So glad we found Shubies! What a great stop. We got somewhat distracted by all the fun times on the way in, but I'm glad we persevered to the lunch counter. Staff is very friendly and helpful and the food was outstanding! We ordered a variety of sandwiches, I had the Operator, plenty of turkey, arugula, sliced green apples and brie on a cranberry nut toasted bread. Delicious and plenty of it! (yes, I got a box to bring home half for lunch tomorrow). Everyone enjoyed their sandwiches tremendously and the experience was great. Limited seating area, but we were able to find a table to dine in. 78 years a family owned business, happy to support local! read more

Excellent gourmet market well stocked with many goodies including cheeses, spreads, crackers, candies, chips, and other snacks. There is a deli counter for meats; cheeses, salads, sandwiches, and prepared entree items. There's a nice seating area with plenty if tables to dine in. Very nice selection of wines and local beers. Very hard not to buy everything! Staff was very friendly and helpful! read more

This was a great place to go to with my friend for lunch because we each were able to order what we wanted (salad and chicken with sweet potato and broccoli). Then we each sat down and took our time to chat and have lunch. We also met the buyer who is in charge of the buying for some of the cute items they sell. I always love it here to see what they have - whether its for lunch, buy a gift or wine - and now 77 years strong in Marblehead! read more

I love Shubies, and have been going for years. When my wife and I go to eat in, I tend to get the same thing (California BLT), which I really like. Well today I chose something completely different: a meatball sub. In my 70+ years, I've had many meatball subs. This was quite probably the best meatball sub I've ever had, a meatball sub for adults. It wasn't drowning in sauce or cheese, but what was there was quality, an easy A++. While we were there, we stocked up on a number of items, all of them quality. With thanks to Carol, George, and Doug (plus their AMAZING staff). I've adored Shubies for the longest time now. My family moved to California a while back, but every time we come home to visit Marblehead, Shubies is on our list of places to visit. One of our favorite things to do is get fresh fish from the fish market just down the street, and supplement with sides from Shubies!! Their signature pasta with parmesan and peas can not be beat, and the staff are all so personable and lovely. Don't miss this gem!! read more

My favorite place to shop in town for anything from prepared, gourmet treats or simple salads to wine & beer to a lovely selection of gifts. Just got the eggplant Parmesan(excellent) with a little sauce on the side for lunch. Heated HALF in the oven and enjoyed at home with sautéed spinach, garlic and mushrooms. Plenty for lunch and lunch for tomorrow too! Should have taken a photo! read more

Shubie's is a really cool and special place that gives Marblehead a big dose of local business personality. It's part grocer, bakery, wine shop, gift shop, lunch stop and more. It's eclectic and interesting. I don't think it's a spot you can buy all your groceries at due to the emphasis on local and niche products (but any locals are welcome to correct me). That doesn't make it a bad thing, just different! To me this felt like a boutique marketplace to get items to accompany a beautiful party or stunning charcuterie board. I'm still sitting here thinking about the delightful local chocolates, adorable Jellycat London stuffed animals and huge cheese selection. Oh my! Just discovered this place and what a discovery. We were walking around Marblehead for the day and I dropped in for a quick cup of coffee. Well, that changed when I saw the wonderful food behind the counter. They have everything here but let me tell you about the sandwiches. Best meatball sub I have ever had, hands down. Roasted turkey with basil mayo, excellent. Tomato, basil and mutz was perfect. Fresh bread and great non-standard sauces and toppings. Get this, grilled pears and mutz salad...OUTSTANDING!!! Kale and chickpea salad, awesome. So many different and unusual salads and so little space in my tummy. Ah well. After lunch we're getting dinner and desert to go for later. Do yourself a favor, park the car and go inside. Once inside you won't be able to control yourself. read more

A trip to Marblehead without stocking up on artisan snacks, alcoholic delights or prepped foods from the Shubes is a trip untaken. It's, like, THE specialty grocery store of the north shore. Shubie's also introduced me to Stone & Skillet English muffins, and for that, I am forever grateful. Buy some pickles, too. Two jars of pickles: one for you, and one for your pickle-loving friend. The food here is very mediocre and sits out too long. It's barely seasoned as well. The rest of the store is ok but very expensive for what they carry. You could find similar items in Home Goods for far less money. The liquor selection is small and the food items they sell are ordinary. There is nothing special about this place. read more

I would give this store a absolutely zero. And my reasons are horrible prices and the Son is a complete fool. He walks around the store like he's some hot shot. He's has been cuddled by his mom and dad. I say unless you feel like being degraded by the staff and paying a ridiculous price for average food. Sorry it's sad because George and Kevin and Tammy deserve better. Don't go there it's a waste of money and I'll glad when I see a out of business sign . What a gem!! When we moved to the North Shore this was randomly one of our first stops. We knew nothing about it and we were in for such a delightful treat!!! If you are looking for a welcoming atmosphere look no farther. If you are looking for amazing quality speciality items, look no farther. If you are looking for unique gifts, look no farther. This might be the neatest speciality shop I've ever stumbled upon. The selection of speciality food items, gifts, wines, prepared and more is amazing. Seasonally the gift section changes too!! This place is PARADISE in a store. Everything and anything delicious and they even cater. Grocery store, gift shop, bakery, food to go you name it. All the pastries looked mouth watering I regret not getting anything sweet but i can assure you i will be making my way back. For the deli you can get almost any salad or sandwich (hot or cold) along with side dish you can think of, all incredibly delicious making your taste buds melt. It's a cool market that we stopped in for lunch. Friendly staff and a nice counter filled with many choices. Not sure if we just ordered wrong but we weren't thrilled with our choices. The lentil soup was so thick that the spoon literally stood straight up in it. Not what I would consider a soup. My sandwich was a club with turkey and cheese so I asked for the bread to be toasted. However, they made it like a panini and there was lettuce inside which became a stringy wilted mess. It wasn't very appealing. If I lived in the area, I would try it again and could certainly shop in the store as there were many interesting buys. It just didn't work for us this time. read more

I had the pleasure of living up in the North Shore area for approximately five years and would not have had as nearly a nice time living up here but for going to Shubie's. I have primarily come in for food whether it be breakfast or lunch, (and it is wonderful - today I had the Ahi Tuna Wrap which is new as of April 2017) but Shubie's also offers a grocery of a variety of different items, and lots of wines and other spirits if that's more your thing. The employees are great too - very nice and helpful and just wonderful. There is so much more I could add but suffice to say, it has been and always will be a five star establishment for me and if you are wondering if you should go here the answer is yes. read more

I love this shop. There are lots of gourmet options as well as gifts. They have all of my favorite cheeses including Humboldt fog, Cremont, Lille and Chollerhacker. The guy behind the cheese counter was also super friendly. There are several hot and cold prepared sandwiches and deli items. I got the Farmer's wrap with sweet potato kale, cheese and cranberry which was pretty good and huge (I could only finish half). My husband enjoyed his roast beef and they came with a mini bag of chips. I also love their filled shortbread cookies (with raspberry jam or milk chocolate). The only thing we did not enjoy was the "Wicked Awesome" brand brownie which was not chocolatey tasting at all. read more

Best cheeses and prepared foods available on the North Shore, bar none. Top notch, personal service. Catering! Don't forget catering - a great option if you are too busy or inexperienced to cook for your next special event; always beautifully plated and presented. A great place to buy gifts. (hint, hint!) Shubie's is a Marblehead institution that remains fresh offering a wonderful assortment of catering, eat-in and carry out food options. One can find great gifts there, stock their wine fridge there and find community there. It is a family run business and the vibe is very friendly and service oriented- in fact my husband worked with them to create menu for my 40th that reflected my love of Spain with paella and included a wine tasting featuring vineyards from the countries Ive worked in. I found this place on yelp on my way to see the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey Park. I got a Turkey, bacon, avocado wrap on a gluten free wrap. The sandwich was AMAZING! I'm not a regular, but I was passing by on a weekday morning just after 9. Went in, ordered a breakfast sandwich at the deli. Woman wrote the order on a slip, handed me a pager. I am the only customer in the deli area. I occupy myself with my phone, see a few other customers drift in, order, and get their orders while I'm standing with a pager for an egg and cheese. At the 15 minute mark I ask what's going on and 3 staffers look confused. There was sone kind of back and forth between them and the cook. I was out of time though and had to leave. I wish there had been some realization on their part that someone was waiting for an order that was apparently lost. I've eaten here before and it was good, and they sell cool stuff, so I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. Edit/follow up: since a principal thoughtfully and promptly replied to my experience I am upgrading and revising my review. I was miffed when writing the review but I guess stuff happens now and then, and I appreciate the attention to my review. I'll upgrade my review with future good sevice. read more

Established in 1948.

At Shubie's, our staff is what makes us special. Warm and cheerful, they have great knowledge of our vast array of products, and most importantly, their customer service skills are superb. Shubie's has been a fixture on Atlantic Avenue in Marblehead since 1948, and of course, we wouldn't still be here were if not for our loyal customers. We were greeted and sat quickly, but that's where the speed of things kinda came to a slow down. I'll start with some of the positives - our waitress was really nice and she had a helper who also was nothing but polite and friendly. The decor is really cool! There was no one in the entire back room of the restaurant, so I went and took a peak back there on the way to the bathroom and it had old cameras, typewriters, cool pieces of art, the main room also have some great scales of justice, and other fun features. They also had all the Halloween decor, if anyone needed to use the restroom we were told to go towards the large mirror, and I would always add on to my friends "with the creepy doll on it". After about 2 to 3 minutes my entire party had and water was brought to the table and served in plastic cups. Which at a place with white table clothes felt a little strange. At some point after our waitress returned to take drink orders and an appetizer of the calamari. She then asked "have I offered you all any bread yet" we said no, but we would love bread. She said "okay it will be $3" and walked away. We all kinda looked at each other confused, because the phrasing seemed like it was complementary bread but we were really hungry at this point and the bread ended up being really good - but it was a small portion for $3. I think 6 thinner slices in total. We waited a while before she returned for our food order. The menu has what you expect from an Italian places but also has a large section of Mexican dishes, which feels mismatched, it wasn't fusion style it was just Italian and Mexican separately, it just feels really disjointed. I went with the bolognese and one of my friends decided to order the tacos because it felt so silly to do in an Italian spot (and who doesn't like tacos generally). The calamari came out at some point after the bread, but we finished the bread, the calamari, and all our waters at a causal pace after that. We were sitting for a while before anyone came back to the room where we were seated. At this point there were maybe 3 or 4 tables sat in our room and possible one other couple up towards the front area. As many of us were out of water, I headed up towards the bar area or host stand to see if I could find someone. I ran into the guy who was assisting with our table and asked if we could get some more water - which happened promptly. About 5 to 10 minutes after that our waitress returned with even more water and told us food would be out soon. The food arrived maybe 10 minutes after that, so it had been a while since we ordered. The bolognese was fine, the pasta wasn't overcooked, the sauce lacked some depth and the meat was a little firmer than anticipated but overall it was still okay. They did offer some Parmesan cheese to be added to any of the pastas or tacos. The total for 5 people, with no alcohol, one soda, one order of calamari, the $3 bread, and the already added gratuity (which they did mention was already added in at 20% and it was also stated on the bill) ended up being $208. Overall, the food was fine, nothing to make a special trip for. Service was friendly, but very slow. The vibes were a little mismatched - Mexican food with Italian food and plastic cups with white table clothes. Overall, it's a fine experience if you are needing a reservation.

In a word: fantastic! A hidden gem on the North Shore for sure! Shubbies is great. They have an excellent wine selection and an extremely knowledgeable staff that will assist in any questions you may have. They offer wine "specials' which is a nice bonus. The prepared food section is amazing! The balsamic glazed salmon is perfection, the roasted veggies are delicious, and the chicken salad is the perfect combination of chicken, mayo, and greens. As a lighter option, the salad bar has many offerings that will please even the most difficult of crowds. One of the best items they sell are Maria's Pita Chips which you can't find at traditional grocery stores or markets. In addition to all the simply irresitable food selections, there is a unique gifts and home section where you can find really cool unexpected items that would make perfect gifts! It is like one stop shopping! So, if you're ever in the Marblehead/Salem area Shubies is certainly worth the trip. I gurantee you won't be disappointed. I came to town a couple of days ago to meet up with a friend in the hopes that we would be able to get close to the water but alas the weather has been still quite chilly! She told me we HAVE to go pop in to this local market in town and once she mentioned the name I realized I'd heard of it. Beautiful space and all the staff were super friendly, I didn't end up buying anything but my friend had her heart set on a bottle of wine which they were happy to help her find. All in all a good experience except for when she went to cash out and I noticed how much her little bottle of vino was a bit overpriced considering I had told her how I had had it at a restaurant the other night and she paid almost as much! I guess there is a lot to be said for where the space is and how long they've been around but she certainly was happy to pay for it and all in all a good time was had! Shubie's is more than a gourmet grocery. First of all, it's family operated and you can tell by the service, attention to detail and knowledge of the staff. If you need prepared foods, it's all delicious. Want to taste some cheese or something? There's always samples located throughout the store. The wine section isn't huge, but it's well stocked and a recommendation is always available. Their bakery is fantastic. Their non-food items are also a great draw. If you need a hostess gift or a kitchen related gift, you'll find it here. Lots of cool, aesthetically pleasing gadgets, serving ware, cocktail napkins, seasonal treats, etc. Sure, it's pricey but they've got to pay the rent and they do deliver on quality and unique variety. My only problem is restraining myself from shopping there every day. read more

This place I love. My family lives in Marblehead, so I head over to Shubie's when I visit. Their Mediterranean chicken salad is to die for. I love every kitchen knick-knack they're offering. They've got so many great wines to choose from. Before deciding to buy, they give you samples of the deli foods to try. It's a nice market place to get everyone a gift or just have a great lunch break. The people there are so sweet and whatever you are looking for, they are really helpful. They give fantastic ideas if you do not know what you're looking for. A friendly, great place overall! read more

Good selection of seasonal product from farms that range from fairly local to c'mon you're not even close to local, but I'll take your delicious looking peppers anyway. There's some individual vendors that are real winners, and other ones that aren't so great- but since I can't review them individually (or am too lazy to take notes that good) I suggest that you'll quickly know who's good and who's best ignored after a couple of visits. it's expensive, and it gets a bad rap as overhyped, but I like it and think it's a great place to stop when I'm in the neighborhood. read more
