There a couple of seats nearby to eat in, or outside the marketplace but quick and easy to take out. I stopped by for lunch because I was craving some dumplings and remembered them from visiting another vendor in the marketplace. I got the Steamed Pork & Napa Cabbage Dumplings, the Shrimp and pork shumai, and a couple more. They were fresh and tasted delicious. The pork & chive dumplings ($20 for 30 dumplings) were so flavorful, eating a handful isn't enough. The meat juices just flow out after 1 bite. I would definitely reorder when I run out. In addition to the frozen dumplings, I ordered the Noodles w.Black Bean sauce & ground pork. Once you mix the sauce, the flavor is perfect & not too salty. It used to be that you could get veggies and lots of soups and offerings. It is inside the Castro Valley Marketplace which is a pretty cool idea but it hasn't taken off like it should. The black bean sauce and cucumber was like the perfect combo that balanced each other out. The noodles were a decent texture. The shumai was "meaty" and can't go wrong with the flavor. Located in the Castro Valley Marketplace, which is a cool spot. My 1st time going to this Marketplace. The parking lot is cramped and tight, though. There were open spots but because the spots are so tight, people are having to go back and forward to get into the spot, so you are waiting there waiting for people to either finish parking or finish exiting. It is a poorly designed parking lot and takes away from the enjoyment of visiting the shops. It's a car accident waiting to happen. Dumpling Kitchen food was ok. I would say similar to Ranch 99 hot foods area. Maybe a little bit better. Service was typical for a Chinese spot. read more

My husband and I unintentionally saw Dumpling Kitchen Express while shopping in the Castro Valley Marketplace and was pleasantly surprised to see it there! They're still in soft opening mode when we came on 12/10. We got there about 15 mins before closing so we'll need to stop by again when it's grand opening! Since we got there super late, they didn't have everything on the menu left and I'm sure the food was sitting for a bit in the display case. Note that this is an express location so it's not a sit down restaurant - it's like dim sum to go! We tried some baos which were tasty. We liked the shumai the best out of everything we tried! We also ordered the pork soup dumplings but there was no soup inside (probably because we came end of the day so it was sitting for a bit). Everyone was super nice and very helpful as we were ordering! I was excited to see the frozen dumpling section too! Looking forward to trying those next time! The food was pretty good and prices were affordable for the Bay Area. The buns were actually soft and delicious. The family had their noodle soup and really enjoyed it. Also got the rice plate with 3 entrees and everything was better than Panda Express. So good variety of options and all were very enjoyable. I stumbled upon this place when I went into market. I ended up picking up two bags of frozen pork and chive dumplings to cook at home for dinner. I was impressed with how tender and flavorful the meat turned out. The delicate folds around the round shape makes it more appealing. I will return to try other varieties of dumplings. read more

My husband and I came here for a late lunch. We ordered: -Hot and Sour Soup -1 option plate Fried rice (they were out of brown) and Sweet and Sour Chicken -1 option plate Chow Mein and Broccoli Beef -4 Xiaolongbao dumplings -2 Pork and Napa cabbage dumplings -4 Shumai This was roughly $55 after tip- The two stars they got were for the price and quantity of food. There wasn't an over abundance of food but they weren't skimpy for the most part. Not off to a great start, the person serving the food was rude. She clearly was not happy while dishing up our meal. When my husband asked if they had utensils she motioned to the them like she had to tell him this for the thousandth time (which is my job not hers). This is annoying but can be overlooked if the food is good. I understand having to work food service on Saturday. It's not a good time. However.... The food was shockingly bad. Everything was oily. The SOUP was oily. The sauce on the sweet and sour chicken tasted like a cloyingly sweet ketchup, and it was soaking in it, making the breading soggy and gummy. The chicken was Christmas Vacation Turkey dry (Iykyk). The rice was bland. There was absolutely no salt or seasoning on the rice. The beef with broccoli was super bland and the beef was VERY chewy and everything was oily. Now on to the dumplings. They were all bland. It was WILD. I don't understand how they could be that bland and I'm half white. They were also inconsistent. Once I tasted the chicken and realized I couldn't eat it I grabbed two more dumplings as the first two I ate were bland but edible and I was severely punished for it. The xiaolongbao were melted. The dumpling wrappers were overcooked goop that I had to scrape off of the meat to make it edible. Pictures added of the goopy dumpling wrapper. I'm wish this could be different. I want there to be a successful restaurant there. I LOVE dim sum and have eaten a lot of it (I won't include a picture of myself for proof of my qualifications just trust me) and this is not a place I'll eat again. Someone else's review said it was on par with Panda Express and that just isn't true, Panda is infinitely better (and for the record Panda is not good). I don't write this to be cruel, I've owned a food service company before and I KNOW first hand how tough it is. Cooked thru & still has a crunch. - Egg fried rice was still moist & carrots & peas were not over cooked. - Custard is the bomb. Creamy & not eggy nor gelatinous consistency. The best part is the crust. It's not a standard pie crust. It had a phyllo dough texture that had a light crunch to it. Perfectly sweetened. - Chow mein was moist with veggies still had a crunch. The employee behind the counter was helping a customer . The employee looked at me & continue to help the customer. I stood there for 5-6 minutes without the employee saying anything to me. She had rang up the customer . The employee told the customer where the utensils and condiments were located. After waiting there , I had asked for an item. I stood there for another 5 minutes while getting the item. The employee rang up the items. The employee did not tell me where the utensils & the condiments were located like the previous customer. Nor, apologize for the wait. Also , As I was being rang up, the previous customer started talking to the employee while I was asking the employee a question. The employee continued to talk to the previous customer. As I was not there! I would of wished the employee would apologize for the rude previous customer for interrupting or say something along the lines how I was rudely interrupted. We were happy to see this place open because of our love for dumplings. I understood their cautioned service during and shortly after their soft opening, but there's been a general trend of slow service with us. I wonder if others feel this way. As someone who's worked in the service industry for 10+ years, it feels like lazy service, or something more. I'm not sure how else to explain it. Today my husband came home very upset, explaining that he was looking toward to getting dinner there. After patienly waiting for their attention, they passed him up and attended to a Caucasian customer who came much later. He left ignored and upset but decided to return to tell them how upsetting it was. The grocery store and wine clerk both overheard his response. After that, they made no apologies about completely ignoring him over other customers and proceeded with business as usual. We both looked forward to their dumplings but sadly won't be returning after so such poor, seemingly racist service. Whether it's intentional or not, it needs to he recognized by their staff. Yes!!!, this dim sum place finally open!! I was so excited to get there and grab some Siu Mai, BBQ Pork Buns and the Chinese fried dough. OMG the Chinese fried dough was perfect warm and crispy. The price for Dim Sums are reasonable better than Panda express - more and fresh. They also have frozen Dim Sum for sale - so sweet! I went there today around 12:30pm, but left with super disappointment and without getting any food. Service is slow, to say the least. There is only one worker working. There is no sign of where the line starts, so customers come from different directions waiting patiently and politely to be serviced. Additionally, there is hardly any fresh food in the hot trays, although it just opened for business. Beef broccoli looks overcooked; salt and pepper tofu and fried rice look dry as if they were leftovers, and there is no chow mein. If the owner(s) want the business to be successful, they need to pay more attention to improving their customer service and filling the food trays more often with fresh entrees. read more

Dumpling kitchen is our current go-to for dumplings. Whether getting frozen for later or the prepared for immediacy they are all very good with excellent value. The bbq pork bao is my favorite along with the shrimp and pork shumai. My wife prefers the vegetable bao and shrimp har gow. They are all delicious and worth the trip.
