We ordered shrimp dumplings , eggplant with shrimp, ribs (a little too fatty, shu mei , fried shrimp ball (love but I try not to get fried) and a tsing tao beer to go with it. Don't go here if you want ambiance or fancy. You should go here because you want authentic dim sum- and I can't really find it in South Florida! There is sanitizer around and the staff is wearing masks. We went late on the afternoon so I wasn't concerned about any crowds. However they do leave the sugar packets on the table which isn't exactly following Covid rules. And when you use the restroom I had to find a paper towel to open the door. They used to have other rooms but I only saw the one main room this time. They also still use their old fashioned big menu which has the main items on it so you need to sanitize after touching that. I'm a rainy day soup person. I'm not the biggest fan of hot and sour soup but that being said Silver Pond has some of the best I've ever had -- especially in south Florida. My husband loves hot & sour soup and since you can't get small bowls here (no bland won ton either), we ordered the one size (LARGE enough for 4-6 people). We wound up having two bowls each and still had a pint to take home. Chock full of tofu, bits of ground pork, etc in a vinegary broth it was served hot in temperature -- and yes -- it was a perfect antidote to the gray and rainy exterior. This place packs them in during "season" with snowbirds so we were happy to come early on a Friday evening and be seated right away (no wait). The rain may have had something to do with that. The reason I'd come was a craving for salted shrimp. The shrimp come in the shell with their heads on and topped with a bit of salt and jalapeños. I don't eat the jalapeños -- I leave those for the hubby (as well as the shrimp heads -- what can I say, he's eats almost everything!). But I do eat the shells as they're soft enough to crunch through and add extra flavor to boot. They were as good as remembered, but believe it or not, I felt they needed a touch more salt. Easy to add. They came with a big bowl of white rice which we hardly even touched. After that we shared an order of Hong Kong duck. The duck was perfectly browned and crispy & cut in pieces with a small dish of hoisin on the side. This was "eat with your hands" time to pull off the extra crispy oh so delish skin away from the fatty layer and the bones. So flavorful. Have a small portion to snack on tomorrow. Happily stuffed, we enjoyed their orange slices and fortune cookies while waiting for the check. Keep in mind you won't find chow mein or even mu shu pork here (though they do have their version of general tso's) nor many other "standards" associated with American Chinese restaurants. Called and asked if they had whole steamed fish. Was told they had 2 pound whole flounder for $25. Drove there and was told by waitress that they had whole flounder steamed for $35 No Problem. I asked what it came with and she said soy sauce! I asked if i could have some boo choy with it and she said i would have to purchase order of bok choy for $18 I asked if i could get a bowl of egg drop soup. she said they do not have egg drop soup but i need to order a soup which started at $18. So to get a 2 pound steamed flounder for $35 I would also have to get order of bok choy for $18 and any soup for $18. Total for a steamed whole flounder would have been $71 plus tip. i left and would never go back with such terrible prices with no consideration of customers needs. Wow! Really good, authentic, unAmericanized Chinese food is difficult to find, so I consider Silver Pond to be a stand out gem. The gingered lobster, eggplant and meat with oyster sauce or any of the scallops, squid or octopus meals can be an authentic Chinese treat. However, I've generally found all of their fish dishes somewhat lacking or otherwise leaving much to be desired. One would think that with all the Chinese restaurants in the area there would be many that are outstanding, but I have only found two, being Silver Pond and Rainbow Palace. Part of the key to Silver Pond might be that there is a Chinese market located in the same strip mall section of the Silver Pond restaurant, so authentic ingredients are within easy reach. The downside to Silver Pond is that it is popular, sort of too popular. Hence, especially during on season dinner hours, the wait for seating can become excessive. The service also leaves a lot to be desired, but the food, which is reasonably priced, makes up for most of those problems. read more

We have heard good things about this restaurant and we have been craving "great" Chinese food, so we decided to give it a try. The weirdest thing about Silver Pond is that they do not have an egg roll or wonton soup on the dinner menu. The only soups you can get serve 4+ people, but still no wonton soup. After we got that cleared up, and our waiter and possibly the owner answered some of our questions, we proceeded to order. I am a strict vegetarian and my husband eats anything. He ordered the prawns with garlic sauce. The prawns were a pretty good size but he said it was as bland as bland can be. We also ordered a vegetable fried rice which was pretty good (our daughter liked it!) and I ordered the Mapo Tofu, which they were nice enough to make vegetarian for me. The food came out extremely fast! After that, our waiter went and sat down at a table in the back to eat his own dinner and we never saw or heard from him again. My husband kept looking at him and he was chowing down and being served by other staff. We never even got a "how is your food" or a refill on water. Every time my husband would look over at him, the waiter would look completely annoyed that my husband was looking at him! The 2 Stars is only because they were accommodating as far as my food, as everything on the menu was listed with a chicken stock or an oyster sauce. Best Chinese food I've found here in Florida to date! This is not your standard take-out spot. This is legit, authentic, Chinese cuisine. I ordered the Hong Kong duck just because I saw all the pics of it on Yelp (major thanks to all the other Yelpers here!), and it definitely tastes just as good as it looks, if not more. My family of five was completely stuffed and still had enough for leftovers. Dishes: Bean curd with crab meat soup: Tastes good alone but even better with a few drops of vinegar. Disappointing!! Following some reviews here and others from the groups I belonged to, I marched my family down to this location earlier today. First of all, they don't offer indoor dining. Secondly, they told us that it would take 15 minutes to prepare our order (4 orders shumai, 4 orders hargow, 1 order pan fried shrimp chives dumpling). It ended up taking 25 minutes. My son was so relieved that he gulped the hargow down on the spot. We tried the shumai and shrimp chives dumplings... eekkkkkl!! Shrimp may have expired. It was so bad, we threw it out. Wow what happened to Silver Pond? Our faithful group of 11 celebrated the Year of the Tiger last night Saturday, January 29, 2022 there. Upon arrival for our 8:00 PM reservation our table was surprisingly ready. A once packed restaurant was mostly empty. The waiter promptly informed me that the kitchen closes at 9:30 PM. OK we have plenty of time for the cooks to prepare our extensive dinner. It's an elaborate affair with creative guest favors, place cards, a preselected printed multi-course menu, wines from cellars and a gourmet homemade dessert. We go all out and order APPETIZERS: BBQ Ribs, Chicken Wings, Special Seafood Roll, Magic Fried Shrimp Balls; SOUP: Minced Chicken Corn Soup; THIRD COURSE: Peking Duck; ENTREES: Beef with Eggplant, Salt & Pepper Shrimp, Phoenix Nest Seafood, Fresh Scallops in Oyster Sauce; RICE & NOODLES: Roast Pork Fried Rice, Beef with Black Bean Sauce Chow Fun; VEGETABLES: Snow Pea Tips, Baby Bok Choy, Fried Stuffed Bean Curd. Well the evening and food wasn't completely disappointing, but there were many blips. The empty restaurant should have been a foreboding. To start the decor has been diminished to paper table cloths (yes really) and paper napkins when at one time it was all cloth. Paper tablecloths are a novel way to cut expenses. But it doesn't end there. To start the special seafood rolls were basically fried mush. The dipping duck sauce was completely watered down with no sweetness at all. Everyone enjoyed the ribs which were $22.95 for an order of eight ribs. Two orders were served. The magic shrimp balls, $6.50 for three balls, are a nice presentation of a shrimp paste surrounded by crispy fried rice noodles, but the shrimp paste filling was not well liked. Four plates of shrimp balls were ordered for our crowd. Menu prices have increased. Following the appetizers the second course was the minced chicken corn soup which was sent back and removed from the bill because it tasted like dishwater. The third course, Peking duck, $65.00, was cold and flavorless. No other major complaints about the food. Most items were adequate and some better than others. The beef with black bean sauce chow fun was up to par, $16.95, but the pork fried rice, $12.95, was bland. The salt and pepper shrimp, $18.95, was a yummy fried dish and the scallops with oyster sauce, $23.95, were presented with lots of broccoli. The Phoenix nest seafood, $24.95, comes in a shredded taro fried bowl filled with squid, shrimp, scallops and garnished generously with Chinese brocolli. Silver Pond offers a nice variety of Chinese vegetables, baby bok choy, $15.95 and snow pea tips, $19.95 and always a treat to have. Cutting costs and raising prices while trying to recover from COVID shortfalls will not fill up a restaurant with customers. Unfortunately next year we will not be returning and will probably go back to an old favorite down the road, Hong Kong City BBQ. read more

Forget whatever I've said about this place in the past. It's not often I retract a negative review on yelp, but the staff and ownership has changed and the concept has substantially changed. They've also cleaned the place up a lot and the carpets are spotless and the lobster tanks are clear. They are now open for dim sum with carts and passed items at 1030am every day and the offerings are excellent. Haven't had main dishes yet but from what I see going out of the kitchen, appears solid. Menu has been revised (pink printouts) with a lot of seasonal seafood items. I'm stunned how they turned this place around after years of neglect and sitting on its laurels. Silver pond has been a staple to go to for the past few years for my parent's birthday. This was my first time here and the food definitely did not disappoint. It is authentic Chinese food. When you walk in you can see that the place is old home Chinese. There is fish tanks in the front and fresh seafood swimming in the back. They were able to reserve a table for us (17 people). The service to me is ordinary and classic Asian. When I go to an authentic Vietnamese restaurant, I do not expect the kind of service I do at other non Asian places. We know we're not there for the service, we are here for the food. We ordered the ginger lobster, the salted baked blue crabs, fried rice, and some sort of soup with crab meat. For 17 people, we ordered multiple servings. All I can say is that I have been dreaming about the salted blue crab and the ginger lobster since I was able to try it. Food was amazing and the price is reasonable. Really big portion and shareable size. I recommend the crispy duck and crispy Hong Kong chicken. The only big issue I had and that's why i give it a 3 stars is the customer service. Short story I pay my bill and write the amount and the waiter behind me watching and told me: "no tip" I was very discriminated because I was going to leave him a tip in CASH. I'm sorry I'm not the type of person who tip using credit card but cash only. I think it's an Asian thing they only love there kind but if you white, black, hispanic they look at you funny and treat you funny too. But the food is the only reason I will go back and order to go. Couldn't help feeling sad of the end of an era. We knew that Silver Pond had sold even though the previous owner vehemently denied she was selling. We have been going to this restaurant for more years and I can countand have raised children there who now have their own children. We almost always had a great experience. Last evening, we darkened the doors for the last time. We were sad to see that the new owners did not keep any of the same staff who made the experience as memorable as the amazing dishes that were truly authentic and ahead of their time. Our waiter was sufficient although not warm. The new owner was the same. The salt and pepper shrimp was excellent, easley as good if not better than the original. This was the only good thing. We ordered the Peking duck with the pancakes. The duck was ice cold, and the skin was not crispy like glass as the fat had not been rendered properly. The waitress who made the pancakes put way too much hoisen sauce and struggled at length to make each pancake. They were not good. The Chinese broccoli with garlic and oil that we ordered had no garlic and no oil. They were steamed with water not even salt...ugh they had no flavor. Our beloved beef chow fun was dry and lacked flavor. We left with no concern or questions from the new owners as to whether we enjoyed our dinner even though we left so many things sitting on the table. We hardly spoke on the way home. I am so sad. Well the food was not bad, it was not good. But more importantly than the food the one that we have felt through the years has left the room. At least for us. If the new owners are reading this review, we wish them well. Please know that you are taking over something that has been so important to so many people. Some Americanized dishes are here, but you may have to read through the descriptions to find something close to what you may have thought you wanted. Chinese food here is served FAMILY STYLE including the soups (Remember, i said this place is authentic, don't come in here and each of you order something individually and then get mad cause no one told you).. so order a few dishes and share. Also, the service...well... you might come in here and have to wait. I feel like there arent enough waiters for the amount of crowd they get here. And true to some Chinese folks... arent shining in customer service. Once you order food, it does come out pretty quickly. Traditionally, if you buy the soup, the waiter will serve everyone. I've been to this restaurant for many many years and the food has always been a hit or miss. Depending on the night you go and the chef that's working, you'll either get great traditional Chinese food or you'll get mediocre whitewashed Chinese food. The service is like most Chinese restaurants you'd find, they will give you what you need but nothing more. The menu has good options for everyone, the adventurous and the shy. I have a set list of things I love there. Beware of cleanliness though. They've been fined before for the condition of their kitchen. I get the Shark fin soup every time. Don't worry it's not really shark fin, as that is now illegal. It's just strip of clear cellophane noodles. The soup itself is a very thick gooey consistency and its fishy so be prepared. But it's very good. I also get the sautéed snow pea tips. Ask for light oil or it will come swimming in oil and be horrible for your stomach. It's also heavy in garlic. Yummmm. There's also the salty fish chicken tofu casserole. Smells awful and brings over all the flies in the restaurant but tastes sooooo good. The entrees however, spot on. We enjoyed Shrimp with Pan Fried Noodles. Cooked to perfection. What made it even more enjoyable was watching my father in law devour the dish with a smile on his face! Next was the Shredded Beef with Vegetables which was also excellent. The veggies, baby corn, snow peas, water chestnuts were very tasty. To end the meal the waiter brought a large dish with refreshing oranges and the usual fortune cookies. For me, it was a perfect way to end a delicious meal. Our waiter was very attentive, he brought new dishes for our dumplings and after as well. He mistakenly removed my Origami chop stick rest. When my husband pointed it out he immediately replaced my chop sticks with a smile on his face! This is a small thing but does not happen everywhere. I can not recommend this place enough to anyone who loves Chinese food and lives anywhere near this place. Any time I am in Florida it is a MUST for me.
