I just completed a 7 month remodel and hired 8 different subcontractors for various tasks. S&I was the WORST. Dealing with the project manager felt like I was dealing with a used car salesman! He was unreliable, he enjoyed criticizing the work of my other subcontractors, and on top of that he brought a prospective client into my home without asking permission. I happened to be home at the time, and gave him a piece of my mind. His excuse was that he didn't know that I would be there, otherwise he wouldn't have brought someone over. That explanation made me even more pissed b/c it showed he was intentionally doing something he knew I wouldn't approve of. We have lived in our 140 year-old house for over 30 years. During that time we have done several remodels and repairs, including a new slab foundation. I can sincerely say, I wish I had found S&I a long time ago! We recently discovered that our main floor bathroom had been leaking under our foundation for quite some time. After numerous tests we were unable to pinpoint where the leak was originating from so we decided to gut the bathroom and redo all of the plumbing. Raz and his team at S&I were extremely quick to respond, gave a reasonable quote, and got to work. I have never worked with a contractor that was more responsive and diligent. They worked 7 days a week and never missed a beat. The bathroom required a lot of tile work and the result is some of the best craftsmanship I've ever seen. Raz was in contact with us every step of the way and his forman Pato could not have been nicer. They accommodated minor design changes easily, and were very tolerant of my layman's knowledge of the work involved. S&I did a great job on a new roof and new roof deck for our home. They also fixed a longstanding drainage issue on the roof, and moved the plumbing on the roof deck so that it is well concealed. We had this company redo our crappy bathroom. It was a complete remodel from top to bottom. We love the bathroom and we are very pleased with their work. The crew was responsive and friendly, and David the project manager worked very closely with us, and was always available whenever we needed to reach him. He worked with us to choose fixtures and materials that were of good quality, and fit within our budget. The only issues we had were that the project took several days longer than expected because of permitting delays, and we had to ask for some minor things to be redone that were not up to our standards. Do not hire this contractor: S & I Construction, 287 17th St., Oakland, CA 94612 (David B, Project Manager) Lic # 930154 I didn't haggle with the price and believed David B statements about quality of workmanship and now feel I paid way too much for the job that was performed. The outcome was very poor in terms of quality and follow up. Preparation 1- Workers laid down a plastic covering on our hardwood floors, that had an adhesive on one side, designed for carpet a. This caused the adhesive to stick to the wood and the finish to be damaged b. I had to insist that the floor sub-contractor come back and perform touchups i. There is still evidence of damage 2- No mention was made prior to the start of the job, regarding facilities or support needed by the homeowner a. Bathroom sink was utilized for cleaning paint brushes and as a source of water b. Waste water was dumped in the ground around our tree in front of our home Paint Job 1- I pointed out multiple holidays and poor pre-paint prep, especially on our brand new, paint-ready windows a. Touch ups failed to address these defects and I decided the workers were either unwilling or unable to complete the job i. Brush marks, paint drops, inadequate coverage, paint on glass ii. David B informed me that they intentionally didn't paint the frames fully as we don't want to have too many coats on the wood (?) b. On our brand new door i. No apparent sanding prep was done ii. Job incomplete as they didn't paint the edges of the door iii. Surrounding frame was poorly prepped and painted Floor refinishing 1- Excess coat of sealer puddles that had to be re-sanded and another coat of sealer applied 2- Sanding marks from mechanical sander are in evidence Project Management · David B was more concerned about picking up a check than quality control. When he contacted me after the worker "finished", he contacted me via text asking, "when can I pick up the check?". Nothing regarding the outcome of the work. I had to ask him to come by so we could take a look at the defects. After the worker finished his touch ups, again, it was, "when can I pick up the check?", not how do things look now? Or did everything get fixed? Quite a disappointment, considering David's claims regarding the company standards of quality and workmanship. Overall, a very disappointing experience and you can do what you want with my feedback, but I can assure you I will advise anyone who asks, NOT to hire your company. read more

After interviewing 3 contractors I didn't feel comfortable giving my project to any of them, until I found S&I construction . I called them a few days later I met with Daniel and right away I felt at ease with giving them the project. I was moving my preschool to another location in the city of Berkeley, the hardest city to deal with when it comes to codes and inspections but Daniel and his crew did a great job. Sergio the Carpenter did a great job , the plumbers worked long days and they did a great job dealing with the city of Berkeley inspectors. All the workers worked everyday, they put in long hours to get the project done on time since we had a deadline to leave the other location. Parts of the project ended up being quite complicated, frustrating and challenging and required a lot of patience and troubleshooting. David and his guys were great!
