22 years ago I discovered this salon when I lived in San Francisco. I've been living in Oakland for 19 years and I still cross the bridge to go to the salon because I have yet to find another salon with the ambience the and caliber of technicians anywhere. Not even when I lived in Sacramento for 3 years. I recently found out that J the original owner/founder is no longer managing the shop. They also have lots of snacks and offer waters. I feel like my gel nails stay on consistently long here and are super well done. I really expected more from this salon. I was referred here and all I heard was how amazing their quality is. Well the manicurist hardly even looked at me the entire hour and a half (awkward). She kept slipping with the electric shaper and caused cut lines and divots in the acrylic. She did not clean my fingers after shaping and filing the acrylic so I had dust and acrylic pieces trapped in the polish, making them look spotty. When I brought it up she just said it was because of the tips...no it's not. It's one thing to make a mistake but please take ownership, especially when I am paying $50 for an acrylic manicure. They get three stars because the salon is lovely and they offer complimentary snacks. :/ read more

Wen used a VERY rough drill and filed straight into my natural nail, leaving dents and brittle pieces in my nails, and tried to gaslight me it's all my fault because- I think they just don't have the techniques/ awareness to do the right job, but over promised. I've lived in the neighborhood for 12 years and today 12-31-22 was my first visit and it was a great experience. I went in for a full gel nail set and T was fantastic. She was careful and precise. And something I've never experience with any other salon, nail tech and /or nail artist: she put SPF on my hands before putting them under the UV light. That in itself tells me she is well trained in her talent and cares about her customers. Not only is T great but the rest of the staff are also great. They're all very polite, friendly, the salon is very clean. Another important thing I noticed is that they're all very personable with the regulars. Such a wonderful new experience for me! Myself and a friend both had gel manicures and we both experienced chips and breaks within two days. I would definitely never get a manicure here again. I am a loyal customer for Brazilian waxes w/ T. Excellent job, fast, clean and thorough. T is friendly but not overly talkative (it's like when you're at the dentist and they're trying to talk to you...when you're getting your privates waxed it's hard to talk too much due to the pain!). I have been going to her for years. Only reason I'm taking off one star is I once got a light colored gel manicure and when I pulled up my black tights the color transferred (this never happened to me with gel nails). Did my french gel manicure here before my wedding on a Wednesday morning appointment. The total of the French Gel Manicure with LED light nail dryers, and the pedicure with Milk & Honey Scrub w/Sweet Almond & Hibiscus Hot Foot Bath Pedicure was $78 without tips. It feels worth the price when they did an excellent job repairing my broken nails and they made it beautiful and clean. I came in for the second time on a Saturday morning prior to my honeymoon trip, the customer service is still really excellent, but the person who did my gel manicure wasn't as skillful as the previous person: The French nail white lines were not done as clean, and a small fiber went in to one of the gel nail, the person applied another layer of the nail polish instead of removing it off. I understood because it seems like Saturday appointment has way more people and rush. It's also better to know who you would prefer for your nail service. However the good part for Saturday appointment is Silk Nail Salon provided light finger foods for customers - They've got egg moose tarts, chocolate croissants, cheese, crackers etc. Very thoughtful services for overall experience. Fantastic place! Staff was amazing--very kind and welcoming. As for the treatment itself, we got gel manicures and one gel pedicure/one regular pedicure. The polish was well-painted (thin, opaque coats) and the nail and cuticle care/shaping was superb. Finished with relaxing and thorough foot massage. They really do give the full service with a foot soak, hot towels, hot stones, and lotion/massage. They also have snacks laid out and offer you a beverage. We had a great time. I took my best friend here for a little pampering for her birthday recently as she's been a bit stressed and needed a little R&R. After doing some much needed research, I chose Silk and booked our appointment on a Saturday afternoon after reading about their All-Day snacks on Saturday--Definitely a plus and a major selling point on getting me to book our manicures and pedicures. Making our appointments, I had specifically called back to request the private room upstairs as I was looking for some quiet time for us to talk and catch up, but unfortunately, we were seated in the main floor with all of the other customers. This started off my stratification a little bit, but I gave the benefit of the doubt, and didn't bother to dispute this issue. Aside from this little mishap, the overall experience of our mani-pedi's was very pleasant. And I very much like the variety of goodies that are provided on Saturdays. Saturday's include a good selection of cookies, muffins, croissants, macaroons, and Asian buns; fruits bowls, carrot and celery sticks. I know how awkward it can be and how bothered other people are about the technicians yip yapping loudly in their native tongues. So it was very nice that the gals here didn't do that. Very calming and relaxing time on their comfortable couches. All in all, I will definitely return for a mani and pedi from here at Silk. I went back to Silk again recently and had a less than stellar experience. I made an appointment a couple of weeks in advance, but when I arrived at my time (2 p.m. on a Sunday), it seemed a bit chaotic. There were some open chairs but no nail technicians, and it didn't seem like any customers had been or were being checked in. The woman told me to wait for a bit; I wasn't sure how long the wait would be, but some sort of estimate (5 min? 30 min?) would have been nice. A couple of other people arrived after me and got started right away, so maybe they had appointments at an earlier time slot? I'm not sure, but 20 minutes later, I was still waiting. I went back up to ask when they would be ready for me, and she seemed surprised to find that I was still waiting. I had a male nail technician (I think his name is Tony). I don't particularly like male nail guys, but if they do a good job, I won't hate. I found his service to be pretty poor. He was a little rough pushing my cuticles back but he also just seemed generally sloppy. But, the worst part was that he nicked the top of my foot with one of his nail tools. I recoiled in pain and looked down to find my foot bleeding. Eew. I am already a bit of a clean freak when it comes to getting my toes done, and I really don't want to have a cut on my foot while I'm getting my toes done. No apology from him; he kind of just looked at me with a face that said "opps" and shrugged his shoulders. I'd always gone to Silk for the good service and above-average cleanliness, but this last time, the guy who worked on my toes just seemed careless. Perhaps I'll try them again but probably not anytime soon. read more

Not only the lavender foot soak, but the warm apple spiced emulsion they apply to both hands and feet made this one of the most relaxing hours of my LIFE. They brought me a cold bottled water to balance the extra warm water my feet soaked in. The massages before the nail painting will put you right to sleep. I had the most adorable little girl named 'Wen' do my hands. Poofy pink lips and an adorable round face with the most pure complexion - you'da thunk she was five years old (except she's pregnant!). The bay bridge was gridlocked which resulted in our being approximately 15 minutes late. The bridesmaid's arrived pretty much on time. Silk's took it in stride. None of the drama that I've read about from other salons about our tardiness occurred. The closest parking space we found was in front of San Francisco tower. It was time to feed the meter just after the warm lotion hand and foot massage. [This is a particularly divine service especially if you type a lot or have crackberry thumb!] I had resolved to just make the trek before my polish was applied. Hakuna Matata! It means no worries. Why? Wen, who performed my gorgeous manicure, took it upon herself to make the trek to my car and feed the meter. She only knew the make, model and color because I didn't remember my license plate number. We all melted like butter. Guess what happened next! There was a spontaneous desire for eyebrow waxing. Although, on Friday, there was only one technician available to perform the task she took two of the bridesmaids. TWO!!! Beautiful results and no one was tardy for subsequently scheduled tasks. Kickin' back at Silk Gettin' cute sippin' on tea w/gummie bear- ers Laid back with our comfort on their minds & their minds on our comfort We progressed onto other tasks around the city when it was discovered that the bride's cell phone was still at the drying station. I've gotten familiar with navigating the city on foot & via BART but not so much by driving. I missed a turn & called. The owner very graciously gave me directions, stayed on the line with me and told me more about the city in general. She stood on the corner with the cell phone so I wouldn't have to find parking!!! Isn't that amazing? No matter what service you get at Silk Nail Salon you will be treated like royalty. Locals should check this place out. 4.5 Stars for Tina and Nini who ROCK!!! Silk is on my way home and has started to be my go-to for manis since Recharge is somewhat outta my way now. :( Mani ($18 and $21 for French): So far I've gotten 5 mani's at Silk all of which lasted more than 1 week WITHOUT one chip. YAY!!! In all those times, my nails were perfectly shaped and buffed. I am SUPER ANAL about my nails and tend throw a slight fit inside if they're are not painted perfectly. I can say each and every time, each nail bed was painted meticulously. The french was done very well as well. You can tell these ladies have skill when they barely need to use a brush to clean up the polish. The hand/arm massage is good although I don't understand the literal dosing of lotion to the point I can't even see my arm anymore. Anyhow, I digress. Pedi ($28): The pedi's are ok. I normally don't like using pumice stones b/c they don't really get down to town. So, my only complaint is the type of tools they use for their pedi. But other than that, pretty good foot and leg massage and toes are painted well. Variety of Colors: Thus far, I've never seen a salon with that many colors. Silk must have 150+ in Essie, OPI, Chanel, YSL, etc. SERVICE: I love Tina and Nini! They are total sweethearts and I enjoy chatting it up with them when I'm there. But the owner is a bit errr ehhh not so friendly. AMBIANCE: I love the plushy chairs that recline; very relaxing. Not so sure if the free candy (gummies and chocolate) is a good or bad thing yet. LoL! The space itself is not so sheee shee like Recharge and White Ginger, but you go more for the quality than anything. When I moved to LA from SF I've researched for similar places and nothing could compare to SILK. I would make trips to ONLY get my nails done here. Atmosphere: Soft yet classic hits are playing commercial free in the background. All leather chairs and cute sofas. Huge bamboo tree that gently grows up the indoor walls. Even the restroom is my favorite! Candles are lit and glowing in a serene bathroom with a duvet! Service: All the girls including Mason speak to you to the best of their ability in English. You don't have to worry about any languages that you are not comfortable with being spoken in front of you. I, on the other hand, LOVE practicing my Cantonese, Mandarin and Vietnamese with the girls and they appreciate it! Quality: Brand name polishes such as OPI, Essie, YSL, CHANEL etc to name a few. Great quality and my pedicures always last for a solid month! I like to get my nails cut really short so I don't have to come back too often. They also offer gel. Hygiene: All instruments are sterilized in an autoclave which is the same machine that kills 100% fungus, bacteria, viruses, E.Coli..etc. I am a Dental Clinician and appreciate the fact that SILK properly follows protocols with sterilization, and pouching. The nail technicians also open the sterilized pouches in front of you! All cotton rolls, scrubs and wipes are disposable and single used. Perks: What sets them apart is the warm mango lotion that is heated up just right and than spread all over your legs/arms. You are massaged for 10 min! This is extremely longer than ANY nail salon I have ever been to. Then they bring out a warm scented towel which is wrapped around your legs/arms along with a mini massage to clean off any access lotion. You are given disposable slippers in cute colors if you forgot to bring your own. Saturdays there is always a FREE showcase/ buffet of finger food, fruit, drinks, Mediterranean food and dim sum. I on purpose try my best to go on Saturdays. Regardless of what day, snacks and candies are all over the place especially while you wait at the drying station while reading the newest trending magazine! I have been going to SILK for many years now and practically know almost all of the girls by name and their own families. I consider this salon a safe haven where I can truly relax and feel pampered. This is my 'splurge' mani/pedi place. They have cozy recliners instead of those annoying massage chairs (which I think are made for people at least 3" shorter than me- those rollers never seem to massage anything helpful). You soak your feet in a big steamy bowl of water and herbs and things just get more awesome from there. They heat up the lotion they use for massage, and then wrap you with steaming hot towels before polishing your nails. Even the polish job lasts longer than my 'steal' mani place. (Cosmo reference, check.) The chocolate on the drying bar completes the 'perfect spa day' experience. I wish I could go once a week. read more

I really did not enjoy my experience here and on top of that the prices are outrageous. My manicure lasted three days before it started to chip. The worst part, however, was listening to the owner berate her employees in the back room about heating pads. It was so cringeworthy listening to the owner yell at some poor woman in the back room because she forgot to offer my group a heating pad. People deserve to be treated with respect. It wasn't as if she made a comment or seemed mad, this lady was being yelled at really loudly for a minor mistake. The owner was rude to the rest of her employees as well. Silk has become my go-to nail salon in SF. I'm a bit neurotic and super picky about my nails, and the ladies here have never let me down! The nail technicians are incredibly detail-oriented, meticulously comparing each nail to make sure the shapes and lengths are as even as possible. I have gotten so many compliments on every manicure I've gotten here. I've only gotten a few pedicures, but they feel quite luxurious for a fairly reasonable price. They do a really nice massage, and the flowers in the water are a nice touch. I also appreciate the atmosphere- it's quiet and relaxing, not usually a whole lot of chatter. After two days my nails were chipping and peeling and all I did oh my vacation was swim.
