I stopped by the Silver Dollar Saloon and had the best hot buttered rum I've ever had, seriously unforgettable. Funny story... I walk in with intent, sit at the bar, order my drink...right after I took my first sip, I looked up and saw the "Cash Only" neon sign and realized I didn't have any on me. The waitress (I wish I had caught her name) was incredibly kind. I explained the situation and told her I'd go grab cash, and she was totally understanding. I came back and made sure to tip her well, she deserved it. I asked if they served food, and while they don't, she went out of her way to recommend a Korean spot next door and Red Dog Saloon for pizza. She even said it was perfectly fine to bring food back. So I did exactly that, grabbed some Korean chicken, brought it back, and paired it with a hot apple cider cocktail. Perfect night. This place is a must stop!! Cheapest drinks in town but not cheap in quality! We went there for the famous bloody Mary's and weren't disappointed. Soooo good. I was up in VC for the highlands games. This actually could be a great dive bar if you're a local. The bar tender Melanie is awful. I have been tending bar for over 15 years. She pays attention to either the locals or her friends I would assume. Need to pay attention to drink costs. She tried to keep cash and gave me the wrong change then gave attitude when I wouldn't tip. With my experience tending I could tell she would over pour or not even ring up people and give free drinks away. Not sure if the owners are cool with that or not but with the great prices the bar offers I'm not sure there is a lot of profit. Anyways rant over as this just makes us actual bartenders who know how to make a real drink look bad. read more

What a fun place. By far my favorite of the saloons we visited on a recent trip to Virginia City, where we hadn't been since we both were kids. There is a lot more mischief to get into here when you're of age. So the first thing to remember is that this bar is cash only. They do have an ATM, but I'm not sure what the fee is, since we both actually had some cash for once. The entrance may be hard to spot, as it's a dimly lit stairwell down from C Street (the main drag), but it's the stairwell down that intrigued us in the first place. We just couldn't pass it up. Once inside, it was medium crowded, but our drinks were served up with hardly any wait at all. I decided I would like to see the view from the back deck and get some air, so this is where we went in search of a spot to enjoy drinkies. At typical drinking establishments one is not greeted straight away unless one is a regular, but the back deck people here treated us like we were old friends. I am a bit socially awkward, but I still felt comfortable talking to complete strangers here. The vibe was very friendly and welcoming. We met two couples from Calaveras County and their assorted friends and family members who come to Virginia City annually to celebrate a birthday of one of the wives. They even offered us a place to sit, which was very nice. I could have spent the rest of my afternoon here easily, what with the vibe, cheap drinks, and the "100 Mile View" of the mountain pass from the deck. It was so relaxing. We did have a lot to explore on our day trip, but still, the temptation was there. I will absolutely be back next time we come, which I hope will be soon! This place is terrible. They allow dogs without leashes, which is dangerous. I took my service dog there with a leash, and she was attacked by a dog without a leash. I don't recommend this place at all. It's not friendly to anyone. read more

This is a good dive bar. The customers make you feel welcome to pull up a seat and hang out with them. There was a good selection of beer and liquor-just don't expect anything fancy. I wasn't a big fan of the bartender today however. I stood at the bar between 3 other groups of people. She did make eye contact with me (no smile or comment) and served all others around me. She even asked them if they were a veteran to give them a discount. After everyone was served they walked away and I was the only 1 left standing there. We made eye contact again but she walked to the other side of the bar to help others and chat with customers. After about 15 minutes of trying to get her attention, one of the usuals who was watching the situation from the moment I got in the door walked up and ordered for me. She seemed angry, never spoke to me, snatched my money (without even seeing if I was a veteran-I had my FRA veterans group shirt on but didn't get a discount), and tossed/threw my change back at me. Truly an old west hole in the wall - if you know where it is. The stairwell entrance is nestled between two store fronts on the east side of C Street. Be careful heading down those narrow steep steps. The small old spot has just six tables and a dozen stools at the bar. Satellite radio and a jukebox are both available. Hippie John was out bartender for the night. Quite the character and a basic bartender so don't order anything thing fancy. We had a great time until for some reason around 10 pm the place became flooded with more patrons- a few a little too drunk or demanding and not nice to John. If you have had enough to drive you can leave a bra on the line. Or autograph a dollar bill and staple anywhere on the wall or ceiling you can reach. I'm sorry to hear this place is closed. On a recent two day visit to Virginia City this was one of our favorite bars to hang out at. This was the only place that had a personable bartender who seemed to actually care how we were doing. I can't recall his name but he was awesome. I've included a picture of him from behind. Love this place. Not a big drinker, but I have a soft spot for truly local dive spots and good company. I fell in love with the bar itself, a small tradional bar found through a door between bonanza and the Silver Dollar and down a steep flight of stairs. It is a small bar with a tradional wood countee, high ceilings with bras strewn across and hundreds of artistically decorated dollar bills that adorn the walls, ceilings, and furniture. Great atmosphere, great music, and best of all, a grade-a bartender named John who takes no shit and is both the sweetest and most opinionated man I've met in a long time. As the only local bar that was both open AND genuine (not a cappy tourist magnet) we enjoyed our time and our company. Great dive bar. Cheap drinks an a mellow vibe. There is a great view from the back deck which is cigar friendly.

I want to also comment that this place is not closed. At least not as of April 2019. I had a great time there during the off season. One of the only bars open late at the time. Only a few people down there, but we all had a good long conversation. Next time in Virginia City I will definitely stop in again. read more

I literally go to VA CIty for this saloon. This saloon is easy to miss, you have to go downstairs to get to it so it's kind of a hidden jem of the town but I'm glad it's not as overrated as the Bucket Of Blood because it's more personal. Usually filled with locals, drinks are stiff and always perfect. The staff is welcoming and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is perfect for the ghost town and the view from their patio is one you can watch a million dollar sunset from. Often they even have great live bands playing! Also said to be haunted for the ghost hunters, ask them about the haunting a and check out their photo album with pictures from it's visitors. My fave bar in NV. read more
