These are just about the nicest people you could encounter - friendly, very attentive and helpful. But there needs to be a new chef. My husband got a salad with old lettuce and his fried shrimp was rubbery. I ordered enchiladas and they were not good. The flavor came from chili powder but I could not taste anything else that usually makes enchiladas taste savory, like cumin, onion and other ingredients. I ordered cheese but got chicken, which was too dry. If we ever went back I would order breakfast food, and based on other reviews, it would be good. We stopped here on a long road road trip specifically because we wanted to support small businesses in the area. Unfortunately, we received the worst service of either my husband and I's memory. First, the waitress comes by to take our drink order and my husband was in the restroom. No problem, he told me what we wanted before he left so I place the drink order. Then a party that was waiting to be seated when he went to the restroom was sat, ordered and got their food before the waitress even came back to take our order or deliver our drinks. The waitress had the audacity to blame the poor service on my husband using the restroom, would imagine lots of people stop after driving hundreds of miles... My drink was made wrong (I don't think it's unreasonable to not want ice in my water) and our meal was delivered cold. The group that was seated well after us finished their meal before our food was delivered. We watched it sit in the pickup window so long we were on the verge of walking out. Should have just went and made a sandwich. It wasn't worth the price of the meal cold. I have a lot of patience and compassion, but this level of service is unacceptable when someone has all of 5 small tables they are handling. Could also tell it wasn't a one off by the way the kitchen staff repeatedly and frustratedly yelled for pickup of our meal. Really disappointing, as we're always looking for cool local businesses to be repeat customers for and although the vibe was amazing we'll never stop here again. read more

Yum!!! This place was great. Great food and even better service. We got the huevos rancheros Christmas style (red and green sauce) and a side biscuit with gravy. Both were good. This was a delicious find! The place is dog friendly and the seating outside was nice. The people were incredibly friendly and chatted with us. Hubs had an omelette with hash browns and biscuits/gravy. The hash browns were shredded potatoes, not frozen. I had the blueberry pancakes with sausage. The pancakes were the right amount of sweet and the sausage is made locally. Breakfast was outstanding! We did not see a sign and only found out about this place from the motel where we stayed. Food was delicious and fast, very easy to eat on the road. The service was great too. The girl at the counter was so sweet, upbeat and helpful. I had the Kari without cheese, basically a veggie hash topped with eggs over medium and the Christmas sauce on the side. Preferred the green- wasn't spicy and was flavorful. He ordered a quesadilla but veggie- asked for the same that was on the Kari. Not super easy to handle while driving but was good. I also added and OJ to go and it's fresh and so good. read more

Today is the 12th day of a road-trip that has taken us from California's Monterey Bay to Beatrice NE, Joplin MO, and a return trip home following the Mother Road, Route 66. My breakfast experience this morning at Kix on 66 was unquestionably the best dining experience of any on this trip. From the moment I walked in the door and was immediately recognized and seated I knew this was going to be a good experiences. The team that is Kix on 66 did not disappoint, they operate like a finely tuned machine. I had coffee in front of me in well under a minute. Our waiter checked in in under two minutes. Our meal was fast on the table and our coffee was topped off repeatedly by several team members. It is rare to see restaurant staff work as a single team that is so focused on the customer having a satisfying dining experience. Kudos to Kix on 66 management for their attention to training and to the team that has taken their training to heart and make it happen for the customer. We'll be back again tomorrow before go ing back on the road. read more

this great place to eat is like taking you back to a piece of this towns history. Its a local spot where the waitstaff know customers by name and the food is home cooked by the chefs with care. I went for the burger and fries which was filling. The guy next to me had the taco plate at the counter bar. Fantastic! We stopped here in 2020 during a road trip and it had been on our minds ever since. So much that we ended up stopping here again on our way back from a weekend in Santa Fe. They have wonderful food and the best spot to shake out your legs on Route 66. They even have a dog menu! Which Nala (our friend's dog who is traveling with us) loved! Based purely on safety protocols, half the staff are not wearing masks and those that are are wearing them under their chin. I observed beverage pouring and the adding of ice completely unmasked. There is no spacing between table and the appear to seat everyone, at capacity. Cooks are unmasked. Also they killed my eggs. All condiments are on the table. Stopped here for breakfast about a year ago and was expecting a similar awesome experience. Something has changed making Kix on 66 stand out as average instead of terrific. My wife and I stopped in for breakfast yesterday and we both ordered the Rise and Shine breakfast, 2 eggs, hash browns, breakfast meat and toast. The good news is the eggs were cooked properly and the hash browns were good. The bad news is that both of us thought the toast was tasteless and the butter used on it tasted artificial, like imitation butter. The rye bread had little rye taste and the sourdough was by no means sourdough. My wife is a baker and trust me when I say that we know what bread should taste like. Furthermore the bacon was very thin and of low quality, didn't really taste like any bacon we have had before. The home made sausage had a faint taste of sausage but was generally very bland. McDonalds sausage is several orders of magnitude better! Service was very good and coffee was good too. Kix on 66 has transformed itself from an awesome 5 star breakfast diner to one equal to Denny's or McDonalds. We will likely try another place next time we drive through Tucumcari. read more

This looks like it used to be a Denny's, but has been redecorated with various Route 66 memorabilia. The food and service were very good, and we all enjoyed our breakfast. There is a selection of Route 66 items for sale at the front of the restaurant-shirts, tin signs, etc. Very welcome change to our dinner the previous night. There aren't many choices in a Tucumcari, and I'd definitely recommend Kix for your dining needs! read more

The patty melt was crazy good. If you don't eat patty melts you wouldn't understand just how hard it is to get a decent patty melt. Rye, cheese, meat. Add fire. I mean it's not exactly rocket science but somehow finding a decent patty melt is harder than finding a sober priest on St Paddy's day. It's a little off the freeway but worth the extra five minute drive if you're passing by on your way to somewhere. They only do breakfast and lunch and close at 2:00 due to the weird business licensing rules the town has, so get there early. read more

Authentic diner on Route 66. We stopped in to get a breakfast sandwich for the road. Funny that I saw 2 kinds of b'fast sandwiches in the Yelp photos, but when I went into order one, the cashier said they only had the croissant one. She rang it up as all separate items (sourdough toast, bacon, eggs and cheese). I realized after I ordered, it would probably have been less expensive to have gotten the croissant sandwich and just changed out the breads, rather than getting it all charged al la cart.
