there are times when hearing outside of your own thoughts can prove to be beneficial. the gain may be of informational value, or comical worth, even. the time my friend Ellen told me about visiting her neighbor's family members who live in southern (way south) Illinois, for example, was one thing I'll never forget hearing. for her, the trip started out like any road trip might. she experienced a sense of freedom and disconnect with her hand soaring up and down as she cut roller coaster track patterns in the torrid summer air. it was July, and naturally humid. one adjusts to that sort of thick climate after time. nevertheless, the 65 mile per hour wind blowing through your hair in such elements is never a bad thing whether you're in Danville or Phuket. as it happened, she had just past dutch mills driving toward tatumville. from the 127, they turned off onto sandusky, one of those old rock roads that creates a white cloud of dust transitioning from plank pose to cobra, then on to downward dog for a full chaturanga, loose rock particle and all. the drive had turned into a mystic tunnel of foliage, shading the aphelion of July. just ahead in the distance though, there was a clearing. it was the meadow of Sandusky lane and it was quickly approaching. standing in the kitchen, leaning up against a marble countertop with a glass of wine in my hand I was giving my full attention to Ellen, who said, "and there it was. there was the trailer. it was a double wide." "a double wide?" I said. "out there in the woods, propped up on cinder blocks like you'd imagine it?" "actually, yes it was" Ellen replied. "floods are not uncommon in those parts, so the added height helps avoid an infestation of river snakes in these people's homes. anyway, we pull up to the black, steal grate steps. the neighbor got out first and said, 'are you sure you're ready for this?'" Ellen took a moment to let out a dormant giggle, standing across from me in a pair of heels and a cocktail dress looking very elegant. "we've come all this way," Ellen said to the neighbor, going back to her story. "I don't see any point in not stopping in to say hello." so they did. they climbed up the creaky steps to the trailer and let themselves in. in front of the door, seated in an abused lazy boy atop thin, brown and yellow flower patterned carpet with no padding between the wooden plywood of the trailer's floor and the carpet sat grandma. grandma was rocking back and forth and didn't seem to notice the guests who'd just arrived. or maybe she did notice but just didn't give enough of a damn to say hello. instead, she said, "Amber Lynne. get your fat ass in here and pull the ticks off this damn baby." in strolls Amber, a 15 year old carrying a cooler of beer. "oh, hi!" announced Amber. "we wasn't expectin ya till a little later. that's alright; we'll fire up the grill anyhow." Ellen hadn't moved a great deal past the entrance of the doorway. "I wouldn't have gone into that place either" "it wasn't that I didn't want to go in. I've seen worse. what worried me was that grandma was lighting a cigarette just before yelling at Amber to pull those ticks off the baby, who I supposed was Amber's." "it's a shame that an old woman wouldn't know better than to smoke near a baby" I said. "still, that's not what concerned me" Ellen replied "well what the hell was it? you don't like the smell of smoke? I can understand that" I proclaimed. "it was that sweet old grandma had a fucking oxygen tank sitting next to her - close enough for the tubes to feed a fair amount of clean air into her lungs as a juxtaposition to the overabundance of nicotine and tar filled clouds from her camel wides. I wanted to be in front of the screen door so I'd be launched out through it and onto the lawn when that thing exploded!" "ha!" I laughed. "what a sight. perfect anti-smoking campaign, I thought" Ellen said. "beer was in the cooler? I thought this girl was 15." "she is. and yes, it was beer. everyone in the house had their own cooler. they sat on them so their beer wouldn't get stolen... they steal beer from each other" Ellen and I laughed like hyenas in the Syrian desert circling a lost nomad scooping puddles of sand thinking in his head that he's discovered an oasis of cool, refreshing water. clearly, I did not have my headphones on at the time of Ellen's story. I did, however, have my E4c's on this morning at 8:16 AM when a man in an overcoat stuck his hands into the closing doors of the N Judah. I know the sound it made; I've heard it a thousand times. I could tell by the scrunching faces of people reading blindness and cat's cradle that the noise was piercing. I didn't hear it though. I had on my E4c's. I didn't hear anything except kings of leon and it was glorious. I didn't even hear that guy on market and 2nd asking me to spare some change for a hooker with a hand grenade...

I asked if I could upgrade to the E4c by paying some extra dough and the guy while friendly, said no.

So I took my laptop here to get it reinstalled. Luckily, all my important documents and stuff are on the cloud so I didn't have to worry about losing any data. I just wanted to be able to use my laptop when needed. Took it there on a Monday and it was ready by the next day. I received an invoice but no explanation as to why it happened and what I should do if it happens again. Oh well. I'll just cross my fingers and hope it'll be fine for a few years.

TechCity (Park Ridge) - Disappointing experience…read more I brought my son's Lenovo ThinkPad in for a hinge repair estimate and clearly explained at drop-off that it was urgent since he was returning to college on January 19 and needed it back ASAP. Despite that, I didn't hear anything for nearly two weeks. When they finally contacted me, communication was very disorganized. Different techs called at different times, but none seemed aware of previous conversations, and I had to keep repeating the situation. At one point, I was told they didn't realize I needed it back quickly -- even though I explicitly stated that when I dropped it off. The delay and lack of coordination made an already stressful situation worse. I was expecting professional, timely service, especially after clearly communicating the urgency, but unfortunately that wasn't my experience. I did ask to speak to the owner and was told "he isn't available." If you need fast, organized turnaround, you may want to look elsewhere.
