We only come here for the duck. Lol My husband LOVES it! He says it's the best duck outside of SF Chinatown.

Mu Shu Chicken
Joanna F.

This place rules, shocked it has 3.3 stars! Service was quick, nice, and helpful for us when we asked for some menu advice. The portions are absolutely huge, one plate of something can easily feed two people and very very reasonably priced for the portion. The mu shu chicken is absolutely beast, something in the sauce man!! The beef w black bean sauce was admittedly not my favorite which is why I give 4 instead of 5 stars, but even when we ordered it the waitress was like "...ok..." so clearly that wasn't a good option lol but the why is it on there!! Hoping to go again, get the house special chow mein, and upgrade my rating -- next time I gotta try the duck

Pot stickers - huge!
Glenn L.

Came in for a later lunch on a Saturday with four of us and we ordered the pot stickers, the Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce, the Singapore style rice noodles, half a roast duck, and the fish with black bean sauce. All the food was great, with the Chinese broccoli really standing out.

Roast Duck ($34.98 whole)

I can't attest to the other dishes here but their roast duck didn't disappoint one bit! We came to pick up some up for Christmas, and they were selling out fast. Prices for the roasted meats are a bit higher given they are a sit-down restaurant vs. a casual to-go meats spot. RECS: + Roast duck ($34.98 whole) was very juicy and flavorful. I liked that it came with sauces. Meat was a tad too salty but not an issue

Authentic Chinese food in Castro Valley! Really tasty and nice service. We ordered several dishes including my favorite Peking spare ribs and duck. I really liked how the portions were all big and definitely family sized to share. Everything has good flavor. There are a lot of tables inside to eat and I like how they display the duck and crispy pork on the racks. They chop up all their meats fresh. I love the sweet duck sauce that comes with the duck. All of tables are clean and they are very attentive on their service. I can't wait to come back to try more items.

It's been ages since I've "dine in", only gotten takeout for the last five years. I've lived in Castro Valley for over 30 years and there's so many changes of ownership, finally this one has stuck even after remodel which refreshed inside!! Roast duck, Fukien fried rice, seafood clay pot, and bokchoy black mushroom! All delicious with good size portions! Lady server was really sweet and patient! Was quick to give us extra knives and napkins when needed. I will be returning soon!

I've driven past this divey-lookin' Cantonese spot that looks like it used to be an old KFC, so many times. I finally decided to take a peek and got some take-out to bring to a family member's house for a luncheon get-together. Given the old fast food spacing, I thought this was going to be mostly a take-out spot. But this place does have some tables in there and may even rock some table service. I did a pick-up on a weekend lunch, and the inside was quite packed, almost chaotic even. The tables are jammed together, and people are bringing parties of 4-6 in here like it is a banquet hall, some even lugging strollers in that tiny space. And with all that clusterf#@'n, there is a line of people standing, waiting for take-out literally hovering over people's heads that are eating. Friggin' insane! Total 180 from 2020...member those days. Lol But I can see why people can mob this spot. The kitchen is pretty decent, not top notch but quite decent. And even though not cheap ($17+ dishes) they do give you a good amount, so I think there is a good perception for value here Combo Chow Mein ($19/3*) I got this for family members that like noodles, and I thought it was just mid. Thick yellow lo mein noodles are stir fried with big chunks of chicken, pork and shrimp. The proteins were impressive as nothing were tiny bites. But the noodles were just meh, with little wok flavor and it just seemed a bit tacky to me, versus smooth and chewy. I wanted to try the chow fun but will have to wait til next time. The reviews seem positive for that. Half Roast Duck ($18/4.5*) I only had a few pieces during our potluck and I felt they do a good job with these roast ducks. Beautiful mahogany color on the exterior, not too crisp but also not greasy and soggy. The meat was juicy and not too salty, which I applaud. Lots of bony pieces but that is the nature of this dish, it is a nibbler's jam. Salt n Pepper Pork Chops ($17.50/3.5*) Thin cut pork chops cut into smaller pick-up pieces. It is definitely marinated in that baking soda seasoning as the meat is super tender, almost squishy. There's some starch coating (cornstarch?) but the fry is so light that it doesn't get that crisp. I like it more crisp. But not sure if the steam from the box softened the crispness, but I tried one right in the car to taste while it was still fresh. I liked the seasoning as it was salty and very garlic-y, but the exterior was more sticky and tacky versus crisp. I love Canto food so I'm sure I'm gonna be back to try more dishes. Still want to try their Wonton Soups, a simple steamed fish dish with some vibrant greens and that Beef Chow Fun just to name a few. I may even eat in but definitely on a weekday/weeknight. I'm not too keen with someone hovering above my head whilst I'm having a serious nomming session. *insert shrugged shoulders emoji*

Salt & Pepper Spareribs (winnah)

I had Mexican, Filipino and Japanese food during my East Bay weekend: I was ready for something else. I'm glad Hong Kong BBQ was nearby my friend's place in Castro Valley. We shared salt & pepper pork chops, garlic pepper steak cubes, roast duck and roast pork (not pictured). In addition, we received a complimentary cup of hot & sour soup. All of the food was really good, except the roast pork that was average. The pork chops were big, tender and nicely seasoned. Likewise, the beef was tasty AF and the duck was crispy on the outside, and moist on the inside. It was way better vs a duck I bought at 99 Ranch recently. The latter lacked any flavor, and the skin was not crispy. Lastly, my issue with the roast pork is that it did not include much crunchy skin. Regarding the ambiance, its pretty sterile but functional. You can see the BBQ items hanging to the right of the counter. The service was friendly and the food came out fast. The comp hot & sour soup was a nice surprise. I'm surprised at the good ethnic food in Castro Valley. The population is 1/4 vs where I live, and the latter has no good Chinese or Filipino food.

Beef Chow Fun

I only come for their B.B.Q. items They also have many other selections. I ordered 2 items bbq meat (meat of your choice) over rice, I had roast duck and roast pork (their skin is super crunchy!), and their barbecue pork is also a must to order. They have also added different Chinese dessert, their black soy bean pudding is very tasty, but I believe they don't offer that often. Service is just okay, they tend to ignore you when it becomes busy. But I will still recommend this place for take out

Coconut dessert
Kai W.

This spot is an amazing hidden gem in Castro Valley for roast duck and Chinese/Cantonese style dessert. The duck here is juicy, meaty, and flavorful. No bony/anorexic ducks here! We've ordered from here multiple times and they have always been consistent with our order. Now, while the duck is really good, what we really love about this place is the dessert. The owner here makes the most amazing tofu pudding (douhua) in the entire bay area. My partner and I have yet to find any place that matches how silky and smooth the tofu is or how refreshing the homemade syrups are. Believe me, we've tried places in the south bay, the east bay, and the peninsula and no one comes close. The owner has also started making coconut jelly/pudding (tongsui) that we think is better than Melo Melo or Tongsui. She makes it with no gelatin for those who are vegetarian. Granted it's just plain coconut flavor but it is just so good. Highly recommend this spot! Check them out!

Fukien Fried Rice
Terrysue T.

I've been here a couple of times before with family. This time, we ordered Fukien Fried Rice, Chicken Salty Fish Fried Rice, Tomato Beef Chow Mein, Beef Chow Fun, and Salt Pepper Chicken Wings. All of these tasted good! Their portions are very generous. The entrees are definitely good for sharing. We all took home leftovers.

Shrimp fried rice

Wow, very impressive. Ordered catering dishes for our Thanksgiving luncheon at work. All the food was hot and fresh and exactly what we ordered. The roast duck was juicy, soy sauce Chicken was great, Singapore noodles was amazing , and the soy sauce premium chow mein. We will order from them again. Food was ready and we did not have to wait. They are very organized.

How much are the roast ducks?

Do you have chop Suey?

Chop Suey is not a real or authentic Chines Dish. It was something that was created back in the early days by a clever Chinese restaurant owner that felt it would appeal to the Western Palate. It was also very inexpensive to make and serve to…

Has anyone noticed the change in the roast duck with the new owners?

About the same. The same lady in charge of the bbq. The bbq pork is hit or miss as always.

After a bad experience at a different spot years ago, my family and I gave up on finding good Chinese food out here (originally from the east coast, IYKYK). I decided today "why not give another place a try" and I'm glad I did. I ordered the Broccoli with Prawns. I didn't realize until I got there, that this entree doesn't come with Rice. However, Simon came from out the kitchen and graciously hooked me up with some on the house since it was my first time. We love wonderful customer service over here!! We ordered the braised filet fish with mushrooms and quality was majorly lacking. This is the first time our fish has tasted like it was frozen and then reheated. It had that defrosted spongy texture and the outer texture was soggy. Did not at all taste fresh. The portions have also majorly decreased and mushrooms were cut thinly and sparse. Also ordered the seafood chow mein and literally had to try to fish for ingredients which were lacking...two shrimps, two small fish, 1-2 scallops, two squids. Not sure what's going on here but hope that there are improvements in the future. Otherwise, staff is friendly

We sat in the main dining room with one other couple. Service was friendly and since we have been here many times before we ordered quickly. I was disappointed that our dishes were slow coming out and not together but when arrived each dish was full of flavor and temperature appropriate with good portions. We ordered appetizer chicken wings, a chow main dish and lemon chicken. The chow main was brought out first without the other dishes for at least 10 minutes. I expected the appetizer dish first or at least to arrive with the other dishes all at once or within a short time in order to enjoy together. It was late so I did not address this. The waitress never said our other dishes were soon to come or were being prepared . I actually thought they were forgotten. She also said every item he picked up had hair on it, which was disappointing. I didn't confirm this with my cousin, but it would have been helpful to have someone inform the staff. Fortunately, no one at our table found hair in their food, which was a relief. Servers & restaurant staff were very serious. No pleasantries were expressed when we entered or when we were seated. No smiles on their faces. It felt like that they didn't want to be there! It was luke warm, slightly warmer than tap water & it tasted like water. We requested that it be replaced. It was taken away by our server with a frown on her face, no apologies. Another server later walked by & explained it would be a couple of minutes. When the pot returned, we put a timer for 3 minutes. Now it was hot, but not tea hot, but still lacking Jasmine flavor. By this time, none of the servers checked in on us about the tea. We finally called our server. She explained that the manager's instructions were to put 1 tsp of tea leaves. If we want it darker, we should steep it longer. We did. That didn't work. Still no tea flavor. She then offered to take it off our tab & walked away. She also informed us other patrons had liked the Jasmine tea. She seemed really angry that we brought the problem of the tea to their attention. For the rest of our dining time, no one approached us. We enjoyed the delicious food but put the tea aside. It wasn't replaced or fixed. It took a while to even get the check. Food is good. Interior design is good. Service needs major improvement.
