Shorty's Bar-B-Q has catered our employee holiday party for several years, a hospital of 3500 employees. Chicken, ribs or a combination of each are the proteins of choice. This year they ran out of ribs prior to the end of the first shift of two spaced 3-hours apart. While there is nothing wrong with barbecue chicken, I for one was very disappointed. Because employees only have one opportunity to get a meal there are those of us who this year will be deprived of the ribs. read more

Came to try out the brisket platter for lunch and was not impressed . It tasted very dry and really not worth trying it again or my $15.99. My sides was sweet potatoe and cole slaw which was ehhhh. I will admit the sweet tea was on point! Lol I asked for spicy bbq sauce and waitress offered to give me regular hot sauce which was another let down as I had to mix both bbq and hot sauce together but not the same. If I should ever go back I will try the bbq ribs, let's see if shorty's bbq can redeem themselves if not, I will keep going to Mission BBQ down the street. read more

I came here for lunch with my friend on a weekday. It was pretty crowded. We were sat quickly and chatted while we looked over the menu. Because we were talking so much, we did not realize how long it took for a server to come over. We sat there about 15 minutes with no one coming over to check on us or even bring us water. Our server came over and said she would be back in a couple of minutes. Really? My friend and I were getting annoyed but did notvwant to go anywhere else due to time constrictions. Finally, our server took our order and the food did come out fairly quickly. My brisket sandwich was served lukewarm. It was alao super dry. The fries were very plain tasting in my opinion. The cole slaw was actually pretty creamy and tasted fine. The whole restaurant overall does not seem like the cleanest place. A couple tables were left unbussed the whole time we were there. I've heard such good things about this restaurant and it was my first time eating here. Needless to say, I was disappointed. It just seems like all the servers are running around and nobody really cares too much about providing good service. Other tables looked unhappy as well. Where do I begin with Shorty's BBQ? When everything is so consistently amazing it's hard to find a place to start. Let's go with the staff- all great at what they do and all with fantastic attitudes and work ethics. It's evident the people that work there enjoy their jobs. They make the experience so much better whether it's a to-go order from the front takeout window or having a meal inside they all deserve a raise! Now the food- someone get me a thesaurus because there's only so many ways to say awesome beyond awesomeness. Everything I've had has been stellar. The portions are mighty healthy for such reasonable prices. The wings are stupid (in the best way) you HAVE to try the okra and the potato skins are fatty-daddys and mozzarella sticks are gooey good. My favorite meal so far is the ginormous pulled pork sandwich w slaw and their delicious smoky Shorty's sauce, yummm with 3 "m"s. You can smell the smokey goodness as soon as they set it down for you. Listen, anything you get here you won't be disappointed with and you definitely won't be hungry. I have more than 12 year coming to this restaurant and I never have had a complaint until today, the server that greeted us, MAYA, was extremely rude. Several times she discussed with me without any sense; I had to ask for the manager which was super helpful and very polite. It's sad that one employee, MAYA, could damage the image of a restaurant and made for me and all our family such a bad initial experience because she was the person who greeted us. Thanks to the manager and our waitress that made us feel better and to the cook because today we ate the best baby back ribs we've ever eaten there. read more

We have been going to Shorty's in Davie for decades. There are other BBQ restaurants in this community that have better food but this is convenient for dining and take-out. The food is generally good (not great) and the staff is friendly and attentive. The ribs are usually delicious and tender and the other entrees, including chicken, burgers and brisket are also decent. The sides are typical of bbq restaurants and pretty standard although the onion rings are a cut above and the coleslaw is particularly good. On this occasion, I ordered the chicken breast plate and while the flavor was good, the chicken breasts were very thin and dry. I ate the fries and had only a few pieces of chicken since it wasn't very good. I didn't mention it to the server, Kim, or I'm sure she would have been happy to exchange the dish. She was pleasant and attentive and and clearly wanted to provide a good dining experience. To sum it up, the food at Shorty's is generally average to good and the service is typically excellent. Okay.... yup... it was just okay... can you eat it... sure, but nothing special about it or the place. I got the Lunch Special for the Pulled Pork on Texas Toast which includes Cole Slaw and French Fries for $7.99. One of my co-workers wanted to come here, mainly for the Key Lime Pie, which is apparently really good. I didn't try it as I'm not a big key lime pie fan. The waiter was good, however the place is a little dark and lack luster. With the number of other barbecue joints close by, I wouldn't see a reason to return. read more

Shorty's has pretty good ribs, corn on the cob, but specially great fried okra. Food wasn't salty but salt shakers are available as well as paper towels and sauces. Server was very nice and patient (6 people) We had baby back ribs for 4 plus fried okra as appetizer but even with 8 people it would be hard to eat all that food. I suggest to add real smoked sausage instead of "franks" and a variety of BBQ sauces so we could try multiple flavors. read more

3/2/2016 - LUNCH REVIEW Absolutely delicious BBQ!!!. Great place to come for lunch with friends, co workers and family...or just by yourself. They are super friendly and homey. The place is pretty big. Lots of Tv's. We came in and they sat us right away. My sister and I were actually shopping this place for a birthday party my sister wants to cater. It came highly recommended! And now I know why. Our waiter, Lee, was so nice and polite. We looked over the lunch menu and ordered the baby back ribs lunch special and the 1/4 chicken special. Both came with 2 sides and a buttery toast. I had the sweet potato. It was so soft and simply delicious. My sister ordered the French fries. Nice thick cut fries, not greasy at all. She also ordered a side of corn on the con which they bring to you in its own bowl sitting on melted butter. The one thing my sister mentioned with the water was that it tasted like "African water" as in a gritty taste (she's been to the bush in Kenya so she knows). It was regular tap water but it did have a funky taste. I ordered Pepsi instead. We asked Lee for catering menus. They have quite a range of items, side dishes and delivery/set up pricing. While paying in the front, we asked the cashier to explain the menu and how it all worked. He politely said he was not versed in catering but he would gladly get a manager to help. Ron, the manager, was patient and knowledgeable about the menu and catering. He suggested a few things we could do as far as mixing some of items to give our guests the best meal possible. We have been regularly coming here for the past 6 years out of convenience, since we moved up from Miami, where the better ones are located. Food wise: This Shorty's is probably the worst of the group. The ribs are unpredictable. Sometimes they are OK, other times they are mediocre, and sometimes they are just horrible. A chain like this should not be this unstable with their product. Service wise: The servers were fine and host was nice, but there is a great lack of common sense from the person running the place (Manager Rob). We had a party of 10 and were seated. After ordering, the two kids in our party wanted ice cream. Unfortunately, Shorty's doesn't sell ice cream. Well, to keep the kids happy, one of the adults took the kids to the BK that was right there and bought them ice cream. When they got back, they were not let into the restaurant because they had two ice creams from somewhere else. They made them throw out the ice cream or eat it outside. This was just ridiculous. I understand if company policy is to not let outside food in, so as not to provide an eating area for someone with food from another establishment. But if you have a large party of 10 and two small kids (4 & 7) want ice cream and you DON't SELL ICE CREAM, a very common and popular item with kids, you let it go. It's not the kids fault you don't sell the item. But apparently, common sense is not something the franchise requires from their managers. Had we not started eating yet, we would have gotten up and left. After today, our regular customer status has expired, at least until better management comes along. read more

Always great food, the best real BBQ, super fresh. The staff is friendly. There are good size portions, fantastic side dishes. This place is very consistent and never disappoints. While in Davie, we stumbled on Shorty's and what a find! I recall coming here many years ago but I left the area and haven't returned. Tonight was the night to try again and I wasn't disappointed. We started with the brunswick stew which was very tasty. I followed with the pulled pork platter with a baked potato... lucky for me, they made a mistake and it came loaded with melted cheese and bacon. This was not supposed to be the case as it usually comes with these on the side for prep as you like. The pork was tender and delicious along with the slaw for a true southern experience. The serving was very generous but little remained. Renee took great care of us and when we told her we were in an unexpected hurry, she kept the meal moving. This is a reasonable priced option good for a dinner out any day of the week! read more

Went last night after many years since our last visit. My wife had cold, tough brisket and I had so-so ribs. The fries were poor. The corn bread was almost unrecognizable as such. I'm updating my old review of Shorty's BBQ because frankly, they're better than the 2 stars I gave them about two years ago. I'd give them 3.5 if I could. Their friendly service is worth 5 stars. I eat lunch at Shorty's at least twice a month, sometimes weekly. The lunch menu is super reasonable. I generally stick to 3 menu options: the 1/4 chicken meal (with potato, garlic bread and coleslaw), the chicken melt sandwich, or the pulled pork sandwich (on garlic bread!). All are solid choices every time. If you have room, order the fantastic corn bread or the carrot cake. Yum! Food comes out quickly and hot, and the service really couldn't be better. One of my favorite things about Shorty's is the outside walk-up, take-out window. You can call ahead for pickup, or just order there and wait about 5 minutes for your food to be ready. They have a few benches in the shade for just that purpose. read more

We went to eat like always best BBQ. But the waitress can't give us a table because the party wasn't complete, we was missing 2 out of 5. The place had 5 tables with costumers. We told the waitress that we wanted start ordering a beers and some appetizers but she insisted that we can't seat if the party is not complete. After 15 min going back and forth she told us that we can get in trouble if we seat 3 and wait for the remaining 2. This place used to be one of my favorites not only for the service but for the delicious food too. but the truth that this situation was not pleasant at all. I was here the other day and let me say, I had nothing to complain about! Upon entering, we were quickly seated and given out menus to start looking at what we wanted. The waitress was super attentive and came over quickly to grab our drink orders. For my meal, I opted for the pulled pork platter and sheesh it was a lot of food! The platter came with a huge chunk of pulled pork, French fries and a piece of garlic bread! The fries were ridiculously hot and just crispy enough to where they're perfectly done in my opinion! The garlic bread had the right crunch to it as well as the perfect mount of butter and seasoning to make it delectable. The pulled pork was just saucy enough and smoked to the perfect flavor of smoke to where it was not overpowering. Prices here are reasonable for a BBQ place, which are usually pricy! Just came here for lunch with my family. They swear by this place as the best BBQ around but I'm not convinced. The inside of the restaurant is pretty cool. Decor wise is a clutter of antique items that all follow the cowboy theme. Vintage signs everywhere and they are hilarious. Restaurant is clean and it has benches for seating. Some of it is family style seating which is cool. Food is ok. Three stars at best because it's just plain. I got the pulled pork sandwich and fries, my husband got the caesar salad with chicken tenders and my parents got the sliced pork sandwich. They enjoyed their meals but like I said, the food is plain. I had to add mayo and BBQ sauce to my food to get some flavor. The pulled pork was at least tender which was a plus but I had to add salt to my fries as well. My husband enjoyed his Caesar salad but it was nothing fancy.
