A home-like black owned business located a bit tucked away off Madison. I came at around 10 on a Friday morning and it was very quiet. There were two other tables and myself, so I got to choose some pretty great seating. The restaurant is family owned. I really loved the open kitchen concept and the owner is both waitress and cook. Food: The chicken and the fish are all cooked to order so give it time...it's well worth the wait! I had fish and grits with fried egg and a biscuit instead of the corn muffin for around a $2 up charge. The fish was so hot, fresh and flavorful that I burned my mouth because I was too greedy to wait until it cooled down. The grits were creamy and actually didn't need doctoring up (hey I'm from Alabama so I had my salt, pepper, and butter ready). The biscuit was so thick which I love. The jam is probably smuckers but that's ok! The food was simply delicious and filling. Ambiance: It's a clean establishment, and on the small side so even though it wasn't busy when I came, I'm sure there could easily be a wait during peak hours. Don't bother placing an order for additional food after you received your food. You'll be in the back of the line with the GrubHub orders. With my parents being from the south it's really hard to top the way they taught me to cook. However, I had the catfish, fried chicken and the pork chop. I also tried the candy yams, greens and mac & cheese. Everything was phenomenal. I loved every bit of it. It wasn't too salty. The catfish was light and flaky. The pork chops were thick. I didn't eat the food here, so I won't leave 1 star. I'm leaving 2 stars instead because of the short-haired lady at the front. I came in on a Friday evening. I was in line and my elderly father went up to the front to ask about the restroom and was literally IGNORED by the lady. He came back a few short minutes later to ask about the restroom code and the lady answered back with the code very rudely and gave a dirty look, as if it's some kind of inconvenience to her day and workflow. Excuse me? This isn't some oddball request. It's simple. I don't understand the reaction. That's a shame too because I heard great things about the food here (I had this on my list to try), but after seeing how rudely my dad was treated by that lady, I lost all interest in supporting this business due to this interaction. I walked out with my family, and despite not having the food, was left with a sour taste in my mouth. Keep it simple. Keep it honest. I wouldn't encourage any one of my friends, family, or anyone on Yelp that's reading about this place to make a decision on where to eat, to support this place, if this is how customers are spoken to. I understand there's two sides to every story but it's really straight and simple with what I saw. 3/4/19 Came here a couple of times for dinner since my last review. Most recently last Tuesday with a group of ten to celebrate Black History Month. The wings were still as delicious as I remember crispy and flavorful. We were served family style. There was catfish, greens, moist brisket, corn muffins and a delicious bread pudding for dessert. Co-owner Barbara was the gracious hostess telling us a little of their story, and what kind of things they have planned. 2/25/17 Yay finally got to check out this place. The chicken and waffles were yummy! Chicken was well seasoned, crunchy and temperature hot. Brisket was a little tough , but I wouldn't have chosen that for my bbq sandwich that was dad's choice. Biscuit was fluffy and the bbq sauce had a nice kick. Picked up peach cobbler to bring home. Would definitely go back to try more of the menu. Great service friendly staff. read more

Biscuit and gravy ($9.95): I've been craving a biscuit lately and this hit the spot. Crunchy exterior, soft interior, and buttery. Perfect. The gravy is thin with finely chopped mushroom and ground meat. The gravy came in a cup; with great pleasure I drank the last bit of it after I ran out of biscuit. Sweet potato pie ($2.95): The small slice of sweet potato pie was topped with pecans. The sweet potato was very natural in flavor and the topping was lightly sweet. The outer edge crust is like a crunchy cookie. Apple pie ($6.99): Round pie, much larger than the slice. The apple pie has the perfect filling. It's not overly sweet and the apples have the perfect amount of cinnamon. There is a generous amount of crumble on top with a little bit of granola. The pie crust is pretty plain. Banana pudding ($5.95?): The banana pudding has a very strong banana flavor. The banana pudding has chunks of bananas and whole Nilla wafers. Big biscuit sandwich ($10.95): My partner ordered chicken, but didn't know there are two options: chicken sausage patty and chicken Andouille sausage, and was given the latter. Also my partner said they asked for gravy and didn't get it, but was happy nonetheless. We were walk-ins on a Sunday afternoon with 3 ladies ahead of us and we didn't need to wait long. Almost everything was packaged in plastic except for the gravy cup which was paper. I said we didn't need utensils because I had my own, but they forgot and gave a package to me. One of the employees was very proactive in identifying the pies in the pie case for me since there weren't signs. There is a small table for 2 outside - not the best ambiance since it's next to a parking lot, but it was nice to have since we can't eat inside due to current COVID restrictions. Stopped by Simply Soulful after a trip to the Seattle Japanese Garden, and really glad I was able to try it!! As soon as you walk in, you can tell you're about to get a really delicious home-cooked type meal! Everyone is friendly and the place really gives off home/family-type vibes. It was really nice! We ordered a combo meal with chicken and catfish, cornbread, collard greens, and mac n cheese. I really have no complaints about any of it, it was all really tasty. My favs were the mac n cheese and cornbread!! The mac was baked and crispy on the top, and the right amount of cheesy. I finished it before my boyfriend could haha. The cornbread was so soft and moist -- wish we got an extra one! The chicken and catfish were good too, wouldn't say those were overly amazing but definitely better than average! It took a while to get our food, but you know it's because they make everything absolutely fresh, so I didn't have issues with waiting! The owner cooks around a large island, there are bags of flour out in stacks, it brings me back to when my family owned a restaurant. The cozy vibes are real Since they Serve brunch all day, I ordered the chicken and waffles. They really 'make from scratch' cuz it took a little bit of time (25 min?). But the chicken was super hot, crisp, juicy, and wonderful! The cornbread waffle didn't taste too much of corn. But was still moist and crunchy at the same time. With the exception of the cashiers (who were delightful), my experience at Simply Soulful was awful. My order took 15 minutes longer than the later "pickup ETA." Doesn't seem like it would take that long for 3 sides, which are already done; and fish, which a lot was being cooked--I could hear the orders being read. One of the cooks (short guy), had the most negative energy. The worst thing while handling people's food. When he finally got to my order, as he was scrapping the bottom of the pans and slopping the food into the containers he said to the other cook (with his voice raised loud enough for me to hear it), "Let me do this so I can get this lady out of my face." In addition to his rudeness, the food wasn't all that great. The yams were mashed and watery. Looked nothing like what's on their site. The side fish order is one piece of fish--cat fish at that--not much for $13 and fish meat was really soft (also nothing like the image on the site). The black eyed peas and collards were better, but it didn't take much. I did try to call the number given on the site for feedback but the mailbox is full. So I'm putting this here. Delicious. Just wonderful. My boyfriend who is from Tennessee says this is some of the best southern BBQ he's had here, and I must agree. It's a tiny hole in the wall just down the street from a very busy cafe, so the quiet was refreshing on a Saturday afternoon. Limited indoor seating and a couple outdoor tables are all they have. The folks working all seemed very no-nonsense, get your stuff and eat kinda people. There's no fluff about it, and that is so different from the PNW attitude, which was cool. It felt authentically southern. We are obsessed with the Brisket Biscuit sandwich, and it is a hot mess and deliciousness. You have to eat it with a fork and knife, it's next to impossible to pick up. It's worth the mess. The sides are all really great too. We tried the mac and cheese, collard greens, cornbread, and beans. Not a complaint on any of them. In fact, there's no complaints to be had at all. These are hard-working folks who make good food.
