Shredded pork with chili pepper. Disproportionally between meat and peppers and onions.
    Lena H.

This place is a hit and miss. Services are nice for dine in or togo and folks are friendly here. We have dined in and togo many times but the quality of the food and taste consistency varies each time. I ordered their orange peel beef, sometimes it is over fried and really crispy that you can't taste any meat left and sometimes it is way too soggy that I ended up throwing away as it is not worthy of eating. I ordered the shredded pork with chili pepper and sometimes it is proportionate with meat and other ingredients, while other times it is barely enough meat and all green peppers and onions. The inconsistencies really sucks because you don't know if that is a ok or good or bad meal. Anyway, after many times of trying due to convenience, I think it is time to explore other options. One more thing is that I am overcharge for an item here and there while their menu price is $1 less and noticed on my receipt later on.

We came here years ago and apparently, I didn't get a chance to do a review! We needed to find a place that was centrally located to our extended family members, where there was parking and near our daughter's bakery so we decided to meet here for a Chinese New Year luncheon. Parking is ample and there are spaces in the back of the restaurant as well. Everyone got a chance to order one of their favorite dishes and we had an assortment of food which were all tasty and delish! I especially liked the crispy fried chicken wings and sweet and sour pork spareribs! It was great to see our relatives and a enjoy a delicious lunch together! Simon, the owner and Andy, our server were attentive and friendly!

(3.5 out of 5) My favorite thing here I forgot to take a picture of. I really suggest you ask for the soy wasabi type sauce they have the goes over the rice. We got Japanese style rice. Super good with this sauce. The general Tso chicken. Very good as well! Everything else wasn't necessarily the best. I do suggest coming here though. I'll be back just for the rice dishes. I definitely wanna try other dishes. So I'll be back! Service was very good! And ambiance is also super nice. I love the classy aesthetic And when you come tell them Rothyy sent you

Totally haphazardly ran into this place, as we were trying to go to the Cajun restaurant next door, but they were closed on a Monday. We were ready to hop back into our vehicles and head out to plan B as we just got done playing golf and we were all starving. Then a strong waft of wok cooking caught my senses and I started looking around. And lo and behold, this Chinese restaurant was right in front of us, but you can't really tell as it is just in a basic strip storefront. Hong Kong Iced Coffee ($3.75/4*) I was sold this as I've never had one. I've had milk teas hot and cold up the yin yang, but never thought of Hong Kong as having a rep for coffee. It was quite good, like a much lighter version of Vietnamese Iced coffee. Quite milky, a tad sweet from condensed milk is my guess. And the coffee had a strong roast flavor similar to Viet coffee just not as thick or dense, this had regular coffee viscosity. This went surprisingly well with the food here, as I've never really had Iced coffee with Cantonese food before. XO Seafood Fried Rice ($13/4.5*) I'd say perfectly fried rice, fluffy texture with each grain being separate versus sticky clumps. Great wok flavor with that smoking oil flavor that I just love. The only knock for me, is that I didn't really get a big hit of the XO in the bites. If it were there, then it is really on the mild side. Kung Pao Chicken ($14.25/3.5*) I let my friends each pick a dish, as when I pick the menu, then I tend to get the same things. This way I may get to try a dish that either I've never had or haven't had in a long time. This was the latter for me. Chicken was perfectly cooked, super tender and tasty. No shortage of peanuts, which is appropriate and the veggies were a bit heavy on the bell pepper. The sauce was like a lighter version of sweet n' sour, which doesn't excite me, but at least it wasn't gloopy thick here, which is to be commended. I didn't love this dish but I also didn't hate it. Spinach with Garlic ($11.50/4.5*) I'd say perfectly executed, nice and vibrant whole leaves and stems of chinese spinach, blanched til just barely done/wilted and served with a scant of a light soy sauce on the bottom. I prefer a bit more of a browned garlic flavor, as the garlic here had a blanched/boiled texture. Rock Cod with Mushrooms cooked in Consommé ($15.50/5*) Very well balanced and well composed dish. Crunch from the bell peppers and onions, nice meaty chunks of mushroooms and even meatier chunks of rock fish. The sauce was a slightly thickened broth so nothing got smothered in a thick sauce. The sauce was like a see through veil, very classy. The kitchen here has some skills, better than most. I can just tell that they'd be able to rock out my faves at a high level. And the service is very western in that the host is quite chatty and would probably get to know his regulars. A very rewarding yet serendipitous outing. Pleasantly pleased.

I was looking forward to eating at Silver Spoon as I hadn't been back since before the COVID pandemic. We ordered fried chicken wings, Peking spare ribs, honey walnut prawns, beef stew in clay pot, black mushrooms with American broccoli, and tomato beef chow mein with thin (Hong Kong style) noodles. Overall, the food was good with the exception of 2 dishes. The black mushroom and American broccoli dish had very little flavor. It needed more salt. Then, on the other hand, the tomato beef chow mein was so salty...all you tasted was salt. Normally, there is supposed to be a sweetness to it. I eventually told the waitress that I never had any dish that was as salty as their tomato beef dish. It was really bad...don't let the picture fool you. We came to the conclusion that the chef must have added more salt thinking he was adding the sugar. She apologized for that but never offered to remove that dish from the bill or provide any other compensation. I had also asked the waiter if he could take a photo of us. This was when our food was still hot and not all eaten up. He had a dirty dish in his hand and said he wanted to bring it back to the kitchen first. He came back out, took orders, cleared tables, and more but didn't come back to take our picture. After waiting for over 20 minutes, I finally asked the waitress to take our picture. Most of our food was already eaten up by that time. The waiter finally came back to take our photo just before we were going to leave. I told him the waitress already took our photo. I definitely was not happy with that waiter. I would have given this place 3 stars but lowered it to 2 stars as I was totally not happy with them and am not planning to go back to their restaurant.

Delicious! And made without MSG! Ordered MuShu Pork, egg flower soup, tomato beef chow fun, salt and pepper fish. Simon asked us if we wanted extra peppers in our salt and pepper fish and I told him we were trying to avoid to much salt so he limited the salt on all our food. And it all came out perfectly seasoned for us! Simon was very attentive and made sure everything was good. Our favorite Chinese restaurant! Can't wait to come back!

Beef w/ Snow Peas and Fried Rice

Not only is the customer service amazing but the food is fresh and delicious!! I did a phone order for pick up but came in little early so my food was not ready yet. I was greeted right away and while i waited for my food they brought me fresh hot tea. Had small talk with the staff, and they are genuinely really nice people. Ordered a lunch plate of beef w/ snow peas and fried rice and an order of won ton soup. The beef was perfect flavor and snow peas were cooked perfect where it still had a nice crunch. The fried rice was delicious and I like that there is no meat in it. The won ton soup was perfect! The broth was hot and flavorful and I like how they put mushrooms and zucchini in the broth. This is now my go to Chinese spot when I come to Castro Valley!

Hole in the wall but very good! Came here for lunch with family of 7 and it was great and their price was great too. We got a bunch of dishes but my favorite was the salt & pepper ribs and hot and sour soup. So good. Service was immaculate!

We sat in the main dining room with one other couple. Service was friendly and since we have been here many times before we ordered quickly. I was disappointed that our dishes were slow coming out and not together but when arrived each dish was full of flavor and temperature appropriate with good portions. We ordered appetizer chicken wings, a chow main dish and lemon chicken. The chow main was brought out first without the other dishes for at least 10 minutes. I expected the appetizer dish first or at least to arrive with the other dishes all at once or within a short time in order to enjoy together. It was late so I did not address this. The waitress never said our other dishes were soon to come or were being prepared . I actually thought they were forgotten. The flavor of CGR food is very good but I was not fond of how the dishes came out. I do plan to return and I will address the timely arrival of my order so I can enjoy a cohesmeal together. I think this was a communication problem that can be corrected. Give CGR a try you won't be disappointed with the flavor.

The interior has that classic, old-school Asian restaurant vibe, almost bordering on a tiki bar feel. I'd heard about Genghix from locals for a long time, and now I understand the appeal. We started with the chicken lettuce cups and seared butterfish--both were excellent, and our 11-year-old especially loved the lettuce cups. For entrées, we ordered seafood Pad Thai, chicken fried rice, honey walnut prawns, Mongolian chicken, and steamed rice. Everything came out fresh, flavorful, and easily held its own against some of our go-to spots. We had plenty of leftovers and they tasted great for lunch the next day. Overall, it was a really enjoyable meal, and we're already planning to go back and explore more of the menu. It's extensive and can feel a bit overwhelming, but if you're in the mood for Japanese, Chinese, Thai, or Vietnamese cuisine, you'll definitely find something that hits the spot.

I didn't care for the bun with the hot dog or the other noodle dish. Later that day, my daughter mentioned she had found hair in a pork bun and that her cousin had eaten it. She also said every item he picked up had hair on it, which was disappointing. I didn't confirm this with my cousin, but it would have been helpful to have someone inform the staff. Servers & restaurant staff were very serious. No pleasantries were expressed when we entered or when we were seated. No smiles on their faces. It felt like that they didn't want to be there! We confirmed by the response to our tea experience. We ordered Jasmine tea for 2. When it arrived in a heavy pot, we let it steep for 2 minutes before we poured it into cups. It was luke warm, slightly warmer than tap water & it tasted like water. We requested that it be replaced. It was taken away by our server with a frown on her face, no apologies. Another server later walked by & explained it would be a couple of minutes. When the pot returned, we put a timer for 3 minutes. Now it was hot, but not tea hot, but still lacking Jasmine flavor. By this time, none of the servers checked in on us about the tea. We finally called our server. She explained that the manager's instructions were to put 1 tsp of tea leaves. If we want it darker, we should steep it longer. We did. That didn't work. Still no tea flavor. She then offered to take it off our tab & walked away. She also informed us other patrons had liked the Jasmine tea. She seemed really angry that we brought the problem of the tea to their attention. For the rest of our dining time, no one approached us. We enjoyed the delicious food but put the tea aside. It wasn't replaced or fixed. It took a while to even get the check. Food is good. Interior design is good. Service needs major improvement.
