They only serve vegetarian food It's cheap and good. My 1st time here and will come back in the future when I'm craving for Indian food

I am in love with this place. The food is all very good, flavorful, and an experience. The portion size is like the boyfriend who goes beyond your expectation, showing you're capable of being love more than you ever thought. The price is shockingly affordable and unreal. Makes me want to come here more often to try out the different foods. Mixed pakora appetizer - it has paneer, mixed veggies, and pepper (seperate, not together), i liked the veggie pakora Dosa - idk which one i got, but it had potatoes in it, came side of sauce and they were all so good, the softness from the potatoes that warms the dosa, and the change in texture from the crispy outer dosa Samosa Chaat (friend got it) - beautiful blend of sweet and savory from the chutney and the curry with the soft chickpea and added crunch from the cut up samosa and the crispy topping Saag Paneer - the first time i had this dish was the HEB version, which is sad, flavorful, and wet(?) in comparison to the one I had at Shri Balaji Bhavan - the one here is rich in flavor, paneer is nice and soft (not rubbery like the one from the HEB frozen meal), spinach mix is perfectly mixed to a delicious texture I bought the dosa, cup of chai, and mixed pakora appetizer, which all came out to about $12. Service is good. Water and utensils are self serve. The place is more of place to have dinner alone, with family, or with friends.

I had one day to spend eating in Houston so I had to pick wisely where to eat. I found this place serving filter coffee which I have had in India and the pani puri is recommended. Went ahead and ordered those and a dosa. The pani puri was the worst! No flavor just a straight shot of spice! The filter coffee tasted just like an American coffee with milk added to it. The dosa was ok. I was disappointed mainly that I don't have time to go hunt for a better place The service was not bad, you order at the counter, pick a table and they will bring you your food. The ambiance feels like you are actually in an Indian restaurant with all the aromas but nothing really stand out to make it an authentic experience.

A good stop for Indian food. Less spicy except for corn bhel or if u request, big fan of the dosas here. Service is fast and staff is friendly. Its Navratri so we had special dietary requirements like no onion garlic and they had plenty options to cater to our restrictions.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Houston, I've been coming here since I was a kid. Their mysorre masala dosa is fire. when I was a kid, I would finish one by myself, it's still one of my favorite go-to as an adult. Their sambar is delicious! I also enjoy their samosa chaat and pao bhaji. Recently, I tried their pao bhaji dosa, and I think that's my new favorite and I can't wait to go back and order it again!! So good I highly recommend Shri Balaji Bhavan. It's a Houston, staple for delicious, affordable, and reliable South Indian food. This place is vegetarian so there are lots of flavorful options if you are vegan or vegetarian !

It's one of those places that I've been going to forever but never think about to review it because it's so basic.... nothing fancy, just good solid food. You order at the counter. They give you a number and then you sit down and wait for your food that you have to go pick up yourself. I have no clue why they give you the number but that's just what they do. The interior is dated, but clean and the food is flavorful and inexpensive. So what more can you ask for when you're in the mood for a quick bite. Honestly, it reminds me that I need to go more often

We had stopped coming to this place cuz of their long lines and never working restrooms. The food never disappointed us but the ambience wasn't great to bring friends and family to. My in-laws were in town and wanted to try South Indian food and so we brought them here. We ordered their Mysore Masala Dosa, Masala Dosa, Idli, Masala Uttapam, and filtered coffee. Everything was excellent except the uttapam wasn't fully cooked inside and they were happy to remake it or replace it with another meal. We had them remake it and it came out great. It's a great choice is you're looking for good South Indian dish and don't much care for the ambiance.

See our empty plates and after a lot of pleadings it FINALLY showed up, the restaurant was semi full so no excuses.....

Some thing has changed about this place in the last 5 years. I used to like it previously but I definitely love it now. The food is so authentic and so light on your stomach. Reminds me of homemade. The ppl are nice, the restaurant is decent, some of f favorite things to try here are tamarind rice, upma and of course, the dosa. Highly recommend it, if you're missing Telangana / South Indian food

    Meryam A.

The restaurant is located in a shopping complex and doesn't have a lot of parking out front. There is additional parking in the back though so don't worry. You have to order at the front, we got the paani puri, samosa chaat and masala dosa. They call you to grab your feed and water is self serve, which isn't bad but it would be nice to have the service. Everything tasted good but it was nothing special and it was definitely on the spicy side.

I have to knock this up to a 5 star because man. Everything was just delicious. There no place like it that I have found. Their dosas are just perfect.

We returned in 3 days for another round of dosa and gobi Manchurian. The gobi this time is not crispy at all...possibly has been sitting for too long but the sauce is better than the first time when we went here. If only they can combine the crispy gobi from 1st visit with the sauce from today, that will be perfect. We both got the paper masala dosa as our entree since we had tried one other dosa and decided both of us like the masala dosa so much that we want our own. Everything was great! The sambar and chutney were not as salty as the ones on Wednesday. Possibly cos round 2 we came at noon whilst our first visit was at 7PM, closer to closing. So we got the bottom of the pot sambar and chutney, hence it was a lot saltier during our first visit. Dosa is good, price is right and the portion is awesome after a long run in the morning. Definitely a great place to refuel.

Unfortunately, our experience was quite the opposite. The first thing we noticed when we entered the restaurant was a strong, unpleasant smell. Since we had specifically gone there to try the food, we still decided to dine in. We ordered chai, Mysore masala dosa, chole bhature, and samosas. None of the dishes really stood out. The food was just average; not terrible, but definitely not worth making the drive for. The chai in particular had almost no flavor, and we couldn't even finish it. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, especially given the hype. There are many better options in the Katy/Richmond area where you can find great food in a much more pleasant dining environment. The smell inside the restaurant was also concerning, as it raises questions about hygiene and food safety standards. For context, we visited on a Saturday morning around 11:30 AM, so it wasn't late in the day or close to closing time. Based on this experience, I wouldn't prefer to visit again.

Be careful as the chicken 65 (mini fried chicken bites) have spiciness to it with a good amount of chili powder and pepper kicked in. The goat curry was alright, don't know if I would order it again as the grease was overwhelming. I wasn't a fan of the palak paneer, found it too runny and it was leaking when it was delivered to us. Their longevity (#1) of a near half century is nothing short of impressive, earning a nostalgic place in the hearts of many Houston diners, a good number of whom trace their first Indian cuisine experiences at this very location. While I do wish their success, it's hard not to point out minor mishaps in different aspects of the overall restaurant experience, which include: :: Awkward stares from the staff as they hover or stand in the middle of the room. It's understandable that they're monitoring to help where needed, but even then I will have to flag them down for water, napkins, or the bill. :: Buffet maintenance. They're semi-quick to replenish, but extremely slow at maintaining the cleanliness. Splatter from the daal makhani, a serving spoon not returned to the same serving tray, or even customers forgetting to close the bins at the dessert station (#2) could all be mitigated by a designated person keeping it tidy. :: Food quality. The tandoori chicken has been dry, the saag paneer could be creamier, and chicken tikka masala has had their bland days. Even the naan can be a bit too dry at times. Thankfully I've fared better with the chana masala and paneer makhani. I would also steer clear of their fruit punch. :: Decor is dark and dated. It still reminds me of a place that is stuck in time, which for most experiences are usually my favorite. The natural lighting during lunch alleviates this slightly, but the dinner hour makes this place feel like eating in an older hotel lobby. The vibes are most definitely challenging. :: Foodflation. Another price hike in the last year brings the buffet price to just under $22. While it's a nice jump from what it was previously, it does leave me wishing for more, especially when the prices keep climbing. ___________ (#1) 46 years. Cons -We went during lunchtime and although we didn't have to wait for a table, it was crowded at the buffet area when getting food, and at times people take a longer time getting food. -The non-veg was a bit disappointing as the taste was a bit bland, especially the curry types which should be bursting with flavors. -They offered a special fish dish but it has bones which I don't prefer. -They did not have my favorite puri when we were there! The inside isn't giant -- on the smaller side, with a lot of tables packed in, plus a couple of larger ones for bigger parties. Pro Tip: The spice level is was Medium/low, so if you are expecting some very spicy dishes you need to ask for them. Frontier Beef Karhai, $19.50 -- 3.5/5. Himalayan fried chicken, $24.99 -- 4.5/5. Nice crispy batter, prepared a little differently than you're used to. It's skinless, bone-on chicken that's been filleted off the bone a bit, so instead of a plain drumstick, it's more like a filleted drumstick, with the breast filleted off, with a little bone left on to hold it together. The chicken was super tender and moist and the batter was crunchy. There's a bit of an Indian flavor profile, but not overwhelming -- I was actually hoping for a little more spice, kick, and heat. Still, very good chicken, and I'd try it again. Rice, 3.5/5. Solid side, but nothing spectacular. I've had much better. Garlic naan, $9 -- 3.5/5. Solid, big piece of naan. Would get it again. Service was quick. The food took a little while to come out, mostly because of the fried chicken -- though we ordered that right when we sat down, then ordered the rest about ten minutes later as we looked over the menu. If you've lived in Houston all your life, I highly suggest giving this place a try. It's one of those Houston staples that's been around, and some of the things they do are really good and a little different. That said, from a value perspective I think a place like Aga's outshines them just slightly. I've had many of the same curries at Aga's and find them a touch better, and a slightly better value. In the end, it's a totally fine place for takeout or to sit down and eat give it a try. Would recommend, and would return.

These are some of the best drinks I've ever had at any type of Indo-Pak restaurants in Houston. The mint lemonade was definitely in a league of its own. We didn't go for any appetizers, just went straight in to the entrées. The Chicken Hara Masala Supreme. Just wow, chef's kiss. Think cut up chicken thighs in a green curry that almost has a salsa like mouth feel with vegetables. Absolutely decadent. The Steak Tikka. Round of applause. I overheard the owner telling other tables that it's the best steak in Houston. I'll say it's the best steak I've ever had at an Indo-Pak restaurant. The steak was super tender it had that famous Tikka style smokiness. The Butter Chicken. Pretty damn solid. The gravy was silky and perfectly textured. They also use chicken thighs for this, which makes it even better. The Saag Paneer. It was all right, I've had better at other places, but still super solid. The Paneer was fresh and was great on all the various naans we got. For the naan, we just got the garlic and the butter naan. They are absolutely great when they come straight out of the tandoor oven, but I found that they get a little too hard if not eaten quickly. I'm sure they would reheat really well. We also tried the spicy rocket naan and it decent. I would just stick with garlic and butter. The only miss for me was the Mutton Biryani. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid biryani dish, but I've had better that had a little bit more flavor. The mutton was very tender, but the opportunity was making the rice a little bit less clunky. I see a lot of reviews with people hating on things like service or area. Let me just say we had no issues with service. The service was top-notch. We spent $222 with tip across three people. A little pricey but totally worth it.
