I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Silver Cloud Hotel in Ruston, and by "pleasure," I mean a full-contact endurance experience. Let's start with the parking lot, which appears to have been designed exclusively for clown cars or perhaps very optimistic compact vehicles. If you're driving anything larger than a shoebox, prepare for a thrilling game of "will this fit," followed by a graceful 17-point turn. The rooms are described as comfortable, which I assume is hospitality code for "cozy if you don't inhale too deeply." Spacious is not a word I would use unless we are comparing it to a broom closet. Now, if you enjoy saunas but wish they came without consent, you're in luck. My heater was stuck at a steady 78 degrees day and night, turning my room into a tropical retreat I never asked for. To their credit, they did move me... to a room where I could enjoy the next feature. Trains. Loud, proud, earth-shaking trains. All day. All night. Not "in the distance" trains, but "is there a locomotive in my hallway" trains. If you've ever wanted to feel like you're sleeping directly on a railroad track, this is your moment. There is technically a water view, which sounds lovely until you realize the parking lot sits right below your window. So when you open the blinds, you're not just enjoying the scenery, you're starring in it. Breakfast was... ambitious. I would have gladly paid extra for something edible, or at least something that didn't feel like it lost a fight with a microwave. After working a very long night, I thought maybe, just maybe, there'd be a small gesture of goodwill like a late checkout. Instead, I was told they had 68 checkouts that day, which apparently made flexibility impossible. No apology, no acknowledgment of the sauna experience, no effort to make it right. Just a firm "time to go." All things considered, I'd rate this stay somewhere between a 1 and a 2 out of 5. I won't be returning, and consider this your friendly warning: if you stay here, bring a small car, earplugs, and a strong sense of humor. read more

I had a lovely stay here! I booked a king room snd got upgraded to a suite with a lovely view. The check in staff was very kind and helpful and went out of their way to make me feel safe and welcome. I am so grateful for them. My room was clean, spacious, and had a stunning view! I love that they also have a boardwalk around the hotel where I could walk and get even more of the view in. The bed was comfortable, the tvs were large, and I loved how many outlets and lamps there were. I would definitely stay here again! Parking was $16 a night, which seems pretty standard. I took an Uber here and was happy how close it was to restaurants. It was an easy Uber into town, and is located in a safe part of Tacoma. Overall, a wonderful experience! I will be back! read more

Rooms spacious, clean, and freshly renovated. Fridge and microwave came in handy. Air conditioning outlet is weirdly near the floor instead of up high. Very noisy, possibly intentionally to save electricity? When compressor turns on it was startling and will wake me up during the night. Would have preferred to have the windows open but there's a lot of street noise from car/motorcycle enthusiasts who rev their engines or have loud exhaust systems. Also, the windows could only be opened about two inches. Many long freight trains each hour, even during the dead of night. Fortunately, they don't sound their horns at the nearby crossing. They do rumble by, but if the windows are closed you barely hear them. Breakfast was OK. I think those were powdered eggs. Sausages really good, bacon very salty. However, the coffee was outstanding! The best coffee of four hotels on this trip to the Pacific Northwest. Staff very pleasant. I would consider staying here again, especially if I could get a room at the back of the building. Confirmation e-mail included no indication that I prepaid for parking, but there was no issue when I checked-in. However, prior to arrival here I kept wasting time looking for evidence that this was taken care of. I didn't want there to be some dispute over my recollection. Seems like they could fix this in their reservation system. This is compounded by the fact that the room rates over our 3 night stay varied by almost $100.00 high-to-low. read more

Nice hotel with comfortable beds. My room overlooked the water and Mt Ranier which was beautiful. Room was very clean and had an iron and ironing board, but no hairdryer which I thought was odd. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash were fragranced and in tiny bottles which were hard to squeeze and wasteful. The bar was nice as were the bartenders but the food menu had overly complicated meals. I ended up just getting Brussels sprouts which were good but after a long day of travel, I was hoping for something basic yet delicious. The only other downside was the bar closed at 10pm and I was there for a conference so it was hard to socialize with folks since the bar closed so early. Not a whole lot of activities or shops in the immediate area and no public transportation. read more

First visit at this location. It was my husbands birthday and I wanted to treat him to a 'staycation'. I must say - My expectations were exceeded. There are other waterfront locations that cost a bit more, and I was a little skeptical about this location due to its age, but once we entered the room all of the skepticism left and we had huge smiles on our face. I let the reservations team know it was my husbands birthday in advance, and the staff left a note and candy on the bed for him. I thought this was such a kind and thoughtful gesture. Room Type: Deluxe Jacuzzi Suite Corner Suite The VIEWS!!!!! - Breathtaking *note - this was not a bother to us - however the waterfront and the hotel runs parallel to the train. You will hear the siren (no crossing alert) a few times but it lasts seconds. Complimentary Breakfast in the morning was nice - area was clean and fully stocked- coffee was on point ! I don't think I had a single complaint about this place. It's rated as 3 stars but definitely feels more luxurious than that. Rooms are very clean, front desk staff is helpful, and hotel is proximal to many things in the area. Price is great for what you get too. Miss it already! read more

We went to Tacoma to attend a funeral. When I made reservations they ask me if we were in town for a special occasion. I I explained why we were coming. I explained other out of towners would be staying there. When my daughter checked in they put her family next to our room. Then as others arrived they booked them all on our floor. It was wonderful. We would all meet in the lobby and play games and cards. They were so nice. It made a hard situation easier for all of us. The rooms were great. So clean and the breakfast wow! We've thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Silver Cloud in Tacoma, and we will definitely book again next time we are in town. I can't imagine how hard it must be to run a hotel during a pandemic, but Kim and her team here at the Silver Cloud are working so hard to make everyone safe and comfortable! We feel very well looked after. Kim even made sure I had enough to eat for breakfast, which had to modified due to COVID precautions, so no more buffet. I'm on a strict gluten-free diet and Kim took care of me. Now all pre-packaged cereal, boiled eggs, yogurt, fruit, coffee, and juice that are safely delivered by Kim and her staff 6:30-10:00 with gloves, masks, and social distancing lines. The horns of the frequently passing freight trains did take some getting used to, and the fitness center is closed due to COVID, but otherwise it's all good. We're enjoying a great stay and will surely return! read more

Not sure what was going on in Tacoma, but the $400/night was hurtful. But beyond the price why would I avoid coming back? The rooms- they are nice and recently, generally, updated. The views are quite nice as well. The staff- pleasant and efficient. The breakfast- like the free courtyard breakfast. If you need some calories and want to focus on make your own waffle- have at it. Then it drops away- Parking- I am not sure what is worse- the nightly fee or that they only have half the stalls they think as most people had to park in 2 spots as the 6 foot compact spot didn't allow you to open your door and there are pillars every 3rd stall Get ready to go dukes of hazard and crawl out a window if you have to enter the covered parking area to park. Then there is the train- if you get an eastern facing room, I think the odd numbered rooms, get ready to hear the train horn at the crossing across the street every 20-30 minutes every night. At 1am, I had to dig out my earplugs which I hadn't needed to use in 100+ hotel nights in the last 4 years. So...for the rate I wouldn't return. 250? Maybe. But I would never stay on the eastern facing no matter the rate. So unless they could guaranty that, I wouldn't return. read more

What a wonderful stay we had at the Silver Cloud Inn. Just so lovely, and our favorite sleeping spot so far on our fall road trip in the Pacific Northwest. We were greeted with a friendly and helpful staff who gave us local tips for eating out and all the information we needed. The view of the bay from our suite and the sound of crashing waves were just like heaven on earth. The suite was spacious with a separate sitting area and faux fireplace for cozy ambiance. Lots of fluffy pillows and a comfy mattress gave us a good night's sleep after a long day of sightseeing. The complimentary breakfast was delicious and offered a beautiful view of the water. A wonderful way to start the day! If we ever find ourselves in Tacoma again, we will be staying at the Silver Cloud! read more

When we decided to cancel a family vacation due to covid, we booked this Silver Cloud Inn as a mini-retreat (relatively) close to home. While it wasn't Maui, this hotel has gorgeous views of the harbor and surrounding area. We booked a jacuzzi suite and scored a third floor corner room. I highly recommend springing the extra money for the jacuzzi tub. I used it every day we were there, including the morning of check out. It's a luxurious soak with killer views. We were pleasantly surprised at how well the housekeepers cleaned the tub and our room while we were visiting. It was spotless upon return from our daily activities. COVID protocols are in place and the fitness center is closed. Breakfast, thankfully, was not a free-for-all. Instead, a masked attendant took your order and gave it to you all pre-packaged. One morning my husband and I each had a gourmet breakfast sandwich with sausage or bacon, cheese, and eggs on a brioche bun from a local bakery, Yami yogurt, and orange juice. The breakfast was a cut above what we were used to at mid-level hotels. First, the small qualms: there's nowhere for two people to sit and eat in the room (easily remedied by an additional chair or fold down/moveable table), limited cable channels, and the nooks and crannies on the outside of the shower not usually seen could have used a deep clean. Lastly, the things we loved: the amazing views, the automatic shades that closed with the press of a button, glass front fridge, cleanliness of the room, the Aveda toiletries, easy parking, friendly front desk staff, covid safety protocols, every guest wearing a mask, excellent housekeeping, proximity to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and historic neighborhoods, bathrobes, and a super comfortable bed. There was also a small loofah and bath salts with extra towels waiting for us at the jacuzzi. (Pro tip: bring your own Epsom salts and/bubble bath for an epic soak.) I'd like to return. But I'd also like to go to Maui. If I decided to do another staycation in the area, this is where I'd go! read more

The only reason I am giving one star is, as we all know, Yelp requires a ranking prior to your review. The Silver Cloud Inn - Honey, don't let the pictures fool you. Most clouds have a silver lining, unless you stay at the Silver Cloud Inn. My sig other and I stayed here Friday April 30, 2021 - we drove from Lake Oswego, Oregon to come up due to a death in the family. When we arrived the "parking lot" was full, it was after 11:00 pm.(Don't drive anything large because the spots are narrow and the covered parking area, under the hotel, is very low) As we were checking in.......... a train, ACROSS the street, began to go pass. Very loud, very long, and oh my gosh are you kidding me right now? I asked the front desk as we were checking in - "Does that come often and will we hear it from our room? I was told by a "manager acting" person "It doesn't really and no, you will not hear it. But just in case we will move to the room furthest from the front of the hotel." The employee to her right said "That train is the bain of our existence." "What???? What does that mean???? It's late, I am tired, we had a death in our family what do you mean the bain of your existence?" I asked The employee responded with- "Oh, I am just kidding, it's not that bad." That train came on the hour, almost to the hour all night long. We could not open our window in the room, nor would we want to due to the sound from the wonderful train tracks and train raging every hour, but if we did we could as the room was over the parking area so you could smell the car fumes instead of "the sea air" advertised. The rooms are older, so you can hear people in the halls, yes this hotel has people in the halls (loudly) at late hours. The halls smelled like weed, which I am not opposed to if it is good weed. Needless to say, we did not sleep nor did we stay. I had originally booked us for TWO nights. I called at 6:30 am to the front desk of Saturday May 1st and told them due to the train we are checking out early and not to charge my card for two nights. I was told that was no problem and they were sorry for the inconvenience. Guess what? They charged me for the two nights. I have called this hotel and left messages for someone to call me to refund the one night I did not stay, really they should refund me for the entire stay since we got in so late and we didn't sleep - but whatever. Has anyone called me back, has there been a refund, a letter, an email, a messenger pigeon? No. Do NOT stay here, unless you like trains and the sound of them being right next to you, unless you drive a clown car because the parking lot is small and the spots are smaller, and only if you want to get a contact high walking in the halls. Everything good about this inn is negated by the trains that are across the street and blow their whistles 10-12 times as they pass by. All night long. It's the BNSF railroads. It's one thing to feel the vibrations but the whistles wake you up, and the next train is 10 minutes behind. The hotel should divulge this information on the website. I've stayed here twice in 2 years. The staff is always friendly and the rates are pretty good. They offer a free buffet breakfast which is quite good and plentiful. Beds are comfortable. One of the best hotels I've stayed in! Staff were incredibly friendly and thoughtful. We stayed here for one night on a very busy holiday weekend and everyone we met was kind and helpful. Room was very clean and well stocked with essentials. Continental breakfast had all the fixings and staff quickly rotated through to wipe down tables as people left and refilled food stations. The dining area fills up quickly so you might not get a table, but if you wait a minute or two in the side chairs, one should clear up for you as people are trying to get on with their day. If you are not familiar with this type of set up, everyone busses their own tables so others can use the area, too :). Would stay again if given the opportunity. read more

I have stayed here several times. Always a pleasure. The young man who checked me in was wonderful. I have health issues and can't stand or walk long. He let me sit and came around the counter to hand me my keys. The only unfortunate part of this visit was the elevator was not working and I had to take a bottom floor room which I've never done. Needless to say where I was situated really effected my view which is one of the reasons for my visit. Other than that the breakfast buffet was good - my first time. Nice and quiet. Beware of the TRAIN! We stayed here last summer with absolutely no issues but it's now January and it's 2:04am. I'm with my toddler who can't stop talking about the train which is has blaring through with its horn on full blast through the very close by intersection every single hour. It's a living hell. I get the impression it's an intermittent issue with this hotel's location. Don't take the risk. The hotel is great other than that huge issue. We originally had booked a room that had a view of the pier but wanted to have a better view so they gave us a room higher in the building with a beautiful view. They served a breakfast in a bag so you could eat it in the room. You pick out things that you would want to eat and a girl puts it in a bag. One thing missing was a tip jar for her, but we tipped her anyway. We will definitely come back. read more

Great place to stay while visiting Tacoma. The rooms were clean, the beds comfortable and the bathroom was big enough that my wife & I didn't rub up on each other every time our paths crossed. The small kitchenette was the perfect area to heat up any left overs or prepare a snack for the kids. The location was just a short distance from anything you might want to do and the view was spectacular. The complimentary breakfast was perfect to get your day going. The staff was excellent, courteous and helpful. Will definitely come back when in Tacoma. Almost forgot to mention about the onsite parking which is very convenient. WOW! I am in awe still from this hotel and it's BEAUTIFUL views. My boyfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights and it was AMAZING. It's located right on the beach and it's surrounded by some yummy restaurants, one of them being Harbor Lights. This was the perfect place for a "staycation" during this rona season. I definitely recommend this hotel if you're looking for a place on the beach where you can walk & enjoy the beautiful views Washington has to offer. read more

Spent a belated birthday weekend here. Wonderful hotel. The bed was so spacious and soft. (I wanted to bring the mattress home!) Beautiful views of the bay, convenient to downtown. The $16 parking rate was a great option. We loved the complimentary breakfast with a lot of choices and spacious eating area. But the best part about it was the hotel is PET-FREE!!! I go out of my way to look for these kind of hotels.
