The food here is SPICY!! There were a lot of immigrant Chinese coming here for lunch, so the food is definitely authentic Hunan cuisine, I just didn't expect it to be so spicy. If you get anything other than Mild, which I stupidly did, it is like a 9/10 on a normal spicy scale. If you like really spicy food, this place is for you, the flavors were solid. It was just a little overwhelming, I could only eat about a third of my dish. I might try it again and get it 'Mild' to see if it's more palatable, but I don't think I would seek it out. read more

Wow. I just finished eating my food delivery from here and I had to leave a review! It was so authentic and delicious. I ordered the pork liver with peppers over rice, pigs ears and fried tofu. Fried tofu was average but the other two are so delicious that I was reminded of China. I didn't know about this restaurant until door dash but will definitely visit the restaurant in person soon! If you're questioning the spicy level to choose, get MILD! I learned my lesson. I thought I could handle medium; the employee telling us led me to believe I could handle medium. NOPE! I spent most of my meal picking out peppers and chili seeds. They gave us some broth to dull the spiciness which helped. The spiciness aside it was a good noodle bowl. This place is really close to time square so we had to come here so we had to come here since I was craving noodles. I was just a little underwhelmed. The food was so salty, partly attributed by the spicy was, but I could only taste salt. There weren't enough noodles in ratio to the meat and veggies. I had to really search for the noodles. The meat and veggies were ok, other than spicy. The chicken was nice and tender. I mean, the noodles were ok but they didn't do it for me. The service was slow when we went which is ok because there was a long line during lunch hours. It reminded me a little bit of fast food, since they come in these single-use plastic containers (I guess you could reuse them again if you are into sustainability). We just threw them away because we couldn't take them with us. It was incredibly hot to the point of sweltering in the restaurant, since there likely isn't an ac in there. The shop is a little bit underground, so there isn't a lot of air circulation. Overall, the noodles were ok. read more

Their hunan style noodles which encompasses a ton of peppers, was very tasteful. We went with a party of 12 and a lot of us ended up removing most of the peppers. It was our first time so we didn't realize but you can request for less of it. Major issue here was their style of service which was close to nil. They gave my husband the wrong level of spiciness that we had ordered for our sick son and then refused to correct it. Pretty thoughtless and rude. I'm a big stickler for service. So happy to discover this place - What a hidden gem right around Time Square! From the decor to the food, you would definitely be in for a treat! Once you enter through the very low key storefront, you're immediately transcended into a world of relaxation and calm from all the hustle and bustle of the outside world. The majorly wood decor is both simplistic and elegant decor with a very zen vibe. The curvy communal table in the center kinda reminds me of a giant noodle! So many varieties of dishes to choose from! For the main dishes, basically it's a 3 step process where you 1st choose the protein / topping (Ma in Hunan language), then you can choose the style you want to pair with the toppings - dry mix noodle, soup noodle or rice and lastly pick the spice level. Fair warning - Choose careful when it comes to the spice level, Hunan cuisine is known for its spiciness! The extra spicy (aka Hunan Spicy) is only for the brave souls! All the toppings are made to order! You'll definitely taste that wok hay - Uncle Roger would've approved! Lol A lot of the key Ingredients are imported from Hunan - I was especially impressed by the smoked bamboo shoots which has a crunchy texture and a sophisticated deep flavor that comes from a special smoking process and then it sucked up all the flavors from the broth and the stir fried pork. The thick flat noodle is their specialty which apparently requires a length and complicated process to make that can take up to a whole day and night involving grinding the rice and then aging the noodles. These noodles are made from scratch - starting with the special rice imported from Hunan which needs to have the right level of starch content to create that signature smooth and silky texture of bona fide Hunan noodles (the stickier and more starchy rice will yield a more cheung fun like texture). Because of the time and efforts it takes to make these noodles, they're limited everyday. The noodle broth is stewed for loooong time with pork, chicken, and various other bones which gives it a deep and multi-dimensional flavor profile which get absorbed by the noodles. Didn't get a chance to try their non-noodle/rice dishes. But they sure look enticing! read more

Kind of a standard of chinese food, but they don't serve them. They recommend their dumplings instead. Not a big deal, but if you like those crunchy eggrolls don't look for them here. I got a pork and pepper bowl. You have your choice of base (noodles or rice), which is nice. You also pick how spicy you want your food, from mild to very spicy. I picked medium, but the woman at the counter talked me out of it saying their food is spicier than other places and play it safe with mild. Well, no such luck. I really would have liked more heat. I had already gotten back to my hotel, so couldn't just pop back in to get more heat. I'd suggest if you get a takeout that is "mild" that you ask for a little container of chili oil or something to bring with you. That said, the food itself was very good. Fresh tasting and well seasoned. if you don't like spicy, you'd love it. The price is I think a little high, even for midtown area, but in this area I have paid more for less quality. read more

Wow. Was not expecting a very authentic Chinese place near Times Square, in this area. I went twice I think for lunch, both take out. One time I got the spicy hunan beef, the second time I basically got the same but with squid. The sauce is really good, and they give a lot of vegetables and a variety which I like. I think there was celery, bok choy, peppers (long hot pepper and some chilis) and some others in there. The beef was really tasty, although a bit salty, but not enough to make me not like it or give me a bad impression. The sauce seems like it's made with real chili's and it's really spicy. I can handle spice, and this isn't more than I can handle, but the "medium" has me finishing with my nose running and some sweat building on my temples. It's authentic spice and I like that they don't compromise on that. The price point to me is slightly high at $16-$18 for the hunan beef after all is said and done, but they do give a generous portion. There's a counter running down the middle of the take out style restaurant with pretty ample seating, but to me this is more a take and go kind of place. Very authentic southwest Chinese cuisine in an unassuming area for it. If you usually go to Flushing or Mott Street for your Chinese food, give this place a try, it will give both those places a decent run for their money. read more
