4 stars. Stopped in for an early weekday dinner. The place wasn't overly busy with dine-in, but the to-go orders were running nonstop. The inside isn't giant -- on the smaller side, with a lot of tables packed in, plus a couple of larger ones for bigger parties. Pro Tip: The spice level is was Medium/low, so if you are expecting some very spicy dishes you need to ask for them. Frontier Beef Karhai, $19.50 -- 3.5/5. Himalayan fried chicken, $24.99 -- 4.5/5. Nice crispy batter, prepared a little differently than you're used to. It's skinless, bone-on chicken that's been filleted off the bone a bit, so instead of a plain drumstick, it's more like a filleted drumstick, with the breast filleted off, with a little bone left on to hold it together. The chicken was super tender and moist and the batter was crunchy. There's a bit of an Indian flavor profile, but not overwhelming -- I was actually hoping for a little more spice, kick, and heat. Still, very good chicken, and I'd try it again. Rice, 3.5/5. Solid side, but nothing spectacular. I've had much better. Garlic naan, $9 -- 3.5/5. Solid, big piece of naan. Would get it again. Service was quick. The food took a little while to come out, mostly because of the fried chicken -- though we ordered that right when we sat down, then ordered the rest about ten minutes later as we looked over the menu. If you've lived in Houston all your life, I highly suggest giving this place a try. It's one of those Houston staples that's been around, and some of the things they do are really good and a little different. That said, from a value perspective I think a place like Aga's outshines them just slightly. I've had many of the same curries at Aga's and find them a touch better, and a slightly better value. Having lived in Houston since prior to 2004, I honestly can't believe my first time to the Himalaya Restaurant was just recently. Start with their mint lemonade or iced chai tea. These are some of the best drinks I've ever had at any type of Indo-Pak restaurants in Houston. The mint lemonade was definitely in a league of its own. We didn't go for any appetizers, just went straight in to the entrées. The Chicken Hara Masala Supreme. Just wow, chef's kiss. Think cut up chicken thighs in a green curry that almost has a salsa like mouth feel with vegetables. Absolutely decadent. The Steak Tikka. Round of applause. I overheard the owner telling other tables that it's the best steak in Houston. I'll say it's the best steak I've ever had at an Indo-Pak restaurant. The steak was super tender it had that famous Tikka style smokiness. The Butter Chicken. Pretty damn solid. The gravy was silky and perfectly textured. They also use chicken thighs for this, which makes it even better. The Saag Paneer. It was all right, I've had better at other places, but still super solid. The Paneer was fresh and was great on all the various naans we got. For the naan, we just got the garlic and the butter naan. They are absolutely great when they come straight out of the tandoor oven, but I found that they get a little too hard if not eaten quickly. I'm sure they would reheat really well. We also tried the spicy rocket naan and it decent. I would just stick with garlic and butter. The only miss for me was the Mutton Biryani. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid biryani dish, but I've had better that had a little bit more flavor. The mutton was very tender, but the opportunity was making the rice a little bit less clunky. I see a lot of reviews with people hating on things like service or area. Let me just say we had no issues with service. The service was top-notch. We spent $222 with tip across three people. Dinner in the Mahatma Gandhi District in Houston, Texas is worth a visit if Indian food is your thing. Had the most delicious and authentic experience at Himalaya restaurant. I'd tried their lamb vindaloo, basmati rice, and masala tea. This was my first time eating the combo of Indian and Pakistani food. The food was such so delicious and I felt as though it was cooked and served with passion and love. The curry was indeed flavorful, not too spicy, juicy and tender lamb meat with crunchy small diced potatoes. I ordered one of my favorite go-to entrees here and my favorite Indian sweet treats afterwards last night. I had the Chicken Hara Masala with a large basmati rice for the entree. Very delicious, exotic, rich and colorful. It was nicely thick with a really good gravy consistency that was both generously oily and creamy seemingly at the same time. The chicken chunks were not only abundant, but also well-marinated, soft and juicy. The curry had a flavor profile of spicy, salty, citrusy, earthy and savory all in one phenomenal blend. Such balance without any overdoing the other and made with pure love. Afterwards, the post meal consisted of Gulab Jamun and a cold cup of Mango Lassi driving home. Both so delicious, fresh, sweet and moist in feel. The jamun was like a wet, cardamom, rose flavored donut dessert with a sweet syrup both awesome to consume cold or warm. The cold, sweet mango lassi was tropical, milky and of course being a mango lover already, addictive in even the tiniest sips. The service was very welcoming, friendly and efficient. I have had numerous curries, meats and biryani for the main dishes and numerous desserts over time coming here. They can all be so different from one another, but all really delicious, spiced, herbed and fresh every time. I've been wanting to try this place for a long time and finally made it in. I was not disappointed. The service was really good. Unlike some other reviews I saw, the owner came over, introduced himself, asked what we liked, checked for food allergies, and gave helpful recommendations. He really went above and beyond for us. We ordered a variety of dishes so I got to try a little bit of everything, and everyone enjoyed their food. I'm a big fan of biryani and hadn't found any good biryani here since I moved, but this one was made just right. The garlic naan was exceptional. The shrimp was good, and the fried chicken was delicious and seasoned very well. The sauce on the side paired perfectly. I also had the steak and it was super tender. I like spicy food. This wasn't overly spicy for me, but it might be a bit much for someone who doesn't enjoy heat. The mint lemonade was also really good. One helpful tip: your bill is slightly cheaper if you pay cash instead of card. Overall, this is the best Indian food I've had so far. I've tried Agas and wasn't a big fan. We got the chicken biryani to-go, and we've done this for years now. If anything, I think it tastes better over time. We went in and ordered the biryani to-go and it came within 5 minutes, so service was really fast. The ambiance is like any other Indian restaurant inside. It's a little tight in terms of seating, but I think a lot of people order to-go. The actual chicken in the biryani was so soft and easily cut apart. It was almost like the tenderness of a tandoori chicken, and the rice wasn't super oily either. They also gave a side box of cut onions, cabbage, and a green mint chutney that was a little limey. I went with my family to celebrate my husband's birthday at Himalaya restaurant. Honestly? I wanted to give the restaurant 4/5 due to the service being a bit poor: they're a bit understaffed compared to the sheer number of patrons that visit. But the food quality is so good I have to give it 5/5. We got the steak kebabs which were cooked perfectly: juicy, a bit pink in the middle and for 39.99 pretty decently portioned. We also got the mutton biryani which honestly blows Aga's out of the water. It's super spicy, filled to the brim with meat, and the rice is so fluffy and nice. Another big recommendation I have to give is the chicken hara masala, which may be my favorite dish in Houston now. Another big plus was that the owner came around often, spoke with us, and even sang happy birthday and gave a bunch of gulab jamun to my husband. All in all, a great experience. The goat curry was good. But the bbq platter was better. However, from the bbq platter. The really good meat was really the steak, which is sold separately and called Sandy's steak tikka bourdain. Succulent meat, great flavor, perfectly cooked. On the bbq platter some of the pieces of meat were dry, some were juicy, one was too spicy for me, I liked the fresh bell pepper that it came with and the green cilantro/parsley sauce. Himalaya is a small, causal spot that you could consider "hole in the wall" except that it receives well-established restaurant levels of business. The food is amazing, but the service is a little pushy in terms of trying to get you to add things on after your order is placed, even after you refuse multiple times. (We were asked if we wanted to add naan or a mango lassi probably 5 or 6 times and that "everyone does it, you want it trust me" which was a little off putting). But the food makes up for what they lack in atmosphere or service. The special butter chicken is so flavorful, creamy, and intense - one of the best I've tried. The spinach paneer was also one of the best I've had and I wished I could've taken one to go. And the chicken biryani was humongous and with good portions and a large amount of chicken. Ultimately the food was very satisfying and between two people we couldn't even finish these three things! I'd definitely come back for the food, I'd just have lower expectations going in about service. It did leave an impression on me that makes me hesitate to give it a full 5 stars. WORST INDIAN FOOD AND SERVICE EVER! A 1 star is generous considering this was some of the worst Indian food I've had. The owners gave polite at first but it turned into passive aggression when they noticed we weren't enjoying our food at all. I ordered an Arnold Palmer and it tasted like toilet water mixed with strong lemon juice, when I asked to simply take it back he brings 2 more glasses and a glass of unsweetened tea and begins to pour the drink into two cups and said "there I fixed it" when he noticed we still weren't drinking the now even more bitter drink he said "you don't like it. Well that's how we make it." The service was bad as well I asked for a cup of ice and he seemed to have had to ask the owner whom said no, so we never received it nor a refill on our water until when we were already going to leave. Super expensive for poor quality food and service , we didn't want to take our leftovers but they insisted by packing it up for us. Service 0, food terrible and owners prideful , passive aggressive. Also on top of your already expensive bill , ($6 a drink) they apply an automatic %12 gratuity to every bill. Even though we were only 2 people. Save your time , your money, and your stomach. The garlic naan was delicious (crispy, fluffy and delicate). The minced garlic and butter on top was very fragrant. The butter chicken is different from what I remember, but it's full of spices and tender chunks. The portion is a small/medium bowl and doesn't come with rice. A small bowl of rice is the same size, while a regular comes on a plate. The rice is always well cooked. The saag paneer was a chunky creamy spinach dish with cubes of paneer. The seasoning and oils' flavors were pretty apparent. I really wanted to try the fried chicken as it sounded interesting. It takes 20-25 minutes from ordering. Chicken Hará Masala - 4/5 Chicken Tikka Masala - I am a fan of anything chicken tikka masala, if the flavor isn't there then the food is not good. It's a simple dish that if it's not good, for me can make or break if I revisit. Luckily, it was delicious, and this dish also had competition with the steak tikka. I wanted 2nd's and 3rds of it. The place is intimate in a cozy space in a plaza off southwest freeway, parking is within the plaza and seems safe enough, but still don't leave your valuables. The service was quick and efficient, the manager/owner came and checked on us a couple of times and overall made the visit all the more enjoyable, because I was feasting with family. This is a review for a charity dinner I purchased at an auction held by the Periwinkle Foundation at their Iron Sommelier Event in 2024. We finally got around to putting the event together in October of this year. Bottom line that Chef Kaiser and his team put together one of the most awesome meals that our 8 guests could ever have imagined, especially since we all love this kind of cuisine. And our host from Periwinkle - Jim Veal brought some kick butt wines and made for an exceptional host. If you don't know the Periwinkle Foundation - you should look them up as they area wonderful organization. In a nutshell, they provide camping experiences and other events for kids at Texas Children that are impacted by cancer and other devastating illnesses. These folks are saints. Ok, enough of the public service announcement, lets talk about the meal. As I said, the food was flowing from the minute we sat down. As you may know, Himalaya is located in an unassuming strip center in what might be referred to as Houston's "India Town" area. Chef Kaiser Lashkiri has been nominated for James Beard Awards and featured on Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown TV Show and also on Andrew Zimmern's show The Zimmern List. And he was an awesome host and kept our guests pleased with both his hospitality and his wit. We started with his famous Pakistani Fried Chicken. The chicken has the skin removed and is marinated in a bunch of spices, then breaded and fried. One guest raved that it was the best fried chicken ever and it was very good fried chicken. What followed next were described as Pakidillas (Pakistani version of Mexican Quesadillas) with braised beef inside an Indian flatbread. Very good, but pretty filling. Then we were served a mound of Beef Biryani. Woah was it good, and we still had a bunch to take home at the end of the night. We were then served three different curries - a butter chicken, a chicken tikka masala, and a green curry chicken. Each with distinct and vibrant tastes. A large plate of his Hunters Beef came out next along with another braised beef kind of dish. And I almost forgot - We had two large platters of different grilled meats from lamb, to beef, to chicken with different seasonings. Everything was on point. My favorite bite of the night was probably the green curry chicken, but everything was fantastic, as were our hosts both Jim and Kaiser equally. Everyone left with full belly's and smiling faces. Just come eat here already- everyone knows the hole in the wall restaurants are the best! Even better when you see Anthony Bourdain and Zimmerman on the wall! The staff is not rude and neither are the owners... Walk in with a great attitude and you shouldn't have any issues. I came on a random weekday at 11 AM right when it opened and within 10 to 15 minutes, it was packed to the core and the staff was so great about getting all the orders and the dishes out in a timely manner. They were good. Definitely get the Fried Chicken! It was served with a garlicky butter and spice dipping sauce that was very addicting. Their Chicken Tikka Masala was unique; it tasted different than what we've had before - lots of cardamom spice. My wife said it was her favorite. Service was friendly; the owner checked in on us. Came after seeing a few Tiktoks of the owner advertising the food and was very pleasantly surprised by the dishes. We ordered the garlic naan, the steak tikka, and the goat masala with a side of rice. The garlic naan was not only delicious but also smelled great -filling my nose with the essence of garlic right when it hit the table. The tops of the naan were doused in a generous amount of garlic butter and parsley and came out warm and whole as though they were right out of the tandoor. (8/10) The steak tikka was the star of our meal. Though I'm not a big steak person, when I heard this was an Anthony Bourdain approved steak I knew I had to give it a try. The steak was not only super juicy and tender, but the Indian spices and flavors really elevated this dish and made it one of the best steaks I've ever had. This along with the herby green yogurt sauce it comes with is a must try when coming here. Though the dish is one of the pricier dishes in is worth every penny and comes in a generous portion. (8.5/10) The goat masala was also very tasty and the meat was tender. Dipping the garlic naan in the curry was definitely another highlight of this meal. This dish was a solid goat curry, however, I have had better as I felt like the flavor of it was less complex than other goat curries I've had. Highly recommend their curries and garlic butter naan! It was brought out in a timely manner for a building that looks like a family own business. The platter consisted of lamb, chicken, and beef. Oh and let me not forget the delicious garlic naan bread. Atmosphere is quaint and feels like a place only locals would know about. The service was very helpful! The highlight for me were the tikka steak, butter chicken, garlic naan and the mint lemonade! Lol! Price for two ordering multiple dinner options ran to about $80. I did see lunch specials that end at 2:30. We arrived just after lunch but ordering dinner portions left us with plenty of leftovers. Place is BYOB, brought our own alcohol and they'll provide cups if you ask for it Dress code: casual Food 5/5: food was delicious, we ordered the gola kebab, butter chicken, goat karhai, mutton biryani, steak, fried chicken, okra and mango lassi. Wasn't a big fan of the okra but everything else was amazing. The kabab is on the spicy side (fairly average for Indian/Asian cooking), so beware. Service 4/5: slow at time, but friendly and helpful, providing recommendations on how much food dishes. Ambiance 3/5: fairly average ambiance, plastic cups, nothing that wowed but was fairly clean. No trip to Houston can be considered complete unless you visit the iconic Himalaya Restaurant!! This is the smallish family run restaurant that is well known amongst all of the Houston foodies! The restaurant is small and very cozy and you are made to feel at home as soon as you enter. The flavors of each, and every dish are unique and spot on. A group of us friends got together for dinner on New Year's night and all I can say is what a way to start the year! We let Chef Lashkari set the menu for us which consisted of Chicken Chargah, his very famous Fried Chicken, Mutton Biryani, Green Chicken, an amazing Masala Beef, Beef Khima, Garlic and Plain naans and an array of desserts that were outstanding! Himalaya is an Indo-Pakistani staple of Houston. They have several awards and recognitions and have also been visited by Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern. The mutton biryani is a great option. The meat is very tender and the dish as a whole is very tasty and well spiced. I tried the achaari chicken and hunters beef for the first time. The chicken was very soft and juicy. The pickle taste was not too strong. I've never had hunters beef before, it was an interesting option of shredded beef that was served with a mustard sauce. I would try something else in the future. The garlic naan and mango lassi are both great as well. The restaurant is not very big so expect a wait for a larger group. It's worth it. The owner is very kind and always involved. I look forward to my next meal there! I read some other reviews and noticed that the service might be inconsistent and some had rude experiences. I've been going to Himalaya restaurant for years and have never had a bad experience. Kesar is an amazing human being and host. My daughter ordered the beef biryani and I ordered the Lahori aloo gosht with naan. Everything was cooked to perfection and while most restaurants have jacked up their prices by over 100% in some cases Himalaya still offers great low prices for high quality food. read more

I've been to Himalaya before, inspired by Anthony Bourdain's visit to the restaurant. The fish masala, as I recall, was delicious. During my latest trip I ordered Ravi's Aloo Channa Masala for a loved one and Garlic Naan with an order of Samosas. The garlic naan was excellent, with lots of garlic and cilantro on top of the naan. The samosa with chutney was good, but not the best I've tried. Placing the order and pickup were both easy. I look forward to trying more dishes from Himalaya. read more

I came here with a mom friend and it took an hour and a half for us to get our food. It was very packed so we were asked to take our strollers back to our car. I ordered food for my daughter and the owner came over and made a suggestion that he said was better - well it turned out to be a fried, spicy, samosa. It felt like an upsell which was upsetting considering I didn't bring any other food. The owner was apologetic but I really don't need to be back. read more

I went to this place on a recent visit to Houston with an Indian friend and the food was amazing and prices were very reasonable! Definitely recommend you give it a try if you like Himalayan or Indian food.
