My wife and I wanted to escape the summer heat so we headed up Big Cottonwood Canyon to get an afternoon lunch. I think we got to the Silver Fork Lodge around 2:30pm on a Tuesday in the middle of July. The restaurant was not particularly busy and we were greeted and sat promptly. We opted for the outdoor seating, which is where most of the patrons were at. Service was friendly and VERY casual. This is a slow paced establishment on an off day in the afternoon. Just be good with that going in. The selling point here is the location and atmosphere. It was beautiful. The view was amazing. The clear mountain air, the cooler mountain temps in July, this is what made the experience good. Okay, so we got that, now the food. First let me do a little breakdown, because I'm giving this place 3 stars. I think that's fair, but I want to break it down. Service 4/5 Service was casual. Very casual. But they weren't letting anything slip and I have no complaints. This is not high end service, but not bad service. Ambiance 5/5 If you're going here, do it for the location, the view, the experience. You can't get what they've got many places. This place offers an amazing opportunity to take in nature and all the beautiful things while having a little bit to eat. Do it for that! Food 2/5 So now I'll talk about the food. This is Sysco food. This food comes out of a package. I got the Chile Verde. This comes with, I hope I'm remembering correctly, either fries or a house salad. I got the salad. So the plate, from left to right was essentially in three parts. Left 1/3 was a pretty okay house salad. Amount of dressing was above average, and I like my salad soaked in dressing so I was pleasantly surprised. Middle was the Chile Verde Burrito. I'll cover that in a second. To the right was a big pile of black beans and a big pile of "Spanish" rice. The burrito had a few pieces of pork on top and a significant portion of melted cheddar cheese. The pork was pretty good, not too dry, the seasoning/marinade was good. But this burrito was NOT smothered in Chile Verde Sauce, nor was it filled with Chile Verde Sauce. In fact, 2/3 of the filling was the very same rice and beans that were piled high next to the burrito. Sure, there were a few more pieces of pork to be discovered within, but those were an exciting treat in an otherwise disappointing burrito. My wife debated between the French Dip and the Pulled Pork Sandwich. She made the wrong choice and got the Pulled Pork. The "house made BBQ" was nothing special and the pork was on the dry side. The coleslaw was Sysco coleslaw. I want to go back, but I want to go back for breakfast. I figure they can get their eggs and sausage from Sysco and still serve me a decent breakfast in the canyon. I'd never consider going here for their dinner. Never. They aren't doing anything special with their food. Not at all. Silver Fork Lodge, hot tip, it's time for a redo of your menu. Warm cabin style dining with a beautiful view, the food was decent, but a bit pricey due to the touristy location. They bring out fresh bread to start, which is always nice, but they also have olive oil and vinegar upon request, which is by far my favorite! As for the main course I had the buffalo burger and ceasar salad. The burger was a southwestern style with sweet sauce and onion rings inside. The sauce was a little sweet for me, the cheese wasn't melted completely, and the patty was overcooked per my request, but even with the shortcomings it was still a decent burger. And as I'm particular about the quality, it was refreshing that I didn't feel gross afterwards. The ceasar was mediocre, I've had similar quality from a pre-made salad package.. My fiance ordered the seared trout over salad.. again the meat was dry and overcooked, though moist enough to be palatable. The greens were fresh, and the flavors were good.. though we did want to use the lemon that was provided, but the garnish was more for decoration than function, and we got our fingers soaked in the lemon slices trying to get some on the fish. All in all it was good, to keep in mind that this locale has a a lot of tourism, the food quality and the price seem relatively fair, though I wouldn't drive up the canyon for this diner in particular. read more

Silver Fork Lodge is on the access road in Big Cottonwood Canyon, on the way to and from Brighton and Solitude resorts. It's a bit of a hole in the wall by outward appearance, by inside it's a friendly, rustic and charming place with a cool bar area and nice dining room. The menu is reasonably large, and there's some meat and game among the options. The wine list is large, though contains little that's interesting, but lots of people pleasers on it nonetheless. The Blistered Peppers and Jumbo Chicken Wings (real Buffalo-style) proved to be popular starters. The Wild Game Bolognese, Chicken Schnitzel and, Canyon Pepper Steak were all excellent. read more

Came here after an amazing hike at Silver Lake starving and thirsty.. and this place delivered on both! We sat on the outside deck area, all the seats had these fur wraps on them... great for staying warm and a conversation piece. Beautiful views of the mountains. I wanted to try a local beer and the waitress recommend the Uinta Cutthroat Pale Ale, I am so glad she did. Great mix of caramel malt and woody pine but not overly hoppy or bitter. I was told this place has the best Reuben's of all time. Challenge accepted.... Super tender (house made, they start preparing every morning) corned beef, melted swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing perfectly piled on toasted rye bread..... so freakin good!!! Then there was the food itself: not only were we charged bougie downtown SLC restaurant prices for food that was the same quality as Penny Anne's, but it was simply. not. good. The spinach on my Benedict was soggy and chewy, the sourdough cakes were inedible (it was like eating beer), and the coffee was worse than coffees I've gotten at Flying J's on a road trip. We are staying here for 9 nights and are so impressed with the service and accommodations here. The rooms are cozy and small, perfect for a ski lodge with the minimal appointments. The room heater is strong and parking is easy for guests. It's close to Solitude and Brighton, about 5-10m away, and the staff will shuttle you to and from the resorts if you ask. The owner, Dan Knopp, is super friendly and very helpful with tips if you ask. We skied at Brighton every day and enjoyed starting the day with breakfast, followed by skiing, then returning back to the lodge to warm up and head to dinner. Breakfast (included for guests from 8-10am) is amazing, from the freshly baked cinnamon rolls to the mountain sized omelettes. The sourdough pancakes are incredibly tasty and the coffee is from Salt Lake Roasting Company. Even if you are not staying here, it's worth a visit for breakfast or dinner. read more

I've been here several times, love the atmosphere and the food. I have a friend that came to town from San Diego so decided to have lunch at this great place. I asked if I could have a child's item on the menu and she was very snippy saying "no" so then I ordered a salad. After I ordered I saw something I wanted instead so I told her I'd like the sandwich instead, she said "I've already ordered the salad" very rudely. So I asked if it was possible to let the cook know right away not to make the salad. It wasn't a good experience. Wouldn't you know it, when she came out with the food...she brought the SALAD! I did comment on it so she took the salad away and came back 30 mins later with my sandwich...by this time, my friend had already eaten her meal. It was just her way of handling things that rubbed me wrong. This is definitely a one off. Typically the food and the staff are excellent. Just wanted the owner to know about this experience. Not a good one today. Just a shout out to another restaurant...we went out the other night and I saw something on the kids menu that looked appealing so I asked if it was okay to order that item...without hesitating, she was very accommodating and let me order from the kids menu. Ribs slapped on an empty plate with a small bowl of beans when it used to come with fries, beans coleslaw. I love the atmosphere at this restaurant. It's quaint and comforting. If you want to go somewhere for scenery and fresh mountain air while dining this is the place. I've eaten here many times pre-covid and during. I highly recommend breakfast, it's great food and large portions. Dinner is ok, I think pre-covid the food quality for dinner was better. I dined here for dinner with a group of 15 a few weeks ago and ordered a dish I have had in the past from here, meatloaf. The meatloaf was good, the gravy that was on top was super salty. Unlike many restaurants who have large portion sizes at the cost of good quality, this seemed to be large sizes and pretty good quality. We ordered a hamburger and a salsa verde burrito. The hamburger was good after a hike but not something I would order again. It was quite dry (even though it was ordered medium rare) and a little flavorless, but the tomatoes and lettuce on top did seem fresh! The salsa verde burrito was quite tasty, and had interesting flavors. I would eat here again, but would say no to the hamburger. Silver Fork Lodge is an old favorite for us as we used to stop here for food after skiing when the kids were little. The atmosphere here is still great. The quality of the foods is not quite what it used to be, and with rising popularity the prices are not what they used to be either. This is still an excellent place of lunch or dinner on the patio when the weather is hot in the valley. During the winter, it's a perfect spot to stop for food after a day of skiing. If the Schofferhofer Grapefruit beer is available on tap, we highly recommend it! It is only so-so out of the bottle, but on tap it is delicious. read more

Our server had different ideas, however. She informed us said she'd need to serve every other table that had ordered breakfast first before the kitchen would switch to lunch. So we waited. Three other tables seated after us ordered lunch and were served before we were. When the food finally arrived, one order was wrong, and another was hardly edible.
