From the moment we walked in, the staff was welcoming and hyped us up for the challenge. The room itself was cleverly designed, with puzzles that made us think, work together, and argue (lovingly) about whose fault it was when we got stuck. The clues were challenging but fair, and the props and environment made us feel like we were in an actual prison trying to break out. We loved the variety of puzzles, and the staff gave just enough hints to keep us moving without spoiling the fun. We didn't escape in time, but we had so many laughs along the way that it didn't even matter. Everyone from the adults to the kids had a role in solving something, and it was awesome to see everyone working together. If you're looking for a fun, interactive, and memorable way to spend time with family or friends, book the Prison Break room at Escape Modesto. We took on The Factory room, which threw us into an industrial puzzle-filled adventure that had just the right mix of brain-twisting riddles, tactile challenges, and "Aha!" moments. With a few minutes to spare (and a lot of dramatic yelling, teamwork, and maybe one too many bumps in the dark), we managed to escape! The props and setup were immersive without being overcomplicated, it really felt like we were in an abandoned, mystery-filled plant. The puzzles were clever and layered. Nothing felt too easy, but we never felt completely stuck. A perfect balance! The decor in the hallway is a time-warp in itself, clocks galore, moody lighting, and vibes straight out of a time travel noir movie. The staff was top-notch. Super friendly, helpful with hints (when we begged), and fully in on the fun. Bonus points for the hilarious costumes in the photo room, nothing brings a group together like looking absolutely ridiculous in chainmail and a Viking crown. Pro tip: Dress comfortably, bring a few puzzle-minded friends, and prepare to laugh, think, and possibly argue over what the Roman numeral VII really means under pressure. At first, it was going to be just the two of us, but thank goodness my friends were able to make it! This was our very first escape room. A little hard to find, but it's right behind Sonic's. I started my time of the month so my mood wasn't super great, but once the game started. It was pretty fun and we all didn't get into a fight. My husband wanted to do the murder mystery one. It's where you try to escape a serial killer before she gets to you. Room: We were walked to a room where a backstory was told about the serial killer. The room seemed bare, but if you showed a flashlight, there's lots of riddles and puzzles all over. I'm not going to give it away too much, but having four people and three clues helped so we were able to escape with 15 minutes left. Although, i think the game master gave us a free fourth clue because he wanted to go home. Lol. Would I do it again? Yes, not as often because it is about $33 a person and had a percentage off. Maybe, if they had a deal.

Reservations were easy to make online and when I had issues and questions, the owner was very kind on the phone. During our session, there was another group that walked in so spontaneous fun was possible too. However, our game master was preoccupied so communication was slow during the game. I personally did the "Lost Treasure of Atlantis" which was labeled as hard difficulty. While the room was doable, I was disappointed in a puzzle that was uncalibrated. This issue resulted in the entire group being stuck for several minutes despite solving the puzzle. The room was formatted in a linear manner so our group of 6 felt very cramped. However I was impressed with the technology incorporated in the latter half of our escape. The room was very dim and there weren't enough lamps for each member of our team. It also didn't help that one lamp died 10 minutes in. The screen and speakers were clear. However our game master took several minutes to get back to us. Hence if you need a hint, wave for help immediately because assistance won't be immediately. The celebratory signs were a bit weathered and smelly. Hopefully these signs can be updated to reflect the themes of the rooms and be laminated to prevent the styrofoam deterioration. The experience was worth the $30 price tag but some changes needed to be made for it to be great.
