Today I visited my old hometown of San Lorenzo and then found this restaurant nearby. This place reminded me so much of my childhood. I remember when I was a kid I would go to this one takeout spot (Chef Kwong) that was also nearby and I would always order the beef chow mein and orange chicken combo. WOW - this restaurant has been popping up on my Yelp for awhile now, but never ventured near it to try, until last month. Was craving soup and I am very grateful that I finally made time to eat here. Came on a weekend night and no one was inside. Was seated right away and ordered the following - War wonton soup - fabulous and soooo flavorful the best I have ever had - Egg Rolls - pretty good - Chow Mein - soooo delicious and filled that comfort craving - Egg Fu Young - have not had one in many many years and it was to die for 100% will be coming here again especially for the soup. Really good Chinese food. Not spectacular, but definitely the best in the area. Warning!! The prices you pay with DoorDash on Yelp are substantially higher than what they have on their menu. DoorDash charges a whopping 30% for their service!! So the restaurant has to raise their prices. I have included a photo of their online ordering link and a Q code. Use one of those options. If you're getting takeout, there is no legitimate reason to be using DoorDash. It's just the only option on Yelp. We got the happy family special, which was very good. The Glazed Honey Walnut Prawns, which were also excellent. Barbecued pork chow mein, which was pretty good, very thick noodles. We also got the house, special chow mein, and the wonton soup. We came here once before and had a great experience but this time the food was mediocre at best. Got the combo chow mein, sesame chicken everyone seems to love, and the fried calamari appetizer. Calamari was the worst - had a very fishy taste and just overall not enjoyable. Chow mein was fine, if a bit oily, and the sesame chicken was fine, but nothing that would force me to come back. That said, I'll give them another go if I'm craving Chinese food and will just hope it rebounds back to how it was before. read more

There's a shared parking lot in the back of the building. There was only one waitress. She offered me a table, and gave me a menu and ice water. I just ordered a medium sized bowl of Wor Won Ton Soup. Service was pretty fast. My soup was ready in about 5 mins. It was a beautiful bowl of Won Ton Soup. It was loaded with shredded veggies, some shrimp, plump dumplings, and thin strips of meat. The broth was mild, and needed a dash of soy sauce sauce. When the waitress asked me how I liked the soup, I told her the strips of meat were a bit tough and hard to eat. She adjusted the bill, and gave me a discount on my soup. She apologized for the overcooked meat in the soup. Thank you, I will come again. read more

Decided to give Hunan a try after craving some Chinese food, and I'm glad I did! Ordered for pickup and the food was ready quick. My bf and I tried the sesame chicken, beef and broccoli, beef chow mein and steamed rice (not pictured). The beef chow mein is the best I've had hands down. The noodles were thick and cooked to perfection. Flavor was on point not too salty and the beef within was melt in your mouth tender. The beef and broccoli was good but definitely had more broccoli than beef. The sesame chicken wasn't my favorite. It was a little too crispy and sticky in the way that it was hard to chew. Way to go San Lorenzo! My cousin, a native of the Village, hooked it up & told me about this place. They have terrific lunch specials which includes 2 different soup options, entree, steamed of fried rice. Reasonable price! The restaurant is clean & owners are friendly. Many people walking in & out ordering & picking up food by 11:30am. I was impressed. I ordered the Sesame Chicken & it was delicious. I enjoyed the Egg Drop Soup for my soup option. I forgot to take a photo of the soup! I dined-in so I could relax & enjoy a bit of solo time. I will definitely return & try out other dishes. They were very friendly and offered to bring out my food next time because I had my baby with me and taking out the car seat just to pick up food can be a hassle. My 3 stars were for the food. San Lorenzo folks already know this local institution. I have stopped in here over the years for good comforting food. If you dine in, it's a no-frills restaurant that is small and busy with families and lots of takeout traffic. If you take out, they will likely already have your meal boxed and bagged. Off to the food review! 2.7/5 Mongolian beef - Was hoping for some tender beef with some slightly Blanched onions and veggies. Sadly everything is overcooked and with sauce slathered all over it. Making everything just slime-y and chewy. Not that good but still edible 2/5 crab meet cheese puffs - Chewy, and stale exterior makes it really tough to bite through. To make it worse each puff has almost no filling and more of an empty shell. 3.8/5 Beef chowfun - Pretty standard chow fun, noodles tasted great and beef was decent as well. Bean sprouts and green onions also complement the noodles quite well. 3.5/5 House fried rice - The portion was huge on this. It was okay, a bit too much one flavor which is soy sauce but it's still pretty decent. The mixed in meat and veggies changes the textures up every bite, makes it never get too boring. 2.8/5 sautéed green beans - the beans didn't taste fresh at all. I just ordered hot and sour soup which was OK. I am not sure if they use MSG as it left metallic taste. The shrimp in garlic sauce had so much of sauce, so I saved the sauce. Next day I sauted the veges with ginger/garlic in little oil and added the leftover sauce for the veges. Hidden gem in San Lorenzo! I stopped by Hunan Restaurant for their lunch special and was really impressed with both the food and the value. I tried the sweet and sour pork and Mongolian beef, and both dishes were excellent . Freshly cooked, flavorful, and served piping hot. The sweet and sour pork had a perfect balance of tangy sauce and crispy texture, while the Mongolian beef was tender with a rich, savory flavor and plenty of onions and green onions. Each lunch special also comes with soup, rice ( steamed of pork fried rice), and a small appetizer, making it a great deal for the price. The portions were generous enough to leave full and still have leftovers. Service was friendly and fast, and the restaurant was clean and comfortable with plenty of seating. Overall, a fantastic spot for classic Chinese comfort food at a great price. I'll definitely be coming back to try more of their lunch specials and other dishes! read more

Sept 2023 review. My husband and I gave Hunan 2 last chances to see if they have improved. On Friday I had ordered a Crispy Chicken lunch special and a Mongolian Beef Special and they were both delicious! No problems what so ever. I had a $5 off coupon for any order through my special Door Dash benefits when you use a World or World Elite MasterCard. So today my husband took the turn of ordering from Hunan but there was not lunch specials. It was not good. The order consisted of Fried Prawns, Pork Fried Rice and Crispy Chicken. The Crispy Chicken had traces of bones on a few of the pieces I ate and my husband said there were shells inside the prawns. Also he put in the notes that he wanted hot mustard and it was not included. The quality of the food has tanked. It is not the same delicious food anymore as it was when we were regularly coming into Vanessa's store to eat in person. Sadly we will not order from Hunan again as we have been checking out other places and the Chinese Food had some better taste. Yes there are lots of positive ratings for her business but as a picky foodie, both my husband and I, it's just a no for us. read more
