Sierra Feed & Saddlery has become our number one place to buy wild bird seed. We love our wild birds and enjoy helping them get through the winter, by feeding them for the winter months. With that said it has been harder and harder to justify spending the money on seed because of the increasing prices or lack of quality at the big box stores. We normally buy the no mess blend from Moana Lane Nursery but at $59 for 20 pounds it hard to swallow. On a whim today we stopped here and took a look around. The very helpful gal at the counter pointed out the extensive selection of seed and yes they had a no mess 20 pound blend with a wide verity of seed in it. But how much is it? It is only $33, that's it. We will definitely be back and highly recommend stopping in. read more

I have been here twice and received great service both times. Most the of the feed stores have limited information online. You don't really know what they sell until you make a visit. This store has a lot of bulk bins for bird needs, such as chicken starter, scratch, meal worms, different seeds. I also saw some things for rabbits in the bulk bin area. It is a good way to try things or take care of your pets without buying everything in large packages. For example, if you are going to make a rare trip to chickadee ridge and need some bird seeds, you can use the bulk bin to get the amount you need for the hike. They have black oil sunflower seed in the bin too. This store carries organic chicken feed and also in a corn free soy free formula. They also sell poultry bedding which I didnt notice at another store. It contains de and zeolite already mixed in there. They sell stuff for horses and dogs too. read more

Came in over the weekend to purchase some chickens. Sierra Feed was the only place in town that had chickens this time of year (other places told us it was out of season?). Only downside.... the place didn't really seem to know a lot about chickens and what was needed to raise them. Other than a gap in knowledge the service was really good and the employees were friendly. Not a store I typically frequent, but if I need anything going forward I'd definitely come back. After 18+ years of patronage, my order of grass hay was full of black mold, dirt and mud, causing the weight to be almost doubled. That would have been seen when loaded in bright daylight. I called to complain, only when I saw it was many more than a few flakes that were unusable. After waiting for a call back most of the day, I went in to explain again, the problem. I'm still waiting, a week later for ANY response. The hay has lost quality the past year. The customer service is nothing but lies. Very insulting! read more

A timeless feed store with a lot of charm. This place is the real deal; I like their dry goods that you can scoop by the pound.

I've worked with the owner Cliff for many years to get the very best feed and tack for my animals. While I can see there has been a slight dip in the customer service recently, knowing the owner and his willingness to work with me on anything I need still gets me service second to none in the area. The feed is competitively priced and I only get the best for my animals. It's also one a stop shop for everything you need. Hay, seed, grain, feed, collars, bridles, ropes, tools, everything. If they don't have it, they'll track it down for you. They take care of their hay, and always have the best quality stuff. I can appreciate the work that must go into maintaining this place. As it isn't always spotless, they're always working to keep it as tidy as a feed store can be. If you get a chance to swing in they'll give the local feel to a place that can provide almost anything you will find at PetsMart. Highly recommend. I suggest a second trip if you've had poor service too. If Ken is working, it's second to none. read more

Shame on me I should have read the Yelp reviews before engaging with this place but lesson learned. Called on a Tuesday to see if they had any galvanized watering troughs. They said they had one four footer and one six footer. Quoted a price of $110 and $143 respectively. Called Wednesday and asked them to put my name on both and I would pick up the next day (Thursday). Showed up Thursday to pick them up and they asked if I was Curtis. So far so good. When the girl writes up the order I notice she is writing $161 and another number over $200. She then informs me the total is over $400 (I think it was something like $432. I was so shocked I did not really pay that much attention to the number after that). I tell her she quoted me $110 and $143 (which is actually in line with what I have seen them for on other websites for local places). At this point a lady who seems to be a manager of sorts walks over and says that they have had two price increases in the past two weeks. I say yeah, but in the past two days? To which she responds that I was probably quoted the wrong price. I point out that this is way more than other places seem to be charging and she informs me and I quote "Well, you don't have to take them". Duh, why would I? Do I have stupid written on my forehead? I told her yes I knew that but wish I had not driven all the way from Spanish Springs for this. No apology, no attempt to work out a fair price. Just too bad see ya. I got in the truck and pulled up the Yelp reviews and they sure shed a lot of light on this. I wanted to support a local business. Not sure how they stay in business to be honest. It is with a heavy heart I write this review. I have been going to Sierra Feed for all my dog needs for many years now, monthly. Prior to that I had brought my mom and pop to the store for their dog needs as well. I've dealt with an older gentleman here and he was extremely kind, even had the boys help me carry out to the car. The two younger girls about my age, maybe younger, are always very kind to me. Today however, was two older women, one in particular the eldest, (short brunette hair). Man I have never felt so profiled or unwelcome in my life. Now I am no country boy or ranch hand, and I definitely can't say I look the part. But I am a long time customer. I came in with my roomate, and immediately see a huge pen full of baby birds, ducklings, and turkeys. This is not something you see often! As an animal lover I went and checked it out. Wasn't reaching down or trying to touch them, just peaking in at the little guys. The lady immediately had that tone like can i help you with the birds. I responded no thank you just back for the usual dog food. This is when the whole visit got awkward. As I walked over to the dog food I felt her eyes burning a hole in my back. She wouldn't take her eyes off us. (in an obvious way). I worked retail for 7 years of my life... Ma'am I work hard and I am not a punk who entered a feedery to attempt to steal a bag of dog food. There was another woman that was leaving the store at this time. Now, ladies out there, I am a gentleman raised right by my mother. I will hold a door for you, I will carry things for you, I will do a lot without you asking. But with my back turned to you 15 feet away, while I'm getting dog food, if you are at the door I am sorry in advance I couldn't get that for you. The woman working again in a condescending tone yells out to us, would either one of you gentleman like to get that door for the woman? (at this point the lady was already out the door) and as I look, the lady working goes yeah that one. I mean she made us feel like shit, and I absolutely love the opportunity to make a woman smile and do nice things for them, but I didn't know she was there. Finally, as I am ringing up, my roomate standing behind me texting on his cell.. The woman burning holes in him. Looks at me and asks is he with you?... In kind of a grump tone... All in all, way to make me feel welcome. The thousands of dollars I have spent here, I hope you spent it well cause I know I am no longer welcome here. I don't know what your deal is or your deal is with people, but try treating someone as you would want to be treated and I am sure you're world would blossum with new faces, friends, and customers. Funny thing is, my roomate was the first to say in the car, wow way to make us feel welcome. So we were both feeling your vibe. We had a good chuckle over it. read more

I really need a new helmet and can not get into The Saddlery. Sometimes it opens at 10 sometimes noon. There's no rhyme or reason to the hours and no way to really find them. The workers call in sick or go on vacation so they don't open. It was so much better when it was the English Shop. read more

I don't usually take the time to write reviews (good or bad) but now more than ever i think it is important for local businesses to get feed back on how they are conducting business. With so much competition from Ecommerce and other Brick and Mortar shops good customer service relations seem to be paramount. That being said, my experience at Sierra Feed in the past has been adequate but then again i usually just stop by buy a couple bags of dog food every month and i'm on my way. We recently started raising chickens and have been buying feed and bedding etc. I purchased an Electrolyte supplement product yesterday for $10. The product was basically "junk food" for chickens(it's colored with blue dye so that it looks more like Gatorade a suppose?!). I didn't realize this until after it was mixed, but hey, they're just chickens right? Well the chickens, one by one took a drink and IMMEDIATELY shook their heads and RAN to the other side of the brooder box! I explained this to the four employees working in the feed store with mixed reactions none of them had much to say about it other than that they "didn't know much about chickens". When i asked for a refund i was told there was no chance because i had opened it. I don't think i was out of line asking for a refund and it really bothered me that they weren't more knowledgeable about the products on their shelves or the animals that the products are for. A simple and helpful $10 store credit could have kept this customer coming back every month to buy $100+ in food and supplies. I will not be returning to this store ever again. As convenient as it is, being a few miles from home, i'd rather drive further to find a better selection with a more helpful staff. read more

I had to stop going there because most of the staff seemed annoyed by having to help the customers in the store. And also the morbidly obese cat that can barely walk, and has labored breathing. It turns my stomach to see this cat suffer day in and day out. You should be a little more polite if you want customers to return, and I will never return, better to order online or drive to Carson. Very very good selection of quality English apparel at all price points. Can't rate the feed portion of the business, but the selection of grooming type products & supplements was just ok. Staff working the register was friendly but one interaction with a female manager was quite rude from a customer service standpoint. Prices on the apparel are higher than what you'd pay online. Which with a better customer service experience I wouldn't mind as much, but I feel like if I want impersonal service and no questions returns, I'll go ahead and buy online vs dealing with an unpleasant manager, difficult return process and higher prices. read more

Once upon a time, southwest Reno was full of small ranches with lots of horses & cattle. Sierra Feed has served Reno since that time decades ago. Now, developments have shoved out most of the horses & cattle & Sierra Feed is still here. We've bought feed, tack & supplies from this store since we moved here in 1987. I can't remember a time when we've EVER had bad service in either store. There's NO WHERE else in Reno that sells such a variety of English tack. So, be GREATFUL Sierra Feed is still here & hasn't been replaced with some box store. Shop local whenever you can. BTW, their hay is always FIRST RATE! read more

Absolutely best prices on high-end dog and cat food - about 20% lower than any of the other stores. I always buy my Evo cat and dog food and occasionally special order Nature's Variety Instinct in Rabbit for my cat and Primal raw beef patties for my dog. They have typical feed store items, and their hay is usually pretty decent - especially the orchard grass. They are also close to my parent's house, so they get that 5th star for convenience haha. read more

I've been going here for years for livestock feed and supplies. Currently, we have chickens - Sierra Feed & Saddlery supplies all of the various feeds that we use. And we can get special items, such as a waterer heater for the winter. The staff is helpful, friendly, and they have a person carry heavy items out to your car. read more

Love this place! They are way more reasonable for quality cat food and cat litter than any other place in Reno! They gave me tons of free samples of cat food when I adopted my two kitties so I could transition them.The price for their Wellness canned cat food and Swheat Scoop is unbeatable even compared to online retailers. I have been a client of Sierra Feed since May, 1980, a period of over 30 years. During this time, I have become very well acquainted with the owner, Ken Cliff, and many of his staff. I have never been disappointed with the service, knowledge, or willingness to satisfy my specific wishes regarding special orders, etc. I have been well satisfied with the quality of all the products I have purchased over the 30 years for all species of animals I have had in that time. As for Garfield, the store mascot - she is now over 20 years old. If she wasn't well cared for she would not have lasted all these years. I am in there on a weekly basis, and she has always greated me with a purr and a request for a rub. Suffering cats do not great people with friendly attention, purring and playful antics, as this cat does. read more

It appears others haven't had the best luck here but I've had good experiences with Sierra Feed and Saddlery. The employees are friendly and make an effort to know me and what I tend to order. The owner is also super nice and is a huge supporter of our local CDS chapter. At one point I ordered generic rice bran and they were out of it so he substituted the stabilized instead which is at least 4x the cost. Great store I love the owner great man. The guys in the back are fast when they are not Swamped. The girls inside the feed store are pretty good depending on the day haha except for the Big girl named Sam she is so rude and bossy I can't stand her. I honestly call and see if she is working the day I need something. I would rather have the nice Delivery drivers deliver it. The old cowboy one and the younger one are always nice they never complain about stacking the hay in my small hay room even I can say it sucks to fill my hay room. they even open my bags and fill the cans. The first time I visited this store no one seemed to bother speaking to me at all although I was the only one there shopping around. I ended up finding what I needed so I continued coming back. They're close to a relative's house so it was extremely convenient for me to go and I felt like a loyal customer. THAT BEING SAID, when I went there a couple months ago, (for the absolute last time), and I asked for an item they said they could order for me, (by the way they never ordered it) the three individuals at the cash register were very rude and condescending. I then asked if they carried two more items at which point they basically scoffed and laughed at me. Instead of being rude back, which I should've done, I kindly thanked them anyway and left without a huff. They clearly don't know how to treat their customers and having read similar reviews of this establishment, I'm surprised they're still in business. I now go to foothill feed off of Geiger grade, it's such a better business, I recommend them over this dump. read more

WATCH OUT FOR EXPIRED VACCINES! Having been burned there before, I routinely take reading glasses to check expiration dates when I buy feline vaccine at Sierra Feed. One month past the date might be understandable if they're slow purging old stock, but on Feb 4, 2012, I picked one out of a tray of several vaccines that had EXPIRED EIGHT MONTHS EARLIER (June 4, 2011). That made me jokingly question the pizza that was in the same refrigerator, but I was assured it had been made that same day. Apparently they can keep track of things in there if it's food they'll eat, but not what they're selling to put into your animals. read more

It's 50/50 that you will come home with moldy feed if you buy it here..I brought home a bag of Omolene 300 only to find it completely moldy when I opened it. They did replace it but I don't live in Reno proper so it's a drive..plus huffing it out to barn (twice) wasn't convenient. The next week I stopped in for another bag only to find it had increased in price..when I pointed out it was $26.00 last week..when did it go up to $28.00?? "Today!" Was the answer..It's $21.00 at CalRanch but Sierra Feed is closer..so you can image how pissed I was to find THIS bag also moldy!!!!!! I went in and asked to be reimbursed instead of having the bag replaced! And Sierra Feed is the only place I have to tell them when buying straw that I BED MY STALLS WITH STRAW..I HAVE TO HAVE IT DRY, CLEAN AND...NOT MOLDY!!! Is it necessary to beg for dry, clean not moldy straw!!! I won't go there anymore!!! I had already stopped buying my hay there years ago!! If you do..check your feed!!! Sometimes the mold is not right on top!!!!! It's not worth a vet bill (or worse) to go to a more convenient location!!!! And if moldy feed isn't a problem enough..it's served up by rude, uninterested, uninformed employees. I would think this type of business would hire people who know something about horses!! And a little knowledge of what feed they carry!!! read more

WOW... We first stopped into the feed side of the store...... I wish I had time at work to flirt with the other employees as much as the girl behind the counter was.... and yes you could bet this meant there was a huge lack in service!!!! We wouldn't recomoned going back!!! Now on to the Saddle and tack side of things.... you would hope for atleast 1/2 of a buisness to be well staffed or knowledgable... nope wrong again... we were browsing through the tack and after a few minutes the lady behind the counter ask if she could help ( as if she had a clue...)..... we did find a few good prices on selective tack... but it was on consignment .... while we were shopping there was another lady come in looking for something for her daughter... who lives back east someplace, they were on the phone with her and buy name she had no idea what the girl wanted... so she got on the phone and she discribed it.... nope she still had no clue....WTF... Why would you have some one run you shop that has 0% of a clue what she is selling!!!! Oh well we won't be back!!! read more
