Do you know those simple words of wisdom, "follow your nose"? Well usually it doesn't work from inside your car. But in this case, it did. Roasting coffee smells distinctive, even after driving for an hour (although it seemed like more) on an unmarked dirt/paved/potholed road from Mattole Beach to Redway - a wrong turn, actually, that turned out very right. True story. They may call it "Earth Spirit Signature Coffee Co." but "Crossroads Coffee Roasters" (CCR, for short) would be just as appropriate. You can't miss the smell, and once you enter the roastery/retail outlet, you'll be even more impressed by the open bags of beans, the coffee plant growing lushly in the window, the roaster going strong, the lines of people waiting to order drip (medium, dark, super dark) fresh scones, and the Humboldt County smiles and smartness customer service. Bring a coffee tin for ordering beans in bulk. We scored with rare Blue Java beans just in from the Pacific, with a Sumatra on drip, a blueberry scone for there, and clover creamed honey (made by Cisterican nuns of the Redwoods Monastery in Whitethorn) for home, when we could enjoy the Java with our own batch of homemade scones (we like to use dried plums or flame raisins in ours). I love local roasters who choose organic, fairly traded single origin beans, and I love a place that serves fresh drip without a lot of pretense. Usually, I expect to find them in college towns or urban enclaves, but Humboldt County is just one of those wonderful exceptions to the rule, where people live on lost coasts by choice, not necessity. And great coffee - for here and to go - that's just part of the deal. I generally road trip travel with a Hario manual ceramic grinder, V60 dripper, Primus camping stove, and titanium mug (600 ml), so having fresh beans to make before a camp fire at night, on the beach, under the redwoods, or beneath a snow-capped mountain, well it makes things downright comfortable, to have that pourover option handy. Places like Signature Coffee simply make such things possible, and that's one more reason to high five Humboldt. Who needs San Francisco, anyway, when all you need is here already? read more

Best place for a true iced coffee. Ice coffee cubes make Signature a win. A shame and a bit weird that they don't make any coffee drinks i.e. Lattes, cappuccinos. And the girls behind the counter are not usually very enthused. One note, I know we have a huge vagrant problem in sohum so it's understandable that you guys closed the restroom to the public. However, it really is an asset to your customers and allows your shop to be my first stop on my way into town. Please reopen it and maybe just require a key! read more

Nice, short drive off the 101. Cute town and great organic coffee shop. They roast on site. The only downside is that they have nowhere to sit, so if you're looking for a restful break from the road, you'll have to grab the coffee and sit in your car. :( read more

A much better than expect cup of coffee, in a place on would not expect anything even halfway decent. Nothing against the place; after all Humboldt is known for things, but coffee ain't one of them. All the same, the coffee was good, and well.... it's at least fifty miles to anything that can compete. Bonus points: They have Kona green beans in bulk. read more

I recently moved from Humboldt to Berkeley to go to grad school. I need coffee for that. In Humboldt, there's lots of places to get Signature Coffees (my fave is Black Thunder), but not so in Berkley, which appears to be the home of overpriced, underachieving, shi-shi foods (with some exceptions). But no Black Thunder in sight! Good thing Signature ships! I may have moved from behind the Redwood Curtain to the land of hippybourgeois plenty, but I'm not doing a damned thing without my coffee--which should be here in a few days. After a disappointing night in Shelter Cove and a good day of mountain bike riding at Paradise Royale, I was ready for a beer. Alas, we were driving to Mendocino and hoped to get a 'decent' cup of coffee for the 2 hour drive. We were so impressed with the shop, we have ordered from them. GO OUT OF YOUR WAY if you are driving through Garberville on 101. I had one of my best cups of drip coffee here in YEARS. The day was 85 degrees and the drip hot coffee was still the best. read more

What a great cup of Coffee in the Redwoods. Stopped here on my way back from Oregon. Found it on a whim, when you exit the freeway it looks like everything is in Garberville. If you turn right, traveling south from Oregon, towards Redway you will find this gem. They had bags of fresh green coffee beans and a roaster. They were very busy, so I didn't ask, but I think that they either roast there themselves or encourage you to roast your own beans. Very cool in my book. Only negative was that almost all the available roasts were Dark Roast. I am more of a Light city roast and it kinda turns me off to see only dark roasts. First off, their coffee is excellent! I have had no problems other than recently with the barista in the morning. She is a younger blonde girl it seems to have a chip on her shoulder. I came in this morning to order a large Sumatra as I always do, however today would be different. As it was my turn to order I approached the counter and asked politely for a large Sumatra. When the barista handed the cup to me I realized that the cup was smaller than I was used to holding in my hand and that she had actually given me a medium. I explained that I didn't realize she used a smaller cup until I seen that it barely fit in my hand right, asking for her to give me one size larger which would be a large, what I had originally ordered. Instead of simply putting the coffee into the larger cup and filling it up, she proceeded to snidely tell me "next time the sizes are right there" as she pointed towards the cup sizes. I looked at her and disbelief and stated that I had in fact ordered a large as she threw my change onto the counter. this is when I lost my cool and said as I walked out if you don't like your f****** job then don't f****** work here. I know that I may have overstepped my boundaries but as a paying customer who was being respectful the whole time I do not believe that I should have been treated this way. this is the only employee and the first instance I've ever had of rudeness and this establishment and their coffee is great, however I will continue to refrain from patronizing this establishment in the future. Every time I am in the Garberville area I stop by here and buy several pounds of their Black Thunder coffee. If you like strong coffee, you will like this one. They are closed on the weekends but you can buy many of their coffees at Ray's supermarket in downtown Garberville. read more

I've had coffee around the world, and my favorite is Signature's Black Thunder. On our way back home from San Francisco, we picked up 5lbs of organic Black Thunder and cups of iced and hot BT. Not only is the coffee the best, but the staff is wonderful and you often get there when they are roasting, as they were Monday. Usually have them ship the 5lbs, but it's always great to get it, as the young lady who helped us said, "from the source" If they'd been in business when I used to visit my grandparents in Garberville, I'd have been drinking good coffee much sooner. WIll be seeing them again in December on the way to the Bay. read more
