few places pull off good coleslaw.  And the side of baked beans I ordered, they tasted like they were straight out of a can with some pulled pork pieces and BBQ sauce thrown in.  Not worth paying extra to get them in my opinion. What was odd were the two sauces which were delivered to our table with the food.  One was a "brisket sauce". Not sure who came up with it or thought it added something to the flavor of the meat, but it was not good at all.  The other sauce was a special "homemade BBQ sauce".  Pretty sure one of the main ingredients in that sauce is pickle juice which was awful. What was most bizarre was that it was served in the type of shaker they would serve parmesan cheese in at a pizza place. Trying to get it out made a mess. Will I go back?
