11.8.24 at Windward Mall parking lot

Food truck Friday in Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii... Ko'olau Night Market happens on the second Friday of the month. It's too bad that November 8, 2024 was the last event for the year. Simply Ono (food truck) happened to be at the Windward Mall parking lot. I read a review stating that Simply Ono had been in Mililani. Wow! I'm so happy that it was on the Windward side where there's lots of free parking! I ordered the Prime Rib plate for $22.50 (including tax). It was juicy and tender! My green salad was fresh and the rice was just right! Thanks for being reasonably priced, convenient, and quick! I watched "uncle" patiently and carefully slice the prime rib! "Auntie" was so nice - she wrote each order in her notebook, treated each customer with kindness, called us each by name, and had a sincere smile! Thank you so much for a wonderful experience! I felt the Aloha Spirit and really enjoyed the homestyle meal! I also appreciate the fresh rosemary seasoning!

June 2025 End cut was really seasoned and tasty. Salad was so good and the mash was homemade.

Prime Rib Plate was so ono. I like the end cut and the seasoning was great. The homemade mash potatoes were great as well and can't forget the Japanese potato salad. First time trying this wagon at the Manawili Night Market and I'm glad I tried them. Can't wait for the next night market.

Celebrating the first day of Fall... Found this truck at the Mililani Town Association Autumn Festival Craft Fair at Recreation 5 and what a lovely setting to celebrate the first day of fall...I should've started here first before exploring into the craft area as I heard but didn't realize the massive portions they dish out. On the menu tonight is Prime Rib, Rack of Lamb, Okinawan Shoyu Pork, Furikake Crusted Island Mahimahi and what I got is Beef Stroganoff over pasta and Garlic Bread and I got the last order for the night yeah!!! One reason I should've eaten first, there was much more seating and now the obvious the massive portion given...I could've walked it off and not fall into the lurking food coma. These delightful couple working hard non stop filled the container to the most ultimate brim that I've never seen anywhere else...and to think there's pasta under the coating of Beef Stroganoff was quite overwhelming but I did give it the Simply Ono try. So nice and creamy like I'd remember this old school classic which is one of the reason I ordered it as I can't recall the last time finding it on any menu, it's loaded with chunks of beef and so much mushrooms this was a total comfort meal and no there wasn't any room for their dessert Warm Bread Pudding with Creamy Vanilla Sauce sadly... Thank you!

    Salad Nicoise

I was just looking for a small bite to eat for dinner, as I had a large lunch and wasn't too hungry. So I headed to the Hawaii Kai Farmers Market at Kaiser High School on a Tuesday. They're open from 4-6pm. Simply Ono was one of the food trucks there, and as I browsed the menu, I spotted the Salad Nicoise (Mahimahi, capers, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, green beans) for $8.00. I've had this salad before on the mainland and it's delicious, so I thought I'd give it a try. The salad did not actually have any green salad, like previous ones that I've had. This was much more heartier, with chunks of mahi-mahi, cubed potatoes, green beans, etc. It was very delicious! It came in a bento container along with a taro roll, which was also very yummy. It was the perfect amount of food for me. I had read that it's a mother and son team. They were both extremely friendly and the guy was hilarious! I would definitely return to try some of their other items.

    Shoyu Pork plate $16

3 words: Okinawan Shoyu Pork ($16)! Every last Wednesday of the month, Pearl Country Club has a night market and this food truck is always there. I've come here twice now and have gotten the same thing. The pork is tender, falls apart and has such good flavor. Portion wise, I do wish they gave a little more because I can eat the whole plate in one sitting. (Hehe) I love the Japanese potato salad as well. Potato salad isn't something you find at many places since mac salad is so popular here so I'm so glad I can get my potato fix here! My mom has gotten their corn chowder with garlic bread ($7) and she's loved it! It's nice and chunky with tons of corn. The garlic bread is a nice added touch to dip and eat. The couple that runs the food truck is always so sweet. You can tell they put love and care into their food. The wife individually wraps each fork with a napkin and a twist tie. The husband makes the food and serves the food. They're always so nice & happy to serve you. If corn chowder or shoyu pork isn't your thing, they're also known for their prime rib! I honestly don't know how I can try anything I'm so hooked on their shoyu pork.

So tasty, high quality, reasonably priced, really nice couple. I loved the chunky herbs they used and I got a huge chunk of filet for $18! They were at UH prep rally at the Varsity Building. We will be coming again next week if they return!

    Our first encounter

At Koolau Night Market at Windward mall, and know how you just get a feeling to stop at a food place? This is the place! We saw Aunty and Uncle and already knew we was going get dinner from here. We got 2 baked spaghetti, the prime rib and shrimp pasta. We didn't get home to Nalo until 830p, but the food was still warm...My kids macked the spaghetti!. So grateful we happened to come by, and now we hooked. If you get a chance, go early and check them out.

Turkey Plate. Ask if they cooked it or store bought
    GLENN F.

Went to say hi to Harris and Cora today. Get to scratch Turkey off my craving list. Going sleep after, no calls please! (That's my feelings before I got home, ate my plate and served the other Turkey lunch to my mom and aunty) Putting Turkey back on my craving list. (I'm wishing I didn't buy a second plate for my mom and aunty) This salty, turkey meat is not freshly cooked, it's processed, water has been injected into it to make it tender, and it's the kind that is pre-cooked purchased. The stuffing is even more salty, I couldn't even taste the flavor of it. I'm sorry, I can't recommend the Turkey plate from this lunch wagon.

With the dine in lockout in place we decided to try a lunch wagon and eat in our car. Simply Ono is a mom and son operation. Very friendly owners. Located near the John A Burns School of Medicine I had the Hawaiian plate #2 and my wife had the Ahi patties. I have to concur with my wife the ahi was a bit spicy. My plate which consisted of lau lau, lomi lomi salmon, beef. stew, kalua pig and rice. The all items except the lau lau is of average taste. The lau lau is deserving of a four star rating. It had a the right mix of pork, pork fat to luau leaf ratio. It had no butter fish. But it was still good.

We finally got to try the Roast Prime Rib plate after hearing so many friends say how delicious and what a great deal at only $11! The verdict is in, not only is it a great deal, but our gang from the office really LOVED it!!! You can't beat sitting down to prime rib cooked to perfection! It was so tasty and juicy! You gotta eat it there after it is plated up! Not only did we love the prime rib, the dressing on the salad was delicious too! The salad was fresh and thumbs up to their salad dressing! Our co-worker chose mashed potatoes for his side and boy did it look good! He REALLY enjoyed it! I think I'm going to try the mashed potatoes next time. Creamy skin-on mashed potatoes! Yummers!!! Roast Prime Rib Au Jus and Horseradish with Mashed Potatoes is a Thursday special! There are a lot of other menu choices to satisfy everyone's palate and budget! Simply Ono is located in the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) Cafe Waiola. Breakfast 7:00am - 10:30am Monday - Friday Lunch 10:30am - 3:00pm Monday - Friday Saturday & Sunday - Closed (Open for Catering) There is metered street parking outside. Bring coins to feed the meter! We all loved the Roast Prime Rib Au Jus and Horseradish with Mashed Potatoes. Hope you do too! Is it Thursday yet???

    New York fried steak

I never knew that the John A. Burns Medical School had a public cafeteria until I was invited to lunch. It's on the ground level and quite spacious with two eateries, one being Simply Ono. There's a lot of public parking, metered. They have a rotating menu so check out their website for daily specials. They have a variety of plate lunches from fish dishes to sandwiches and soups. I tried their seared ahi with a wasabi sesame sauce, served with rice and green salad. I was impressed with the amount of fish for $9.50. It was really fresh and nicely sliced pieces of ahi. I also had the brie and pear sandwich, which came on wheat bread for $4.50. I could have made this at home to be honest but it was still dang yummy. They had a perfected ratio of ooey gooey brie cheese to bread. A few more slices of pear would have been nice, but it was simply ono. Overall, I was more than satisfied with our food choices. I will say, I think most of their items are made ahead and re-warmed when ordered. But that does make the process speedy. Service was ok, you basically counter order. Good value though, I'd come again.

Since Corona virus is happening and cant dine in the restaurants till maybe april I needed to leave the house for awhile so I saw this lunchwagon on yelp as well as frolic hawaii website so decided to check them out if they give alot for the price the owners are friendly and polite. I had the ahi patties with ponzu sauce mac salad and rice and my husband had the Hawn plate #2. Had beef stew laulau, lomi salmon, and kalua pig and rice. The patties were a little spicy but I could handle it. The beef stew I tasted it was good ask my husband how was the rest of the food he said the lomi salmon could have a little more salt but other than that was good. Will be back to try their different menu on the different days. Sorry took out the lau lau.

New York Steak Katsu ($10 incl tax): really is ono!! Skip the soggy brown rice and get white rice instead.
    Jack W.

    1. VERDICT/VALUE They take credit card and while some meals will cost you, $10 or less gets you most meals (and they're pretty good) fast - what's not to like about that?? 2. FOOD With the choice of two food trucks (Koi and Simply Ono), I thought I would give the one with no line a try. Isn't that a bad thing? Not in this case! New York Steak Katsu ($10 including tax): comes with your choice of white or brown rice, your choice of salads, and of course, a deep fried strip of New York steak. The brown rice was too moist (i.e. soggy) and the mayo in the mac salad made up for it somewhat, but HUZZAH - the steak was just right! Crunchy crust mixed with tender steak on the inside...even my co-workers were raving about it and wanting to get another plate of their own of it! 3. SERVICE It's a food truck - no long conversations here, but the service was nice, fast, no unneeded upselling, and as I mentioned, takes credit card unlike some (who carries cash these days?!). 4. ATMOSPHERE In this case, there wasn't any seating around Simpy Ono being a food truck and all. You're surrounded by happy people looking forward to getting some great grindz and that's always a good thing. Will be trying other dishes again soon!

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.

He is always our first stop of the list because you just can't risk certain items running out! (Trust me, I had this happen to me the first time and I was a very sad camper with what was left)

Both extremely solid 9/10. If you like poke, you'll probably like it pan-fried. The spicy ahi flavor is familiar, but the change in cook method adds a different dimension. If you like shrimp, and can handle a smidge of spice, you'll probably like the Cajun version. However, the limiting factor could be location. If you're in the area, or see them at an event, try go fa sho!

I found parking after a while driving and waiting a while. 2 people in front us of in line to go in. We had to wait a little while. Not a very long wait. We went inside and we sat down. Ambiance is casual and comfortable inside here. We ordered right away. Service is friendly and fast. The food came out shortly after. It looked good. We ate and then we left right away. As other people were waiting outside. We paid and we left to go outside. There was a very long line of people waiting to go in. Plus, it was the day before Mother's Day. Or it's always busy like that. We will be back to try the Famous Oxtail Soup. Which we should've tried this first time here. We will be back another time. Support local businesses.

Ambiance, well It's your typical old school coffee shop with their traditional menu items that they've served for years, nothing special about the place except the food. No frills. Hubby ordered one of the daily specials: pot roast. It's pretty good, tender, gravy is tasty, mac salad is decent, and if it's Saturday he always gets it. Very home style. Serving size is good. I got the mini oxtail soup, no green onions. Came with plenty of cilantro, four pieces of ox tail (one large, two medium, one small), pretty good for a mini, and a few peanuts. Oxtail pieces were almost fall off the bone but not quite. Flavor of the meat and broth was delicious. They have a container of ginger shoyu sauce on the table, but I'd you want only ginger you need to ask, which they bring quickly, but don't ask if you want it so if the server is busy you need to wait. They have three sizes - mini, regular, XL. XL comes with 4 scoops rice. The others come with 2. You can order extra broth for $2, and other options such as Saimin Ixtail, but I forgot what they all were. One thing I especially like about Kapiolani's oxtail soup is the ginger is grated, not minced like some other establishments. I enjoy oxtail soup at several places but this is my go to because of taste, grated ginger, different sizes based on my preference for the day, and it's in Aiea and conveniently located for me.

I especially love the sweet potato waffle fries, that are now offered on the HH menu. The candied pork belly and fish and chips are two of my new favorites. They also just added a new item, Sweet and sour spare ribs, much like what you'd get at your favorite Chinese restaurant. I ordered it as a take-out, and it was provided in two separate containers; one with the rice and pickled veggies and the other holding the spare ribs with a ton of sauce. There actually was too much sauce, and I suggested that they reduce the amount so it doesn't overwhelm the overall dish. The flavor is really good, and what you'd expect of you crave that sweet, tangy flavor. Another new favorite for my list.

Everything is so rich and delicious. Why aren't more people thinking to put chowder on top of waffle fries? This particular location is right next to the Bayview golf course and driving range. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, and a lot of people are there with their clubs before or after golfing. It's a very relaxed environment. You can order on a QR code menu or with a server, and the food comes out pretty quick. Plenty of parking available in the parking lot.
