My experience with Sierra Home Alternatives began in 1997, when I bought a pellet stove, which SHA also arranged to have installed. At first, I used the recommended service person for cleaning and a couple of minor repairs, but after observing for awhile, began to take over these duties myself. Over the past few years, as the pellet stove components began to age and fail of old age, SHA has helped immensely in talking me through replacement of all major components of this appliance, taking wrench-in-hand phone calls and in-person visits without any hint of exasperation and indeed showing only pleasure in helping. At this point I expect this stove to hit the 30 year operation mark, even if I don't make it myself! Not many businesses are like this one these days. If you aren't knowledgeable about pellet stoves and need these people's advice, don't go there! When we walked in we trusted their expertise to recommend a really good stove because we knew nothing about it. We felt we were dealing with car salesmen! They had just started selling this new brand of stove and that's the one they sold us (probably not knowing much about it since it had just gotten on the market!) But they talked us into it by telling us how dependable it had been and kept going on and on about it's performance. It was one of the most expensive in their store but we thought, since they told us how reliable it was, that it would be worth it in the long run. The second winter we used it there were already all kinds of problems. The burn pot had to be replaced after just using it one winter. You have to lift the glass door in order to close it and the seal all around the glass is so poor that after a day of using it everything needs to be dusted from the black film of soot it leaves everywhere. Anyone looking for a pellet stove, don't go there! The 1 star is because I don't seem to be able to post this review without giving it a least one star! read more

I called on the morning of Friday the 10th of October to get someone to come out to look at the flue on my pellet stove. I was told that the person that does the scheduling is "in a meeting" and would have to call me back. I left my name and cell phone number as requested. Towards the end of the day on Friday I called again, as I had not gotten a return call as of this point, and was told that the person that does the scheduling was backed up and trying to return all calls by the end of the day. The gentleman took my first name and I expressed my displeasure at having to wait for a call back just to get an appointment and he said that's how they make sure that everyone is taken care of when they are this busy. Fast forward to today 10/15 and I still have not gotten a call! They have lost my business! read more

She had been cold most of the winter since she couldn't decide what kind of stove to buy, but was finally able to find something she liked from your store. I called after hours on Friday and left a message and phone number requesting return call for chimney sweep service. Called again on Saturday morning, they hadn't called me back, and again explained what I needed. I was told person responsible for appointments was on the phone and I again left my number so they could call me back. Business must be really good in the area since they never called back so I assume they have all the business they need. If you walk in to buy a new wood burning stove, as we did in 2010, they're happy to sell you one but then I guess you're on your own. read more

We moved into our home last summer and love living in the foothills. We purchased a 17 year old home with three fireplaces. Two of them have wimpy gas firelog setups with a ceramic log set. They look pretty, but produce very little heat from the natural gas. Having had a sealed natural gas insert in our last home, we looked around the area to find an insert for our family room. Using Yelp, we found Sierra Home Alternatives in Placerville and visited there. We were impressed by a number of factors: - The place is immaculate - cleaner than several other stores we visitied. - No push - the people we met with were more interested in what we were trying to do than just selling us whatever they had in stock. They were knowledgeable about their products and were intent on us being happy with both the heat output and the aesthetics of how it would appear in our room. - Selection - they have several brands to choose from and they explained the features of each to us. - Price - we had a budget and they worked with us to ensure we got a quality insert within that budget. - Installer - they don't do their own installations, but set us up with Brian Walters who did a fantastic job. He came to our home, measured everything, then came when we ordered our insert and made the gas and electrical connections and installed the new fireplace. It looks great and does a fine job warming up our family room and kitchen. We are very pleased. read more

We eliminated one right away due to the lack of emphasis on stoves, and then had to decide btw the last two. In the end, we went with Sierra Home Alternatives b/c each time I contacted them by phone or in the shop, they could answer our questions re: design, stove suitability, and whether a particular stove would fit in our unusual fireplace. They came out for the estimate, then again to make sure that what we wanted to do to prep the area for the stove was feasible and to check the electrical connections that would need to be done. This place is FABULOUS!!! We have been terribly disapointed with the fireplace dealers in SLT. When we walked in here we knew we were in good hands. They are extremely knowledgable, helpful and not at all pushy! You want to see pushy try the stores in SLT! They found parts we needed in one hour that we had been waiting two weeks for someone to find us at The Lake. We had three fireplaces replaced in a house we bought and they gave us great attention and made everything easy. These guys are great! read more

I was looking for a wood burning stove one year ago. All these folks went the extra mile working with me. I'd found a new Vermont Castings stove from an online dealership nearly half the price. After comparing them to a Jotul, I decided on purchasing the Jotul through Sierra. They worked with me, worked hard for my business and that was a big deciding factor. Before a year was up the Jotul F500 started flaking the enamel finish on one panel. They were awesome to help me get it replaced with my warranty. They contacted me every few days to update me. They finally sent a great team of guys to replace my stove. I was very impressed with their knowledge and professional expertise. This place is amazing. Great customer service and very knowledgeable people. My husband and I went in with our kids with a broken piece of glass for our wood stove. They estimated a time they would be able to have the glass ready for us which was 2 to 3 days at the time. They had the same wood stove we have in our home on display. My husband asked if they were willing to just take the glass out of the stove from the floor model, they discussed it for about 2 minutes and came back to us and said that they would be willing to do that for us so we could get our wood stove fixed. Not a terrible experience but I have to agree with the other reviewer about them trying to sell me the most expensive stove in the place even though it wasn't the best unit for my needs. I scheduled an appointment for today, Feb.3, 2015, to have get an estimate to install a gas fireplace insert. They were supposed to be here between 2 and 4pm. At 4:10pm no one had come or called so I called the shop. The women told me the estimator must be stuck on a previous job and she tried to call him while I was on hold. She could not reach him and rather than me waiting on hold said she would call me back and let me know when he would be here. About an hour later no one had called me back so I called the shop and cancelled the appointment. I have no idea if they do good work, but if they cannot at least keep an appointment or call me then I have no interest in having them do work in my home. read more

Our solar tube and pellet stove both came from Sierra Home Alternatives. We love the light that the solar tube brings into the dining room. We have had the pellet stove three years and the savings on the PG&E bill is significant! We wish we had purchased it sooner! We woke up to a cold house Thursday morning. My husband got out the owner's manual and tried trouble shooting. No luck. A call to S.H.A. and Josh listened to the way the pellet stove had performed the night before, what my husband had tried, then gave him step by step instructions of what should solve the problem. A flashlight, a screwdriver, and an out-of-sight reset button and we had heat again! No service call, no charge, and Josh called that evening to see if the stove was working. I purchased a pellet stove from them. Their recommended installer did a great job! However, I did have issues with the pellet stove. A couple big issues, it was on thermastat and was situated too close to it so the heat sensor was messed up. I ended up using a hand held remote from a distance to cure that problem. Then, I learned you must use "great" pellets, not cheap ones in order for it to not clog up! Now I buy Bear Mountain, not cheaper pellets. They burn nice and hot and my stove stays a little cleaner, longer. And lastly, I had to learn how to operate and clean it correctly. It takes some time to learn, and then you must continue to clean it. Sierra Home Alternatives was patient with me and the service man went above and beyond to explain things. I will recommend them and I continue to use them for annual service cleaning. read more
