Bottom line: gross, inedible cake. I recently moved to the area, and entrusted Simply Desserts with a custom birthday cake. I did so based upon the images on her website, and the reviews here. The proprietor uses cheap, gross ingredients to make flavorless cakes and she cannot create the desserts her website claims. Basic details of the design, colors and shape for example she did not even ask me about and made them up on her own. The image I gave her to put on top of the cake came out printed in a weird blue tint- not at all the colors of the original photo....that was the weirdest part, the cake looked nothing like the other cakes pictured on the website. Not professionaly done at all, it was a mess. And the shape of the cake was something she decided without my input. I was not queried about customization at any point- I guess my cake wasn't as important as others. It got worse when we cut into it...and tried to eat it... She uses sub-par quality materials and markets them as gourmet. What was sold as "buttercream frosting" is in fact the grainy, sugary store-bought product that comes in cans and leaves a filmy coating in your mouth. Not something people want more slices of! It was disgusting and inedible. The chocolate cake layers had no actual chocolate flavor. And the "Bavarian Cream filing?" Vanilla jello pudding. Yep, you read that right. vanilla jello pudding was sold as "bavarian cream" for layering between the cake. Wal Mart could have made a better cake....I could have made a better cake. To say I was embarassed and disappointed is an understatement. And if you're comfortable with dealing with a vendor who works out of their home, be my guest, but I'm not even sure that meets the minimum requirements of the Virginia Health Code. This is why they do not want you to pick the cake up and they would rather deliver. Please if you want a beautiful, memorable and delicious cake, stay far away from this "bakery". There are many many other cakeries in NoVA to choose from. She ruined a birthday and she could ruin your wedding too. read more

Went to the grand opening. We are locals that will not set foot back in the Gainesville location. The owners/managers were super nice to the people they recognized...the others, (their potential new customers) not so much as a "welcome". Overpriced cupcakes that were not anything but ordinary...mine was on the dry side. That particular day they were offering cupcake decorating for the kids (not complimentary, I may add). First we had to wait for the cupcakes to finish baking and then the young lady at the decorating table was not very friendly. Folks, your product isn't great & your customer service is non-existent. read more

I discovered Simply Desserts at a Yelp event where they were giving away cake samples. I really liked their frosting and saved their business card. I paid them $100 for a birthday cake and cupcakes for my kid's birthday party. My wife placed the order and asked for the cake and cupcakes to have raspberry filling and the same frosting as the samples at the yelp event. What I got was a huge disappointment. The cake was dry and slightly burnt at the edges. There was very little raspberry filling. The frosting was disgusting and not at all what I had at the yelp event, and the cupcakes had no filling. It was inedible. I felt embarrassed for serving this to my guests. I ended up throwing away all of the cupcakes. They were so bad that I didn't even want to give them away. I emailed the owner, Kimberly, and expressed my disappointment that the cake was not made to our instructions and was completely different than what was served at the yelp event. She emailed me and said that the cake was made with a swiss buttercream frosting. I told her that we never asked for swiss buttercream and had no idea what that even is. It turns out that swiss buttercream is the flavorless unsweetened whipped-butter "frosting" that many pastry chefs are using now a days. I have no idea why anyone would put that on a cake. It's horrible and should be banned from cake making. It was absolutely not what I sampled at the yelp event. She was very apologetic but insisted that she made the cake correctly and offered only a $25 credit off of a future order. I really hate it when a business screws up and offers a partial credit on a future order instead of a refund. They're basically forcing you to do business with them again when you don't want to (sunken cost). She later offered to make a dozen cupcakes free instead of a $25 credit. I told her it didn't seem fare to replace a $100 order with a dozen cupcakes when she made both the cupcakes and cake incorrectly. She then agreed to provide 2 dozen cupcakes for free. I didn't appreciate being forced to continue doing business with her but I accepted that since that was all she was offering. Since I had no need for 2 dozen cupcakes, I had to split that among two future events. I spent 2 hours driving to Fairfax and back twice. I don't get why following our simple instructions on a cake is so hard or why she didn't provide a full refund when we notified her of the mistake. I'm giving 2 stars only because the birthday cake and cupcakes LOOKED good (although they tasted awful) and because the replacement cupcakes were done correctly and tasted good. read more

We just got married in June and Kimberly did our Cake! It was amazing and she spent a lot of time and effort helping us to figure out what we wanted before she even set foot n the kitchen. It arrived at our venue in perfect condition despite the fact that it was 104 degrees. There is really nothing about the process that she didn't make easy for us. If you're looking for a cake for an event, I'd check her out. She did a wonderful and professional job. She gets 5 stars because about 3 weeks before the wedding, we expanded our order and asked her to make cake pop party favors. She took it in stride, said no problem and did a great job on those too. OH, and I forgot... The cakes don't only look great but they taste AMAZING! the carrot cake literally tasted exactly like my mother's. read more

Had a weird experience here the other night... stopped by around 9:05 to grab a dessert after a later dinner on a Friday. Folding sign in front said "we're open" despite now seeing on the Yelp page that they close at 9? On the door there are little hearts obscuring the closing time decals on the door... I assume they have adjusted closing times for the summer season, but they are hard to read when it's dark outside and there's light coming from inside. As there were other patrons inside, lights shining bright, and people manning the registers, figured it was a safe bet they were open. Picked up a pina colada cupcake. Upon walking out, found out my boyfriend was really upset that a female employee had walked by him and muttered under her breath in a nasty tone, "It's 9, we're closed...". Not thrilled about that treatment... even if you are closed, there's a polite way to say that. As for the cupcake, it was pretty bland. I read that there was supposed to be pineapple involved, but the only mild flavor I could detect was coconut and even that wasn't very strong. Could have used more coconut, more pineapple, and/or some rum! I like supporting local businesses, so I think I'll try again, but definitely a different item. For the price, the one I had definitely didn't measure up... the sugar bomb ones from the grocery store are better. Fingers crossed for next time... hopefully I won't have another awkward service experience. read more

Stopped in last night after dinner, on the suggestion of friends. I was DYING for some good cheesecake... And let me tell you, the lemon blueberry cheesecake was just the thing I needed. Perfectly sweet and dense. My sister had the red velvet cupcake with caramel buttercream. She doesn't like frosting or buttercream (freak) so I tried the buttercream and I could have just eaten that. So perfect. My mom had the lemon raspberry champagne cupcake and she said it was AMAZING. I also had the carrot cake cupcake this morning. It was gifted to us on the way out of the door by the very nice guy working. Perfect breakfast treat before I took one of my finals. Kimberly was wonderful to work with and couldn't have made things easier for us (no small thing when planning a wedding!). Simply Desserts provides terrific value for the dollar and we felt we got way more than our money's worth (including a cake topper for our anniversary!). The wedding cake was a carrot cake and it was delicious! The cupcakes were the centerpieces (on fabulous stands) for each of the tables at our reception and they were not only the best anyone had ever had but they were gorgeous! I can highly recommend going with filled cupcakes. Kimberly can help you decide on the cake, frosting and filling combinations that are best (and most popular). A year after our wedding we were at a birthday party that featured the most incredible Corvette cake anyone had ever seen. Guests were taking photos like crazy. That was all well and good but people got really excited when they started TASTING the Corvette (as heartbreaking as it was to cut into and ruin the phenomenal artwork including mini replicas of the license plates on the birthday "boy's" actual car!). Everyone wanted to know who made the cake - as the business cards started being passed around by the hostess I was thrilled to see that the car cake was made by Simply Desserts; it came as no surprise to me that not only does Kimberly help to make weddings fabulous, she also does intricate custom cake designing that would make any special occasion a success. Lastly, my niece brought cupcakes to my bridal shower from Georgetown Cupcakes (you know, the famous location feature on TV that people line up around the block for). If you want a beautiful and tasty wedding cake you must use Simply Desserts. My wedding cake was PERFECT!! It looked better than I had envisioned it. The day of the cake tasting I picked the flavors I wanted. Then I showed the baker a picture of a cake I wanted. She also asked questions about my colors, my wedding dress, and other décor. I had pictures of my wedding dress, and customized wedding shoes on my iPhone. After seeing all those things the baker slightly changed the design of the cake to reflect me and my personality. She said she could make the bow on top the cake look exactly like the pink bow that was on my customized shoes I had shown her. Since my fiancé wasn't able to attend the tasting they let me take samples of the cakes and fillings home, so that I could double check with him that the selections I had made were ok. They responded to all email questions and concerns quickly. Talk about great customer service! The day of the wedding, as promised, the bow on top the cake looked like the pink bow on my wedding shoes. I'm so glad I have pictures to always remember how beautiful my cake was. Fantastic small business to work with. Kimberly was amazing! I contacted her to make a cake and desserts for a brunch baby shower. I had some specific theme ideas and she knocked it out of the park. We were also able to do a tasting with her take home tasting box. Such a fun way to choose the cake and filling. I also asked for character cookies to go with our "Woodland" themed baby shower and when they arrived I was speechless at the detail and how adorable they were. My guests were floored by how good the cookies tasted. I also chose dessert shooter cups in three flavors and had nothing left over! The cake was not only beautiful but moist and flavorful. Cutting and serving was very easy to do and again my guest could not believe that something that looked that incredible was also delicious. I brought my 3 year old here during their opening weekend and was not impressed with the selection available for the size of the store but still wanted to try what they do have. I grabbed 4 cupcakes and a NY cheesecake to go. The cheesecake was a disappointment, but I was really surprised with the red velvet cupcake. I never liked red velvet, but Simply Dessert's red velvet cupcake was delicious! I wasn't impressed with the lemon champagne cupcake and did not taste the vanilla cupcake but I'd come back and get another red velvet. We definitely expected a lot more grandeur for their grand opening weekend (especially based on the Facebook event invite) but we weren't there for freebies so no big deal (but I would've liked to get that free cupcake as advertised!). Everything was rather pricy but consistent with the area (however, I'm still trying to justify paying more for a smaller cupcake than what I can get from Georgetown Cupcakes and Confectionary Cupcakery). I'd like to see a discount price for purchasing a half dozen or dozen like some of the other cupcake places. Everyone was nice enough, no one was rude but I was disappointed that no one offered my daughter a balloon since she saw several kids with one. 3 stars for the surprisingly delicious red velvet cupcake, nice clean open store and location. We happened across Simply Desserts by chance, and we were so glad that we did. I had a vision in my mind of what I wanted- a modern Art Deco cake, to fit the theme of our wedding. The cake was super important to me (probably second only to the dress, ha!!). Jen from Simply Desserts sketched the cake that we dreamed of, and then they actually made it happen. Everyone was AMAZED by our cake; aesthetically, it was phenomenal. During our tasting, we got to sample a number of fresh cakes and frosting/filling combinations. Everything was really good, but we opted for two flavors: red velvet with caramel cream cheese frosting, and a lemon champagne cake with a raspberry coulis and raspberry Swiss buttercream. Fast forward to the wedding day.. this was hands down the best wedding cake we've ever had! Our guests raved, and the venue noted that they do a ton of weddings (over 80/year), and this was one of the best cakes they've seen/tasted too. We really couldn't have been happier. They have a great variety of delicious desserts at reasonable specialty shop prices. They also make beautiful custom cakes. I have used Simply Desserts twice since moving to northern Virginia in August, and I love their work. We ordered our wedding cake on short notice, and received a beautiful (pictures added) tasty dessert that complimented the rest of the desserts we offered at our reception. Throughout the night, we received compliments about how delicious our wedding cake was. Having attended several weddings over the past few years (at that age where most of my childhood and college friends are getting married), I could not have been happier about the result. I recently used Simply Desserts to supply baked goods (an assortment of whoopie pies) for a company fundraiser, and their desserts were scooped up before I even had a chance to get one myself. However, before dropping off the whoopie pies, I did have a chance to see the wonderful work put into them and each set of the assortment was fragrant in the mouth-watering sense of the word. While I did not get to eat one, my co-workers told me that the desserts were delicious. I am not a baked goods connoisseur by any means, but the folks at Simply Desserts are always quick to explain the up-(and down)-side of selecting certain ingredients or elements over another option, without favoring one over the other (think the fondant vs. buttercream debate). The more details you provide, the better experience you will have with this wonderful company. I will use them again. read more

September 2016, my mother ordered a beautiful cake for my baby shower. The day of my shower, the baby unexpectedly arrived! My mom brought me cake in the hospital and it was amazing. Since then, we ordered a half birthday cake and for Samuel's first birthday, I worked with Kimberly to create a cake for 50 guests, cookies as favors, along with a smash cake for the birthday boy! I sent her pictures of ideas I had for the cake and cookies and Kimberly was so easy and flexible to work with. We communicated through email, on the phone and in person. On a couple of occasions I needed to change ingredients to the smash cake due to a new allergy my son developed. She made the necessary changes and I felt comfortable and confident that my son would be safe with what she created for the birthday boy! All guests were impressed by the gorgeous cake, which looked like it served WAY more than 50 guests, and cookies and were even more amazed by the taste of everything. Some guests said they had to go back for a second piece of cake because it was so delicious. We are so thankful for Kimberly and her staff at Simply Desserts. We will continue to go to her for all treats, cakes, special occasions and even for an every day sweet tooth. Thank you so much!!! read more
