Dr. Korten retired and sold out to a corporate business. The office staff still are super nice. The vet now only works Mon-Wed. and lacks Dr. Korten's experience and caring. It'd be nice if you could choose the day your pet gets sick, but three days a week is no way to run a veterinary business. The blood tests need to be sent out; but they will run tests in house, for more $. It's a shame to see such a great veterinary center go downhill. I have moved on to another vet. We switched from Salmon Brook to Simsbury Vet on advice of a friend with an eccentric dog. Our happy-go-lucky lab had developed severe separation anxiety and was destroying house and home. Salmon Brook put him on antidepressants which didn't help and instead caused seizures. They then said we needed to take him for a psych eval to Tufts. Dr. Potter diagnosed our boy in a very short time. She noticed how he shivered slightly when she touched his spine or ribs, the bowing of his spine, and said that he was in severe pain. He'd hide the pain when he was with us, but when we weren't with him, it was agonizing and he'd destroy out of the pain. She prescribed mild pain relief and glucosamine. In a matter of days, he was back to his old self. After that, we permanently switched to SVP. I like having the same docs, especially Dr. Korton. They have a great bedside manner and are very pet-savvy. Salmon Brook has had a lot of turnover since one of their founders died a few years ago. It's not the same level of care that we used to see, and their prices are crazy. Four years ago, our beloved pup stopped eating. Dr. Korton saw him right away, and ran some tests. Within a few days we found out that he had a massive tumor blocking his intestine. We had no choice but to put him to sleep as it was inoperable, and he was 13 years old and weak. Dr. Korton was kind and understanding. The entire staff said goodbye to our pup as they'd gotten to know him over the years. The process was gentle and pain free, and Dr. K. gave us all of the time and space we needed to say goodbye. We even were able to leave through a side door as to avoid reception after he was gone. When we adopted a new lab rescue, SVP gave him a full workup and found out that he had scabies when we'd been told it was just a mild skin abrasion. When he suddenly put on weight and started to lose fur, we were concerned it was scabies again, but it was underactive thyroid which again Dr. K diagnosed right away. The staff is wonderful, but the vets make this practice. It is an old-time practice where the docs KNOW the pets and take the time to see them, not just run tests. We've boarded here many times and our dogs have been healthy and cared for. I've had labs for 30 years and am thrilled to have a vet I can trust who explains things clearly to me. Dr. K has even taken my sons for tours "backstage" and let them look in microscopes. I can't say enough about this wonderful team of very clever vets. We've been with them now almost 10 years, and have recommended them many times to friends who have been equally thrilled with the care and diagnostic abilities of the SVP team. read more

I have not been back to Dr Korten for about 6 years. I think he is a good vet -- maybe very, very good -- but in my experience he is a "dog vet." After getting that impression of him from my visits, I talked with and observed people who brought in their dogs. They sang his praises to the skies, and he seemed to have a close relationship with many of them and their dogs. With my cats (and some others) he seemed disinterested and somewhat impatient, not at all what I had experienced with other vets. My first visit to him was with a sick hamster. He was kindness itself, and took some time educating me about hamster health. So I took my cats to him a few times until I reached my conclusion about him. If I add a dog to my household (or another hamster), I may return to this practice, but I'm not going to take my cats there. read more

Dr. Korten misdiagnosed my cat yesterday and he is now at Salmon Brook Vet Hospital clinging to life. Not only did he NOT try very hard to determine what might be wrong with our kitty, his bedside manner was terrible and he did not help me with after care/warning signs/ next steps at all. I was told my 5 year old cat "could have allergies, and infection, or cancer". Turns out his body was full of fluid caused by a heart issue (cause still tbd- awaiting test results). The antibiotic shot he gave him made everything worse overnight. Incredibly disappointed and sad. read more

This is a review based on my first experience with the receptionist today 10-13-2018 at 8:45 am. I called to inquire what treatments and exams my newly adopted kitten had done at Simsbury Vetrinary Hospital. I had a series of very simple questions such as "which shots has she had, had she had a stool sample taken, any blood work to test for feline leukemia / aids ETC" the woman on the phone was the most rude and unhelpful receptionist I have ever encountered. Not only was she unable to answer any of my questions, she was condescending and also WRONG. She gave me false information on which shots my kitten had. Thank goodness Kitten's foster mom was able to answer my questions (with receipts) for me before I had her given a second round of first round shots. I am absolutely appalled with the treatment of myself but more importantly the utter lack of consideration for my kittens health, which has been in the hands of Dr. Korten up until this phone call. Had someone else taken the call I very well could have been an returning customer, as I have heard good things from my kittens foster family. But- because of this experience, I have no trust in this facility or their records. I hope to save someone the hassle of calling in and having to encounter such a disgustle employee. read more

As I walked in the exam room I could see Dr. Felicia Laufier's demeanor change. She was no longer friendly or personable. The lady that came in to hold my difficult dachshund was more pleasant than the Dr was. She gave me a quote of items that should be done totaling $242.50. I left the dog cuz he would need to be sedated to be examined. I got home and spoke to my husband and we decided to NOT have him get the 4 shots listed on the signed quote (the other 2 items were for the office visit and the sedation totaling $116.50). I called and informed the front desk NOT to give my dog the quoted shots. Upon picking up our dog my husband informed me that the bill is around $230 dollars. I called to inquire as to the bill being approximately $10.00 cheaper than the received quote but also while requesting that $126.00 worth of items NOT to be done according to the quote but seemed to be on the bill. The receptionist immediately transferred me to Dr. Laufier. Dr. Laufier immediately had an attitude. She was mean, nasty and angry. It was like how dare I question her about the bill. She informed me that she gave him the Heartworm test (the heartworm test was $50 and was one of the test I requested NOT to be done). She gave me the impression that he needed it before being sedated and I questioned that. I told her I've gotten the dog that test before and he did not need surgery after taking the heartworm test so I abruptly apologized for not knowing that he actually needed to have that test before being sedated nor was I informed when I signed the quote that he needed the heartworm test before being sedated. She repeatedly reminded me that I signed a quote for $242.50 and that I should be grateful that the bill was less than the quoted amount I responded by saying "by $10.00 dollars?" she said "yes". In her defense she said that she did trim his nails and express his anal gland at no charge. If she would have just explained the situation in a nicer way the extra charge would have been an easier pill to swallow. By the way I was not told of the results of the Heartworm test. I cannot say that I've never been treated this way before because I have and it is not easy when it does happen. I was hoping that it would not happen at Simsbury Veterinary Hospital. read more

We have been taking our animals here for 25 years. Our Beagle was 11 and we brought him in for a gi-bleed (presenting with dark tarry stool). We brought a stool sample with us and they sent the sample out for further evaluation. Of of the causes of a gi-bleed is a bacterial infection so they put him on antibiotics and sent him home. We had been giving him the antibiotics and a day later notice he had severe back pain. We brought him back into the vet and they prescribed him a steroid and tramadol. They attribute the pain to the bacterial infection in his gastrointestinal tract. They sent him him home. Two days went by and he progressively lost his appetite to where he wasn't eating at all and was steadily getting weaker. We called the vet explaining the situation and they instructed us to stop giving him the tramadol. His appetite got slightly better but then started to decline to where he wasn't eating again. A week and a half had passed with no call from the vet on the stool sample so i called them to ask if they had received it yet. They said they had not and would call me back. Several hours later I got a call stating that my dogs stool sample came back negative for the bacterial infection. I inquired about the gi bleed to which the woman on the phone asked what made me think it was a gi bleed. Being as how the vet had seen the stool sample I second guessed myself thinking maybe he did not in fact have a gi bleed even though he displayed the classic sign in his stool. I asked when I could bring him back in and the woman on the phone said anytime in the next couple of days. The lack of concern at the vets office made me think this wasn't a serious thing going on with my dog after all. I would take him in two days later on my day off. The next night he looked so sad and he was so weak, I went to get into bed but something told me something was just not right so I checked his gums and inner lining of his mouth, it was pallor and cool to the touch. We rushed him into the emergency clinic and they took him right in. They said he was severely anemic and had to do a blood transfusion right away and admit him. They next morning we got a call saying that he threw a clot, went into cardiac arrest, they brought him back but he passed away shortly later. The vet at the emergency clinic told us that we should think about switching our vet because the best care was not provided at Simsbury veterinary hospital. I do not feel that the Simsbury vet hospital did everything they could for my dog. They were so complacent about everything and made me doubt myself. The vet saw his stool sample, I don't know why they felt the need to question me later on about it. The lack of concern on making sure they got the results of the stool sample in a timely manner for a gi bleed astounds me. A gi bleed is not something to be taken lightly. I figured that the reason they weren't calling us back was because the cause was the bacterial infection and he was already taking the antibiotics as a precautionary measure, if I knew otherwise I would have called sooner and made them follow up. My dog is no longer with us and I mostly blame the Simsbury veterinarian hospital for their lack of care. I blame myself as well, i should have followed up sooner with the results and not trusted the vet so much with my dogs care. read more

In June 2018 Dr. Felicia Laufer came to my home in E. Spfld. Ma. and correctly diagnosed my dog Cinnamon as needing surgery on her spine immediately. Dr. Laufer transported Cinnamon and myself to Piper memorial in Middletown Ct. on her Saturday. Dr. Laufer consulted with the staff surgeon and got Cinnamon the care she needed. As of 8/2/2018 Cinnamon is well on the road to complete recovery thanks to Dr. Laufer's excellent judgement and diagnosis. She is truly a compassionate and caring vet. Dr. Laufer is a credit to her profession and Simsbury Vetrinary Hospital. read more

Such wonderful vets and staff. They do not do it for the money and do not charge for every little service (unlike Salmon Brook). They do it for the love animals. I had a puppy on IV and on 24/7 care for 5 days. It cost less than 1 grand. At Salmon Brook, it would have cost 5 grand easily and got less TLC. Why pay more for less? read more

I brought my pets to the vet for years. But last year they kept misdiagnosis my cat. They would just give her a shot and sent her home. They didnt want to do any more than that. This went on for almost a year. I kept telling to do more than one day she came in really sick and was told she had pancreatitis and told me i would end up spending alot money and still would not be able to save her. They treated me like i was a poor person and they did not want to cure her. I took her to another vet and found out that she did not have pancreatitis she had a tumor in her lung and now its too late to save her. I will never come back to them again and would never send anyone to them. read more

I used to work there and had my cats cared for, as well. Dr Korton and Dr Potter are fantastic. If I was to say anything semi negative, which is really a positive in most cases is this: they are concerned with the animals getting the care they need. They are very aware of how the cost of tests sometimes hinder their pets care. If you want to make certain the diagnosis is correct, agree or ask for the tests to determine what is going on. One of my cats was also misdiagnosed, but I did not fault Dr Korton. My cat was losing weight so I brought my cat in and he felt around the thyroid and the thyroid appeared to be much larger than it should have been. We put my cat on thyroid medication. However, it turned out to be a tumor in her throat which doubled in size every day and soon my cat did die. But when 99% of the time it is the thyroid, how can I expect him to have x-ray vision to see that it was a tumor without getting further tests. In hindsight, she should have had an ultrasound, but who gets an ultrasound when 99% of the time a large node in the throat is a thyroid issue? Also, the end result would have been the same. I would not of had a tumor in her throat operated on and removed . As for the tick, did you have your pet on Frontline?? If not, the tick could have been brought into the boarding area with a small tick on it. And, if your pet was on Frontline, the tick would have died within 12-24 hours, if I remember correctly how Frontline works. So, i'm thinking you did not have your pet on Frontline. I would recommend them to family and friends. read more

I have had an excellent experience so far with this Vet - about 2 years now. I won't say it is the fanciest vet in appearance, but can say that the vets are kind and knowledgeable. They give you options for care based on what you can financially and realistically do. I don't feel like I am walking in without knowing how much I'll have to spend. The staff is kind and the doctor calls to check in on your pets after surgery. I am VERY pleased. read more

Dr. Corten and Dr. Potter have been great to our dogs and cats and have been very considerate, accommodating and understanding when it comes to their care and understanding and helpful when costs run high.
