Stopped in for lunch and was totally disappointed. We ordered enchiladas in mole sauce, a carnitas burrito, a carnitas taco, and a shrimp taco. The mole sauce was bland and lacked depth, the tacos were ok, but the worst was the burrito. the rice inside had carrots and peas, like they just dumped some rice pilaf in there. Anyway, just another reminder never to eat in a restaurant that has mexican, honduran, and peruvian. Just pick one thing and stick with it. read more

When you walk in and see the odd layout and lacking decor you'll be questioning your decision even more. As soon as you sit down though and take a bite of the chips and salsa the server brings to your table, you'll know you came to the right place. Food was ready as soon as I arrived and the atmosphere there was nice. Got back to my place and the food was still hot, so I dove in and started eating. We wanted to give this place a second chance. Really bad experience. Service was bad, waiter was very unprofessional, he would just come take our order, in a rude manner, leave the food and leave. Would not ask if we needed anything else. Portions are small. Ordered a lomo saltado for $17 and literally only gave us 6 fries. The atmosphere was so bland and boring. They were playing vulgar music and so loud we couldn't converse, very unprofessional. If you're here, just go across the street to Mi Lindo Cancun Grill. Regret not going there in the first place as we usually do. There are no authentic hispanic drinks, only fountain drinks. What "hispanic" place does not have horchata?! Wouldn't come back here if they paid me. Lomo saltado was not good, but then again, It shouldn't surprise me. Don't waste your money coming here. read more

Service was a bit slow when we were first seated on this busy Friday night but things got better once the margarita arrived in its own special bathtub sized glass. My search for delicious and authentic Latin food in Annapolis - and the DMV - has ended with the discovery of Sin Fronteras Cafe. The name means without borders and the menu reflects that - there are dishes from Mexico, Peru, and other Latin countries on the menu. We learned that everything is made in house, which is rare these days. My husband and I enjoyed an amazing dinner at SF last night - he had the enchiladas (chorizo, beef and vegetable) with tasty tomatillo sauce and I had chicken enchiladas with a heavenly mole sauce (tasted as though it had been perfected by someone's mama). I've been searching for years for an excellent mole and am beyond thrilled to have finally found one that I will definitely crave! Our meals came with a side of casamiento: a mixture of rice, beans, corn and other good stuff. Usually a side like this is an afterthought without much taste, but not this one - it was savory and paired beautifully with the enchiladas. Topped it all off with a house made Margarita (or 2) served nice and cold in a big glass goblet. Walter - the charming owner - explained how he uses limes and other natural ingredients to make their own Margarita mix. You definitely can taste the delicious difference. Thankfully, I had some leftovers, which I gobbled up this morning - couldn't wait till lunch! We will be back to SF soon and often. Yum!!! read more

After two and a half visits to Sin Fronteras -- the 'half' being a visit where we were turned away ten minutes *before* closing time -- this is really a tale of two restaurants, one where the back of the house does a solid job turning out decent Mexican and Central American fare, the other where the front of the house just couldn't be bothered to put forrward the effort to make their guests feel welcome. Let's start with the drinks and the appetizer. The chips and salsa quickly come to the table, but the chips aren't all that good, the salsa's just okay, and you should absolutely skip the chile con queso, which is big on the queso and skimpy on the chorizo. The house margarita is served on the rocks, a solid margarita where the tequila comes through, helping you forget about those chips. Despite a slow start, some good entrées come out of the kitchen, including a chile relleno stuffed with pulled chicken and topped with a very nice green sauce; the steak baleadas, a Honduran take on a quesadilla filled with a nice carne asada; and the camarones Michucanos, sautéed shrimp served in a tasty chipotle sauce. Now, let's get back to the service. On our first visit, the owner was on the premises, quickly stopping by each of the tables to see how things were going, but our server was not particularly helpful when we were asking questions about the menu or with service in general. Despite the failed attempt to even make it in the front door on our second visit (we'll come back to that in a bit), we happened to be in Annapolis this past Sunday, so we decided to try once again. Apparently, the owner wasn't on site and, without his presence, we couldn't have felt like more unwelcome guests. The staff continually rushed us along throughout the meal, giving off that disinterested vibe - the vibe that makes it instantly obvious that these people would rather be anywhere else than in the restaurant. Even worse, as closing time approached, there were five members of staff (including our server) standing at the end of the bar, looking in our direction, all staring at us while we were finishing up our dinner. They made us feel incredibly uncomfortable, giving off that "would you finish up and leave already" look. I've never seen anything like it - yeah, I get that you've probably had a long day and want to go home, but this was simply inexcusable. Going back to the 'half-visit' I mentioned at the start of this review, we saw it happen again during this last visit, with a young couple turned away while there were still patrons in the restaurant dining prior to closing. I understand that you have to close the kitchen at some point, but this is taking things to an extreme, and turning away business WHILE OPEN (and with many empty tables) is not something I'd think a savvy restaurateur would do. Do this enough times and people won't come back, no matter what kind of food is coming out of the kitchen. While I like the idea of the 'no borders' concept, covering the cuisine of Central America, what Sin Fronteras gets really, really wrong is not fully embracing the true nature of the wonderful people of this region, people who are always welcoming, especially when they have guests in their homes. After giving this restaurant a second-second chance, my advice to my fellow Yelpers is to take your hard-earned dollars elsewhere, to a restaurant where the staff truly cares about you and your business. read more

We recently moved to the area, and had to try one of the top rated local restaurants! We went on an early weekday afternoon and easily got a booth. There was a lot of waitstaff present. Agreed with other reviews that they weren't especially friendly but no other complaints. The chips were warm and thick; didn't seem fresh or homemade but they were good. The salsa was fine if a little spicier than I'm used to. I got a classic frozen margarita; it's very large. It was good, not great; a little too foamy for my tastes. No flavored frozen margaritas available. My partner got a white sangria and it was nice; very boozy. My order: veggie fajitas. Came with beans and rice, sour cream and an avocado sauce which was very good. I wish it had come with guac. The actual fajitas were DELICIOUS. The veggies were roasted to perfection -- and it came with some delightful roasted asparagus which was such a nice surprise and so good! Tortillas didn't seem freshly made but they were good nevertheless. My partner got a chicken chimichanga. Hers also came with beans and rice; she would have liked it to come with sour cream and/or guac, too. She really enjoyed it! I might consider a veggie one next visit. I wish they had a smaller order of guac. We saw it at another table and it looked great but it's ENORMOUS and $10. While I'd love to be able to consume that much guac in one sitting, a half order for two people would be ideal. My partner was excited to try their Tres Leches cake but they were unfortunately out. Overall, we enjoyed our meal. Not a five star experience, but good enough that we'll be back to try more items on the menu. read more

And was blown away by the quality of the Latin American food - it's depth and slickness- despite the restaurant being in the middle of no where special. I just moved to Annapolis and tried this place based upon the stellar yelp reviews. Sadly I didn't have five star experience. Before I explain, it's worth noting that the management did the right thing at the end of our meal so I'm giving it 3 stars for that reason. We arrived at 7:30 on a Tuesday night for dinner and were greeted and seated immediately by the manager. Here's where the night goes south. It took 15 minutes for a server to take our DRINK order. I should have left after 10 instead of waiting. It took anther 10 for the only drink to be served. The server left the drink and walked off without taking our dinner order so yet another 10 minutes goes by before we ordered food! 25 minutes later our food finally arrived (55 minutes after we got to the restaurant). Our table ordered room vieja, a Cuban sandwich, and lamb barbacoa. The food was good except the rice that came with the barbacoa was dried out which was discovered by taking a bite and nearly cracking a tooth. The manager came to ask how we were after he comped the barbacoa since we didn't eat it. For that reason I'm not going to give a bad review. Perhaps we just had a bad server. I will never know because we are not likely to return. read more

I have always found the best places to eat might not be the most exciting aesthetically on the outside and that is true for Sin Fronteras. Nothing lavish, a deck with some patio furniture, meh, and it's next to liquor store, but I'll be ... if the food wasn't AMAZ-ING! The salsa and guacamole for starters is spicy and authentic. Good Mexican restaurants always great salsa and guacamole! Everyone needs to try the "Nachos Sin Fronteras" once in their life if they are nacho connoisseur as I am. I got the Chile Relleno for my entree. A+++ Staff is super attentive and very nice and seem to enjoy their guests being happy! Great place for a date night or family meal. I've held off on writing a review for this place because I've only done takeout for the past 4 months - and in full disclosure, since we've found this place, we've done takeout almost every single Friday night for the past 4 months. It's that good. Alas, I finally went inside last night. Ok, the decor leaves a bit to be desired. It's a hole in the wall: the furniture doesn't match, the servers' English isn't great, and the food is not "Mexican". But the food is AMAZING. I've spent some time in Mexico and Peru, and this place is legitimately doing real Central American food. If you're expecting a burrito with lots of Velveeta this is not your place. They make real mole sauce from 20 ingredients (including over 5 different peppers). Their Enchiladas with mole sauce is probably my favorite dish so far - but I've been impressed with everything I've had. Nothing has been just simply mediocre. Even the drinks are real, there's no "mixologist" on staff, it's just what people drink in Central America. Margaritas here aren't sweet, because they're not made from a mix...they have real citrus juices. Pisco Sours are their favorite. Locals are drinking Micheladas: tomato juice and corona. Then, we met the owner, Walter, last night. And he makes me want to come here even more frequently that we already do. He has a passionate and sincere interest in the quality of his food, having the attentive staff, and creating a cohesiveness between Latinos and other cultures in Annapolis. It is the rare place that gets a 5 from me. EVERY restaurant in Annapolis can learn a thing or two about customer service form Sin Fronteras and the owner Walter. Remembers most names and ALWAYS comes to say hello and make sure your visit is a good one! You walk into the place and while you may look out of place (you gringo) you are welcomed like family. And fed like family. Want to tweak a dish--no problem. Need special preparation--no problem. And it is VERY affordable. The food is not tex-mex. It is not Mexican. It is Latin and you can find Peruvian, Mexican, Salvadoran, and well as "Americanized Mexican" food here. My youngest daughter is a chicken nuggets kind of kid and while I could have got them here, she ventured out of her shell and now is a fan! The downside--the exterior. Very easy to miss. Next to the sketchy liquor store in the strip center across from Colonial Florist. The place also does not look too appetizing from the outside, but the interior is clean and bright. And if you do miss it--well you have missed out! I hear they are putting in an outdoor dining area this spring. read more

First off, this may seem trivial to non Annapolitans, but to my utter shock, Sin Fronteras Cafe's menu did NOT have any of the following offerings: crab cakes, crab balls, crab dip, crab soup, crab nachos, crab pretzels , crab quesadillas or any other concoction utilizing the ubiquitous blue crab. For some reason, EVERY restaurant here thinks it must feature this crustacean whether it makes sense to do it or not. God Bless Sin Fronteras for just sticking to their formula of Mexican and Latin American food. OK off the soap box. We were warmly greeted the second we walked in the door, not only by the hostess/server but the owner as well. He immediately introduced himself, shook our hands, and told us a bit about the place once we were seated. What a joy. We were hungry, but not starving, so we had no plans to order any appetizers, especially since we were immediately served warm chips and salsa. But when the owner described the freshly prepared guacamole made from small tender avocados from Guatemala, well let's just say we acquiesced. Wow, I knew we were in trouble when this giant sized serving arrived at our table. It could of easily satisfied a party of four. Maybe offer 1/2 a serving as well? Anyway, the guac was really really fresh, with plenty of creaminess and chunkiness. Fresh cilantro and tomatoes were sprinkled throughout, and all the ingredients just made a nice symphony of flavors and textures. It was really difficult to decide what to order as almost every dish sounded intriguing and delicious. Besides tacos, burritos, enchiladas and chimichangas, the menu was dotted with offerings from countries like Peru and Honduras. One entree sounded so good but it was lunch time, and I decided to save the pork chop a la mamajuana for my next visit. This dish was described as a thick pork chop marinated in citrus and topped with Serrano ham and onion rings served with mashed potatoes, casamiento and homemade juan liquor sauce. This aint no Chi Chi's! We ended up ordering a chicken chimi, Chile relleno with chicken, and baleadas stuffed with refired beans, freshly grated cheese, avocado, mantequilla and carne asada. Oh boy. The servings were beyond ample, and we laughed as we gazed over the mountain of food before us. The relleno was a delight to the eyes. A beautiful pepper swimming in a bright green and tart tomatillo sauce. It was filled to the gills with tender shredded chicken, and the poblano pepper was perfectly charred yet soft. A perfect vessel for delivering it's tasty stuffing. The chimi was ginormous, packed with rice, beans, chicken and spices. The avocado sauce that topped it was sublime. The baleadas were good, but not too exciting until I dipped the home made flour tortilla with all it's goodies into the relleno's tomatillo sauce. This put the dish into another dimension. All I can say is thank you thank you Sin Fronteras for injecting authenticity into the Annapolis restaurant scene. I just wish we hadn't wait that long to visit. As another reviewer said, the inconsistency here is off the charts. If everything goes well it is decent mexican food in the area. But that's a gamble, and hopefully you don't come on a bad night. Just now my wife ordered a vegetarian burrito. They even repeated the order as they wrote it down to ensure it was correct. But they brought back a steak burrito. When we mentioned it, they brought out the correct vegetarian burrito. But this time it was drenched in so much hot sauce it was inedible. For comparison, my carnitas burrito didn't have a drop of hot sauce. Unfortunately it was clear the kitchen was more interested in messing with patrons than fixing mistakes, so we didn't take a chance on giving them a third attempt. After a long wait, the manager finally checked us out because the server was rarely ever seen. Living in Arnold, I thought I had heard of just about every restaurant in the Annapolis area. To my surprise a co-worker suggested this place one night when we decided to meet for drinks. I LOVE Mexican food so was A-okay with the choice. I knew where it was so headed over after work. At first glance you might be a little turned off. It is in a strip mall, next to a liquor store. Not the greatest clientele visiting later in the evening... but thankfully when I walked inside I felt a million times better. Although the décor was a little dated.. And frankly, there wasn't much of it. I was immediately greeted with smiles and waves from all the servers. I arrived early so sat in the back as I waited for my friend. I ordered a house margarita which was amazing. Not too sweet. Not too big, and the price was just right. They brought over chips and salsa which was delicious. When my friend arrived the owner came over to ask where we had heard about his restaurant. He said he was from Miami and everything on the menu was fresh and made right on the location. They make everything new each day. Not only did it have mexican on the menu there were other latin flavors as well. Everything looked amazing. He brought us over their specialty appetizer (I forget the name) a tartar of shrimp/seafood served with crackers. It was wonderful. I opted for the Ropa Vieja, which was seasoned to perfection. There was a large portion of food that I could barely finish. I loved the atmosphere and the people that worked here. They treated us well and I will definitely be back. Absolutely LOVE this place. Annapolis has a number of quality Hispanic dining choices these days, with the upscale Jalapenos, always strong Mexican Cafe, and haute hipster Paladar, but our go-to home run hitter continues to be unassuming Sin Fronteras. The name means "Without Borders", which is totally their model. There's Mexican, Cuban, Central and South American options on the menu, featuring seafood, steaks, pork, and more, and so far, everything has been exceptional. Even my Havana, Cuba-born father gave it his blessing, and he can be pretty discerning. This is no "hey, let's be Spanish this week", flavor of the month type of place; it's the real deal. We've been several times now, and always share entrees and apps tapas-style. The Peruvian Saltado Steak remains my favorite, with the Ropa Vieja a close second. Spicy Guacamole is excellent, but make sure you like spicy. They don't play. The Shrimp Ceviche is loaded with the good stuff, and makes a perfect light and healthy lunch. And the Calamari is flash-fried (or grilled) and fresh, with no rubbery texture, and is served with green tomatillo sauce for dipping, unlike the boring canned marinara that so many other places include. Cuban sandwich is as good as I've had outside of Miami. For the picky, their Fajitas are fantastic. Haven't had the Tacos, but we can only assume they're of the same quality. There's a Taco Salad on the menu too. On the cocktail side, the mojitos and margaritas are fresh and well-poured, and they have a great Latino beer menu as well. In the bar itself, seems there's always a futbol game on the big screen. Sin Fronteras can get packed on weekend nights (and they don't take reservations), and loud, and can be an issue for folks with hearing difficulties. Service is full of personality but sometimes can be a bit slow on weekend nights, so it's best to just ease back, chill, and enjoy the moment (don't try to play "Beat the Clock" and get in and out for dinner in time to make the movie on a Friday or Saturday night. You'll almost certainly lose.) The owner is super-friendly, and always swings by the table to say hello and check in on the experience. Not a drive-by, but an actual conversation. DATE NOTE: If you're trying to impress a first date, and this person is more about the bling than the actual fare, Sin Fronteras does not give you the best option of getting to that second date (and seriously, who wants to be with THAT kind of shallow person anyway??). However, if you aim to dazzle them with your worldly knowledge of fine food in a unique, off-the-beaten path place that's not a chain and is (thankfully) out of the spotlight, you're in good hands. read more

The service is nice the people are great the food is wonderful the beer is cold but they really need to put some money back into the business. Wow, not sure if we hit this place on a bad night or what, but we were very disappointed with both the food and the service. The salsa was very watery and the chips were thicker than I like (and neither was refilled). I tried the balelas and I didn't particularly care for them. We didn't get a lot of refills on our drinks, but the cardinal sin of the wait staff was to put the flaming hot plate of fajitas directly in front of our grabby one-year-old. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the making of this Yelp review, but unfortunately, we won't be going back. But to me, five stars means that the food was something better than I've had anywhere, remarkable, something that I haven't stopped thinking about since I left, and I'm planning a return visit in two days. We're not from around here, but we're in town for a few days, and this place appeared to be a Yelp highlight, so we tried it. Phenomenal. You'll find this in a little shopping center next to a liquor store near the much more prestigious new town center. We came here based on Yelp reviews, and we were not disappointed. Chips and salsa were very good, but the real standout was the Ropa Vieja. Definitely try this dish! The meat was so tender, and just perfectly delicious. Sides were beans and rice, and plantains. All of it was to die for. I also enjoyed a margarita, and it was very delicious! Not from a mix. For dessert, I tried the fried banana. Wow, it was really, really, good.
