Slightly above average diner. Good omelettes, cups of fruit, cobb salad, okay pancakes and quesadillas. They deliver too

A year has passed since my review was posted. Since then, it seems like the management in the kitchen has declined. I've gotten salted fries several times after ordering them unsalted, as I usually do, & while the waiter or waitress typically orders up a special plate of unsalted fries after I complain, the fact that the first batch of fries came out to me speaks to some kind of problem between wait staff & kitchen or in the attentiveness of the wait staff. My wife's BLT orders are also fairly particular, &, again, tend to be ignored. read more

Well this is my 3 rd and probably final visit. This store isn't even close to the silver diners I have been to previously. Service is extremely slow, plenty of staff milling about. Store was busy but having to wait for 10 minutes for a server to show up for the drink order is not what I expected from the typical silver diner. This I thought would be the one redeeming eatery in Greenbelt, sadly t looks like am forced to travel to adjacent cities to find a decent meal and st least somewhat better service. Will never eat here again. Boyfriend bit into a biscuit and out came a finger piece of a plastic glove.. Clearly someone knew the finger part broke off the glove and left it (grossed out just thinking about it). Called and spoke with a manager that acted completely uninterested and unapologetic. I am floored at the terrible service I received at this location. I have eaten and ordered from here many times. Twice before today my order has been wrong when I got home, but I let it go. Today, for the THIRD time it was wrong, not even close to what I ordered, I checked the receipt (which had the right order on it) and decided to call to get it re-made. The manager said that I could come in to get the right order. When I went back and the manager did not seem the least bit concerned about my inconvenience. I should say one nice female server was very accommodating, although she was not directly involved . He showed me the order, which seemed to be correct but it was missing the biscuit that I ordered but I did not mind at this point. I got home and began to eat, only to realize that it was wrong AGAIN, I asked for a simple egg white omelette with goat cheese, and I got egg whites with feta. I very rarely complain about food orders but this was ridiculous! I called and spoke with the manager and asked for a refund, and I brought back the omelette to show him. Even to this point I was agitated but not angry, until I went back. The manager did not say ONE WORD to me, not an apology, not a humble word, he did not bother to even look me in the eye, he just handed me cash! Horrible customer service, during this whole process I was not swearing or carrying on, I just wanted the correct order. Silver Diner is, yet again, Silver Diner. A chain! Their food is always mediocre - not good, but not spit-it-out terrible. The only kinda good thing worth mentioning are their corn and crab chowder, milkshakes, and roasted veggies with salmon. The corn n' crab chowder is BOMB... aka the ONLY reason I come here (when I get a craving for it). The milkshakes are good and their roasted veggies with salmon is what I normally get if I am hungry. Oh... and I tend to come here in the middle of the night when everything else is closed, so that also says something... It's just convienently open. read more

After eating here several times in the last three months and then seeing the yelp reviews, I was really surprised to see this place average only three stars. Then I started thinking why would someone rate this place so low? Once you sit down and think about it, it's no surprise and I ended up at the same result. While the food here is excellent and deserves a full five stars, the service on the other hand is at the opposite end of the spectrum and is somewhere in between zero and two stars. There's a mismatch here...probably not unlike how different the generic looks of a greasy diner with 50s music and the healthy and unique food that is served here. I've never had a bad dish here and the food is delicious, but rarely have I had a good dining experience here. The wait staff is certainly friendly, but I'm really not sure if they understand what service really is. Slow is an understatement...and all these reviews about cold food is most likely attributed to the speed of the wait staff. Unfortunately this level of low service is pretty common for most of the restaurants in the immediate area. If you have high expectations, or even just average expectations about service, chances are you'll be disappointed, if not outright annoyed and aggravated. If you're in no hurry and have plenty of time (or if you're indifferent to bad service), you'll be surprised at how good the food is. All depends on what your perspective is; and that is quite unfortunate since there is a serious lacking of good food in this area. read more

What a great place this is! I work in the area and never know where to eat for lunch, but this is a wonderful place for great, fresh food. I ordered a yummy focaccia sandwich -- it was a black bean (vegetarian) burger with bbq sauce and scallions. It came with a yummy summer citrus salad that had strawberries and mangoes. Impressive! The portions were generous but not ridiculously large, which is a good thing. The decor was fun and the diner was very clean. The reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because service was slow and our waitress was somewhat flaky. Overall though, I would highly recommend this place for lunch. read more

I remember a pretty good meal here from a few years ago, so returned recently. Seemed more like an Eat n Park than I recalled, complete with very sticky menus! Food was not great. One of us had roasted vegetable salad, with undercooked nearly inedible vegetables. The other had chicken fried steak, which was average, but the "fried potatoes" were not too tasty. Deep fried I guess, so dry and crunchy on the outside and undercooked on the inside, and just no real flavor. Disappointing overall. Server was friendly enough, but slow and seemed a little confused. Probably won't go back. Better to go to a real diner (if only we had more around here!) read more

I love this place!!! While the great service waits on you, you can place 25 cents in the authentic music players located at each table! The 1950s decor and aura is fabulous and authentic! Classic American food fills the menus! One must try their delicious, thick milkshakes and their steak is really good for diner steak! Everything comes from local farms, so the food is really fresh. I heard about this place from another online review and it scored high marks so since i was in the area for my brother's wedding I decided to check it out. I was immediately impressed by what a cute diner this place was! It was like stepping into the diner in Back to the Future only a bit bigger. The server was knowledgable and personable, and timely. I must eat gluten free and they had delicious options that I can not find in PGH. I had the french toast with bannanas n vanilla creme and the quinoa pancakes with blueberries and pecans and I was in hog heaven. My man had pancakes with cranberries and he said that they were the best he has ever had which is high praise indeed. Everything was beautifully plated. This was the absolute worst meal I've think I have ever eaten. I don't think I can remember a time when I was physically gagging while sitting at my table. When my iced coffee was served I mistook it for iced tea, as there was absolutely no ice in it. When I inquired where the ice was, I was told that it was already melted, so I was essentially served a mix of water and coffee. There were multiple hairs in my meal, as well as my friends. The smoked salmon, or lox, that I ordered, was simply a large filet of salmon. What ever could go wrong did go wrong. The service was so horrible that my table was left picking and choosing which thing we should complain about, as we knew that if we asked for everything to be fixed, nothing would happen. When we asked to speak to the manager, he implied that we did not trust him because of his race, making the entire table severely uncomfortable. I know that I will absolutely never return, and spend my whole day hoping that my appetite will return for dinner, but I feel bad for the unassuming customers who are about to spend their money on a disastrous experience. read more

I am EXTREMELY disappointed in my former favorite diner in the DC area. I hadn't been here in a few months (I used to go once a week), so I was so excited to check it out. I get there, and waited 5 minutes to be acknowledged. The waitress tells apologizes and tells me she picked up extra tables, etc. I told her tgat if it's a problem, I can easily go elsewhere, or even just go to another station. She said I was fine where I was and I ordered. She brought my coffee, and the cup was filthy! She apologized profusely and took it back. Wgen she brought the new coffee out, I reached for my napkin and noticed that both my fork and knife were dirty! At this point, I went to the manager and complained about it all. My review is due in part to the state of mind I was in while there. My husband had just been in the hospital for two days and it looked liked he would be in there for a few more days. They didn't know what was wrong. I needed to get out of the house and I need to do something that didn't involve alcohol for fear that something would happen with him and I would be trashed. So when it doubt, food is the answer. My besties came with me and we decided to eat a small feast of food from the SD. We started off with Chili and Southwestern Egg Rolls.. They were both very good and we ate them all up even before the waiter had time to ask how they were.. We had burgers and fries and onion rings and everything was hot and juicy. The waiter was very nice and polite and he was very good. We were so full, we thought we would need a wheel barrow to take us out but we didn't. We did get cake to go. (Yes I know!) WOW...let's start with that as an adjective about this place and them only move upwards with praise. I'm in the DC area for work and have been living (sadly) off Wendy's and other crap while on the road. I drove by the Diner and glancing over, I saw their sign for local sourced, organic food and thought "come on, it's a diner". Yesterday (yes, I came two nights in a row :), I had the Portabella Pesto Veggie Pasta and I can honestly say it was better than many of the "fine dining" establishments I visit regularly (I like food so I'll have dinner anywhere if the food is supposedly good). The pasta was perfectly al dente and the pesto was amazing, the pine nut taste reminded me of the fresh pesto I tasted in Cinque Terre...amazing. The butternut squash was cooked to the perfect softness where it didn't fall apart in your mouth but a just enough firmness to add to the deliciousness in my mouth. The 2nd night I tried the teriyaki glazed portabellas with farro and it was very good as well. The only detriments to the two dinners, and I had to look really hard, was the the glazed portabellas had something a bit too crunchy in it, possibly the cilantro since it is out of season, and the fact that they don't have regular iced tea, only flavored choices. I had the Angel Chardonnay with dinner tonight and it was average...good wine for a diner :). Decided to spurge and get a chocolate shake for dessert and it was well, well worth it! So much for eating healthy. I will be here many more times before I leave! read more

Cool art deco style like an old siverside diner, but look at the menu and it'll blow your mind! Antibiotic and hormone-free Creekstone Beef, farm fresh eggs, meats, bread, beer, wine, coffee and other goodies and specialties from local farms and businesses. The menu choices will wow everybody and they even have nice vegan choices and a great selection of salads. If I lived nearby, I'd here regularly. While the food is amazing, the star(s) of this show are the employees. I have never been somewhere and felt genuinely appreciated. Not only do they remember you, but really give you great advice on food and drink selections. Had brunch here with a small group. The food was very good, and all the healthy options were great. My mother in law treated my husband and I to a breakfast this past weekend at Silver Diner in Greenbelt, Maryland. My husband had the huevos rancheros, one of the food items that my mother in law had was a spinach and feta cheese egg dish, and I had the lumberjack breakfast that had pancakes, over medium eggs, (with bacon and sausage). I really want to love this place, its close to my home and serves food from local farms! I've now been there four times and have had poor service and they have messed up my order every time. The first time I was with friends and I ordered a burger that comes with BBQ sauce, I asked for light sauce and it came dripping sauce off the burger onto the plate and the fries were cold. This was after waiting a long time for the food. The waiter came back with fresh fries and I told him to not bother with the burger because we had already waited so long for the food. The second time I ordered the same burger but no sauce. Once again it came dripping with sauce and cold fries! I again asked and received hot fries and just ate the burger because I was with friends and didn't want to wait. I did ask the server what was up and told him this was my second time there with similar problems. He said only the kitchen staff on weekend days pay attention to orders, he was sorry and gave me a coupon for a free meal and didn't charge me for the burger. I go again with my coupon with a friend for breakfast, on a weekday. I got steak and eggs. The steak was cold, potatoes Luke warm and my sunny side up eggs were so runny that the whites were runny. I have never seen sunny side eggs so runny, but they said that is how they serve them, it could have been my bad, but asked the waitress to heat the steak and throw the eggs back on the grill and do them over easy. She takes the food and about five minutes later comes over and asks again what I'd like done. She goes back over and its probably another 10 minutes before I get the food back, now the eggs are hot but the steak is lukewarm. I gave up and ate the food at that point. I did talk to a manager and he was very apologetic and gave me a coupon for another meal, which I didn't expect, I just wanted him to know I wanted to support the business but had had a number of bad experiences. So one more time I go, this time by myself. I get the crab cakes, and asked if I could replace the coleslaw and fries with mashed potatoes and spinach. The waiter sits down in the booth with me, but after taking the order sits a while longer writing it out, it was awkward. Soon after he comes with the soup ( it was under entrées that said they come with soup or salad, but he seemed to act as if he was doing me a favor bringing me the soup.) As he delivered it he said the crab cakes would be right out. Minutes later he brings the crab cakes, with French fries and coleslaw! Then says he can bring me the other things I ordered, what were they? He takes the coleslaw, and comes back with a plate to take the fries (which were cold!) He then asks again what I wanted, saying I would have to pay for the spinach (which was to replace the coleslaw he took!) I forgot to mention the crab cakes were cold in the middle and luke warm on the outside, I didn't even say anything about that to him. He then brings the (instant?) Mashed potatoes. He asks again about the veggie, and I realize he now is bringing me roasted veggies not spinach so I correct him. He comes out again to ask if I wanted garlic on the garlic spinach listed on the menu. Now as I finish my potatoes he brings the spinach, with some kind of awful processed garlic on them. I had one item at a time, and was horrified by the service. He didn't charge me for the tea, and the meal was free, but it irked me I had to pay $3 for that terrible spinach after all that craziness. I ended up tipping him for 20% of the whole price if it hadn't been free, because he worked hard and was nice, but he was a terrible server! I just want the restaurant to train their servers well, and serve hot food to order. I want to support them because they have high quality food from local farms. It would seem the kitchen staff has some attitude about deviating from the menu at all, and servers just don't know how to serve the public appropriately. I'll try one more time on a weekend, and see if the kitchen gets my order right for once! read more

How have I never reviewed this place before?! Every time I'm in the area, we go for breakfast at the Silver Diner. The worst server we have ever had is perfectly adequate, and most are excellent. The food is a bit eclectic, but you should be able to find something you like. [If not, simply custom order what you want -- no agave nectar, no cinnamon sour cream, etc. They're very accommodating.] Fair prices, too. Try to get there by 10am on Sunday morning to avoid a 15-30 minute wait. Once you go here, you'll never go to a big chain restaurant for breakfast again. read more

Hands down the best food in Greenbelt. No matter what you get it is fresh, imaginative yet classic, and well made. Vegetarian options galore - roasted vegetable salad, sandwich, breakfast scrambler, hue is rancheros. Meat options are great too, some particularly inventive and tasty options include lamb sliders, bison buenos rancheros, chicken pot pie. Most entrees come with a side salad and the salads are all good, especially the citrus salad. The scrambler comes with pancakes and strawberries for a super well rounded meal. Shakes are exactly what they should be. The decor is classic diner - the waiters even wear 1950's style uniforms. 5 stars for taste, originality, consistency, visual appeal, and freshness of ingredients. read more

This is my standard go to place when I just want to chill out and enjoy a good meal. It's nothing fancy, very laid back, and the food is actually quite good. Our waitress seemed a little disconnected, more interested in the other tables than us. We ordered iced tea and got two glasses with little ice which weren't filled to the top. Only one had a lemon, even though one of us asked for extra. It wasn't the biggest thing that could have happened, it just seemed a little off. Then our food came and one order was off, again. Too many sliders and not the right kind of fries. This time it was the kitchen's fault. After this point the service started to improve. The food was excellent. Stumbled on this diner for a quick breakfast on our way for some college tours. Being from New York, wave been to many diners and I wish this one was back on Long Island.
