I am a resident here in Shelter Cove because of the remoteness and the wonderful sense of community. However, waiting 2 1/2 hours for food that is delivered cold, salty, and soggy is not acceptable no matter where you are. More importantly, having the wrong item delivered, and not being notified can be fatal. Ordering rock cod tacos, and being served shrimp tacos, which are not on the menu, can be catastrophic for some. If the item is not being served, it shouldn't be on the menu or you should be notified of a substitution. I thought this was a one off situation until I noticed another reviewer had the same issue. Having been there multiple times, last night was the busiest I've ever seen it; the staff was clearly not trained for this kind of a crowd and were beyond overwhelmed. There was one actual server (who was trying very hard to appease dozens of patrons), and a kitchen staff that was completely lost. Lack of trained staff led to tables receiving their orders multiple times, while other tables only received partial orders after hours of waiting. Because I live here, I will probably be back, but I won't be bringing guests as I did last night. Too embarrassing. Management, please have mercy on your staff and get the experienced help you need! So this place is pretty good. Portion sizes are solid, the beer is good, the presentation is... presentable, and the vibes are epic AF. I feel like there are just enough haters leaving ridiculously negative reviews that completely lack the geographic awareness required to understand why anyone comes to a place called the MF Lost Coast. For starters, there are only like 3-6 places to go, period, let alone a restaurant where you can grab dinner and drinks. Why, you ask, my kind denizen of anti-reviews? Because you're on a stretch of far Northern California coastline that's practically cut off from mainstream civilization. There's one road in and out, and the closest town is at least an hour away, let alone a proper grocery store. No drug stores. No Uber Eats. And, most blasphemous of all, no Costco. Or, if you prefer your single-serving organic vegetables wrapped in plastic, no Trader Jizzles. So yeah... for reasons, no one fucking lives here. I, for one, love this place. Is it perfect? No. Is it a deal? Absolutely not. But is it the best place within an hour to kick up your feet after a long day outdoorsing? Hell fucking yes. And if you actually want places like this to survive on a remote finger of the Northern California coast for years to come, maybe tell your single-serving, artisanal, Trader Blows organic attitude to get lost... somewhere else. read more

I have been following the Gyppo on line. In the area with friends for the of the Redwoods Hospice garden tour. Perfect time to try the restaurant. When we entered we were told to grab a menu and seat ourselves. Well, we sat and we sat. I finally went inside and asked for service. I was told that we had to use the QR code. I hadn't noticed it on the other end of the table. One friend's phone wasn't set up for that, another's phone was in the car and the other said that she is 80. I figured I could do it for the group. However, ordering drinks was time consuming and we wanted to get our order in. When we got our food, there were 2 orders for shrimp tacos. I thought I ordered the rockfish tacos as they were the only tacos listed on the menu. Luckily they weren't allergic to shellfish because the deliverer was not taking them back or taking our drink order. My clam chowder was not hot and very salty. I didn't realize that my friend at our table brought us water. I didn't know that she filled them herself or I would have gone in to refill as I had nothing to drink with my soup How do you tip when there is no service? What about the 5 reviews? Did they get any service? To sum up we got our own menus and water, we found our own seats and waited for ages before I went in to ask to order. Then I was told I had to order for the group with the QR code. Never having done it before I mistakenly ordered the wrong item. My fault. We never had any service interaction. Who do you even tip. We had a great time here sitting outside enjoying the view with our dog. I had the pale ale and my husband had the IPA. Both were very good. The beertender suggested the fishes, so I had grilled fish tacos and he had ceviche. Both were spot on and very fresh. They were setting up for Lost Coast Line Dancing from 6-8 every Thursday, so I got a few shots of the line dance teachers warming up. They looked like they were really enjoying themselves. My partner and I decided to drive out from Phillipsville to explore The Cove for the very first time. Neither of us had ever been to this small town in California and we were so excited and mesmerized with the beauty of it all. We were of course hungry and saw that there was a local dog friendly brewery nearby. Yay for us! We came to Gyppo on a Wednesday at 3 pm in late October and did not struggle with parking. Their parking space was very big and spacious to likely accommodate much more people on a busy day. Upon entering, we noticed the signs that directed us to seat ourselves and also noticed that the dog friendly area was outside. Since we had our dogs with us, we made our way to the beer garden. The views were spectacular! Their property overlooks the beach and a personal airport so during our visit, we saw some beautiful deer relaxing and also saw a small plane take off. For the food, we ordered fried cauliflower, Peruvian ceviche, and the fried sandwich. My partner is one to dive in right away when we get our food so unfortunately I didn't snap any pictures of the ceviche but wow! We were amazed by how delicious their food was. We opted to get the Frank's hot sauce with the cauliflower and although it was yummy, we will opt to try it with Korean bbq sauce next time. Their ceviche had different fish and it tasted so FRESH and so flavorful (it was our favorite!). The fried chicken was perfectly crunchy and had great toppings. I do wish it had some sort of zesty or spicy sauce in it but that's just a personal preference. For dessert, we wanted to order the creme brûlée but they were all out so we opted for their homemade brownie with vanilla ice cream. The brownie was delicious and not super chocolatie or sweet which I highly appreciated it. As for our drinks, I ordered a flight and my partner ordered an IPA. We found the beer to be very enjoyable as well with my favorite from the flight being the lager. If you are in the area, please come check out Gyppo Ale Mill. When I was there in Mar-2025, despite having fish & chips, rockfish tacos, salsa verde grilled fish, and shrimp tacos on the menu, all they had available were burgers ... So I gave into the inevitable, and had a $24 double bacon cheeseburger with fries and a hard cider. Both were good, but for a burger and a cider, it was $47+ after tax and tip, a little steep for a restaurant that had minimal service and a limited menu. The food quality was fine, but I felt like I was paying resort prices without resort quality service. It's a pleasant atmosphere, both in and out, with a view of the airport and the Pacific behind that ... so it's a nice location -- and a perfect place to fly-in with a small plane for the "$100 hamburger" (actually much more now when you consider the cost of flying a small plane, but ... still a good location). Gyppo Ale Mill is a restaurant with a relaxed vibe with both indoor and outdoor seating. It is both family friendly and dog friendly. We saw a lot more kids than you would normally see at a brewery. The outside area has a beer garden. They have a good selection of beer, wine, and cocktails. This is mainly a self-serve restaurant where you scan a QR code or order and or order at the bar and get a buzzer. There are utensils and napkins as well as water that you can serve yourself with. You can even pay on your phone when done, which means that one server can serve a lot of tables at once. The food was good and filling. I ordered the grilled fish tacos and a cocktail (Broken Compass). The cocktail was amazing! They have plenty of parking. There is a grassy area outside, which is nice. They also have a fire pit and games such as a foosball table, ping pong table, and corn hole to enjoy. Highly recommend! read more

What a joke this place is! We went for what we thought were $6 bloody Mary's as it says on menu, but when the bill came we were charged $16 each. When I told the waitress the menu says $6 she replied, "We know about that mistake but we just haven't changed it on the menu yet". When I went to manager to dispute issue he said, "yea, we know it says that on menu but haven't gotten around to changing it yet. After much back and forth he finally gave me my $40 back. We just finished 5 stellar days on the Lost Coast and Gyppos was calling to us. The service was fast and super hospitable, the salad was fresh and the burger was scrumptious. And the beer was just what we had been yearning for. This spot is so cool and the people are top-notch. They make you feel at home. If you wanted water, get up and get it yourselves. Want a refill then you have to go to the bar. There was ZERO SERVICE! The waiter brought us our drinks and ran away. Then he brought our food but only one set of silverware for two people. The bartender on Tuesday was super nice but was not able to multitask. We enjoyed two evenings at Gyppo's. The wait staff - Eric and Paige were just amazing. Kitchen staff is doing an incredible job as well. Especially considering how busy they were! We especially loved the blistered shishito peppers from the local Briceland Forest Farm - I've never seen ones that large. We grow them in our garden but a smaller variety. These were amazing. Dining options in Shelter Cove are sometimes limited. Such was the case on our recent visit but we were happy to dine here two nights in a row. Cold beers on tap - great selections. The first night we share fish tacos - locally, incredibly fresh Rockfish. They were so yummy. Just enough for the two of us. Gyppo's was packed both nights. Eric and Paige smiling through it all and being very responsive. Lots of locals. Night two, more cold beers. I had the Rainbow Kale Salad. It was not only delicious but beautiful. My husband had the Cajun Rockfish sandwich. It was good, but we think the bun and toppings overpowered the fish. But we were happy to be part of the Gyppos vibe. I got the Beer Flight: Dave's Pilsner: A crisp, grass-flavored pilsner with a 5.7% ABV and 24 IBU; Daydream Believer: A balanced pale ale with fresh, flavorful notes, boasting a 6.1% ABV and 31 IBU; Bob's Your Uncle: An English mild ale that's smooth and malty, with a 5.6% ABV and 26 IBU; Whistle Punk: A West Coast IPA featuring floral and citrus flavors, coming in at 7.0% ABV and 40 IBU. For soup, I ordered a cup of New England Clam Chowder, which is a house-made clam chowder that contain plenty of chopped clams. It was creamy, hearty, and delicious. For entree, I ordered their daily special (unfortunately they were out of fish that day, otherwise I would have really wanted to rock fish tacos) Baked Dungeness Crab with Garlic Baguette, which was actually really amazing. The entire dish was drenched with delicious garlic butter, which was heaven when paired with the baguette and crab meat. They literally serve you a whole baked Dungeness crab on a plate. Finally, I finished the course off with the salted Caramel Chocolate Mousse, which is a rich dessert that balances sweet and salty flavors providing a satisfying finish. They do have a QR code ordering system for busier times, but I went on a lighter day and the waitress was so attentive and friendly. Service was definitely top notch. Ambiance was great, they use really high end seats that are so nice to the touch and so comfy to seat on, which is another level of attention to detail that most restaurants misses (or wouldn't care about) so it was really a pleasant surprise. The two bartenders this evening, mostly just ignored the shit out of me, even helping the very nice couple sitting next to me, that came in after me, before even asking me for a drink order. I had two cocktails that were both mediocre for 14 and 16 dollars a piece. I ordered clam chowder and their Mac and cheese to go. Took one bite of each when I got back to my hotel, and had to throw both away. The sauce on the Mac and cheese didn't even really taste of anything and the sauce was broken, water and mealy. The atmosphere was amazing, the food was even better and the beer was refresh! The lady who served us the first night remembered us the next day. Get the cheese curds! As someone who grew up in the midwest, I approve of these cheese curds! They're so good. Also, get the fish tacos. I had never had a fish taco but a lady sitting next to us the first night had them and they smelt so good, I had to give them a shot! Perfect. I'm not sure I can have fish tacos anywhere else. The Whistle Punk West Coast IPA was spot on delicious - a beautiful clear golden ale that was well balanced. There is an airport at Shelter Cove and we saw one small plane take off. This place is the local brewery and is great. We were there on a Wednesday night for beer and dinner after a rainy day, but it turns out it was also Trivia Night. We are not trivia buffs and don't typically play reindeer games. However, Dave, who was running the trivia, has been doing this for years. It was a full house but he made us feel welcome, and it turns out we loved it! The beer was good and we tried the rockfish since it is line-caught locally. It was baked, topped with a green sauce with coconut rice and corn salsa. Portions were generous and delicious, but we also had to get the bucket of fries, which put everything over the top. Prices were reasonable, especially considering what restaurant suppliers have to do to get here! My hats off to all those that contribute to the island-like lifestyle in Shelter Cove. Wish this was near my home. Tuna logger bowl was a welcome item in a rural location. Good quality considering this is a brewery! Side of Mac and cheese was okay. They try to help it by adding bacon and green onions but it still tastes very similar to velveeta. Fries are super great! There are games to play like cornhole, Ping pong, table soccer. A fire pit. And there was a Friday night band for free, outdoors, so your ears don't blow off. Great. Actually quite good reggae and some energetic rock-ish songs too! Definitely understaffed, but all the staff are really moving and making an effort to provide the best service with a smile and accommodate. horrible experience. ended up waiting almost 2 hours for our food. we ordered using the QR code menu and only 1.5 hours later did they tell us that the beer cheese has been out of stock for hours so we had to replace 2 dishes. the waitress was also unapologetic about it and claimed she didn't know and that she couldn't track our order because we ordered using the QR code instead of directly from her, which didn't make sense to me. the truffle fries was strange being doused in greasy truffle mayo instead of truffle oil, and the clam chowder was a bit too peppery for my liking. the beef burger was chewy and had a beyond meat aftertaste. we also saw staff turn away customers who came at 7.45pm even though they closed at 9pm. read more

Gyppo Ale Mill's beer I tried recently while in the Northern California Coast area recently. All in all not bad. I liked the Czech style pilsner the best out of the two beers of theirs that I tried. The other was a pale ale. The pilsner was very appealing to me for it's crisp, clean, quaffable and corn flavor. Those flavors and textures made for a pretty strong beer. The pale ale was okay. Not bad by any means but not one that really won me over. This beer had a clean, biscuit with some citrus flavors to it. Normally something I'd be all about but again the whole combinational bouquet of flavors just didn't quite impress me... not like the pilsner. There's certainly other options to explore and would be worth trying out whenever the opportunity to try their beer arises again. read more

Well, I came back twice in one week and I'm glad I did. Gyppo had just posted three new specials, so we had to try them. I had the grilled ribeye with chimichurri withlocally grown blistered shishito peppers and a cold corn/red onion/tomato vinaigrette medley reminiscent of succotash. It was all very tasty. My sig other had the spicy (light) grilled shrimp on a bed of coconut rice. The shrimp were very large and completely cleaned- no tails to pull off! I love it! The spicy jalapeño green onion relish on the shrimp was not too spicy. Kind of similar to the chimichurri on my steak. We also shared a plate of crunchy fried cheese curds. Perfectly crispy cooked and the horseradish aioli was just right. No room for dessert this time. There's always next week! read more

Wonderful spot in Shelter Cove Ca billing itself as "most remote brewery in US", and I think they may be right. A 25 mile drive from 101 that might take you 1-2 hours and if snowing, forget it. But once you get down to Shelter Cove, Gyppo Mill a delight. They open at 4 and have a great outdoor patio with peek-a-boo views to ocean. Fantastic sunsets. Beers brewed on-site are really good. I opted for a sampler and then based on my preference, closed out with a nice porter. I got there right when they opened, so service was great. A few others joined me on patio before I left. Really good fish and chips dinner and menu is great showcasing the beer. Some good swag inside for sale as well. I'll probably go back in summer to enjoy the outside a bit more. Took a quick trip down to Shelter Cove to check it out and see the lighthouse! There are only a couple of places to eat in town and this place looked promising. The location is awesome, the views are great, they have outdoor seating and cornhole. When we were there they even had a live band, the music was interesting but it was live music! When we arrived on a Thursday afternoon we were asked if we had a reservation, of course we didn't but they happened to have one seat inside and one seat outside. We sat outside and were told they just finished happy hour so it might be a minute before someone helps us. Fortunately we were helped right away but the service was somewhat lacking for the rest of the dinner. They do have shade structures outside but most of the seats are in the sun. I tried a couple of their beers and they were pretty good, that's one thing this place has going for it. The menu is very simple, a chicken sandwich, some burgers, fish tacos and fish and chips. They were out of the taco ingredients. Being a haul from anywhere and a crazy road to get out here I get it. I got the fish and chips, the kids got hot dogs and a burger and my wife got a burger with a lettuce wrap. Pro tip, get the kids burger... it's the exact same thing as the $20 burger, cooked the same way and there was honestly no difference. Even better don't get a burger at all, they were dried out, not that good and well done. The fish and chips were not bad but for $30 I suggest drinking 3 beers instead. Sauce comes in a little cup and they make it very clear extra sauce is $2. You also get some sort of popcorn when you sit down, no clue what it's coated in but it was odd. Overall the place was cool and the location was epic, everything was very overpriced and that's coming from a Tahoe local. If you're going to charge that much for something you really need to up your game and serve some good food. An over cooked frozen burger isn't going to cut it. read more

Hey Gyppo Ale Mill, let's talk about how awesome you are. First off, you all are some of the most amazingly friendly people. Yeah I know everyone in the cove is friendly, but you guys are friendly under pressure. There are people who can juggle, and there are people who can juggle flaming chainsaws on a tightrope that is being gnawed on by hungry beavers. That's you guys. Juggling flaming chainsaws with smiles on your faces and making the nightly influx of tourists feel like locals. The food. I'm British and my mum would not approve of this but your fish n chips are the best I've ever eaten. The. Best. I've. Ever. Eaten. The only way to get fresher fish is to go out and catch it yourself and eat it on the boat. The batter is light, golden brown, and perfectly compliments the flaky goodness of the fish. Some breweries are so proud of their beer batter that they slather it on like a suit of deep-fried armor. I love that you let the fish do the talking! Clam chowder on point. Burgers, yeah those are good too. Pretzel and beer cheese, yes please. You care about what you're serving and it shows. The beer. I don't drink like I used to but I still have a couple at every visit and I've never been disappointed. This visit it was the Oatmeal Stout for me. The ambience. I don't think there's a better location anywhere. Live music, ping pong, cornhole, and we always make new friends at the fire pit. Wanna sit inside on a cozy couch? You can do that. Wanna sit outside and watch the sunset while you sip on your favorite suds? You can do that too. I've seen some negative reviews from people unhappy with their experience. I'd like to address those reviews and anyone who may be wondering if the Gyppo is worth a visit. You're visiting what is probably the most remote brewery in the country, in a town where the tourists outnumber the full-time residents. Life is different in the cove. It's slower, quieter, more peaceful, and more meaningful. The locals are the friendliest I have ever met anywhere. If you love the vibe of the cove, then you ought to love the vibe of the Gyppo. They are one in the same in my opinion. During peak tourist season, the staff are going to be overwhelmed at times. Try to focus less on how long it takes to get your beer and more on the fact that your server remembers your name, or that the sun is setting over your shoulder, or that you just made a new friend at the firepit, or that you're about to enjoy a meal made with fresh locally-sourced ingredients. As for the prices, I personally don't find them much higher than anywhere else, especially given the logistics of running a restaurant in such a remote location. As an example, my second-favorite fish n chips are only $1 less than the Gyppo and they aren't nearly as good. If you're visiting the cove and you enjoy the vibe, I think you're going to enjoy the Gyppo. From my outsiders perspective, it is as much a part of the vibe as the beach, the wildlife, and the locals who call the cove home. If you're frustrated that your beer took a few minutes to get to you, or your fish that was caught that day was pricier than the filet-o-fish you had in Sacramento last week, this place probably isn't for you. We stayed in Shelter Cove before we started our Lost Coast hike and we chose Gyppo for our last meal before hitting the trail. The food was really good with a nice selection. The fish taco's were delicious, and they have a great selection of their beers. Ordering is done by using your phone and a bar code. Once ordered they bring the food out to you. We enjoyed it so much we went back for lunch after we completed the hike three days later! read more

We were so lucky this was within walking distance of our hotel. My man flew us to Shelter Cove, so we didn't have a car or a scooter to go far. It was a great night to come here since there was live entertainment! The vibe was lively, and the outside dining was delightful. There were lights from above and a big fire pit by our table to keep us warm. Let's get on with the food, huh?!?! We started with Pulled Pork Fries, and WOW, it was huge! The french fries were tasty when eaten together with the sweet pulled pork. The pulled pork was tender! I like how they added the slaw to make me feel a little healthier and better. They also topped it with fried onions, and it kicked ass! I wish there were more of it. I couldn't get enough. The Fish & Chips were not as exciting as the Pulled Pork Fries, but they were good! We forgot how there would be fries in both of our orders! Yikes! Oh well, they were yummy. The cod was perfectly cooked, the beer batter wasn't too thick, and we enjoyed eating them. We ended our meal with a cheesecake. Oh man, it was divine! The cheesecake was smooth and silky. I don't know what kind it was, but I want to come back for that cheesecake. For drinks, we had the 0Q5 Flight. According to my man, it's the code for the airport or something like that. I liked the Pink the best out of four, and I also enjoyed the Gyppo W.H. My man's fave was DOS1 - I think. We also got a root beer from checking in on Yelp. Woo hoo!!! The servers were friendly and apologetic since the wait was long. We didn't mind. This place rocks! The power had been out most of the day and they opened in the evening and made it happen! The food tasted great and was the perfect temperature. The waitress was so nice and helpful when selecting bears. And even when you are completely stuffed don't pass up the home made ice cream! We took ours to go! The have amazing outdoor seating and the outdoor seating is also dog friendly ! read more

Wow, we just had the most enjoyable evening and meal at Gyppo Ale Mill. The beer and cocktails were delicious,. Service was attentive and friendly. The menu had great options, with a thoughtful variety of flavors and generous portions! Also The weather and sunset magnified the lost coast ocean view ambiance.
