I usually don't leave negative yelp reviews, but my experience was so terrible that I had to share to warn others. First of all, it took 30 minutes for the waitress to take even take our order. I ordered a kalbi aloha rice bowl (that comes with Bok choy). The kalbi came first, and then we waited about an hour for the rest of the bowl and our other food to arrive. By then, my kalbi was already too cold to even eat. Not to mention that my rice bowl didn't come with Bok choy that it was listed to come with. We had to ask multiple times for utensils and water, usually a given for any restaurant. Additionally, usually my choice of tip will represent the level of service we received, but we didn't get a choice in that either. There was already an 18% service charge included when we were only a party of 2. No wonder the staff has no incentive to provide any semblance of decent service. Food itself was mediocre, but definitely not worth the price. Highly recommend that folks eat elsewhere. read more

I am really torn on what to rate this place and how to write this review. We visited Shutters twice during our stay at the Kauai Beach Resort and my review is broken down as follows: 4 Stars for Entertainment: Each night we visited there was different musicians. Both were really good and they were the highlight of our time at Shutters. 3 Stars for Drinks: The Lava Flow mixed drink was the best on the menu. The Mai Tai's were also good, but we would skip the Blue Hawaii next time. 3 Stars for Service: Our servers were fairly prompt for most of our stay, even went we were on their outdoor patio. However, the food took longer than anticipated to arrive and we had trouble getting refills one night. 2 Stars for Food: We tried several food items on our visits and they were average at best. We had the Kalua Pork Quesadilla (pretty bland), 5 Spice Rubbed Spare Ribs (larger than expected, but average), Blue Hawaiian Pizza (the pork needed seasoning and there was just a ton of arugula and very little pineapple and mozzarella), and the Park Rach Short Rib Nachos (the best item we had). Shutters Lounge is located inside Kauai Beach Resort and is a nice relaxing place to dine at with lovely live music playing in the background. Our server was very jovial and welcoming. You can really take your time and enjoying spending time with your friends and family. The drinks are very good here, especially the Lava Flow! So delicious. After a week at the resort, we have had shutters a few times. The cheeseburger is really good, seriously. The fish and chips are also really good. We ordered the Mai Tai and Old Fashioned. The drinks were pretty decent. For nibbling we ordered the umami fries and chicken wings. The umami fries were great too. But the service was super slow!! We never got our chicken wings. Our server was generally very sweet and polite but just discounted the delay in the chicken wings by saying the kitchen is a mess (supposedly they share the kitchen with the resort's other main restaurant). We stayed at this resort and ended up trying this place several times. We always came during happy hour because WOW those prices are high. So the first time was great, fast service by the fire pit and we loved our food and drinks. My husband just wanted more shrimp because three piece was pretty tiny for $9 but it was tasty. I loved their garlic hummus and naan bread. Second time....not so much. Spent about two hours waiting for one appetizer for him and a single flatbread for me and drinks. I would expect it if it was busy but there was one big table and maybe two or three small ones filled and we watched everyone get their food and drinks even though we had been waiting longer....it was pretty empty. The flatbread was really cold, even though the waitress assured us several times that they were just waiting on that to come out of the oven and made a comment that the guy in the kitchen was just old and slow (kinda rude?). Kinda weird conversation since the rest of the staff was more respectful and quiet. Food portions were tiny for the price but we were hungry and didn't have a car to go into town every night. We waited forever for our check and it turned out they had charged the table next to us for our meal, and our ticket read about $20 higher than ours. She explained this and I was fine with them taking time to fix it, but after about 15 minutes of waiting I just went up to the bar and asked for another person to help us....seriously, after two hours we just wanted to go up to our room! They apologized a lot and another waitress helped me and made sure they didn't charge us for the other table. So it was a weird mix of a fine experience and one really bad one. For the most part the food is amazing!! Do not order the steak. It is hands down the worst streak I've ever had. No flavor or seasoning period. Fish & Chips is done right and the rice bowl is beyond amazing. Staff is super friendly and super nice. I was always ordering at the bar. The first few times I ordered is was good, got my check when my food arrived, left a tip and took it back to the room. They don't deliver to the rooms just fyi. A Few nights later a different bartender took my order and told me when I got my check that gratuity was already add to my ticket and that I didn't need to tip more unless I wanted too. What!!!! No one told me that before. She said oh yeah every single one of their orders already have it added. I said every day, and she said yep and always. I Went back down again another night. They have amazing breakfast options that are pretty pricey but you're on vacation so what can you expect! At night my husband and I loved to sit at the bar because they have live music and enjoy some drinks! Our bartender Logan was amazing! We loved seeing him every night because he was so kind and willing to give us recommendations of places to visit on the island since he grew up there. He was so nice and even remembered our names, so big shout out to him! On another night there was only one spot at the bar so my husband stood while we drank at the bar waiting for our table. The nice lady that was seating people (I wish I got her name) was so kind and brought him a chair after a while and said she felt bad and wanted him to sit. The place gets very busy at night and can feel like you're waiting for forever or not being acknowledged in the line so maybe make reservations if you can! Otherwise it's a chill spot to enjoy a drink especially if you're staying in the resort since the pool bar closes so early (6pm) while this place is open until 10pm! read more

Jetlagged, and starving after a long day of flying, we decided to come here because we were exhausted and didn't have a rental car to find somewhere to eat in Lihue or Kapaa. Also, Shutters was much less intimidating to us than Naupaka Terrace. So we had a very mediocre meal at Shutters. I had a burger that was average, and my wife had French dip that wasn't much better. I will say it filled us up good though, and it was enjoyable to finally have some real food.We don't drink, so I cannot speak for any of the cocktails and Mai Tais, but the food is just ok. Based on the service and the timeliness of the wait staff- it took 1 full hour of a long 60 minutes to get our food. We ordered two appetizers to share. The food quality was good- we had the lobster fries and the farmers flatbread. I am glad the food was so good after waiting so long. The waitress did not even care and didn't acknowledge the wait either. My Pina colada came quick but my husbands beer took 35 minutes to come. A friend and I were staying at the Kauai Beach Resort for one night while we transfer to our next hotel. We sat down outside and waited at a dirty table for 5 minutes before a server gave us menus (and did not clean the table... my friend did that). We then waited 15 minutes for a server to take our order. Eventually a visitor next to us physically brought a server to our table. The server then instructed us that they were no longer serving outside, given the intermittent sprinkling. We moved inside and sat a table for 5 minutes without anyone checking in on us. Again, a patron next to us told us the likelihood of a server talking to us was low. We decided to leave, therefore I cannot review the food or drink because after 25 minutes we had neither. On the surface this place is great. It has a great atmosphere, pretty good food and a descent happy hour, sadly it only lasts an hour and a half. One thing to keep in mind is once this place gets more than 5 tables to serve good luck. I love the scenery and the atmosphere here. I ordered Lava flow and it was one of my favorite drinks here in Hawaii. They also have lobster Unami fries that is quite popular. There is always a singer at night to perform at the bar and it's super romantic for couples. We had the same server both nights. We tried several of the menu items. I recommend the poke, flat breads and sliders. Good atmosphere with live music. If you are staying at the hotel you should check it out. We had one miner issue with our bill. charging us for lobster and receiving chicken. The food at the shutter was excellent. I can not say the same for the service. I gave my server (Gina) my card to pay for my bill. When she came back from running my card, I noticed an extra charge on my card for $179.06 extra. When I asked her what the cost was. She said, look, I only charged you what your bill was $60. When I spoke with the manager, she said that she did not charge my card for that amount. When it clearly showed it on my bank statement. Also the manager showed me a receipt showing her having a table with that amount. Long story short. She had another table with that amount and accidentally charged my card that amount. I was refunded the next day. I get it things happen, and people make mistakes. What makes me mad instead of admitting she made a mistake. She lied about it and told me she had no idea how my card was charged that amount and denied doing it. I don't like liars, and I feel like the manager didn't help out that much. This is the casual bar and restaurant attached to Kaui Beach Resort. We ate here quite a number of times during our stay and preferred their menu choices over the main restaurant on-site next door. Good service with lovely live music too from different local artists. The food is a little pricey but worth it to stay close to the hotel and good portion sizes.
