Just finished a wonderful meal. The problem is that it's like driving through Afghanistan in the parking lot to get to the front door. The service is nice the people are great the food is wonderful the beer is cold but they really need to put some money back into the business. Wow, not sure if we hit this place on a bad night or what, but we were very disappointed with both the food and the service. The salsa was very watery and the chips were thicker than I like (and neither was refilled). I tried the balelas and I didn't particularly care for them. We didn't get a lot of refills on our drinks, but the cardinal sin of the wait staff was to put the flaming hot plate of fajitas directly in front of our grabby one-year-old. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the making of this Yelp review, but unfortunately, we won't be going back. I think we'll be sticking to the chain Tex-Mex places until we find a local purveyor we can rely on. read more

I rarely give out five-star reviews, and this really isn't a five-star restaurant if you think that five stars means a nice place to take your date for prom. But to me, five stars means that the food was something better than I've had anywhere, remarkable, something that I haven't stopped thinking about since I left, and I'm planning a return visit in two days. We're not from around here, but we're in town for a few days, and this place appeared to be a Yelp highlight, so we tried it. Phenomenal. The service was super friendly, but the Peruvian steak served over fries was sensational. The mole sauce served with my wife's enchiladas was bold and delightful. There's nothing frozen here. It seems I've been trying Mexican / Latin food all over the DC/Baltimore area lately. Don't let the weird location stop you from visiting! You'll find this in a little shopping center next to a liquor store near the much more prestigious new town center. We came here based on Yelp reviews, and we were not disappointed. Chips and salsa were very good, but the real standout was the Ropa Vieja. Definitely try this dish! The meat was so tender, and just perfectly delicious. Sides were beans and rice, and plantains. All of it was to die for. I also enjoyed a margarita, and it was very delicious! Not from a mix. For dessert, I tried the fried banana. Wow, it was really, really, good. I've been on Yelp long enough to know that you can find some amazing tacos in places with less than no atmosphere. Still, Sin Fronteras features the biggest disconnect between the menu and the ambience that I've ever encountered. The food isn't just great, it's pretty sophisticated and incredibly varied for a strip-mall location with an interior that still looks only partly finished. The menu at Sin Fronteras is longer and more seafood-oriented than most Latin American places. I've only been once and so can't comment on most of the items, but that one visit convinced me that I'd enjoy just about anything I ordered because their sauces are just exceptional. I had the enchiladas with the best mole sauce I've ever tasted, hands down, and sampled the shrimp in garlic sauce that my companion ordered. Both were the kind of sauces that motivate you to use every last grain of rice to sop it up. The owner stopped by as we were finishing our meal (scanning the other reviews, I see that this isn't an uncommon experience) and emphasized the care they put into making the sauces ("Another half-hour and this would've been overdone"). He's from South Florida and the menu apparently reflects the mix of Latin cuisine found there, which makes sense given the variety of dishes. It wouldn't kill them to spruce up the interior a bit, but I'm not going to subtract a star for that. I'll be back any time I'm anywhere in the vicinity. read more

My fiance and I heard about Sin Fronteras through some friends. We previously lived in College Park, MD where it was easy to find Mexican restaurants that served fresh, authentic Mexican food (or more like El Salvadorian). Sin Fronteras was as good, if not better, than any of these restaurants. I ordered a shrimp and tomato dish, and my fiance ordered the chile relleno. The portions were generous. Nothing was over-cheesed or over-sauced, which happens all too often at Mexican restaurant chains. Everything tasted excellent. We also started with guacamole, which was clearly whipped up shortly after we ordered it. In addition to having great food, Sin Fronteras also has great service. The owner came around to each table to make sure everyone was enjoying their meals. Our server was attentive and pleasant. It's easy to pass by Sin Fronteras, as it's located in a small strip mall on Forest Drive. As another commenter mentioned, don't let the location discourage you! There's plenty of parking. We went for lunch in the middle of the week, choosing this place because we wanted something quick, cheap, and good. Sin Fronteras did not disappoint! Not the best place to get Spanish, Cuban, Mexican, or El Salvadorian food, but it'll do. Annapolis isn't necessarily a culinary destination, so I will be fair and give them a thumbs up for being the most reliable restaurant of this type of cuisine in the area. I'm still kind of confused and ask myself quite often if its a Mexican place. So I look at the menu and find ropa vieja (Cuban), lomo saltado (Peruvian), and chimichangas (Mexican), thus realizing that this is one of those "Latin/Spanish fusion" places. Ok, I'm not mad that they did this...it's fine. But I'm not going to give them the extra star for stellar Spanish/Latin fusion cuisine. The service is good/great depending on the time you choose to patronize this establishment. I've never had horrible food, but nothing that knocked my socks off either. If you're looking for decently flavorful Latin fusion cuisine, this is it for the Greater Annapolis area. They use sal, achiote, culantro, and limon in their seasoning repertoire, so I guess I will just have to concede and eat here again. read more

Fantastic little hidden away place. There is almost zero ambiance, its next to a nasty looking liquor store. BUT IT DOES NOT MATTER! The food is great and the service is friendly and very competent. We were seated in less time than they initially said. I had the Rope Vieja and it was delicious. I would have liked a tad more spice, but it was fine for normal people, lol. I spent my entire life in Arizona and Southern California, so ever since I moved to the Annapolis area I have been hoping to stumble upon a Mexican food joint that has me craving their food. I think I found it tonight! I had the carnitas enchiladas with homemade mexicana mole - it was very very good. A good mole sauce is the key to my heart. The service was friendly and prompt. I was greeted with water and chips and salsa right away and I ordered a tecate. A guy who I assume is the owner came to chat with me and made sure I had everything I needed. My wife and I stopped in here for dinner based solely on the yelp reviews. At first glance, we weren't sure of what we were getting ourselves into as the restaurant is not overly flashy or impressive. But once our appetizer arrived, we knew that the previous reviews were spot-on. The guacamole was freshly prepared after we ordered it. Our server asked us for our preferred level of heat and the guac recipe was adjusted accordingly. The owner stopped by as we were finishing it and explained that the avocados are brought in fresh from Guatemala and that's one of the main reasons the guac is so flavorful. It was the best we ever had! My wife ordered the Margarita Salmon while I chose the Peruvian Lomo Saltada. Both were delicious, flavorful and unique. The owner stopped by after the meal and again took great pride in explaining how the combination of the fresh ingredients yields the flavors that we were raving about. The meal came to around $46 - a very reasonable amount for the portion sizes and the quality of the food. The Annapolis location is almost 2 hours from home so we're going to try the Glen Burnie location soon to taste some of the different entree items. Came here last night for dinner with my mom and both of us were really impressed with the service and how quickly things came out. We didn't order anything special, just some guac (huge serving!), a Cuban sandwich and the salmon salad, but everything came out super quick and very hot. I'd definitely come back and try some of the other dishes & a margarita/sangria in the future. I'm sure in better weather, the outdoor patio would be nice to sit out on also, but due to the rain, we say close to the bar instead. This place is one of the greatest finds in Annapolis. It's totally a diamond in the rought but don't be mistaken by the exterior or the slightly unappealing location. The food here is authentic, the service is incredible and personable and I've never been there while it's super crowded (I usually go later in the evening). The Sangria is perfectly fruity - naturally sweet versus sugary sweet. The margaritas are strong and wonderful as a margarita should be. If you're looking for an appetizer? I recommend the plantains or the nachos. Any of the entrees with meat have been delightful, and intensely flavorful. I myself, have enjoyed the enchilladas both with mole and tomatillo sauce, you really can't go wrong. Try the sopapillas for dessert, they're sugary and fluffy and the perfect cap to any dinner. Huge portions! If you are looking for a large quality meal, this is the place for you. This is probably one of the best places in the area for Mexican food. No horchata though...but I'll let it slide because they have awesome guacamole. Great left overs! Which is good because there was no way I was going to finish it all in one sitting. I had a sea food soup that was amazing! The flavors were great and the sea food was fresh. Although I'm not a fan of tilapia, the tilapia in this soup was actually not too bad. The owner came by and personally asked us what we thought. That was awesome. I felt bad because I didn't finish my food, but honestly, there was too much of it! It can get crowded on Friday and when it does the parking lot gets crowded and chaotic...there are no markings. Really nice waiter helped us. Water In a bottle was put on the table. We had the Lomo Saltado and beef fajitas. The chips were good but I like thin chips and the salsa was good and spicy. We had a lot of meat in both dishes. My fajitas had a grilled jalapeño which I love. Came with rice dish that had black beans and cheese and sour cream. The Saltado had this green citrus sauce on the side -since it had avocado I could not taste (glad the server said it had avocado ( which Im allergic to) in the sauce. Again Yelp comes thru. Every now and then you find a place that just surprises you. Don't go by the outside looks of this place. It is right next to a low-end liquor store in a gravelly (kind of) parking lot. It has a nice patio outside but it is right on the road so I wouldn't find that great as it is near a pretty major intersection. The room is simply appointed, clean and efficient. There is plenty of room, you do not feel crowded at all. Now for the food. I ordered the Pollo Barbacoa as it was "highly recommended" on the menu and by the waitress who was great. While waiting for my lunch i enjoyed their chips and salsa. Not like any other chips and salsa you have had before. The chips were thick and tasty with a finish of fried plantains. Different but really good. the salsa was not the standard runny sweet tomato-ee stuff. Again very different, thick and great tasting. Not sure of the spices they used. The Pollo Barbacoa was excellent. No fat, great sauce served in waxed paper with Banana leaves. Rice and beans on the side were the real deal. All the staff was fantastic. This is a keeper for sure. In town for gymnastics competition. Service: Was quick. No wait to sit. Food came out quickly. Perhaps too quickly as was still working on the appetizer when main course was delivered. Owner came by to talk while we were waiting for our app. Very freindly. Seemed like there were some regulars at the other tables. One thing I didn't like was that they bring carafes of water to the table. I find that very pretentious and just trying too hard for this kind of place. Food: Ordered yuca and chicherones for app, cheese quesadilla for son, and I had cuban sandwich. Enjoyed everything. The quesadilla had, if anything, too much cheese, but it was good. Kind of hard to mess up cheese between two flour tortillas. The app was good as well. The chicherones were deep fried chunks of seasoned pork with some fat on them -- in a good way. Had good flavor, could pick up on cumin and other spices. Weren't fried to oblivion, so were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Had a sauce on them that kind of reminded me of Yum Yum sauce one gets at a Japanese Steak House, but a mexican version. Hadn't ever had this kind of sauce before. Enjoyed it. It might have been a little too thick of a sauce to drizzle over the yuca and pork, but taste was spot on. The cuban sandwich I thought was great. The pulled/shredded pork was well-seasoned and moist. At first glance I couldn't figure out why there was tomato on my sandwich, but then I realized it was a thick slice of ham. I'd only ever had deli-style slices of ham on cubans before. Tasted the ham by itself, and I thought it had good flavor. Don't know if they did something extra to the ham or if I was getting flavor from the pork drippings that were on the sandwich. Bread was crisped nicely and had great texture. I would definitely order this sandwich again. I wasn't nuts about the salsa. Seemed kind of watery to me. I'm not a big salsa eater, so what do I know. Still tasted OK. Chips were crisp and warm; not greasy at all. When back in town for another meet will be sure to stop by again. read more

Amazing food! Amazing service! The owner came up to our table to greet us and explain the idea behind his unique, Latin American/Miami inspired cuisine. We indulged in an oversized portion of the freshest guac and shared the Chile En Nogada- a dish unique as this hole in the wall gem. The sauce on this dish was creamy, frothy and intensely flavorful. An odd combo of cinnamon, coconut, sweet and savory that you'd think would never work. A party in my mouth! Outdoor seating with salsa music playing in the background constantly makes you want to dance. Very impressed with our first time here. Would come again 10/10 read more

I feel like I have to give this place five stars because it's as good as you're going to get in Annapolis, for Mexican or any other type of food really. The chili rellenos was outstanding and the tomatillo sauce is the best I've had in my (somewhat limited) experience with authentic Mexican cooking. The fajitas looked amazing, but don't eat the jalapeno that comes on top--it was face melting hot. Encheladas with chorizo were very tasty as well and the homemade guacamole, chips and salsa are probably the best in the area. Do yourself a favor and skip Chevy's, Mexican Cafe, El Toro Bravo and every other strip mall, Americanized Mexican joint and give this place a shot. A+! Loved the whole experience. This place is a bit off the beaten path, but it's worth it. Exceptional service and exceptional dishes. We had fresh guacamole, fresh salsa, a veggie taco salad and a carnitas dish. As a vegetarian, the vegetable selection served with the taco salad was cooked just right and was so delicious.. freshly grilled asparagus! On a salad! The owner was there that evening and introduced himself and he was just a genuine pleasure and interested in his customers. Just truly an outstanding experience. Honestly I just don't see it. Here is the rundown. Ambiance: it shares a space with a run down liquor store with bars on the windows. Inside is ok. Service: redonkulusly bad (yes that was redonkulusly not a misspelling). For being so slow you think you could get the order right. You never know who your server is and it doesn't matter anyways because they all are equally bothered by you being there. Food: entrees are actually pretty good I had the burrito and my wife had the Cuban sandwich ($11.99). Both were great if perhaps a little over priced. The meat is some of the best cooked selections I have had in any restaurant let alone a Mexican one. One caveat, the chips are just sad. I don't know much about Mexican food. What I do know is that I've been there twice and both times I felt the meal was great. First time I was there I had chicken wrapped in wax paper. Amazingly tender chicken where the chicken just fell off the bone. Second time I was there I had a shredded beef dish. The taste had a tomato base but the spices gave it a nice hint of heat. Side of plaintains and the plantains were done very well. Not mushy or burned to a crisp. I'd recommend a side of grilled veggies which cost $2 and not on the menu. Otherwise the side dishes dish are carb and starch heavy. Last... the drinks are meh. I watched my bartender/waitress make my drink. It was just a mix of stuff. Nothing measured. read more

We visited this place based on the rating of yelp and this is an instance where it's way off base. The chips are an embarrassment to society as a whole as well as the salsa. Nasty to say the least. The chicken in the enchiladas had to have been cooked a week before they made them. You could floss your teeth with the strands of meat. Don't let the looks deceive you, it's easy to pass this place. It's across from Shoppers in a small plaza. The ambiance is just okay, which is fine cause the food and mojitos are freakin fab tastic. In fact, I suggest taking a cab if you are in the Annapolis area or getting a designated driver because the mojitos pack a punch. The Sangria is great too. Let's talk food: try the ceviche, guacamole, tacos, and the best Lomo Saltado. You need to come prepared, I advise elastic waist pants, comfy shoes and your close friends. Unless you are greedy, you can keep the above, just keep a fork handy in case anyone comes near your food so you can jab them. I ordered the chorizo as a test -- was it going to be properly red and oily? Or would it be that weird, dry cat food consistency? Luckily for all, the chorizo is great. Flavorful, well prepared, and not so greasy as to be messy. The carnitas were good as well, and the trio of hot sauce condiments improved an already tasty dish. The waitress who took our order, never made eye contact and we were made to feel as if we were a burden to her. She was short and impatient with us. I love this place! We are regulars, and never have had a bad experience. The Lomo is a "go to" meal. Lomo is beef slow cooked with veggies and a delicious sauce. It is served over crispy French Fries. You should give it a try...always amazing. The chips, salsa, guacamole, etc. is consistently delicious. Lately, we have been going for lunch on Saturday or Sunday to avoid the evening crowds. The wait staff is very friendly and attentive. The decor of the restaurant needs a refresh, including the dining tables and chairs. Recommend: - Enchiladas with tomatillo sauce had good flavor, including the sauce - Margaritas on the rocks with salt had a good kick to it! Well I did not expect Mexican food at this level in Annappolis! Boy I was wrong! This may look bad from the outside but inside is one of those hidden gems that we all search out. So if your a fan of authentic Mexican than stop as soon as possible, if you are not sure put on your adventure hats and make the trip. The Lamb Babacoa I indulged in was just right, a beautiful braise with a nice smokey heat, wished I was a passenger so I could have some Mezcal to go with it! My friend adverse to heat had the mariscada soup which she survived , and actually loved, though to much food for her, I could not leave a thing! So there is this new, giant corporate mall-complex nearby that I drove through first trying to find Sin Fronteras Cafe. Obviously that isn't where Sin Fronteras Cafe is located. It is nearby in a rundown strip mall that is shares with a liquor store that gave me second thoughts about eating there once I saw. But I trusted these glowing Yelp reviews and I am glad I did. This is a place I would have never had the chance to eat at had Yelp not existed. I was just in town for a wedding and I probably would have grabbed some forgetful lunch from Chipotle had I not had Yelp (no disrespect to Chipotle). But instead I got to eat at Sin Fronteras Cafe, a place I am writing a review for 2 years after eating there because the food was so unforgettable. I am a vegetarian, so I got a vegetarian burrito. I don't remember if it was on the menu or if I had to ask for it special. Either way, it was amazing. I wish I could review other menu items, but I was only able to eat here once. My memory is a bit faded, but I remember the burrito being very original. It had some unique ingredients or sauces that set it apart from what you would get anywhere else. My guess is that it's because Sin Fronteras Cafe isn't a strictly Mexican food joint but really a broadly Latin American restaurant. In any case, go there yourself and bring along your vegetarian friends to try the vegetarian burrito they make there. I certainly hope they have it on the menu, it would be a shame if I was the only one to have the chance to have eaten it! EDIT: Apparently I've reviewed this place before. After reading the reviews we chose this restaurant for dinner after a day in DC. What a disappointment! It took way too long to be waited on. The bottle of water for the table was not cold and the glasses were warm (as if just out of the dishwasher). Our party of 4 ordered chicken quesadillas and chicken burritos. The chicken was dry. Our server did not seem happy to be there, and was probably over-worked due to the number of tables she covered! I would not recommend this restaurant. read more
