Lately, she's been on a Thai kick (not sure how that started) and this place was smack-dab next door to where we were getting (at her request) pedicures. We did not have a reservation, but we saw that we didn't need one-and were seated right away. We sat in a booth in the corner and I was immediately regretting not bringing my own chair. The bench's cushion was completely deteriorated and I was bouncing on just a spring. It took a while to get situated to not notice it as much. I'm not familiar enough with Thai food to know what to order, but each item had a pretty good description of the ingredients. Pictures would have been really nice for the uneducated diner such as myself, but I attempted to find something based on the written description. I had a great first experience at Simply Thai. I went for dinner and I was seated right away. The atmosphere was pretty old school but comfortable. The menu has a lot of classic Thai dishes and after long consideration I went with the Chicken Pad Thai. The noodles had great flavor and the raw bean sprouts and carrots gave it a good crunch. Was in UT for work and the weather was 30 degrees so I looked on Yelp for a Thai place near my hotel. When I walked in, the owner saw me and kept on rudely bossing around her waitstaff. I finally walked up to her and said hi I need a table. She sat me but didn't give me a menu. So I sat there for 3 minutes and then I waved down a waitress and got a menu. I ordered Tom Yum soup and a noodle dish called Guay Teaw Pad Kee Mao (try to say that 10 times). The soup was not sour and it had red/green bell peppers and white onions thus making the soup sweet. The noodle dish was soaked in a dark brown salty sauce. I picked out the tofu and tomatoes because everything else in the noodle dish tasted like pure salt. The for dessert I got the mango with sticky rice. Usually when I get this desert, it would be drizzled with sweet coconut milk. This place drizzled the dish with coconut syrup. Coconut syrup is for my latte not for a Thai dessert. Two stars are only for the waitstaff, I commend them for putting up with the owner. read more

My husband has been a huge fan of this restaurant for many years, and it was the first place I ever tried Thai food. While this place did make me realize I am a huge lover of Thai food and that I can handle the spice!, I am sad to report that the last time we were in the area and stopped by, the food was only OK; the spice wasn't all there like usual and the chicken was very dry, and the service was also only OK. Food wasn't too bad. We ordered 2 different combinations from the lunch special menu. The pad gra pow tofu was slightly crispy on the outside while soft on the inside. It was decently seasoned. The pad gra pow was a little salty. The added bell peppers gave it a nice flavor. The gang ka-ree (yellow) curry was decent. We were a little surprised the curry came out more of a dull color rather than a bright yellow compared to most Thai places we've been to. The Tom yum gai was a little off. Didn't taste completely authentic. We felt like there were too many tomatoes and the tomato flavor definitely overpowered the soup. We also ordered papaya salad which was okay. A major gripe was that this thai restaurant, like a few others, does not make the food spicy enough. We ordered our dishes to be extra spicy and it was basically mild without a trace of peppers anywhere. Last but not least, the service was horrible. We had to wait awhile before we got waters, the waitress never came back with extra plates that we asked for, our 2 main entrees came 15 minutes apart, and we were sitting with empty glasses almost the entire time. This place was extremely disappointing. I was expecting it to be really good given it's 4 star average. We got take out and were told it would be ready in 15-20 minutes. It ended up taking 30, and they were not even busy when I got there. When they brought my good to bag it up, it had dripped all over and got on my other containers. It was a mess. Was it at least good? The Num Tok and Tom Kha were pretty good. The Num Tok was flavorful, but I do wish it came with more rice. The Pad La Naa unfortunately was very bad. The noodles came separately, and the sauce was in the container that had spilled all over previously. They didn't do a good job wiping it up, so as soon as I opened the lid it went all over. I started mixing it together but soon realized there weren't very many noodles (there was about 4 times as much sauce). The veggies were overcooked, and there were only about five small pieces of chicken. The noodles were also overcooked. It was really bad. The decor is very simple, matching the name, as is the food, but do not let that simplicity fool you into thinking the food will be anything less than wonderful. I ordered the Yum Tom soup and the Gang Massaman (a favorite dish of mine) and was blown away by the stellar taste. The soup was spicy and sour, but the mushrooms and fried tofu smoothed out the flavor so that I was left with only the disappointment that I ate it all too fast! Never had a dish here I didn't like! My only gripe is that the vegetables in the curry are huge! You basically get the whole potato and the whole carrot.
