I want to check out the western most sports bar in the USA. We arrived about 5:30pm and were greeted and seated immediately. As with most restaurants in Kauai it open air environment and a view of ocean. A great place to watch games and a lively atmosphere. Happy hour is available daily from 3-6pm. Our waitress was very accommodating as she notified us that we could order our two drink minimum to qualify for the happy hour food specials before 6pm and she would serve later. Flashback price on chicken wing of $0.25 each, max 10 per person. We ordered 20 buffalo wings and fish tacos. They have a great selection of the local Kauai Brewing Company beers, another reason we want to try this place. We started we the pale ale and the Cook IPA. Cold, tasty and refreshing. We also tried the chicken IPA and Fonz IPA. All were great! Our favorite was the Cook IPA. The chicken wings had a nice heat level and were perfect accompanied by beer. This is a great, fun, affordable option while staying in Poipu!!! We've already been here twice. The key is to go during their happy hour time from 3-6pm daily. The first time we spent just over $100 for a family of 5, and last night we got out of there for $88. That is a feat in this part of town! The happy hour is unbeatable. $7 drinks and 25 cent wings. Note that you have to have minimum two drinks per person, but they don't have to be alcoholic--we got a cocktail as our first and soda water as the second. The cocktails are quite large, so you can still get the $7 price if you order a soda or sparkling water as your second drink. The waitress was super helpful and let us know that last night! We went for taco Tuesday yesterday and the tacos were $1 each! They were good--not insane but great for the price and hit the spot. The service is great and the food and drinks come out quickly despite being busy. The drinks are standard fare, nothing crazy delicious, but for the price it's great. The food is all yummy. We especially love their chicken wings! Home-fried and lots of meat. All of the dipping sauces are excellent too. We haven't had a bad dish here! We went to Kalapaki Joe's a few times during our stay in Po'ipu, and we had fun every time. The World Cup was on the TVs, and everyone was having a blast. The first time we went was around 2p while we waited to check-in our accommodations. The lady told us that she was busy doing a bunch of different tasks but we could take a seat if we didn't mind waiting for our order to be taken. We appreciated the communication and decided to take a seat. The food is decent "bar food," and we got drinks from the Happy Hour menu. We went during Happy Hour on the other two visits for drinks and to watch the World Cup. On one occasion, there was a musician playing reggae which we enjoyed. Overall, we liked it at Joe's. Are there better places to eat/drink? Sure, but slow service and "loud people" in a sports bar during the World Cup was expected. read more

Kalapaki Joes is a great bar and grill. It fits the island. Though not on the beach it's very nice. The food is standard fare for Poipu area but outstanding compared to mainland places. My spouse had their prawns, chicken wings and calamari. She mostly enjoyed the wings, then calamari and the coconut prawns. Primarily because she's not a deep fry type person but was with her fellow golfers looking for something simple. And it was and very tasty. Not overly oily or heavily battered. Kalapaki Joe's is such a great spot! We first noticed it from the road during a bike ride after spotting a sign out front advertising a mimosa special. That was all the convincing we needed. We stopped by later and enjoyed a delicious breakfast with drinks, a great view, and even caught some football. Honestly, this was the breakfast I had been craving- I love breakfast tacos! We were staying at a nearby resort, and while the food there was good, I'd choose Kalapaki Joe's instead. It's also just a short walk from Poipu Beach, so we stopped in a second time after snorkeling and seeing turtles. I love how casual it is- walking in with swim gear and messy hair is totally fine. This is a nice little no-frills sports bar with a big drink menu and a great mix of local favorites and sports bar basics. We came around 7pm on a Tuesday. It wasn't too busy. My boyfriend had a lot of modifications to his order, and everything still came out perfectly. The portions are big. The food is good. The fish tacos $5 it was Merlin, and none of us liked those. The shells tasted stale, I wouldn't order them again. Do NOT come here for watching sports! We had come to watch a World Cup semi-finals game - there were ~30 others there for the same reason. Each table had asked for some volume (rather than country music) and the host told each of us no (sometimes rudely). Came here after being recommended as a great place to go for a game or a fight. Came as a party of 1. Was hoping to grab a beer and watch a fight. Plenty of space inside, empty spots at the bar and tables. Missed the entire fight card standing outside. I literally spent an hour standing and checking in every 10 mins or so after multiple people left but never was let in. I didn't even mind standing or being given a stool next to the empty tables near the bar posts and I politely let the staff know I would be happy anywhere. "I was told sorry, that's our bar rules". What are the bar rules 1/10 capacity is too much? I watched waitresses and staff seated watching tv and never got in. It wasn't rowdy, crowded or anything that would require a limited crowd. I recommend not going if there's any sort of event going on. Unless you plan on parking it at a table at 4:00 pm for the entire night and never leave. I found glass in my mango margarita. They also serve Costco frozen items. My group of 4 came by for happy hour on a Monday at 4:30pm. Happy hour is from 3pm-6pm daily. We were seated right away next to a big window over looking a tennis court and a sliver of the ocean. Inside had so many large TV screens showing a basketball game. Our server was Jason and he was great. He had no attitude, was friendly and was honest with us. When I noticed their Monday happy hour special was a pork, chicken and cilantro fried wontons I asked if it was from Costco and he admitted it was. I didn't want to ask about their wings but I suspect it is also from Costco, at least it is definitely not made in house. Their happy hour had specific rules. Wings were $0.25 a pc and can only be ordered in 5, 10, 15 or 20 qty. Each table can have a maximum of 20 wings with each diner ordering 2 drinks minimum. It can be non alcoholic. That means if you are a table of 4, or a table of 10, you can only have 5 pc per person or 2 pcs per person. Their happy hour drinks is huge. Mango margaritas, mojitos and mai tais were $6 each. You can get a good buzz on just one. But it just tastes ok. You can add li hing or tajin rim for an additional $1. On my 2nd mango margarita order I sucked up a piece of glass. Luckily I didn't cut myself and Jason apologized and replaced my drink. Wings were ok. Comes with ranch and buffalo sauce. We also asked for blue cheese on the side. Coconut shrimps were ok too. We waited to be seated as the sign stated, stood there for 10 min, decided to just sit down (saw everyone else doing it), we were not greeted for another 20 min, finally the older bartender lady came by with water, and a menu, waited another 10 min for her to take out order, and every time we spoke, she just rolled her eyes at us, didn't bother to acknowledge every 'thank you' we said to her. She was just NOT a nice person -- maybe she was having a shitty day. NOPE, we see her laughing her ass off at the local older gentlemen sitting at the bar tables. We were looking for a place to eat that wasn't our hotel and this one was pretty close by. There was a sign after walking in that they were short staffed and to be patient. We were able to seat ourselves. We got a spot near the windows and got to enjoy some people and chicken watching and ocean views. It kind of felt like we were in a treehouse! It was not busy and we were able to order our food right away. We got the special which was fried rice with eggs and gravy and the surfer's breakfast. We were there two days ago for happy hour. The prices are good for the island. But the fish Taco was the most disappointing that I have had anywhere. Flavor was seriously lacking. The onion rings were decent and you get a good portion. The coconut shrimp was pretty tasty and a great happy hour deal. Drinks are good sized and about average in taste. I wouldn't expect great quality here, but if you are looking for a relatively inexpensive outing, compared to other places on the island, it might be worth your time. We would have hung around for the music, but the cackling women in the adjacent booth were laughing so loudly that we couldn't stand being there any longer. read more

We stayed in Poi Pu and had lunch and then breakfast at Kalapaki Joer's during the week of May 24 - 30. It is a convenient placer to grab a good meal if in the Poi Pu area. The breakfast menu is amazing especially the Macadamia nut and banana pancakes. The lunch we had was very good, but we were not asked how we wanted the patties cooked and we forgot to ask for it to be medium, so it was a bit dry. The staff was top notch and special call out to the waitress who helped us because she rescued my wife's purse when we left without it and saved it for us when we remembered in a panic.
