I explained that I was a complete newbie, that I had a 5w rod/reel combo and that I was fishing a small pond generally. I asked him to select some flies for me based on the information that I gave him since I didn't know the first thing about selecting flies. He gave me six flies, a box and recommend some extra line. I bought it all at a cost of well over $100. The next day I was told by an experienced fly fisherman that the flies I bought were much to big for my size line. I had no idea. So I wrote to Harry's and explained that I was given the wrong size flies. No one answered my email. Today I went back to Harry's to return the products that I had purchased a few days earlier. (I live over an hour from the store) I asked the same salesperson for a refund. He refused, stating that "It would be too hard to look up." Bottom line, even though I gave the salesperson exactly the information necessary, I was offered and bought over $100 in supplies that I can not possibly use. When I told this to the salesperson today, he just shrugged his shoulders. There is no doubt that I was taken advantage of because I am new to the sport of fly fishing. I ordered a wing on Mar 2, it was delivered to my condo complex on Mar 6 and the product was missing from inside. I pursued the issue with my mailroom as well as the local post office and both entities said to work with the company because the package should have been insured so that a claim could be submitted. Unfortunately the package was not insured. As a result I am out $800+. I tried working with Jonathan and Jennifer and neither of them acknowledged the issue but rather blamed my mailroom stating that it was signed for and as a result they washed their hands of the issue. The shop came highly recommended from my buddies at Patrick AFB and unfortunately their level of customer service was not up to par. This could have been prevented by applying insurance onto the package and allowing the USPS claim process to work itself out. I initially came in to purchase a 9-foot board I had my eye on. After deciding to buy it, I stepped out briefly to grab my son so he could help me load it into my truck. When I returned, the board was gone--needless to say, I was extremely disappointed. I spoke with a salesperson named Dave, who explained that the board actually wasn't supposed to be on the sales floor--it had been custom-made for the shop and was pulled by the general manager and placed in an office. Even so, Dave didn't stop there. He took the time to listen to my situation and understand how much this meant to me, especially as it was intended to be my Father's Day gift. Dave went out of his way to help and connected me with the manager, Chip. Chip took things to the next level--he made calls to the general manager and even reached out to corporate to see if anything could be done. After about 45 minutes of effort, he came back with incredible news: they got approval to sell me the board. Neither Dave nor Chip had to go to those lengths, but they did--and that level of customer care is rare. They could have easily said no and moved on, but instead they went out of their way to make my day. As a local, I'll be out riding waves on this board and proudly telling this story.
