I had the chance to dine at Scratch Kitchen in Kapolei back in 2024 for a special Mother's Day lunch with my youngest daughter. I'd never been to their other locations, so this was my first experience -- and honestly, it left an impression. That spot in Kapolei has seen a few restaurants come and go over the years. Before Scratch Kitchen, there was Sugar Cane, and if I reach far enough back, I'm pretty sure a Mexican restaurant lived there too. It's one of those spaces where you hope the next place finally sticks. But the food at Scratch Kitchen? Absolutely delicious. The kind of meal where the pictures alone make your mouth water. If "smell‑a‑vision" or "lick‑your‑screen" technology existed, everyone would understand exactly what I mean. Every dish was full of flavor, beautifully done, and perfect for a Mother's Day treat. Stopped by Scratch Kitchen in Honolulu for brunch, and honestly, I'm surprised it wasn't packed. We went mid-morning on a weekday and the place was nearly empty--not sure if it was just good timing or an underrated gem. Either way, it made for a super relaxed experience with no wait and plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the food. Loved: The street tacos with the tempura shrimp were easily the star of the meal. 100% worth it. Light, crispy shrimp with a flavorful slaw and just the right amount of heat--basically a flavor party in every bite. The burger was another quiet star. Juicy patties, nicely seasoned, and stacked just right. Nothing super flashy, but really satisfying. Definitely a good pick if you're not in the mood for brunchy stuff. I dropped off my car to be detailed at a shop on Kawaiahao Street and was "killing" time before heading to Ward Theater to see a movie at noon. I walked through Ward Centre and the shops across the street looking for a place to have a small meal. My first two choices weren't open yet and I thought to myself, "Why not go to Scratch?" I hadn't been to Scratch since they moved out of Chinatown (a long time ago). I was seated near the rear of the restaurant and ordered coffee while perusing the menu. I vacillated between what I'd ordered before (shrimp and grits) and something new. I ended up choosing the waffle with a side of bacon. I asked my server to have the waffle extra crispy as I do not like a soggy waffle. My food arrived in short order ... My waffle came with whipped butter, blueberries and strawberries on top and a small container of maple syrup on the side. The bacon arrived in a separate metal tray. Unfortunately, the waffle wasn't as crispy as I'd hoped for ... The color was indicative of a crispy waffle, but it was normal. The reason I ask for an extra crispy waffle is that once you spread the butter and apply syrup, the waffle turns soggy quickly, like cereal once milk is added. It's a personal preference; I think the waffle would be fine for most diners. The bacon was fine ... Crisp but not overdone (which would have been fine with me). A great date night experience! Food was delicious, flavorful and filling. We ordered: Lilikoi bbq ribs - 5/5! The meat was cooked to perfection! It was so tender and fell off the bone. We came a bit before noon on a Friday (while on vacation) and although it was pretty busy, there were still a couple tables available. There was plenty of free parking in the shopping plaza parking structure. Our server was very friendly and helpful, although service in general seemed to be a bit slow. I had the Milk and cereal pancakes which were really good, it seemed like the milk they gave on the side was condensed milk which had a nice flavor. My husband had the Korean pulled pork sandwich (I believe it was one of the specials). He liked it but said the Gochujang flavor wasn't as strong as he expected. We also shared the Deep fried devil eggs which were super tasty, and made us wonder how exactly they deep fried the eggs. I loved the opening seating concept and being able to see them prepare your food. They also had outdoor seating. Went on a Sunday for lunch. Was told the wait would be 45 minutes, but got a text message in 25 minutes that a table was ready I like that they had that system set up. It took a while for someone to come and take our order, but that was OK . What really bothered me was the marked difference in time that they brought the dishes out. I ordered shrimp po boy and my friend ordered the burger. I was surprised that they didn't ask how she wanted the burger cooked. When it did finally come it was well done. if you prefer your burger medium, make a point to ask about that. The Po Boy came out pretty fast. My friend's burger came out when I was almost done eating my meal. It's really awkward to only have one dish at the table. Do you wait for the other dish to come and let your food get cold or do you eat while the other person watches you eat? I suspect her burger was given to the table next to us. They were seated after we had placed our orders, but the lady got a burger before everyone else at her table and before my friend got her burger. I regret not ordering the milk and cereal pancakes and perhaps I ordered the wrong thing, but I was really disappointed in the Po Boy. There was so much bread that the filling was inadequate. Lettuce filled most of the bread. There was a stingy scattering of small pieces of battered and fried shrimp and pickled onions sitting atop the mound of lettuce. Had a quick brunch at around 9:30, When we arrived there were a lot of seats available and we were able to get seated without a reservation. I initially tried to order the CRABK CAKE BENEDICT but was told they couldn't do it, second option was SCRATCH BENEDICT couldn't do that either so maybe they didn't have the hollandaise. We really enjoyed our food here and will definitely return. We were hungry and in the area and stumbled upon this gem. There are so many new places to try in the Ward area and so glad we stopped in. Scratch has a great happy hour menu and it's actually a good place to start if you want to try a whole bunch of things. We ordered the beef street tacos, popcorn chicken, Brussels sprouts, fries and bacon Mac and cheese. Everything came out hot and fresh. My favorite was the Brussels sprouts because of the charred flavor with cheese and capers. The popcorn chicken was yummy and crispy fun. The Mac and cheese so thick and melty. The street tacos were okay..the meat a bit dry for my liking. The happy hour wine is a deal and definitely a must as the pour is generous. Free parking is available in the South Shore Market garage at Ward Villages and the restaurant is located in the street level on Auahi St. We were seated on a table on the left as they also have bar counter looking into the open kitchen. We decided to eat family style and decided on several appetizers and entrees. One of our selections, Abacargot (Pacific Abalone) was not available. Crispy Smashed Potatoes - ordered original. The potatoes were had a nice crispy crust and came with a side of ketchup. Tasty Crispy Brussel Sprouts - had capers, shoyu vinaigrette and topped with Parmesan. Nice crisp and flavors. Mahi Mahi Fish and Chips - beer battered local Mahi Mahi served with a yuzu tartar and green salad. Three pieces of fish which were not large and fries that had a lot of small pieces. This was not a memorable dish. MA-10 Meatloaf - meatloaf was topped with a gochujang sauce, sunny side up egg and garlic rice. This was delicious! Gochujang was a nice complement with a large scoop of garlic rice with steamed broccoli and kim chee. Would order this again. For dessert, we shared the Brulee'd Honey French Toast. It was a sweet bread topped with slices of fresh pineapple and strawberry, whipped cream, shredded coconut, honey, powdered sugar and two large scoops of vanilla ice cream. This was a very tasty and satisfying ending to our meal. Overall, we had a nice meal in a nice casual environment. Service was friendly but a little quirky. I randomly picked this place because of the decent Yelp rating but later on (too late), I saw it mentioned elsewhere as a "mildly expensive awful restaurant" due to the portions and the hidden fees (IIRC it was a 4% kitchen appreciation fee). We ordered the Lilikoi BBQ short ribs as an appetizer which came with 3 pieces - the red pickled onions and red cabbage went really well with the sweet passion fruit. It was very very sweet though! My SO was disappointed by the cider braised pork belly and apple pasta since it only had 5 mildly flavored pieces of pork belly. I'm not sure, but I think all pasta dishes are usually like that - mostly cheap pasta and not much of anything else. There wasn't much of an apple taste either. Just a quick review of a HH experience that we had at Scratch Kitchen. We went to the venue located off the side street of Queen, although the address says 1170 Auahi. Small clean and simple venue with an open air atmosphere and an open kitchen. HH consisted of $3 off beer, $3 off house red and white wine, $5 well shots and an assortment of several HH foos items. I had the Honolulu beer works beer and a $5 Crispy smashed potatoes, and $12 Lilikoi BBQ Pork Ribs. Servers were friendly and attentive and it appears that all of the staff help each other on all of the tables. The beer was as expected, but was not filled up to the top as I was expecting. Probably was a 12 oz pour in a 16 oz glass. The potatoes were very good with a combination of slat, garlic and vinegar. You also have the option to add garlic truffle for $2 but did not partake. The ribs were served with a housemade likikoi BBQ sauce. Ribs were tender and plentiful and had a nice flavor to them. All in all a good experience and will be back to try the rest of the menu. HH is from 3-5 daily and they have an extended brunch menu every day until 5pm. read more

Service, food, staff, ambience spot on. We were here on a monday morning, group of 8, with kids. It was our first time here and all went well. The food is delicious, the service is great. We paid $260ish for 7 meals with appetizers and unlmtd coffee , tip included. We just walked-in, no reservation needed. Parking is at the mall, we did a little walking but place is not that hard to find. Restroom is available inside. It was a modern, delicious twist on the classic. That said, the portion was a bit small for the price. Also, our waitress mentioned it came with mac salad, but we didn't receive any. I even double-checked with my family, and they all heard the same thing. Just a small miscommunication, but worth noting. Overall, the food was great and I'm definitely coming back.
