Wow. I just finished eating my food delivery from here and I had to leave a review! It was so authentic and delicious. I ordered the pork liver with peppers over rice, pigs ears and fried tofu. Fried tofu was average but the other two are so delicious that I was reminded of China. I didn't know about this restaurant until door dash but will definitely visit the restaurant in person soon! If you want to try authentic Chinese food, can't go wrong here. I rarely give 5 star review but this one deserves it. read more

Came here for a quick bite after work and couldn't be happier. It's a fast casual place, and most people were ordering for take out. Service was quick and efficient. I had the spicy pig trotter on top of soup noodles, with an added soft boiled egg, and it was everything I wanted on a cold winter day, super flavorful, hearty and fulfilling. A spot for quick and tasty lunch. Suuuuper impressed by their stew beef that was tender through and through. Was pretty meh by the noodles and soup tho. Stopped by on our way to a show last night. I ordered the hot and sour fish soup noodles and my husband ordered the stir fried chicken with chili paste with noodles. We were warned about spice levels, so I changed my order from medium to mild, and my husband, who has a pretty high spice tolerance, ordered spicy and was sweating during part of the meal. Both of us enjoyed our meals. We got our food within 10 minutes of ordering. I'll definitely think about coming back here with more time the next time I head to a Broadway show. read more

If you're questioning the spicy level to choose, get MILD! I learned my lesson. I thought I could handle medium; the employee telling us led me to believe I could handle medium. NOPE! I spent most of my meal picking out peppers and chili seeds. They gave us some broth to dull the spiciness which helped. The spiciness aside it was a good noodle bowl. There was the right ratio of ingredients. Not too many noodles. Plenty of squid! I look forward to trying other dishes with MILD spiciness! read more

This place is really close to time square so we had to come here so we had to come here since I was craving noodles. I was just a little underwhelmed. The food was so salty, partly attributed by the spicy was, but I could only taste salt. There weren't enough noodles in ratio to the meat and veggies. I had to really search for the noodles. The meat and veggies were ok, other than spicy. The chicken was nice and tender. I mean, the noodles were ok but they didn't do it for me. The service was slow when we went which is ok because there was a long line during lunch hours. It reminded me a little bit of fast food, since they come in these single-use plastic containers (I guess you could reuse them again if you are into sustainability). We just threw them away because we couldn't take them with us. It was incredibly hot to the point of sweltering in the restaurant, since there likely isn't an ac in there. Came here for a snack and we got the pig ears salad and homemade cold sweet flower jelly (not pictured). The pig ear is so flavorful and tasted very authentic! If I were to describe the texture, it would be crunchy and chewy at the same time. The jelly was perfectly balanced with it's sweetness. The price is a steal for the area and surprised there aren't more people eating here. read more

Their hunan style noodles which encompasses a ton of peppers, was very tasteful. We went with a party of 12 and a lot of us ended up removing most of the peppers. It was our first time so we didn't realize but you can request for less of it. Major issue here was their style of service which was close to nil. They gave my husband the wrong level of spiciness that we had ordered for our sick son and then refused to correct it. Pretty thoughtless and rude. I'm a big stickler for service. Would have highly recommended them if not for the horrible response. read more

I didn't really enjoy this meal. Both options we got seemed super greasy. My niece got the stew beef which seemed super fatty and gross looking. This is a great place to stop by for a meal before a Broadway show. I've tried the Chairman Mao's favorite braised pork dry mix noodles, the Hunan style sauteed beef dry mix noodle, and the shrimp+chive+pork dumplings. The prices for the portion size are a little on the expensive side compared to Chinatown pricing but I would consider it a great deal in the area. There is ample seating (order in the back, grab any seat) and a restroom for customers. Service is friendly. read more

So happy to discover this place - What a hidden gem right around Time Square! From the decor to the food, you would definitely be in for a treat! Once you enter through the very low key storefront, you're immediately transcended into a world of relaxation and calm from all the hustle and bustle of the outside world. The majorly wood decor is both simplistic and elegant decor with a very zen vibe. The curvy communal table in the center kinda reminds me of a giant noodle! So many varieties of dishes to choose from! For the main dishes, basically it's a 3 step process where you 1st choose the protein / topping (Ma in Hunan language), then you can choose the style you want to pair with the toppings - dry mix noodle, soup noodle or rice and lastly pick the spice level. Fair warning - Choose careful when it comes to the spice level, Hunan cuisine is known for its spiciness! The extra spicy (aka Hunan Spicy) is only for the brave souls! All the toppings are made to order! You'll definitely taste that wok hay - Uncle Roger would've approved! Lol A lot of the key Ingredients are imported from Hunan - I was especially impressed by the smoked bamboo shoots which has a crunchy texture and a sophisticated deep flavor that comes from a special smoking process and then it sucked up all the flavors from the broth and the stir fried pork. The thick flat noodle is their specialty which apparently requires a length and complicated process to make that can take up to a whole day and night involving grinding the rice and then aging the noodles. These noodles are made from scratch - starting with the special rice imported from Hunan which needs to have the right level of starch content to create that signature smooth and silky texture of bona fide Hunan noodles (the stickier and more starchy rice will yield a more cheung fun like texture). Because of the time and efforts it takes to make these noodles, they're limited everyday. The noodle broth is stewed for loooong time with pork, chicken, and various other bones which gives it a deep and multi-dimensional flavor profile which get absorbed by the noodles. Didn't get a chance to try their non-noodle/rice dishes. But they sure look enticing! read more

Been craving for rice noodles and found this place midtown. Love how they packed the delivery food. All the noodles and soup are separated. Noodles are still nice and not too soft when it got home. I enjoyed the spicy sour fish noodles soup. Pork liver noodles soup is great too. I just wish there's more pork livers in there. Will definitely order again soon. read more

They have vegan options! I loved the veggie dumplings- really yummy filling! The thing with veggie dumplings is that they can be hit or miss. Some are bland, but some are really flavorful-- and these are one of the more flavorful ones I've had with mushroom & tofu filling! Would come back just to get more veggie dumplings. I got the hot & sour vegetable noodles. The hot and sour topping was great- nice balance of tang and spicy. The sauce on the noodles itself was a little oily for me. Noodles were yummy & chewy! BLUF: it's a little pricey for the portion size, but good tasting and fresh. I went here on a weekday evening looking for a quick, good chinese food meal. It's a small place with a few tables and a counter for eating. The staff was very friendly and helped me make my choice of food. One downside: no eggrolls. Kind of a standard of chinese food, but they don't serve them. They recommend their dumplings instead. Not a big deal, but if you like those crunchy eggrolls don't look for them here. I got a pork and pepper bowl. You have your choice of base (noodles or rice), which is nice. You also pick how spicy you want your food, from mild to very spicy. I picked medium, but the woman at the counter talked me out of it saying their food is spicier than other places and play it safe with mild. Well, no such luck. I really would have liked more heat. I had already gotten back to my hotel, so couldn't just pop back in to get more heat. I'd suggest if you get a takeout that is "mild" that you ask for a little container of chili oil or something to bring with you. That said, the food itself was very good. Fresh tasting and well seasoned. if you don't like spicy, you'd love it. The price is I think a little high, even for midtown area, but in this area I have paid more for less quality. read more

Wow. Was not expecting a very authentic Chinese place near Times Square, in this area. I went twice I think for lunch, both take out. One time I got the spicy hunan beef, the second time I basically got the same but with squid. The sauce is really good, and they give a lot of vegetables and a variety which I like. I think there was celery, bok choy, peppers (long hot pepper and some chilis) and some others in there. The beef was really tasty, although a bit salty, but not enough to make me not like it or give me a bad impression. The sauce seems like it's made with real chili's and it's really spicy. I can handle spice, and this isn't more than I can handle, but the "medium" has me finishing with my nose running and some sweat building on my temples. It's authentic spice and I like that they don't compromise on that. The price point to me is slightly high at $16-$18 for the hunan beef after all is said and done, but they do give a generous portion. There's a counter running down the middle of the take out style restaurant with pretty ample seating, but to me this is more a take and go kind of place. Very authentic southwest Chinese cuisine in an unassuming area for it. If you usually go to Flushing or Mott Street for your Chinese food, give this place a try, it will give both those places a decent run for their money. read more

Decent restaurant for a quick meal! Soup was a little too oily for me. The braised beef noodles weren't as flavorful as I would have liked, although the beef itself was very tender. My favorite one was the pepper with pork noodle soup, so I would try that one if you come! Also, the AC was not very strong, which was difficult when eating hot noodle soups. I just came here since it's close to me, but I probably wouldn't travel to come here. read more

It was kind a late. I was a little bit hungry. This was right near my hotel. I just had some dumplings but they were really incredible. (Actually, the dumplings were only partially pan fried as you can see in the picture. The woman noticed that the flame wasn't on under the frying pan and, wanting to go home, chose to box them up anyway. They were still delicious.) But there was nothing particularly memorable about them. The menu says the secret recipe has been passed down through generations for more than 110 years, but I found that claim hard to reconcile with what was on the plate. Slow-roast a slab of pork ribs for four hours at 250°F, I can get a very similar result at home. Famous Assorted Bowl: This used to be one of my favorite dishes here, and I ordered it almost every time I visited. Unfortunately, this time it was a real disappointment. The ingredients no longer tasted freshly prepared, well-seasoned, or flavorful. Instead, much of the dish had the bland, slightly lifeless quality of previously frozen food. Even the shrimp in the soup did not taste particularly fresh. Boiled Shredded Dry Bean Curd with Chicken and Shrimp: This is a classic Yangzhou dish and another item I used to order regularly. In the past, the bean-curd sheets were cut into extremely fine threads, with a soft and delicate texture that absorbed the flavor of the broth beautifully. This time was completely different. The bean-curd threads were hard and dry, with the texture of a packaged frozen product, and they had absorbed almost none of the broth's flavor. What had once been a delicate, carefully prepared dish now tasted surprisingly flat. Overall, Tipsy Shanghai used to be a restaurant I returned to for several specific dishes. However, both the quality of the ingredients and the care in preparation seem to have declined noticeably.
