This review is for cheeseburger combo. The patties seem like Costco brand is 3rd pound angus Patties. They are filling burgers but lack that great Is char broiled taste. Also they close at 3 PM and when I ordered burgers at 2 and pick them up around 2:20 it seemed like I got old old fries, twice fried. Seems like they didn't want to make fresh ones at the end of the day and gave me the old ones. This is not good, the fries were dark brown and could tell that they were sitting for a while. 1st impression was horrible I will not be ordering burgers there again. read more

I've been going to Shorty'z since the day they opened. They are my favorite breakfast spot. There was a time when I lived closer, I would be there every morning. Even though I've moved further, I still make a habit of it to go there at least twice a week. They have the best breakfast burritos. Staff is super friendly, they try to get to know customer's habits so that they can get your order to your liking every time. The owner is awesome, he really cares about customers and the community. Restrooms are clean (for those of you who are wondering) FOOD: My husband and I ordered: -Veggie Omelette -Spinach omelette -French Toast -Chocolate Chip pancakes Although we would not order the chocolate chip pancakes again (because it was a little doughy), we certainly enjoyed everything else. I was talking to a long time yelping friend of mine (Pete F.) about a new yelp disease called "Yelp Rating Inflation". This is when a place has lots and lots of 5 star reviews and it's hard to find out why. Unfortunately Shorty'z falls under this category. So much so that I've gone here 6 times before writing this review to try lots of different things to find out what I'm missing. Now that's dedication! It's also close to where I live and....A-OK. Nothing wrong with A-OK. But A-OK isn't 5 stars. Yelp Rating Inflation or YRI seems to have the following symptoms.... 1. Very nice owners and employees who are friendly. And at Shorty'z they get to know customers names and have a smile on their face. 2. Very clean and new looking. Yes Shorty's isn't 20 years old like some of the other local burger/breakfast spots and their Red White and Blue color scheme isn't your usual 70's Brown/ Yellow/ and Orange. 3. Affordable prices and a large quantity of food for that price. This most definitely goes over well with the local college kids. So here's what I've tried so far. -An omelet with sausage and cheese - the shredded cheese they are using here is pretty cheap stuff and separates when it melts, creating a pretty greasy omelet. 2.5 stars. -The Breakfast burrito had the same problem since it's the same cheese, combined with greasy spoon butter/oil potatoes it didn't hold together very well. Perhaps it needs to be double wrapped. I couldn't detect any hot sauce or salsa added to the burrito, although there was salsa on the side. 2 stars. - Pancakes Shorty'z Stack - These were disgusting and I threw them out after just a few bites. Not sure how you mess up pancakes, but to me it tasted like they soaked up a lot of the greasy spoon butter/oil from the grill, or were even brushed with it. 1 star. -A special of the day Pastrami Egg scramble. Pretty good, they do eggs nicely here in their own fry pan rather than just on the flat top, and I'd get this again if it were on the menu. 4 stars - Breakfast sandwich - this is one of the best things on the menu. It's served on a bagel with a nice slice of American/Cheddar cheese. The eggs are folded in a pan omelet style and are piping hot which melts the cheese. I've tried all 3 - the ham, the sausage, and the bacon. The ham is a big miss and very rubbery, I'd stay away from that. The sausage links were pretty greasy, but doable. Bacon worked best for me, or even a plain egg and cheese might be an option. I would say this is one of the better bagel sandwiches around, although it's not a Bruegger's level bagel by any means, and more like a Sara Lee store bought quality. But hey it gets toasted and topped with eggs and cheese anyway. The bagel's purpose is to hold it all together. 4 stars. - ABC Burger - stands for Avocado, Bacon, and Cheese Burger. The burger is flame broiled, rather than done on the flat top, so it gets a slight char flavor to it. I didn't find the meat too seasoned and perhaps could have used a little more. All the veggies were very fresh, nice avocado, lettuce, and tomato. Definitely could use more sauce next time, which is thousand island. 3.5 stars - Patty Melt - this is a good cheesy patty melt with a slice of American/Cheddar on each side of the patty. The seeded rye bread was nicely grilled and crunchy. I also enjoyed the grilled chopped onion on it. 4 stars - Gryo - since I read that the owners are Greek and people were bragging about the Gyro here, I thought I'd give it a shot. Not impressed at all. The gyro meat isn't roasting and carved off of a leg like you would get at a Greek restaurant. The result was it was pretty mushy like it had been microwaved. The gyro had plenty of Tzatziki sauce, tomatoes, and red onion, but the pita itself was pretty generic. Plenty of places to go for better Gyros whether the owners are Greek or not. 2 stars. - Truman Fries - "If you can't convince them, confuse them" - Harry S. Truman. I guess that applies here, Shorty'z fries are pretty generic average stuff, so the Truman fries tops them with chili, cheese, and pastrami. I'm not sure that chili and pastrami need to go together, although this combination also exists at The Hat. Problem is, this isn't The Hat's pastrami here, it's more like a mild rubbery corned beef. Don't get me wrong it's ok, but 5 stars it is not. 3 stars is more like it. - Zucchini fries however are one of the best things on the menu here. Perfectly cooked, fresh zucchini on the inside, crunchy on the outside with a tasty batter, if you are looking for the one fried side to get this is it. Dip it in a little ranch dressing and you are set. 5 stars. In the past this spot would have gotten a 4 star from me, as I tend to round up from 3.5 stars. But it seems that the only cure to YRI is to start rounding down. read more

This is a great burger joint near CSUF that's not only inexpensive, but the portions are generous for what you get. We came for breakfast after the visiting The Groves Antique Market with the family and weren't disappointed with our meal. It's not over the top fancy, but good old fashioned cafe breakfast! What we got: - Ham and Cheese Omelet: A big omelet full of ham and cheese (obviously), but it also came with a huge brick of hash browns. The outside was perfectly crispy while the inside potatoes were nice and buttery. I used some of the remnant cheese from my egg dish to add additional fatty points. - Chocolate Chip Pancakes: This was the side order that came in an order of two. Not only were they nice and fluffy, there was as a good amount of chocolate chips distributed evenly within. They're pretty sweet, and I didn't even add syrup as I thought it would be overkill. It's a pretty awesome deal for less than $3. Jaime had the gyro and exclaimed it was one of the best he's had. I don't doubt it as I think the owners are Greek. But it had a lot of meat and he thought the sauce complimented it well. I didn't try it, but I did eat a majority of his zucchini fries that accompanied it. They were perfectly crispy and the ranch just added to the deliciousness - I'd get a separate order of this on my own next time. On a Sunday morning, the place was packed, but they have seating inside as well as the patio - you just might need to wait a few minutes until someone else is done so you can swoop in and steal table. Ohhh new spot to scope out! This place supposedly opened in Sept even though it looks old school~!!!! Due to the geographical lcoation, I anticipate avoiding this place on certain CSUF days... Service: Top notch. Very good. The older gentleman, whom I presume to be the owner, was very gentle and nice. He is not a local and speaks with an accent, possibly Russian or Eastern European, but his rugged look was greeted with a simple hello, smiles, and left by saying thank you, have a nice day and all that good stuff we do not get from 90% of the fooderies in the area. Food: Very basic and has a home cook feel to it. There was nothing fancy or special about the veggie omlette I ordered. Anticipating to try more breakfast items soon. ADDED not too long after initial review: Breakfast Burros. Bleeh. It is small and nothing special... Especially with the other great bfast burro places around. Bagel Breakfast Sammich: My sammich did not come with egg whites but it is ok. The bagel sammich is super basic and can be made at home. I checked this place out with my family after reading so many rave reviews about it ,and we're all glad we did! This quaint, hidden gem is located adjacent to a Mexican restaurant off Placentia Ave. It's the type of restaurant where you order first and someone serves you food after you're given a number. There is plenty of seating for small groups of 4, a combination of booths and tables, as well as some tables outside. I had the pleasure of running into Ryan C. in line too! Small world! What we ordered: -Chocolate Chip pancakes combo: Delicious! The reviews were right. These babies were nice and fluffy. I wish it had more chocolate chips, but it's probably a good thing it didn't. It also came with 2 eggs any style, 2 bacon/2 sausage, though I asked for 4 sausage instead, and a little ramakin of pancake syrup ($5.95. It's an extra 85 cents if you want egg whites). -Pastrami Sandwich: This came with a free drink, and for an extra $2.65, a side of your choice: fries, onion rings, zucchini fries). The fries were like the one's at Angelo's in Anaheim, crispy and big. I didn't get a bite of my dad's sandwich since he devoured it all, but he LOVED it! ($7 and some change) -Chorizo scamble: This came with hashed browns and your choice of toast (white, wheat, rye sourdough). The hashed browns were very buttery and good, and the scramble itself was yum, especially if you like chorizo ($6.75) My bro also got the same thing as me, chocolate chip pancakes. We all thoroughly enjoyed or meals and have already decided t come back here over and over and over again. Our new spot! The portions are perfect, enough to satiate any hunger you may have, and the prices are even better! This place is the traditional ma and pa diner. The walls are cracked, painting scrapped off in some areas and the overall appearance is not the traditional ihop look with fancy lighting and nice Booths, yet the service and food where excellent. I ordered an Omelette and all the ingredients in it were just the right portion... not too much cheese or onions all the way around my food and toast tasted fresh. Not to mention the coffee, it was freshly brewed and I love that they have flavored creamer. I also tried the FT and by far the best Ive tried; it was soft and moist with the butter and syrup it melted in my mouth. Also, the service was exceptional! Since we walked up an ordered the cashier was very friendly and as I mentioned it was my first visit she was kind enough to explain the menu. Located at the former Golden Ox. I drive by this place almost everyday. Noticed trial opening on 9-30, and grand opening on 10-1-14. A Mom and Pop store, so I have to try it asap. It was my day off, so took my nephew with me for lunch. We ordered breakfast meaty burrito and chili burger combo. My burrito was perfect, with sausage, bacon, ham, and hash brown all wrapped in it. So big that I only finished three quarter of it. Highly recommended with no reservation. My nephew's chili burger combo was good, could have used a little more chili, but he told me it was tasty. I noticed the veggies in the burgers were very fresh, a definite plus. The young owner walked around and asked all the customers how things were, another definitely plus, showed that he cares!! Keep it up I'd say. When he came to us, we had a long conversation. Well, in fact, a rather harsh but I think constructive comment. So I'm sure the chili burger will also be improved. I kinda watched other tables' food, mostly burgers, they looked good, people seemed to enjoy their food. I also would give the owner credits for hiring lots of help!! I mean I'm used to $10+ dishes in SF for brunch and never blinked, but this place, a pancake combo with 2 pancakes, eggs, bacon, and sausage was about $6. How is that even possible? Apparently it is. I had a bad experience this 3rd time I tried out Shortyz. I'm hoping my next visit they change my opinion. Though we did complain and the manager Chris assured us he would replace our order next time we come. Which was greatly appreciated. I felt I still needed to write this review after I attempted to eat the omlete only to find they hadn't cooked it all the way. I took a bite of partially raw eggs, disgusting. It was a simple order of the Denver omlete with no bell peppers & grilled onions, side of sausage & bacon extra crispy. Not only did I find bell peppers in my omlete, the onions were under cooked & not grilled, also in the middle it was not cooked. Hash browns were included with the omlete, they were also under cooked with a couple cooked brown spots. The sides of meat were not cooked crispy let alone extra crispy. Had to re-cook they to make them crispy at home. Completely defeating the purpose of buying prepared food. When I called to complain the young lady that answered was overly assertive & cut me off multiple times. Though she meant well and was nice, she needs customer service training. She actually talked over me until I gave up, to tell me my complaint was not valid about the meat. All because she claims she saw the meat come out and it was definitely crispy. Maybe she saw a different order or needs her eyes checked. She also told me that the steam and condensation from the meat in the take out container was what made the meat seemed under cooked. I explained that the fat on the bacon before re-cooking was wiggly and cleary not cooked to crispiness. Steam cannot uncook bacon. My roommate and I just tried this new diner, and we love it! The staff is super friendly, and constantly asks if you need anything else with your meal, or if there is anything else they can do for you, which is good it makes you feel like they care about you. There is a nice variety of different selection of foods from breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, and gyros. One of my favorite things about Shortyz is the price and portions. The menu items are very affordable and they give you a nice size portion for what you pay for. I tried the chocolate chip pancake combo breakfast with eggs, bacon, and sausage and fell in love. My roommate ordered something that was not on the menu but they were happy to make it for him! Which is nice they are willing to go out of their way to serve their customers needs. He ordered a grilled chicken melt sandwich if anyone was wondering lol. All in all this is a really good family owned restaurant with a friendly staff and affordable prices with good portions and good quality taste. It's not the best, and its not the worst, but it is fore sure good for those that are need that staple favorite for breakfast. It comes iwth three eggs and very affordable. most places have that price for two eggs and hash. This place has both. **Patty Melt - I am the type to try the popular thing that is different from other places. The patty melt here is so homey and awesome. I started to fall in love with it. I have never had a patty melt before, but from the pictures, I knew I was going to like it. A beef Patty in rye bread smothered with american cheese and onions. It is so American and awesome. I love it. ***Truman Fries - Now for the Creme de la Creme. This is awesomely so good. Of course you can get something similar in other places, but this one is just as good. This is a small hole in the wall grill tucked in the corner of a shopping center. Walking in, you immediately get the feel that it's legitimate flat top grill diner. You order the food at the front, choose your table, and the food is brought over. They have a pretty extensive menu, half of which is made up of breakfast items. I went with a scrambled egg combo (around noon), some hash browns, and a side of french toast. I asked for the hash browns to be extra crispy and I have to say, this is the first restaurant ever that listened to that request and actually cooked them crispy. The bacon was also nice and crispy and the french toast was moist and the bread was soft. I can't judge eggs because a 4 year old can make eggs right, but overall it was worth taking what I couldn't finish to go in a box. For about $22 for two people and a lot of food, it's definitely worth a trip back. read more

This restaurant is a diamond in the rough. I had never been here before and was a little apprehensive when we came because it's attached to a boarded up building that looks kinda shady and the restaurant itself doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside it was really clean and the staff was very friendly. They serve mostly breakfast and lunch items, but the menu offers a good variety of things to choose from. My group ordered all different things and no one was disappointed. I got the three meat breakfast burrito with bacon, ham, chorizo, egg, and potatoes. I think if I go back I'll just get the chorizo because it was so good. The drinks are self serve, but one of the employees goes around while you're eating and offers to give you refills or to see if you need anything which is convenient and I was not expecting. The restaurant is very comfortable and somewhere where you can sit for a while and chat. Nicer than a greasy spoon but not a full blown diner. #85/100 read more

We walked into the restaurant and unlike other restaurants you order your food first then get a table when one is available. I actually liked this concept - we only waited about 7 minutes until an outside table became available. I ordered the sausage breakfast sandwich and my wife ordered the bacon breakfast sandwich - then we ordered the chocolate pancake combo to share with our daughter. (I have a huge appetite) The breakfast sandwiches were a lot bigger than I thought and were great! The chocolate pancakes were amazing! I will definitely order these next time and skip on the sandwich (which was still good) On top of all the great food - the service was amazing! We felt so bad that we prepaid and didn't have cash so we didn't end up leaving a tip but when we come again - which we will - we will leave a bigger tip! Check this place out! read more

My boyfriend introduced me to this place, and at first I was not too sure about it but now I'm a regular and can't get enough. Corned Beef Hash is really great, and my go to for this place. The steak and eggs portion is quite large, especially for the price you pay. It's a deal! The quality of the steak and eggs are very good as well, not half-ass regardless of the cheap price. I've also had the chocolate chip pancake combo, it was quite delicious. However, the pancake is a savory pancake, so if you like sweet pancakes you will not enjoy it. I liked them! They give you a lot of zucchini fries if you order it as a side, and they make it fresh. It's quite good! The cashiers are nice, and very personable. Staff is super friendly !!! They welcomed us in and brought us almost everything we needed. I recommend the zucchini fries , they're so good. As for the breakfast food it was mediocre. I would come back and get their fries Togo and they even gave us an extra ranch for free. read more

Come here hungry. It's a lot of food. It's one of those fast food diner places. I had the cheese burger. The patty was juicy, it was a pretty standard burger. No thrills. It was good. That....was a DAMN fine breakfast. This is going to become a regular place for us, I can tell already. GREAT prices, great menu options, great experience overall. Extra kudos for an incredibly well done corned beef hash and eggs. Pancakes are perfect as well. Coffee is self serve (woot!) and it's better than most diners around. Staff is always very friendly and helpful. Small outdoor seating area if you want some fresh air. You can always tell a place is going to be good if it closes after lunchtime, and there's groups of seniors who clearly meet there regularly, and this place was no exception.
