I traveled 1 1/2 hrs. to Escalon to seek out help for maintenance and questions about sealing it. The man behind the counter was really rude to me and just kept saying (about 5 times) that they were a cement contractor company and said their cement had a sealant in it and it didn't look like it was crumbling to him. He said to use a dish cleaning brush on it. REALLY!!!! He needs to do some homework and learn some manners. Won't ever be back.

It was nice and warm inside with little wagons provided for ease of browsing. They also had many arrangements in cute ceramic pots or decorative wood crates and metal sculptures. Rows upon rows of elegant poinsettias! The standard versions were a reasonable $10. The fancier arrangements were in the $30-60 range, with some of the grandest ones at $100. There is a bathroom for customers, as well as free butter cookies and hot apple cider. Be warned, they only accept cash or personal check!

Upon arrival, the main branch in the middle was broken off. I got a refund, but they would not get me another one. After searching, I found this nursery which grows Brackens Brown. I spoke with Cesar at the growing grounds. He told me to come down and they would find me what I need. Once there, Peggy and Esteban took a great care of me. Peggy picked out the best looking tree in the growing area and Esteban assisted in getting me loaded up. Everyone that I dealt with on site was friendly courteous, and answered all my questions. And let me tell you: it was an oasis. I live in North Modesto, so Hickman isn't exactly on my regular route. But yesterday, while chaperoning a field trip to a nearby pumpkin patch for my first grader, the stars aligned. Once the kids boarded the bus back to school, I googled Frantz's location -- just 12 minutes east. Destiny called, and I answered. I arrived, parked, and practically skipped into the nursery. I had to pause and absorb the beauty... which may have led to me walking into a pole. It was that stunning. Rows upon rows of loved, thriving plants. The place is humongous, reasonably priced, and clearly run by people who care. Isabelle Mejia was a delight -- knowledgeable, funny, and fluent in gardening nerd-speak. She even tied a little ribbon on the Sir Prize avocado I bought (yes, it felt like a coronation). Peggy was equally helpful, giving me the scoop on when a particular citrus variety I've been stalking will be available. I came needing nothing. I left with two avocado trees that were taller than me, 3 flats of flowers and a few other perennials. Classic chicken math, but for gardeners. Did I need them? Absolutely not. I already have 30+ avocado trees on my property. Am I addicted? Yes. But these were gorgeous -- tall, healthy, with large leaves and impressive girth (yes, I said girth). Frantz has varieties I haven't seen elsewhere, and I'll be back in spring when more become available. If you're a plant nerd, a tree hoarder, or just someone who appreciates a well-run nursery, run -- don't walk -- to Frantz Garden Center. I'm already counting the days until my next visit.
