Abel and his team are very nice and easy to work with. My work involved clearing a front yard clogged storm drain and building a retaining wall in my backyard. The team did a good job, however things to keep in mind: Make sure to get a detailed written quote for all work to be performed, be very clear about the work you expect how it should look and work when finished, and keep an eye on the work as it is progressing to make sure the job is being done according to how you desire it. If your project involves dirt removal, ensure these costs are captured correctly. I had several cost increases due to Abel's miscalculation of dirt volume. Also, I highly suggest speaking with Abel in one voice. My mistake was that my wife and I both talked to Abel about our project at different times due to our job schedules, which only confused him, and we did not get a quote before work started. Our bad. Another thing to consider doing is, to make sure on the quote to document that any repairs to broken pipes, cut wires, etc., are to be repaired at SimpleScape's time and expense and to your satisfaction. It might even be helpful to demonstrate to Abel that everything, such as sprinklers, valves, etc., are in working order before any work starts. This will avoid any responsibility issues should anything not work after the project is completed. This was an issue for me. Be prepared to validate with Abel that everything is in (or not) working order before the completion of your project and, most certainly, before you pay for the work. Also make sure they tidy up and collect their tools. This was an issue for me, and I ended up having to tidy up and repair things after the job was finished. read more

Work entailed tree trimming, backyard overgrowth control, sprinker system troubleshooting, repair and drip line add-ons, and planting over 100 quart sized spring flowers in the front and back yards. I wish I could give zero stars. I hired Abel and his team to replace the grass in my small backyard. At first everything was fine, but at the end of the job, the sprinklers needed to be repaired and he did not return. I followed up and followed up, and he kept saying he was coming, but he didn't show up when he said he was going to and the brand new grass started to die in patches as it was not receiving any water (the sprinklers needed the part he was supposed to come to put in). I had to chase him and chase him and send him photos of the dying grass. I was so upset after spending thousands of dollars watching the brand new lawn die. I was trying to hand water it with a hose, but this was not nearly enough for new grass. Finally, he said he was coming and he will replace the patches of grass that have died. When he finally comes and replaces the patches, its not the same type of grass! The new patches look nothing like the rest of the lawn! I send him photos and tell him he needs to fix the patches so I do not have random squares of grass that is different than all the rest. We went back and forth forever - he insists it is the same even though it is very clear the blades and color are different than the rest of the lawn. He told me to wait 6 months to let the grass grow in and that if it is not the same looking then, he will replace it. *That is the only thing he said to me - there is no other instructions or anything else said at this point.* Fast forward six months (now), half the grass is dead. I sent him a message today and said I was following up on his guaranty and sent him photos of the half dead lawn. He said it is my fault because I "let it go" and overwatered it. I told him he is the one who programmed the sprinklers and I never changed a thing. He then lied and said he gave me full instructions about how the watering needed to change two weeks after installation - there was NEVER a conversation about the water timer. I have no idea how to work it, and I had no idea it needed to be change. He did not have any conversation with me and just completely lied today, the same as he did about saying he was coming to finish the job again and again and the same as he did about using different grass. So basically, thousands of dollars completely wasted, the worst customer service experience I have had ever with someone who is a liar and not trustworthy at all. He has no accountability and will blame you for his own mistakes. He does not show up when he says he will and if something goes wrong he will find a way to make it your fault. Buyer beware. I don't like writing bad reviews because I understand the weight they hold for small businesses however every single time it rains I'm reminded of what a crappy job Abel did to my yard. 2 years ago I paid him $10,000 to xeriscape my backyard. As they started to lay the DG I asked Abel if I'd have issues with weeds because I noticed they didn't put weed guard down before pouring the dirt. He literally looked me in the face and said I wouldn't have any issues with weeds at all. I should've known to call him on his shit then. A month after they completed my yard it rained. And all of the weeds start sprouting essentially wrecking my yard that I paid so much money for. I had called and texted Abel about it then but no response. It wasn't until I came on here and wrote a review about my experience that he called within a minute of me posting. He came out, cleaned up the yard and said he'd offer me 6 months of free maintenance. Well I only needed him out two more times after that because conveniently it stopped raining for the season and no weeds popped up. Fast forward to last year I asked if he could come out and clean up the yard because the weeds were getting out of control again and I was tired of pulling them myself. He wanted to charge me $450 to clean up the weeds. Mind you, I don't feel I should have to pay him anything for his negligence and cutting corners as a business. I paid it unfortunately because I was tired of looking at the weeds. And now, here we are again. It has rained and my yard is something my family and I avoid because it is covered in weeds. I feel so upset that we paid him so much money, that I trusted him and that we can't spend time in our yard anymore unless we want to fork over hundreds of dollars. My front and backyard was a jungle filled with weeds, succulents and mulch burried under weeds. After getting a couple quotes, I chose Abel becuase not only was it a deal but he had great communication. Set up an appointment for a walk around, we went over the work, gave recommendations on what product was better explained the process of the job. He gave me reasonable prices for each job I wanted. Other quotes were giving me a ridiculous price for just cleaning and sod, Abel's offer included clean, sod, mulch, tree trim, and irrigation. As soon as I got my emailed estimate and approved, his crew started within a couple of days. They got the whole front/backyard cleaned within a day. Great communication on progress and Abel would walk me around at end days work on the progress. Explained any issues clearly and extra charges were reasonable. He recommended some changes on my request for DG instead of mulch and I agreed, gave a reasonable price difference. Afrer every payment I would receive an update reciept/invoice. Update to say: The reason why I am changing my rating is because there seems to be a lot of weeds growing since there was no weed barrier placed under the mulch that was placed in the yard. It seems we were supposed to ask for it? It was our understanding this was commonly done when mulch is placed to avoid those annoying weeds that make yards look horrible and are hard to get rid of under mulch. We also have old grass growing on the DG that was placed. When we contacted Able to come and add the weed barrier it took a few text messages and phone calls to get a call back. After they came and installed the weed barrier the yard looked really bad. The mulch was not covering the weed barrier and the yard looks undone. I contacted Able via text and showed the pictures of the work done. He said this was done because we had vegetation growing and they would have to "remove all the plants, flowers and bark" but we had vegetables growing and they didn't want to take those out, which I understood however we were not informed of this when the weed barrier was placed. I even offered to take out all the vegetable plants from the yard myself. I also told him I did not expect the work be done for free I just needed it done. I received a response that Abel was extremely busy but would come out to check the yard and get the work done. After 2 weeks of not hearing from him I texted him again to ask on the status on when he would be out to fix the yard. He did not respond until a week later via phone call and said he would be here Thursday or Friday. It has now been two weeks since the phone call and I haven't heard anything. I didn't even get a courtesy phone call or text saying he would not be here on the days he said. I had given him 4 stars but at this point I will be updating my review and will need to find another landscaper that can finish the job and is more reliable. I would recommend Abel and Simple Scape, but my advice is make sure you ask for all you need in the initial job phase to avoid the lack of response if anything needs to be fixed. After reading a couple of there reviews here it seems that is one of the issues, the lack of communication and response. We used Able and his crew to install sprinklers and sod in our back yard. At first it looked great. In about two weeks large portions of the lawn looked like it was dying. Obviously the sprinklers were not covering the lawn and it was dying. We contacted Able over and over. Each time he stated they would return and look at the problem. Able claimed they would stop by Monday, no show. Wednesday, no show. The following week no show. By about the fifth call Able wouldn't respond to calls or e-mails. Eventually we called someone else to correct the problem. The gentleman that corrected the problem stated we were at least 5 sprinklers short. We had the sprinklers installed and the lawn has for the most part recovered. If there was option to give 0 stars that's what I would give Able and his crew at Simplescape Lawn and Garden. If you decide to use this company just be aware you will be paying a second time to correct the work that was never done correctly in the first place. Also be aware, once Able has been paid, you are on your own. When you call him and explain whats going wrong he will blow you off and eventually never even respond to your messages.
