We also requested a different boat, but were told that this was "the best out of their broken boats" and that it was all they had available. That information should have been disclosed before we rented the boat. We requested a refund due to receiving a boat with known issues, but were told the manager was unavailable and no one could help us. Renting out equipment with known problems without informing customers, then refusing to resolve the issue, is unacceptable. We expected a safe, fully functional boat and honest communication, but received neither.

The issue I had with Sierra Marina was with their kayak rentals. The service and the price wasn't…read morethe problem. The issue was with the kayak itself. It was well past its prime. One of the backrest clip loops was broken (kayaing without a working backrest is horrible), and the deck hatch was so old that water leaked right into the hold causing flooding. It also appears that this Marina knows about the kayak flooding because they drilled a custom drain hole in the back of the kayak for flooding drainange. These issues weren't realized until I was already on the water. Obviously basic expectations of a kayak rental weren't met. The previous day we rented from Shaver Lake Watersports and they had all new kayaks. So new that they still had the brochures attached to the kayaks. Perhaps that's why SLW cost $10 more an hour to rent.. I guess you get what you pay for. As others have said, it's teens working here on a summer job. Nothing wrong with that of course but they're not really trained to look for issues with a boat (or kayak in my case) before sending someone out in the lake. They also don't have knowledge of Shaver Lake's boating laws. The kid that launched me said that everyone was required to wear a life vest. After looking it up, the law states 12 and under must wear a life preserver. I took it off when out of Marina sight. Tip - if you're staying on the lake as a "day use" and are thinking about renting a kayak, make sure it's for half-a-day or full-day rental. It's like a 30-40 minute paddle to the beach areas around parking lot 3..

The folks working at the counter for the boat rental were friendly and helpful. I wish I could say the same thing for the dude's working at the actual boat dock. They gave us weird vibes. Like, have y'all never seen Asians renting a boat? WTF are you guys glaring at? WTF is so funny? It was irritating AF! Thankfully, the time on the water was really fun! The kids had such a good time zipping around on the water and we also rented a tube that we towed off the back of the pontoon boat. Yes, it's not a speed boat, but it was fast enough for the kids to enjoy being towed around. The next day we went back to Miller's Landing to use their public showers. Five dollars for five minutes. Make it quick! The shower's were clean, water was warm, or cold if you prefer, but the line can get long. There is no complimentary shampoo, soap, or conditioner, so be sure to BYO. It was a good option for those of us who were tent camping that NEEDED a shower. Although we didn't dine in the restaurant, we did get drinks, ice cream, and milkshake's from the café, all of which were really tasty. We will definitely plan to incorporate a boat rental, showers, and meals at Miller's Landing when we plan our annual camping trip for next year!

On the north side of the lake are three pay parking lots. All three are viable and you don't need a 4x4. We set up around lot 3 one day and had a great time. Secret place. There's a free small parking lot in front of the Lake Watersports Marina. However if you drive south less than a mile from this marina you'll see a nondescript gravel road. Drive down this road then take the first left road and you'll see a small parking lot. This lot is right above the secluded beaches. Parking here will put your car much closer to your perfect beach spot. Tips - There are a few marinas on thia lake but I would NOT recommend the Sierra Marina. Their equipment, specifically their Kayaks are old and broken down. Also, they're not located in a good Kayak spot. I'd much rather recommend Shaver Lake Watersports for Kayaking.

HWY 168 remains open, however, and there are still plenty of snow parks packed with snow along the highway once you get up to the 6000 feet elevation level. If you travel a little further northeast, about an hour's drive from Clovis, you will find Huntington Lake. Much of the lake was still frozen solid when I visited there last weekend and the temperature up there was mild with only a hint of a breeze. There was also plenty of snow along the roads and on the marina and lakebeds, which made it a perfect place to visit to see the snow, take photos of the lake and snow-capped mountains, and escape the heat. Perhaps best of all, there were not too many people who appear to visit the lake since it is mostly frozen and with Shaver Lake, China Peak Mountain Resort, and the aforementioned snow parks all still open for some fun in the snow and outdoor enjoyment. Considered one of the cleanest and most pristine lakes in the Central Valley and in the Sierras. I cannot wait to come up again in another month as the snow is melted down to fish and swim in the lake and hike on its trails. For the first time in over a decade, the water levels will be at full capacity. It is known to get a bit breezy during the summer months, which makes it ideal for sail boating. There are probably another two or three weeks to see and play in the snow. Huntington Lake is my recommended spot to go for those in Fresno County that do not want to travel too far to find a lot of it.

So we rented a boat on Bass Lake, and man, it was awesome. The crew was extremely friendly and accommodating, and the boat itself--a medium pontoon with an inner tube--was great. The shop didn't offer much in the way of actual provisions for the boat ride, unless your idea of lunch is chips, Doritos, donuts, and 75 varieties of soda. Basically, everything you need to give three children a four-hour sugar high in the middle of a lake. I would have loved some sandwiches, fruit, or anything that didn't have a cartoon mascot on the package. The price is where the missing star went. You're looking at around $500 for the boat and inner tube for four hours, and then you have to pay for the gas on top of that. Maybe that's standard practice, but it felt like a lot for four hours. For the whole day? Sure. But four hours? My bank account is still kicking me in the balls. That said, Bass Lake was unbelievably nice to swim in, and diving off the boat in the middle of that gorgeous lake was incredible for the kids. The inner tube was the undisputed highlight. We went zipping around the lake like a bunch of deranged dragonflies, and the kids absolutely crushed it. They never wanted to get off. The smiles on their faces ultimately made the price worth it, and we all wished we could have stayed out there the entire day. So why were we told, face-to-face, that they weren't renting jet skis that day? As a Black customer, it's difficult not to question whether race played a role. I can't know what motivated the employee, but being told "no" in person, then receiving the opposite answer over the phone later that same day, while also seeing non-Black customers renting jet skis, left me feeling singled out. Whether this was poor customer service, dishonesty, or something more, it left a lasting impression. I hope no one else has the same experience.

Like we spotted a bear on the way but I had an air horn and Bear Spray. I was in better shape than bro at the time so I took on some of his pack. Both of us were struggling at the end. But what a sight to see. Proof that God knew how to paint. The lake was incredibly still and crystal clear. I could see schools of what I believe were trout. So we set up chairs and I made a rock stove near the shore and 15 min later I had boiling water for coco. Bro wanted to nap. So we unrolled the air beds and bro was out in 5 minutes. I went to bed early the night before. Soon the lack of air tired me too and I got an hour as well. I woke to see bro using mosquito flies and he already caught a nice brook trout. They were small but of perfect health. We each only caught 2 so we ate them right away. After, I boiled two more pans of lake water to fill our canteens. That water tasted purified. It took us 5 hours to hike up to Lake George so we headed back to camp at 1. We were smart enough to wear hiking boots and thick socks so our feet were good. We pulled into camp around 5:30 pm. The following day we realized that we are not cut out for the wild.
