I called in to request a refund bc I took one bite and immediately had to spit it out and throw it away. I don't understand how they can give someone bananas that are obviously rotted. They said they would request a refund and took my info and then never got back to me. So then I sent a polite email to the manager and no one ever got back to me!!! I was going to refrain from writing this review bc I go to silver diner and have never had a problem but this was just terrible customer service!!! The lady I spoke to on the phone couldn't care less that someone could of gotten really sick from this meal. She literally said to me so what would you like me to do? Tl;dr - after way too many visits to make a four-year-old's day, 4 stars for food, 0 stars for service. Long version: We have been coming here monthly on the same weekday night - my four-year-old loves this place. Nearly every time we come, there is a service issue despite it being 50-75% full. One time we were seated and clearly never had a server assigned to us - we finally had to flag down a manager to take our order, and then we had no further attention once we received our food. It's more common than not to never receive drink refills, whether water or soda. Getting our food served is also typically a slow venture - one time we spent an hour and a half there from being seated to leaving. (at a diner!) My kid usually wants to get a milkshake, but we almost always run out of time because it is too late in the evening by the time we get our plates cleared. I've worked in a restaurant, I'm quite sympathetic to restaurant staff, and despite shoddy service we always tip 15-20%. But this is a bigger problem than just a server having an off night. I don't know if it's a staffing issue, a kitchen issue, or something else. I've really calmly talked to managers there several times (they are always apologetic and sometimes even have given us vouchers for free meals without us asking), but nothing has changed. Finally, my daughter even got annoyed at the wait at our last visit when it took us half an hour to get our food. (All the tables around us were also clearly annoyed about something or other.) Maybe now we will be blessedly relieved that she stops asking to go here! It's a shame, because the food is better than average diner food, and we do actually enjoy the food when it finally gets to our table. But I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will no longer be her favorite restaurant and we can have a looong break from going here. read more

Had dinner here Tuesday afternoon, solo, so I could do some reading. It took a while for the host to stop talking to coworkers and take care of me, and I asked for a quiet booth. I was seated right next to a table where Silver Diner was hosting "kid's night". Great. Service was slow and when I ordered a well done steak, it came cooked medium; but when I mentioned it to my server she gave me a blank stare. I did not see anyone around who looked old enough to be a manager, so didn't push the point. So much for the "100 % guarantee" advertised on each table, (which only refunds you 10% off your bill). The turkey chili seemed to have been put in a blender, giving it an unexpected and unappetizing consistency of baby food. Fortunately, this chain serves great desserts, so the Apple pie a la mode helped saved the meal. But, I was forced to leave half of my steak uneaten. Their Laurel location closed recently and I can certainly understand why. Stick to breakfast and desserts and you won't be disappointed. Entrees are sketchy in my opinion. read more

I can't believe some of the reviewers here calling this place "not a real diner", "just ok" or that its a "chain" and therefore not as good. Nuts! I spent a couple days camping in nearby Greenbelt Park and stopped there with my buddy one morning on the way to pick up a local friend. We were starving from not having eaten dinner the night before and we shuffled in, unshaven and looking all sorts of ornery (it had snowed overnight with temps just below freezing). We walked in and I admit, at first I wasn't thrilled with how the place looked. It was clean - spotless even - but it looked like they were trying too hard to make it look like a diner. It looked fake, you know. "No matter", we said as we sat down, "we came for food and food alone." And what food it was. All I can say it GRITS GRITS GRITS! The best grits I've ever had! The omelets were light, fluffy and full of stuffings. The pancakes were also light - not heavy balls of batter. Teh scrambled eggs were cooked just right. The whole grain toast was toothy and flavorful - not your regular sliced white bread. Sausage and bacon not overly greasy and not overcooked to the point of cardboard. What else... the orange juice was fresh squeezed and the coffee was just the right temperature and not overly bitter. The milkshakes were thick and tasty. Their style of using local food (some organic) paid off - definitely not just for the tofu crowd. This was hearty food to fill the belly! How did we eat this all in one sitting you ask? We didn't. We liked the place so much we went back two more times that weekend, and each time was a delight. Friendly staff who joked with us and prompt service. Granted, it wasn't a packed house (8:30am each time) but they were attentive without being overbearing. Very nice experience. As to the decor, it turns out they modeled the place after a true, original 50s diner (I can't remember where it was from). From the overall layout down to the small details they stayed true to the style. And they had mini jukeboxes at each table! who cares if they have more than one location. If its done right, its done right. Not all chains are created equal. You can bet that if I'm ever back in the area - or on the way to DC - I will definitely stop by the Silver Diner again. I am giving this a five-star review because there is no option to go any higher. This place is the best! Farm to table dining, working juke boxes, fantastic customer service, convenience to UMD. This is the place to go when I want to treat myself with my boyfriend, siblings, parents, etc. At this point I have probably tried half of their menu. Lamb burgers, pesto burgers, any of their burgers- fantastic. Great bread pudding, sweet potato fries...I'm getting hungry thinking about it. And the servers are incredibly friendly. Not your typical worn-out, disgruntled diner worker- they will smile and joke with you and be very attentive to your needs. Definitely sign up for their email list. I love coming to Silver Diner! Delicious food, friendly service and family oriented resturant. My family and I come atleast once a week & I love that there is something on the menu for everyone. Although I come here so often, I always go for something new on the menu. There is a nice selection to choose from. From milkshakes to mimosas, from burgers to vegan options. On my last visit, I had the Salmon and Lentils, it literally taste like heaven! My husband ordered the Sliders and was very pleased as well. I haven't found another resturant that has tastier chicken noodle soup than Silver Diner. They are very focused on their customer service and are always making sure every customer is happy. I will never go back to this Diner again. I ordered a hot chocolate to start off with and when I got it it was made with water instead of milk where do they do that at!!!! It was so tasteless I sent it back. I have been to the Greenbelt location of this chain diner restaurant about 6 times and while the health conscious / often locally sourced menu is exciting and the portion size generous I sadly cannot say the same positive things about the service in the restaurant. In plain English the service sucks and as someone who prides himself on being a generous tipper I will admit for the first time in a long time I didn't bother to leave one. When I arrived at the diner 2 of the four servers were hanging out in their hangout spot in the back of the restaurant near the restrooms. 2 of those very same servers made eye contact with me standing at the door and turned their back to me to continue to socialize. After previous service encounters at this location I came equipped this time and I started the stopwatch on my iPhone to chronicle each contact with a diner employee with a new tap of the lap button. Times are rounded down (if you can believe it I had to round down because the time were so unbelievable). After 4 minutes standing in the doorway of diner that is nearly deserted at 3 o'clock in the afternoon the person wearing the "Manager" shirt emerged from behind the counter and seated me in a booth. 3 minutes after that Douglas my so called server emerged from his social call with his coworkers to take my order. Now imagine this I have been in this diner for almost 10 minutes, a section of the booths is closed and there are only 4 other parties seated. It shouldn't take 10 minutes to get a cup of iced tea that was brewed last week with a mildewed rag for the filter while 4 servers stand around chatting. Sadly it did take 10 minutes to get exactly this cup of ice cold unpleasantness in my mouth. Maybe I wouldn't have noticed if i had filled the cup with sweetener or tablespoons of sugar but that is indeed the point of unsweetened ice tea isn't it? I mean how much does it cost to brew a fresh pot of tea everyday instead of waiting days for it to spoil unrefrigerated on a counter? That has to be a health code violation. In any case I ordered some sweet potato fries as a starter and the mango stir fry for my meal. The sweet potato fries came to me only slightly cooler than the tepid "wasabi sauce" that came in the cup on the side. I dare to say room temperature would have been warmer. I picked over the fries while I waited for the server to stop flirting with his coworkers long enough to trade my mildew tea for something more predictable like a diet coke while I waited for my mango stir fry to come out. I did not see hide nor hair of Douglas the no tip earning server so I located the silverware in the host stand for myself and took two sets so I could have a napkin to wipe my fingers with for my appetizer and a backup for my entree. Good thing I did because Douglas couldn't be bothered. The stir fry was good but again delivered to the table cold so I am not exactly convinced that they actually cook food in in this diner. I am envisioning something that is previously prepared in a bag stored in the cooler and then poured ever so slowly onto a cold plate 45 minutes after it is ordered. Stir fry usually have veggies that are lightly cooked. These were raw, so it was kinda like a raw food salad over wheat pasta. Good ingredients but it just wasn't prepared at all. i have to throw this in because this was the final slap in the face. But Douglas did finally bring extra napkins to my table at the end of my meal. Napkins that had been on another parties table and were splashed with either marinara sauce or blood (you choose). Douglas must have noticed the look of disgust on my face as I was staring at these recycled napkins that he carelessly plopped on my table. He then slyly grabbed the splattered napkin off the top of the stack. And that as they say concluded my eating venture at Silver Diner Greenbelt forever. Total service time one and a quarter hours (rounded down) for a table of one! Or about the same amount of time it takes to slaughter an animal, cook, eat and clean up after wards. Sadly everything I ate was vegetarian fare so I suppose the underwhelmed kitchen was waiting for the mushrooms on top of the cooler to finish growing before making my meal. All in all I have had better service and actually cooked meals at the location in Laurel so I would not totally write off this chain. But for certain the Greenbelt location is a joke, staffed by bottom shelf cooks, worse service and apathetic management. They have lost my business forever as I have already filled out a survey and been contacted by a customer service manager who did NOTHING to correct the problems at this location. I'm sorry folks their are better places to eat in the area, this is not one of them. read more

I don't understand why people would eat at this chain restaurant when the area boasts real diners! This place is heavy on the kitsch (neon, jukeboxes, paper hats) and light on the things that make real diners good (cheap food, lots of specials). If you really want diner food, skip this place and hit Plato's or the College Park Diner on Route 1. They're open longer hours, have more interesting menus, and definitely deliver on what I expect from a diner! I'd peg Silver Diner as a family restaurant with a diner motif. The menu is full of American standards, breakfast dishes and burgers and "blue plate" entrees like meatloaf and crab cakes - nothing special. And each section of the menu is a little brief, lacking much variety or imagination. They seem to offer the most diversity in their dessert selection of pies, cakes, and shakes. The restaurant looks like every other Silver Diner, decorated in carefully calculated "vintage diner" decor. Each booth has a jukebox loaded with oldies, though many of these will eat your quarters without dispensing any Buddy Holly or Roy Orbison. The service can be slow, but I've had no major issues. Once or twice, they've been out of certain dishes and waited to tell me until a little while after I ordered, expecting me to come up with a replacement without a menu. The Silver Diner is a decent place to take a large group, because they have plenty of tables and the menu probably has something for everyone. But it isn't open particularly late, and it lacks the charms of a real diner. read more

The hostess told us there will be a 5 min wait and then put our name on the list. A couple walks in for table of 2 and got seated right away. Then moments later another couple walks in for table of 2 and got seated right away. We were just like... wtf how are they getting seated right away when we came before them. This particular SD has the worse food I have ever eaten at a diner! I wrote to the owners about my bad lunch experience then the bad dinner experience and they apologized and were very nice about it. I decided it was probably due to a few off days in the restaurant, but I was wrong. I went there with my 10 yr old and he ordered pancakes and a side of bacon, I ordered eggs, ham steak, and toast. The pancakes were so bad (I took a bite and it tasted like shredded cardboard) he could not eat more than his first bite! The bacon and the ham steak tasted gamey, the eggs were small but tasted like eggs. The toast was run of the mill, yet tasteless. I cannot speak for their shakes and desserts, but they call "food" is something I have never tasted nor ever will eat again from any Silver Diner. This is my third visit to this Silver Diner and the experience has been the same: excellent food, sluggish service. If I'm paying $18 for a salad I expect the server to be attentive. I understand waiting for food to be prepared once I order, but waiting a long time to order, then waiting for drinks, then waiting for the check is not fun. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE.. And I love silver diner. I used to live in Laurel and ordered breakfast from them every weekend, the food was always awesome and the service was great. Having recently moved to greenbelt, I was excited there was a silver diner down the street, wow was I WRONG! I called to place my order and they were extremely unprofessional, asking me in a disgusted voice if my name was ENVY ( it's Lindsay btw). I arrive to pick up my food, and wait 5 minutes at the to go counter before anyone even acknowledged me (there were 3 cashiers at the register btw). I get home and get ready to eat my food, and they messed up my order. I def should have checked out my dish before I left, but I was so used to the awesome food at the Laurel location, where my order was always correct. I ordered chicken sausage and they gave me bacon, ok fine I can deal with bacon. My caramel French toast had no caramel drizzle and was dry as cotton, disgusting, the bread must have been stale. My home fries were also uncooked, and tasted like raw potatoes with no flavor, they were also hard, not crunchy and soft like the ones in laurel. My food was horrible! I will definitely be making the drive to laurel to visit their silver diner, because greenbelts is a ghetto/unprofessional/disgusting disappointment! The only reason I gave this place 1 star is because I like the silver diner franchise. I will just never waste my money at the one in greenbelt ever again. read more

I love everything about Silver Diner! It definitely isn't your typical diner food. Everything my family and I have ever ordered from there looks and tastes so fresh! The crab soup is out of this world. The milkshake melt in your mouth! Plus, when your order a shake they give you the extra milkshake in a cup and basically you get two for one! Downside, sometimes the wait can be a little long but I stay regardless because it is just that good. The service has never been bad and you get your food in a timely fashion. All of the veggies and fruits look great too (my daughter loves veggies so she loves this place) I just love this place read more

Never again. Went for take out. It was just after 5:00 when we arrived and not super busy. Light enough that servers were standing around the take out order area. However, for some reason, we waited 30 minutes for our food - which would be pretty lengthy for a diner even if we were in a booth. Then we got home and didn't have sides that were ordered and should've come with the food. And - my burger is cold. Someone missed monitoring when the food was ready and if it was all there. Called to let them know of their error. Didn't seem too concerned. I won't be too concerned about ever going there again. For the cost and quality, we could've had Chipotle twice, been satisfied, and ended up with leftovers. Next time, that's what we'll do. Now I'm hopping up from my cold burger to make my child more food. He's done and still hungry - that extra bacon and strawberries we didn't get would've done the trick. read more

Went on 5/20/2013. Never going back again. My wife and I went with my parents for lunch. They told us they were busy so we waited 20 minutes for a table. Upon being seated, they took our order. Around 45 minutes later, our food hadn't showed up, with no explanation. We were starving! We asked the waiter, who said our food was coming up. Ten minutes later, nothing, and the waiter comes out and says that two of the four meals are ready, and would we like them. We say yes. Seven or Eight minutes later and nothing; we wave the waiter down and he tells us that one of the other waiters had taken our food and given it to someone else. At that point, we ask if we should leave, and the waiters advises us yes. We ask to see the manager. No manager comes. Ever. Over the next fifteen minutes or so we get our food staggered. Finally. we get one of the meals taken off the bill and 10% off the check, but we should have gotten a free entree for our next meal according to their 110% service guarantee. But since the manager didn't care to talk to us, we just gave up. We won't be going back anyway, free entree or not. Also, according to my wife, the womens restroom was disgusting. Water all over the flower and the toilet wouldn't stop flushing. And the jukebox at the table wasn't working. This isn't the first time we've had problems there. Often the service is very slow. This location is poorly managed and probably understaffed, particularly in the kitchen. We actually enjoy the food, however it's not good enough to keep us from going elsewhere where we've had good service and a good experience. read more

Our family loves Silver Diner, and we frequent the Rockville and Fair Oaks locations often. A recent visit to the Greenbelt location was extremely disappointing. The men's bathroom had a strong odor of urine and the floor needed mopping. We mentioned this to our waiter and noted the bathroom was in the same condition an hour later when we left the restaurant. Secondly, we returned our chocolate milkshakes because they had an odd taste to them. Upon returning with replacements, the waiter apologized that "the milk was bad". When the hamburgers arrived, the meat was raw in the middle and needed to be sent back also. The waiter was apologetic, but the overall experience was seriously lacking. So much for the 110% satisfaction guarantee, no manager came to apologize, instead we saw him playing cards with his employees as we left. On our next visit to the Fair Oaks location, we discovered that our Eat Well Do Well cards were missing... the waiter at Greenbelt must have neglected to return them. Three cards with four visits recorded - gone. It would be great if the Greenbelt location could clean up it's act. It doesn't reflect the values that we have seen from the Fair Oaks, Rockville and yes, we have frequented the Cherry Hill location in NJ on the way to NY. Until then, we will travel the extra distance to Rockville where great customer service and food is guaranteed. read more
