Ok... this was a nightmare. I came years ago, it was awful, but we tried again. I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE BEEN TREATED BY A MANAGER SO TERRIBLY. I thought he must be joking. A simple question turned ugly.a complete psycho. Then I asked for some help from the front desk, she rolled her eyes at me and was rude too. Maybe they are used to rowdy crowds. We have small kids . The manager was so indignant I wanted to call the police. I just kept thinking he's got to be kidding me. So once again I tried to plan a beautiful trip for my kids and this hotel was as gross as it was years ago. I know everything is outdated and dirty, but I've never been treated so poorly by management. He must've been having a terrible day, because there was no reason for him to raise his voice. This place is like going back in time, and not in a good way. The carpet looks and smells like it's from the 80's. Half the lights in our room didn't work and the TV was hit or miss on what channels actually came in. The breakfast was surprisingly good compared to the rest of the hotel. The location was by far the best part of the experience and makes the rest of the experience somewhat tolerable. Some major upgrades are needed to improve the rating. read more

Our stay included a clogged sink, an hour and a half of maintenance plunging it, dirty sink water sprayed all over the bathroom, and brushing our teeth in the bathtub. Customer service was equally as bad. After placing calls for a week straight, I finally got a hold of management and they would not comp the room. They also tried to blame us for not requesting to be moved (even though the hotel was sold out). Terrible accommodations and terrible customer service. Lower your expectations immensely if you ever have to stay here. And only stay here if you HAVE to. Sleeping in your car would actually be better. read more

We rented the presidential suite for the space of the extra room and bar area. We knew the hotel was outdated and did not expect pristine conditions....but for the price of the room I didn't expect a door that didn't lock and a ceiling that was losing pieces all day/night. There are double doors that lead to the living area. The locks work.....but my husband could literally push the door open from the outside. Thankfully we love local and he grabbed some wood wedges to help keep it more secure. When I mentioned it upon checkout the lady didn't believe that it was something that had been happening for a while. I told her it definitely looked like it had been shoved open several times and one of the locks was actually falling off. They can't guarantee any kind of safety for people or belongings in a room that doesn't lock at all. So disappointed. read more

This place has the distinction of being both the worst and most expensive hotel I've ever stayed. It's disgusting to me that they charge $250 per night. I don't care how great the location is; this hotel clearly lacks all sense of ethics by charging that much for filth. So here are the specifics: - The elevators were slow and creepy. I doubt they have been serviced recently. - The room was gross. It had green carpet from the 70s + tacky wallpaper. The TV barely worked. I had to be sitting in a certain spot for the remote to click. It had about 15 blurry channels. It was like my grandma's house in the 80s. The pillows were lumpy and only half had pillowcases. There was no comforter or blanket, just two sheets and one of those old school brown felt things. The bathroom had not been cleaned maybe ever. The shower curtain was covered in stains. The soap and conditioner dispensers were half full and the shampoo one was empty so it's obvious they didn't check anything in there. The balcony is a joke. Our friend stayed in their "suite" and it was just as small and trashy as our room. (He did have 4 pillowcases though). There were also no robes. I had assumed for $250/night there would be robes. - The maid service was loud and bizarre. In the morning every door on our floor was open, but no staff could be found. I could see people's stuff just sitting out in completely open rooms. We ran back & put up the "Do not disturb" sign on our room. The doors were still open when we returned hours later with still no staff around. - There is also a club on the first floor that may be the trashiest bar I've ever been to. It was smelly, smoky, dirty just so incredibly gross. - There is a random cage full of parakeets in a corner of the hotel. I have no idea why. - I'm shocked there is even one nice review on this place. I was with a large group for a wedding and we came from all over the US from all different backgrounds and we ALL agreed this place was terrible and expensive. This place could easily be on Hotel Hell, Hotel Impossible and/or Bar Rescue. Saint Joseph and Silver Beach are so beautiful and quaint. I can't believe such a dump exists there. read more

Seriously? Two weeks in a row I end up staying at the worst hotels of my life-- both in Michigan. I feel betrayed by Tim Allen and his empty promises. Anyway, I could have overlooked the parrots in the lobby and forgiven the apathetic front desk staff, but when we checked into our room, I knew we were in trouble. The lock on the door had been broken (as in the lock was missing) and the interior lock had been sheared off. I'm not really sure what kind of crime happens in St Joseph Michigan, but it definitely happens in this room. When we complained and asked to switch rooms, we were told that we couldn't and they would just fix it for us. Admittedly, they did install the new locks, however, the whole experience made me a little nervous about the safety of the hotel. Next time I'm splurging at the Holiday Inn. read more

I really wanted to give this place higher ratings but a few issues stopped me from doing so.... The good stuff first: This place is an ideal location. We loved that it was very close to the beach, shops and restaurants. I loved that our room was spacious and the bed was super comfortable. The room was equipped with a microwave and refrigerator. We also took advantage of their fitness center. First negative mark: When I called to make the reservation, for a minute I thought I had the wrong number. The person obviously lacked hospitality and customer service skills. He pretty much just took my information and hung up the phone. I travel a good amount and have stayed in modest hotels and I always get the " We look forward to you staying with us" or something like that. Our conversation was awkward and the last thing he said was "do you want your confirmation number?"-- so informal. Anyway, I did not want this to taint my expectation. Upon arrival to the hotel, the person at the front desk was friendly and welcoming. We felt good about the whole thing and were were not turned off by the physical conditions of the hotel... pretty standard and we felt like we were on vacation. We only stayed for two days, but the first morning we got a knock on our door from the cleaning crew... very early!! We told them we weren't ready yet. I guess that was not the right move because they never came back to clean our room. The last day we were there I couldn't shower... there was no hot water. I waited a while, but it didn't happen... just cold water. I could have given this place 2 stars, but again, we REALLY liked the location and the room was pretty decent... Eeeeek. What. were. we. thinking? My BF and I booked a night at Silver Beach Hotel based on its location and the fact that it is dog-friendly. I really should have listened to the reviews on Trip Advisor. Ooops. First, let me say that the location of this hotel is pretty awesome. Close to the beach, downtown, etc. I also appreciated the mediocre hotel bar, as we couldn't seem to find much nightlife in St. Joe's. That's where the awesome ends. Our room was definitely questionable. Our $313/ night with tax room (it was Labor Day weekend, but ARE YOU SERIOUS!?). For that kind of money, I'd expect 4-5 star hotel accommodations. Not the Silver Beach Hotel. Our balcony was overlooking the bar roof which was scattered with cigarette butts. And then... the air-conditioning. Or should I say lack thereof. We had the A/C on low. Then on high. It just didn't work. We had a fitful night of sleep because it was so freaking hot. And there was no screen on the door, so we didn't really want to leave it open. Angry BF went downstairs at about 3:30 AM, and the guy at the front desk apologetically gave us a fan. From the fitness center. I'm not kidding. One of the Silver Beach Hotel's only saving graces (besides its location) was the fact that after complaining in the morning, we were given a discount. So our room was $200/night. Still ridiculous. This is by far the worst place that I have ever stayed at. The place was nasty, stuff falling off of the walls. The pillows had stains on them. It was so bad that I went to the store and purchased a blanket and my own pillow cover. We had to stay here because it was the only open place anywhere around. I was really disappointed by my stay here. The best thing about the Silver Beach Hotel is the location; very convenient to downtown and to walking trails along the river. But my room was disappointingly small, the furniture was all scuffed pretty badly, the bathroom was awkwardly laid out, and the bed was literally the most uncomfortable bed I've ever slept in. I'm wondering if (hoping) this is due to it being the "internet special" room. The "hot internet deal", incidentally, is only $10 less than the AAA discount, which is in itself is only $10 less than full price. Which brings me to the price. Totally NOT worth the $230. Super rough place. It's all been said in the prior reviews. Staff smoking outside of every entrance 24/7, disorganized check in process. Stayed with my dogs and happily paid up for the pet rooms, but the stains from everyone else's pets had never been addressed and were huge (hula hooped size). Very disappointed. I am an ICU RN and I drove down from Ann Arbor because I have 2 days off. Not able to use the pool because it is closed so we thought the children could watch TV in the late evening. No signal. 40 minutes later a person looks at it. can't fix it. Will send the manager back. 1 hour later, no manager. We ask to change rooms. Sorry, no rooms clean. 33 cars in the lot so the place definitely isn't full. But there are no rooms to change us to, so the person at the desk says. Then she says "you got a deal" as if this justifies bad service. Disrespectful. Its not fancy nor clean, its about location. We booked this hotel for a "steal" at $260+/night. I have to tell you the lobby looks like its been photoshopped in, when compared to the quality of the rooms themselves. Don't believe the hype when you look at their website, its note even close. Paint peeling off the wall, bathroom plumbing seems off (overflows water), sliding screen door doesn't slide and it has giant holes through it, the rooms were pretty tiny, the staff very friendly but sort of low on the customer service side -- its a nightmare of a hotel BUT with a unique location on Silver Beach. If you want to be within walking distance this is about your only option -- I'm sure the owners are well aware of their monopoly status and are taking full advantage of that. All I can say is at some point, every industry gets revitalized (AirBnb) and if you can't compete you will lose eventually. Maybe not for a while -- but its a matter of time. read more

This hotel was a cheap way to stay near the beach but did not have all the amenities you would hope for in a basic hotel. CONS:The maid forgot twice to clean our room. The breakfast is from 6am-9am which means 8-9 is jam packed with families trying to eat. Long lines for the waffle maker sent us out to eat most mornings, plus we like to sleep in on our vacation. The manager never seemed to know where his staff was at any given time and several of the staff were not as professional as you would like to see. An outlet in our room did not work and it seemed pointless to tell them as they had a sign up for a full time handyman. This was more prevalent when the fire alarm went off twice and didn't go off for 15-20minutes with no fire. PROS: Clean comfy bed. Nice cold A/C. Within walking distance of all the fun of St Joseph and the Amtrak. Found a cheap rate on their website directly and all other hotels near them are more than double the price. read more

This place is an absolute dump. I stayed here about four years ago and it was acceptable back then. I don't believe they have invested a DIME into this hotel in over four years. MOLD and BLOOD rampant in our room. Towel rack was rusted. Breakfast food was COLD and they even put a moldy apple out for guests to choose from. One of the two hotels in the area. Our friend got married, and we picked this without looking at reviews: HOTEL DECOR: Hotel was straight out of the 70s. Carpeting looked old, the elevators looked like they belonged in a trendy dance club. Things were clean and well maintained, but I wouldn't consider this a "modern" hotel. ROOM: Room looked dated as well, with the exception of a new TV. Walls looked like they had been clearly painted over. Carpet was an ugly green carpet, that had probably been there for decades. Bathroom was TINY, and felt like walking into a closet. CLEANLINESS: Room and sheets were clean. Bathroom looked old, and had seen better days, but was about as clean as you could get it. They used this lemon smelling cleaner everywhere. It was very strong, and gave the whole hotel a read smell. PRICE: We got a wedding fair, and paid $128 a night. I overheard a phone call saying the nightly cost would be $200 for others. This is not a hotel I would spend more than $100 for. LOCATION: Great location, walking distance to the beach. However, location is on par with the other competitors hotel in the "downtown" area. OVERALL: Very dated, tacky hotel. Definitely not worth the cost, but I think they can get away with it due to the location. We would not stay here again, and would stay at the other downtown hotel. read more

During a pandemic you'd think a hotel might put some effort into cleaning. Not this one. Our room was filthy. Counters crusty, with hair from previous guests strewn around. Stained pillows. Stained mattresses with no bedbug barrier. The more you look the grosser it gets. Our beds were made with sheets on top of the comforter. But at least we had sheets. A family we were traveling with got to their room and had no sheets and party leis from the previous guests laying about. The desk informed them they didn't think they had any more sheets. There is also a very loud, crowded bar packed with drunk people with no masks. People crowded into the elevators with no masks as well. You have to work to find the cobweb-filled stairwell behind the mildewy pool, but it beats the coronavirus elevator. read more

My stay here is a lesson to research before booking. I am shocked by the discrepancies between how this hotel promotes itself on line and it's actual state of neglect. This place is a dump. It's been neglected and it's nasty. Crummy toilet seats, carpeting and common area furniture does not invite you to sit down on it. Better to pay a little more at another hotel in town that is true to it's high end star rating. It gets better. On my last, I get a note under my door that there's no water from midnight to 6am. I shower before bed but wake up the next morning wanting to brush my teeth and wash my face. You guessed it, no water at 6:30am. We always stay here. It's not a 5 star hotel, but it's walking distance to the shops and restaurants and we have never had an issue with cleanliness. The kids love the pool and my wife loves the hot tub. My girls are 6 and 8, so we usually walk to the beach. I will start with the "pros" and there are many. We have stayed at the Silver Beach Hotel many times before. We asked for and received a river/lake side room. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Each day if we needed anything and asked the hotel staff it was quickly provided! We would put out the "house keeping service needed" sign on the door every other day for a refill on coffee and clean towels. We were on the 7th floor - one of the floors already renovated. Even though the furniture was the same, the walls and carpet and bathroom were updated. The beds were very comfortable and clean. And the location cannot be beat. The prices are competitive - if not much lower than motels in the surrounding area. Breakfast is always appreciated - fresh and hot. Now if you want to complain there will always be some things to gripe about. But our stay of 10 days was very nice - our 'home away from home' - as we visited our home town and friends and family. read more

Horrible experience!!! Where do I start?!? I guess I'll start upon my immediate entry into the hotel lobby to check in upon arriving. There were three women at the front desk conversing about personal matters that were not meant for my ears and the woman closest to me was smoking!!! She seemed shocked that I was standing there and tried to conceal the cigarette, but the damage was done. Once inside the room, we noticed that it was dirty. For the first time ever, we found it absolutely necessary to clean and sanitize everything! I'm not one to call and complain, so we decided to make the best of it. We spent some time and cleaned the room up to make it as comfortable as possible. Once the toilet was cleaned, the short hairs removed, and the "change" in the bowl from the last occupants was flushed, we went out for dinner. Once we returned, we could hear music. We could all hear the bass booming over the volume of our in room television. We thought it was coming from the adjacent room; therefore, we decided to ignore it. However, it didn't stop! For several hours it continued to bump. We realized that it was coming from the hotel bar. It was the DJ. I called the front desk asking if we could be moved into another room. I was told that the hotel was sold out and there was nothing that could be done. We tried to put our kids to bed and it proved impossible with the bass reverberating inside our room. Our 2 year old was asking us what the noise was! He and his brother were wide awake asking us to provide some quiet as they laid down for bed. I called down to the front desk again asking for a solution and was told the same thing. There was nothing that they could do for us. I asked to be refunded for the room. As you can imagine, we were not willing to stay under these circumstances a moment longer. We were denied a refund. I asked for a manager, I was told there was no manager available. I asked for the name of a manager and was continuously deflected away from my request. That has never happened! Over the past 10 years, we have stayed in this hotel many times, only to return again. Unfortunately, we will never return as long as this hotel is being operated by this management, or lack thereof. I stayed at this place a number of times for a number of years. Looks like it has finally degraded to hovel status. While I like the charm of 70's hotels, I do not like the 'city view' which half of the rooms view from the balcony. I've put in requests to have a beach side view, tried to change rooms, but after nearly a dozen visits I have never had a beach side room. So be prepared to watch patrons of the liquor store across the street from your balcony. The bar is open late and has a pool table. Can't say much more. read more

I am giving this hotel a higher review than I thought I would. I got a block of rooms for my wedding on August 1st. The entire process of blocking off rooms was a nightmare and this hotel was no exception. As St. Joe is a tourist area it was hard to find a place that would even block off rooms. Regardless, we blocked off 15 rooms. We got a notice saying we had filled our block so we requested to add a second... But it wasn't so simple. Getting ahold of ANYONE was ridiculously impossible. Leia, the manager, was the only person who could open room blocks and we called nine days in a row to speak with her and kept being by told to call back tomorrow. Once we were finally contacted and given an extra block we only had about 9 days for people to fill it. Yikes! Luckily the prices of rooms dropped a bit so guests who still needed to book after the block closed didn't pay much more, we honestly did not receive much of a price break anyways. Before the wedding we were really worried that there were going to be major issues with our out of town guests at check in because of the disorganized feel we got while planning but everything worked out without any issues. All in all, you are paying for the area- if you want a nice room, this really isn't the place for you. We had a great group of people in town for our wedding: the front desk people were all so nice and even handed out welcome bags to our guests and we enjoyed the little bar in the hotel- run down but fun is where you make it (our Chicago guests loved the prices there too) The nice staff is why we opted for the four star. If I needed to stay here again I would; but if you are planning to get a block just make sure you do so in advance because communication is not managements strong point here. read more

This hotel was horrible! I booked it thinking I was getting a really good deal at $240 a night based on the rates of the other hotels. This place is a dump! We pulled up and there was NO parking for guests because bar patrons had taken all of the parking. We were told that we could park across the street in a restaurants parking lot, or come back after 10pm and it should clear out a bit by then. After we finally found a place to park, walking up to the hotel, there were young adults hanging out on the balconies yelling at people. After we got to the room, it got worse! The bed was the most uncomfortable bed, I think the floor would have been more comfortable, but I was scared to even walk on it. The tub was dirty, and everything was old! We checked out the next day, I couldn't stand it anymore. Overall, it was just a bit methy looking. I think a crack den may have been better! read more

I was traveling in the area and this was the first place I seen when I left the beach for a room so I stopped. I have a single bed/single person and it was $85.00+ tax. The room is clean, a little dated, and had some small cosmetic issues that may bother some. The tub had rust stains around the drain and the drain in the bathroom sink is cracked and unappealing. I do have a balcony with a great view of Lake Michigan, and the building is only a couple blocks from the beach. Bed is comfortable and there is a Keurig coffee maker which is easy. read more

No hot water in my room! Moved me to another room that had a " jacuzzi tub" with one of six jets working. There was no power cord fore the tv, the front desk guy who smelled like he had not bathed in moths, and was not wearing a mask, proceeded to make me walk from one half empty room to another looking for a power cord that matched at 11:00pm. When I suggested just give me one of these TVs he said he couldn't do that. I was literally the only guest in 150+ hotel. There was only ice the first floor, and you had to tread through a huge leak in lobby, water was everywhere and the all three of the vending machines were out of order. The "bar & grill" was shut down by the health department.. almost forgot!! The first impression was a police officer asking to speak to the manager so he could get the surveillance video he had been looking since 10/10/2020, two month and 13 before I checked in. Nothing like being constantly frustrated by the people you pay to provide comfort. Then on the second night there was a fire.... yes A FIRE! Only the alarm didn't sound on all my floor. I did hear it below, and the power was out. I ran down the six smoke filled floors and out in to the snow and went to another hotel. Merry Christmas to me! This place is a dump! read more

My family and I had a girls trip this past weekend, all of us are all healthcare workers (Emergency department, surgical, and COVID unit) and worked hard throughout this pandemic, and this was our first time getting out and escaping the insanity of the pandemic. When we got there, the lady said I wanted to let you know that St. Joseph has a scheduled power outage for tonight between midnight and six in the morning. We found out yesterday at 3 pm." Curiously, we asked why there was no email sent out, no phone call, nothing. Not going to lie, that was kind of annoying. It was 95 degrees that day, and to find out that we weren't going to have air for the night, or to be able to put our food in the fridge was disappointing. It was 95 degrees sunny on the westside of Michigan, EVERY hotel in a 30-mile radius was sold out. We had nowhere to go. How do you not have a generator? Coming from a social justice point of view, what about people who are handicapped? They can't access the elevator. What if there was an emergency? The lady said we could put our things in a king-size room while we are at the beach and when we get back our room should be available, and that they will give us an upgraded room for the inconvenience. "We called to let them know that we were on our way and Sammy (the owner Ramsey's son) answered the phone and he was SO RUDE to us. We get back to the hotel and get our "upgraded room" and the door is broken, we cannot close it, the patio door is broken, trash is all over the floor, cigarette butts, party cups, etc. all on the patio. There was dog hair and someone's leftovers in the fridge. The phone did not have any cords to it, we pulled the night and out to see if there were any cords, there was trash, tissues, lipstick all behind the nightstand. I walked downstairs, and of course, there's Sammy at the desk. I politely asked him if I could please speak to Kristen the GM. He said, "I'm the manager up here, so you need to talk to me." I said, "actually I don't. I would rather talk to Kristen whom I've been dealing with all day, thanks." He throws his hands up in the air, and rolls his eyes and goes in the back to get her. Kristen (GM) walked upstairs with me to our room, and she cried. You could tell she truly cared. Kristen walked me down to get keys to a different room. As I'm waiting for the keys, I hear Sammy yelling are another customer and saying "ma'am I need you to stand behind this plastic glass, we need to take precautions for COVID." I looked over and was like "why? You're not even wearing your mask? Are you that concerned? Your attitude is disgusting and the way you yell at your customers is ridiculous."  I looked at Kristen & said, "is your owner here?" The owner, Ramsey comes out and pulls us to his office and says "what's the problem, bring your sister down here too." My sister again carried all of our luggage down seven flights of stairs and came into his office. Ramsey refuses to believe us when we tell him that HIS elevators are NOT working. He said, "elevators work fine." We told him a courtesy call/email informing customers that there will be no power for 7 hours would have been nice. Ramsey says "that's beyond my control, there's nothing I can do. What do you want?" I said, "Woah, I want you to listen. No need for you to be rude to me, I just want you to listen. How do you not have generators for emergencies?" He replies, "I would have to get permits and I don't have that time. Plus, everyone should be asleep." I said, "this is our vacation, I don't think it's appropriate to assume that your guest should be asleep during the night." He kept cutting me off and saying "it's fine. What do you want?" It was very irritating because honestly, I just wanted someone to listen to the experience we've had thus far. He said, "what do you want? Do you want the floor to yourself? You want six rooms for yourself?" With a confused face, I replied, "no, Ramsey. I just want you to listen again, fuck. Why can't you just listen to me? Your son and you are both rude. Your son is so worried about customers stepping behind the plastic glass when he  DIDN'T even have HIS MASK ON. WHAT THE FUCK?! How do you not see that your customer service is a problem?" He said, "again, what do you want?" (Still no apology). I said, "well now I want an apology from you & your son, & I want my whole night covered. Ramsey (owner) said "my son gets hot okay? He doesn't need to be wearing his mask the whole time. These are difficult times." I stopped him right there and said, "YOUR SON GETS HOT? You're absolutely right, it's 95 degrees out, imagine how HOT YOUR GUESTS ARE GOING TO BE TONIGHT WITHOUT AIR. Fuck that, then he should not care is people are not previously behind the plastic glass." Ramsey said, "we are not covering your night stay, I'll cover 50% because you're trying to rob us.
