Service was perfect and I really appreciated how attentive the staff was. We had the pre-fix lunch which did not disappoint ..portions are generous and full of flavors. Probably the best baba ganoush I've ever had !! Only thing I'd warn about is the dress code- there isn't one. There were people in robes and people who were dressed nice. One of the worst service experiences I have had to endure- from the militant hostess who thinks saying "wait here" gives her more credibility to the super chatty bartender who talked himself out of a big bar tab (we didn't get to order our drinks because the militant hostess told us we had to get to our table after the bartender talked at us fo about 10 minutes), to the mumbling server who we couldn't hear over the loud acoustics, to the bus boys asking us if we were done with our dish every five minutes. Literally felt like we were eating at a diner if it wasn't for the snobby attitude of the hostess. The food was decent. Some temperature on the dishes didn't come out that great (a little on the cold side) probably why the bus boys kept asking to clear our plates when we were trying to have conversations as well as enjoy our pricey meal!!! Overall would I come back? Maybe for lunch but definitely not for dinner... way too pricey for the service. Which is unfortunate because the chef did do a good job at thoughtfully preparing a great meal. After our $600 dinner and our $200 bottle of wine , I would've liked to think that the meal was extraordinary but maybe like most things in Big Sur nowadays it's just average... (thanks tech bros). We would've enjoyed the ambiance a little more had we also not been rushed to get to our table, as we tried to sit on the balcony for a drink, but like I said that militant hostess was not having it. We had reservations for lunch, but spontaneously snagged dinner reservations the night before as well, so we were able to try both meals. IMO, lunch was much more delicious and really pretty as well, mostly veggie- based and on the lighter side. $75 prix fixe. Hotel guests seem to have access to an a la carte menu. Dinner is a $145 prix fixe, but I found it to be on the saltier side (the cavatelli and sole were extremely salty!). The dessert and bread for dinner were my favorites. Go during the day or right before sunset for great picture opportunities and amazing views! Self parking is available so you don't have to valet if you don't want to +1 star for the views and service, I wouldn't recommend coming back for the price. read more

This pains me to write such a sad review for such an acclaimed restaurant but unfortunately I had to be fair. Did I have a bad dining experience? No. But given all the hype and high expectations for this spot, it did not meet the cut. Sierra Mar at the Post Ranch Inn has one of the best views in the world - hands down. The staff are friendly and professional, shout-out to the Somm who did an excellent job with the wines. Their dinner menu consists of a 4 course pre-fixe menu at $145 per person. One of the biggest disappointments of my experience was how poorly timed the courses arrived. As soon as we sat down and ordered, the amuse-bouche came. What seemed like 15 seconds in, before even finishing the amuse-Bouche, the first course was plopped in front of us with some garbling from the wait staff explaining what it was. Ok, so down the hatchet with the amuse-bouche so we could get started on the very impressive first course. This first course was probably the best out of the 4. Next came the bread and the 2nd course. Slight critique of the 2nd course of the vegetable medley: it's a VEGETABLE medley but really came out as "oops we're out of veggies so let's just dump a ton of barley pilaf in there". Thankfully, I'm a big fan of carbs so this was quite welcomed. Good way to soak up the alcohol. The main courses we ordered were good enough, expected but nothing special - although I don't know how they get away with charring half a bak choy and slaughtering it with sauce. Dessert was hit or miss. In this case, the Panna Cotta was a complete miss. Overcooked and sponge-like. At this point of our meal, we had also witnessed other tables expressing their disdain for some of their meals. Unfortunately, I had tried my best to not heed the advice of past diners at this establishment, but must concede and agree with majority of the judgements cast. Sierra Mar gets 5 stars for best dining views in the world for dining but gets an underwhelming 3 for the actual food. I kept questioning if there was to be another service after our seating and why I felt so rushed throughout the entirety of the meal. Maybe the staff wanted to go home? My wife and I had dinner here back on October 21. The location is obviously special with its amazing views - but mother nature did serve up thick fog for that night . The architecture/ layout of the restaurant is warm and welcoming. The hostess and our waiter were fabulous. In fact, the valets were also so nice , and shared some history of the ranch regarding some of the photos and artifacts downstairs. We spent three nights at the Post Ranch Inn and ate several great meals at Sierra Mar. It was a gorgeous place, built into a cliff overlooking the ocean, with astonishing views from every glass wall. The service and food were outstanding, especially at dinner--we celebrated my husband Matt B.'s 40th birthday here, and it was just wonderful. Sierra Mar does double duty as a pleasant, casual hotel breakfast spot and a fancy special occasion restaurant. Service at breakfast is attentive but low-key, while you get the fine dining treatment at dinner. The wait staff is friendly and professional, and includes a sommelier, who helped us considerably. We took full advantage of our daily breakfast, available to hotel guests between 7:30 and 10:30. It always felt relaxing and comfortable, and the food and drink were great. Everything but alcohol was included, and I enjoyed both the fresh pressed orange and cold pressed apple juices while my husband had his coffee. I also went for a Bloody Mary one morning, and it was pretty satisfying, garnished with crunchy cornichons. The food was good, too, simple California breakfast fare, well prepared. I liked the California omelet, with grilled squash, piperade, mushrooms, spinach, onion, Monterey Jack, and avocado, with a side of toast (I went with the rye). The breakfast sandwich was solid, with scrambled egg, turkey bacon, spinach, and cheddar on an English muffin, served with dijonnaise. One morning, I wanted a lighter breakfast and was torn between the yogurt and overnight oats, so our server brought me a half portion of each. The organic yogurt came with strawberries, blueberries, and housemade granola, the oats with golden raisins, hemp seeds, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, and coconut. Matt had the buttermilk pancakes every day, with Straus Farms ricotta, Meyer lemon, poppy, and maple syrup, as well as little croissants from the chef's daily bakery selection, which came with house jams and fruit. We spent a couple afternoons hanging out at the Jade Pool, and we ordered drinks both times and once, a light lunch, utilizing the poolside phone to call the restaurant. Service was quite slow, which is something to keep in mind if you're lounging hungry, but everything was good. I liked the Big Sur ceviche, which came with fresh fish (I don't think I asked what kind), avocado crema, cucumber, tomato, red onion, lime, radish, and crispy tortilla rounds. Matt got a margherita pizza, which was fine. The cocktails were great. My favorite was the Pink Peppercorn Paloma, an excellent vacation drink, with tequila blanco, lime, pink peppercorn syrup, and grapefruit. The Mountain Nights was another winner, with barrel-aged rum, banana liqueur, cold brew, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters. On the whiskey side, I liked the Ridgeline, with rye, bourbon, cognac, brandy, demerara, Angostura bitters, and xocolatl mole bitters. We started our dinner with a round of these cocktails, but switched to wine once our food started coming, with guidance from the sommelier. We got a half bottle of the 2020 Bisci Verdicchio di Matelica, a nice white, then a bottle of the 2019 Racines Sta. Rita Hills Cuvée Pinot Noir. The food was superb. Sierra Mar offers a nightly multi-course family-style prix fixe menu. It seems to rotate regularly, so you can eat there every night of your stay without repeating the sam meal. I would actually do this in the future, as everything was delicious (and much better than the food at Sur House, where we went one night for variety). First, there was a lovely little amuse bouche of potato espuma with trout roe and chives. Then a few tasty snacks: yellowfin tuna tartare with puffed rice, ponzu, avocado purée, and togarashi; Belgian endive with ricotta, toasted walnuts, pickled kumquats, and Meyer lemon; and an onion velouté soup with pickled pearl onions and chives. Next, a plate of nutty, hand-shaped house bread with cultured butter and California Arbequina olive oil. Then, we had seafood and meat, a course of dayboat scallop and Ora king salmon followed by Niman Ranch lamb rack and a side of soy-braised marble potatoes. The scallops were silky and firm with a nice sear, finished with XO sauce, chrysanthemum, and miso turnips. The salmon was served with braised celery root, brown butter crumble, and chicken jus. The lamb was spectacular, a standout in a terrific dinner. It was rare and juicy and rich with flavor, served with asparagus, green garlic, and lentil purée. The potatoes were a treat, too, with gochujang aioli and garden nasturtium. A refreshing shot of winter citrus soda led into dessert, a plate of Black Twig apple gateau with Valrhona chocolate mousse, roasted hazelnuts, and Calvados ice cream. Finally, a small dish with blueberry financiers and a square of raspberry pâte de fruit holding a lit candle for Matt's birthday. Sierra Mar is a special place, and I look forward to coming back next time we have an excuse to visit the Post Ranch Inn. read more

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Sierra Mar in Big Sur, California. The restaurant is on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and the views are breathtaking. The prix fixe menu highlights the local agriculture, and I was able to try many different flavors and produce that I would have not tried on an everyday basis. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and they were very understanding of my shellfish allergy. Here are some specific details about my experience: Appetizers: The charred avocado appetizer was a great way to start the meal. The avocado was perfectly ripe and the charred skin added a nice touch of smokiness. The yellowfin tuna tartare was also delicious. The tuna was fresh and the flavors were well-balanced. The coconut curry soup was a bit of a surprise. I was expecting a thick and creamy soup, but it was quite light and refreshing. The flavors were very Malaysian-inspired, and I enjoyed it. The duck breast with glazed apricots and almonds was the star of the show. The duck was cooked to perfection and the glaze was sweet and tangy. The apricots and almonds added a nice touch of sweetness and crunch. Dessert: The dessert was like a little piece of chocolate heaven. The cardamom cream added a perfect balance to the chocolate Opera Gateau. Overall, I had a wonderful dining experience at Sierra Mar. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was stunning. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience. Keep in mind, the menu is always changing due to what is available locally. Kind of a let down. Last time I was here Chef Elizabeth Murray was EC and the menu was a lot more thoughtful. Everything tasted good, but was boring. We started with oysters which had a pretty standard mignonette that was tasty and they were fresh. The bread course was pita bread with an assortment of hummus, cashew cream, some eggplant puree, with jardiniere that were kind of sad and dried out. These plates were sitting assembled in the window when we arrived, when we got it it was all room temp (I'm assuming because of the multiple elements they take too long to make to order, but it was not a good look) The salad course was a family style garden salad with ranch, like a huge huge salad for two people, the ranch was good but not creative at all. I ordered fish, which was salmon, again not very creative, and my husband got the flat iron steak which had a very large chewy tendon running through the meat. The sides of creamed spinach and market vegetables was delicious but again boring. Everything was good, cocktails were fine, and the sommelier recommended a Chablis with the fish which was good. I was disappointed to not find a single local mushroom, even though there are chanterelles and porcinis on the peninsula already, and we are coming into foraging season. Again everything was just okay. Service was very very good, the food runner explained every item and the table was quickly reset for each course, and we even got a sweet 'Happy Anniversary' on our menu which was a nice touch. We are staying at the Post Ranch to celebrate our anniversary and this place is special, as is the quality of the food and service in the restaurant. The views are to die for and the food has range from simple and fresh to mildly but not wildly complex. Maybe the best oyster I have ever eaten was served here during our 4 course price fix dinner. A raw oyster with a coconut infused foam and a tiny jalepeno pepper. Super fresh (from Washington State) and super creative preparation. Second course winner was the cavatelli with spring pea. Again - very creative, and tasty. My abalone was very good on the "haven't had this in a while" but just OK on the "would you order again" scale. The lamb main was good but the saddle was a little tough for my taste. A creative use of the sprouted lentils added a solid texture and taste with the sauce. My wife doesn't usually order chicken but she leaned into it this time and was rewarded. The dessert put us over the top. Very healthy serving size. The polmagranite/white chocolate dipped cheese cake was stunning and sweet. My hot brownie soufflé was more than shared and worth a repeat trip if offered as special again. I found the wine list to be unique with a good blend of Cali and French wines from many regions. The pricing was reasonable. They are open to the public for lunch and it is worth the trip up to the top of the hill if you are in the neighborhood. All the servings were a good size and we left very full. read more

Ambiance was great. Hostess was sweet and everyone was kind. Our server missed the mark though. Listening to another female server fully explaining to her table the menu and giving recommendations, we felt like we missed out with our server who didn't explain anything on the menu unless we asked and even then didn't really seem to know what some things were. The oysters were the only standout thing on the menu. The pappardelle was so thick, chewy and stuck together. The puttanesca was a creamy puréed sauce and not at all traditional which is fine I guess if that was explained. The castlevetrano olives weren't their normal buttery flavor from imported castlevetranos but a little more tart. The guinea hen, while cooked okay, was lackluster. The tomatillos were yummy but the "salsa verde" was just a pasty puree smear on the bottom of the plate. The pork chop/belly was good and balanced but wish we would have had a better description of the "young" kimchi. We love kimchi and this paled in comparison to true kimchi. The "crispy skin" on the pork belly was unfortunately so poorly done that it was reminiscent of a rawhide chew toy. We liked the housemade ice cream trio but again we weren't explained that the chocolate had any chile heat to it. When asked what the flavors were, we were told chocolate, vanilla and mixed berry with no other description. Thankfully the dish was more than our server described but with that high quality of ice cream it would have been cool to see it plated in a way that showcased how wonderful it was, rather than thrown in a bowl all together. Overall we left pretty disappointed and probably won't return. We've heard great things but it just missed the quality and care we had hoped for at a place with this level of supposed caliber. read more

Sounds so plain but it was excellent. That's how you know the chef is really good. They can make vegetables your favorite dish! They have little balconies near tables where you can peak out to enjoy the view. What a cherry on top. Disappointing vegan experience. The service was fabulous and the location was beautiful but the food was sadly lacking. The best way I could describe it is a carnivore chef is showcasing vegetables the way they would a steak. Given the cost, I expected something better. For example, a huge hunk of tofu with some curried lentils just doesn't cut it. I suggest they bring in a vegan chef to consult and design a vegan menu. I was so disappointed dining here. From the greeting gate to the valet there seemed to be some segregation between people who were staying there and those visiting the restaurant. These areas are off limits to non guests etc. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful. Beautiful views! The only menu offered was a tasting menu at $185 per person. That's fine. I always enjoy new things. Then I noticed the people next to us receiving other regular menus that were not the tasting one. When we inquired, they said regular menus are only available for registered guests. So now I feel trapped into the tasting menu which was ok. I was expecting some amazing treats. I received the entire opposite. Raw lamb, old stinky seafood, absolutely not fresh. Two of my samples I had to spit out. I have a sophisticated palate, so I know good from bad. I spent $600 for food I couldn't eat. I informed the server the lamb was raw and received no response. They just took our full plates away with no concern. Desserts lacked flavor. I left with the taste of old sea bass in my mouth. It tasted like canned tuna left out for a couple days. read more

Decided to come here for dinner to celebrate getting married in the morning in Big Sur. For being such an upscale restaurant, with amazing view and food, the service was mediocre. After just getting married, we wanted to feel special but it just felt like a normal dinner. I would definitely come again, just not for a special occasion. Food review: Don't get me wrong, the food is outstanding. They had a set 4 course menu. Portion sizes are small (normal for a high end restaurant). And presentation is beautiful. I had a beet salad, chai curry soup (with a minor issue, there was a tiny caterpillar in my soup, but they immediately brought me a new soup, no apology though for the incident), bass with cauliflower and a pomegranate cheesecake. So disappointed. We had a reservation for our last night in Big Sur, celebrating an anniversary. We pulled up to the gate at Post Ranch and the attendant asked us if we received a text cancelling our reservation? Clearly we didn't, otherwise we wouldn't be here. There was a bit of a language barrier but it sounded like the restaurant was closed due to a Covid outbreak. She also recommended Nepenthe, but we'd already eaten there for lunch that day. It was 7:45pm. As we drove away, I called just to make sure I understood correctly. The person on the phone sounded apologetic and confirmed there was a Covid outbreak with the restaurant staff. I recognize and appreciate the urgency and safety measures taken, I just wish an additional measure was taken to ensure all parties were notified of the cancellation. As a result, we ended up overdressed at the local taphouse (which by the way, has excellent beers and sandwiches). I read other reviews about cancelling last minute... I really hope Sierra Mar reconsiders how they handle these situations. read more

Very cool and very pretty. It's like the sky and the ocean blends together. Tasting menu is $125 per person. A few choices you can choose from, which is awesome. My 2nd visit was on Friday, May 3rd. I do wish we'd arrived earlier to explore the place more, as we were right on time. The food was mostly delightful, though the gazpacho wasn't to our taste. Set atop a cliff in beautiful Big Sur, the restaurant surprisingly does not give off a pretentious air, even though it is defiantly a high end restaurant. The service is excellent, the views spectacular and the food does not disappoint. Their homemade bread was great, but their homemade salted butter was absolutely the best butter I've ever had in my life. The butternut squash was delicious and encapsulated the taste of a fresh spring day. The Kobe burger was good but huge, so I had to save half. I might have changed the bread from the rye they had as a the fresh bread, but it was still good. I had a delicious blackberry whiskey cocktail to start which I recommend as well. The third course, serve with a glass of fresh, cold milk was my favorite. A date cake with Guinness ice cream. With tip, this meal set me back $120, so for me, this is the kind of restaurant that I would go to as a special treat. read more

I cannot find any criticism of this place. The service, ambiance and food are all excellent. The view from the dining room is drop dead gorgeous--our beautiful coastline in all of its splendor. We had a special prix fixe menu for a group of coworkers with two appetizer choices, five mains and two desserts. The options were all attractive, and they provided a perfect wine pairing with each course. Service was very professional with prompt answers to any questions that we had on the menu. They kept the water filled and brought us plenty of their fresh baked bread, olive oil dip and butter. They staged the service of each course with several waiters coming to deliver to the table in synch. The food is splendid. The salad I had, with fresh English pea purée and edible flowers, was one of the best I've ever had. The eggplant parmigiana, a seemingly plebeian selection, was executed in a way they made the eggplant melt in your mouth. I also had tastes of the lamb burger, chicken and cod, which were equally outstanding. Dessert was also fantastic: I had a beignet in a Mexican hot cocoa sauce, and my wife had a basil cake with citrus meringue. So creative, attractive to the eye, and delicious. I highly suggest that you go here for a destination style foodie lunch. You will have a meal and an experience that you'll remember for a long time. read more

We had 2 dinners and 3 breakfasts at Sierra Mar while staying at Post Ranch Inn so we got to sample a fair bit of their offerings. You can make a reservation at Sierra Mar if you're not staying at Post Ranch Inn. Let's start with things other than food: The views are outstanding, especially if you get a table by the window. For many of these tables, there are small porches that you can step outside to feel the ocean breeze and smell the salt water. It does get cool once the sun goes down so close the door or bring a sweater. If you're not on the window, the views are mixed -- in some places you can still see well. On the downside, many of the tables are close together. It's not uncomfortable but I frequently overhead other peoples' conversations (and assume they heard ours). I prefer the tables in the back of the restaurant near the bar with decent views and more room to the tables in the middle of the restaurant with the best views but less space. The servers seem to genuinely love their jobs (and why wouldn't they?) If you want a conversation, they'll talk to you about local history; if you want to be left alone, they only show up to refresh your wine. The kitchen accommodated all of our special requests, even when we chose the prix fixe. The prix fixe is four courses (with dessert) which is $125. You can order the items a la carte. Once I even ordered two items from the first course and none of the second. I liked everything I tried. The garden egg (quail?) was outstanding. The sauce on the halibut was delicate and flavorful. The Niman Ranch meat was buttery. None of the desserts stood out to me -- except the cheese plate with nuts and honey. Sierra Mar is definitely a special occasion place. Absolutely phenomenal meal!!! 4 courses and everything was above and beyond good. I have had the privilege to eat some amazing food and this place did not disappoint. To all my millennials who will spend money when it's worth it - do it. Make sure you make a reservation ahead of time. Ours was at 6:15, we arrived a few minutes early and were promptly seated. 1. View is dope. Best I've ever seen before at a restaurant. 2. Service was impeccable. Anyone that had a bad experience was probably just being a douche and in return got a bad attitude. When we asked for a photo the server went out of his was to take us outside to show us the best spot to take a photo. Forgot his name but thank you so much for going above and beyond! 3. Food was SO amazing. Wow! Every single dish that came out was great! Even the bread with butter was great. I definitely asked for seconds on the bread - it's free so #treatyoself. 4. Keep in mind there is a fixed price of $125 for the four course meal - tip is not included. 5. They had live music (a violinist) - which we were told doesn't always happen but I'm glad it did when we were there! Definitely would come back to experience this again. read more
