Really tasty food. We were very hungry and tried many menu items - all were delicious. The freshly made guacamole was fabulous - big chunks of avocado, plenty of cilantro, a little onion and jalapeno (hint: ask for it spicy), served in a molcajete. Tortillas also freshly made, very delicate with a good earthy taste from the grill. We especially loved the pupusas and the baleadas, and enjoyed the enchiladas and chile relleno. You could get by spending less than $10 per person here, depending on your hunger level. We spent about $30 per person for appetizers, entrees and margarita. Atmosphere is a little off-putting at first, until the friendly servers greet you - big screen TVs in both the bar & dining room, tables arranged around the edge of the rooms. I have NO idea how this place is so highly rated. Baleadas must be Spanish for "bland", because theres no flavor in them. The salsa was like pace pecante sauce that they just poured out of a jar. the carne asada was not carne asada. It was an over cooked slab of beef drowned and covered in a weird, unpalatable, acidic, canned tomato sauce/juice that covered all the flavor of the steak. The rice beans "marriage" side dish had pieces of lettuce and carrots in it, assuming they used a dirty mixing bowl from when they mixed someone else's salad and didn't at least wipe it out before they mixed my side dish. Just lazy. Just a compete let down and nothing was even close to what the pictures or other reviews suggested to even warrant a second try. read more

I have been there 5 times. 4 times it was pretty good. I would give it a B+ those times. And the fifth time I didn't like what I ordered. The dining area is average. I went to this restaurant based upon the high scores it received on Yelp and while it was an okay dining experience it was hardly memorable. The service was excellent, the place clean though its décor was low overhead in nature. The décor is not of particular concern to me. The food however was just so-so. I have eaten much better Mexican / South American cuisine elsewhere in the Annapolis area and I was underwhelmed with what was on offer here. I tried the grilled calamari which was nicely done and the Peruvian steak strips dish which was okay. I am not trying to damn with faint praise, but how anyone would rate this place above average is beyond me. Saying all that, the prices were reasonable, the service good, but the food just average. The server never asked me if I wanted yucca instead of fries (which was an option) My sandwich was super greasy, to the point It was running down my fingers and I couldn't stomach it, so I only ate half. The lomo had too much cumin, and the steak was poorly seasoned. The plantains were frozen, which you could taste. Excellent and numerous Yelp reviews put this place on the map for me. It's really more of a local, neighborhood haunt than a destination. The appeal is warm and colloquial. The decor is cheesy but authentic for a "'round the way" spot. Nothing high brow about this spot whatsoever...just an earnest, sincere local Latin cuisine spot. That said, we had drinks and grilled Calamari to start. The margarita was tight but my straight up Grey Goose martini came with cranberry juice...they fixed that right away. I had the leg of lamb and she the shrimp dish. The rice for both of our was cold and while the lamb was exceptionally well prepared, it came sitting in a pool of grease that detracted from the quality of the product ion. Her shrimp dish was decent but the shrimp were smallish. If had not heard so many good things about this place, I never would have stopped to eat here. From the outside the place does not look very inviting. It is located in a run down strip mall next to a liquor store. Upon walking inside, the decor doesn't build much confidence either (it could stand a major face lift). We were greeted by a very friendly server who instantly said there were three things we just "had to try", the margaritas, the sangria and the monitors. I ordered a margarita and my wife had the sangria. Both were very good and you could taste that they did not go light on the alcohol. We later ordered a monitor as well, it was good, but it had Malibu rum in it which I could have done without. The server came back and again said there was something we "had to try", the guacamole. It was hands down the best we have ever had, even better than anything we had in Mexico. The owner came to our table several times. He told us that everything In made fresh every day. It was obvious that he takes great pride in the food he serves. We ordered our entrees; I had the Ropa Fritas and my wife the Chicken Chimicanga. Both were nothing short of amazing!! Do not be put off by the appearance of his place, the friendly service and the high quality of the fresh food they serve make this place a hit. Ok, this place is difficult to find, but trust me, it is worth it. I've been there twice and seemed to miss it both times. Once you find it, you get it. Plenty of parking available, next to a liquor store. Onto the place... it's very roomy, clean and welcoming. You can sit in the main area by the bar, or they have a room to the side for more seating and bigger parties. Nicely decorated and very organized, even when dead busy. The owner is always on the floor greeting newcomers and regulars alike, arranging seating and working with his servers. This is a huge plus for me. He's extremely personable, and trust me, he'll drop by your table and make sure you're all taken care of, and even suggest things to try or explain the meals if you're not familiar with them. The first time I was there, he even directed my partner via phone how to get in, because he was lost coming from the Glen Burnie area. So if his passion for his business makes it to the food, you're in for a real treat. The food has been fantastic both times. First, they start you off with warm chips and salsa (not the jarred stuff, that's for certain). 1st time I ordered Ropa Vieja, and it was seasoned to perfection. The pork was just delicious, and the portions are bountiful and plenty. 2nd time it was the Cuban Sandwich, and I think that's become my favorite. So simple and yet so delicious and full of flavor. Oh, and don't forget to get an appetizer... I'd recommend the yucca. The chicharron that comes with it is fried just crispy enough on the outside, but melt-in-your-mouth on the inside, and the yucca is soft (I get it fried, but you can have it boiled--equally delicious). I have to mention dessert, because the reason we went there again was because my partner LOVED their banana tempura. If you like banana, you have got to try it. I don't like bananas, but it looks fantastic, with ice cream, whipped cream and cherries. Last of all, the prices are so reasonable for the food and the service you get. Next time you're in town, definitely give them a try. That's my one stop next time I am across the bridge, and we've tried so many restaurants, many of which just fade in memory. I had always liked Sin Fronteras restaurant in Annapolis but it may be a very long time before they see me again. While the atmosphere is sparse the food is good (for Annapolis), but the service was offensively poor Saturday night. Naturally, it was a comedy of errors. I asked for beans to accompany my rice, but instead they just didn't give me the rice at all. I was actively eating the chips and salsa together with my entree but they snatched them away without asking (I wanted the chips for the beans since they didn't give me the rice.) The server tried to take my plate three times (and a busser tried once) while my friend was still eating. It may not be fine dining, but that is just the most basic service etiquette around. Obviously, the repeated attempts to clear early made my friend feel awkward as if eating too slow, which is exactly why all plates are cleared at the same time, period. Correct service is correct service; it does not matter if you're fine dining or a truck stop. I was 100% planning to have another drink and dessert, but as soon as they finally snatched my plate away they dropped the check, which we had not requested. (It was before 9:30pm on a Saturday night--they weren't waiting to close or waiting to seat other tables.) We split the bill but my friend insisted on paying the tip (over 20% despite the terrible service). Yet for their craptacular service they added a $14 tip to my ($34) tab. Tried to call them but they have the wrong area code on their own receipt. But, hey, I did have a lovely cocktail and dessert a couple blocks away at Jalapeños after being driven away. Sigh. Called the bank to dispute the charge, but the restaurant has lost a lot more than the $14 unauthorized charge. read more

Sin Fronteras is a real gem I'm returning to! Doesn't look like much from the outside but don't be fooled--the food is out of this world. Actually it's Latin American, but not only Mexican. This restaurant is definitely a home in the wall. Parking is limited and it's located right next to a liquor store. I wasn't quite sure about it at first. We went here for dinner on a Tuesday night. We all ordered margaritas and guacamole to start. Both were good, not the best but good! I had the pollo tropical which was amazing! My mom had the margarita salmon which wasn't very good. I do have a small child and it was a great environment for him. The servers were quite accommodating to his needs and keeping him entertained. I was hoping for a little more given the high reviews by others. No complaints about the service. Our servers were attentive to our needs offering additional chips and water when our table ran out. Unfortunately, the spacing between the appetizer and dinner was a little too long and it took about 20 minutes to get our check. With regards to the food, my wife and brother loved their meals; however, I ordered the vegetable chimichanga which was advertised as "fried" but seemed more like it was baked and tasted like it was a premade shell. The filling at one end was great, but at the other end was bland in seasoning and spice. I started at the bland end so it ended on a bit of a high note. I generally try to have moderated expectations for the hole in the wall restaurants, or those in strip malls and even compared to some of those, I feel like you could do better by just going to Chevy's down the street. I have to admit to being a bit of a "judge-a-book-by-its-cover" kind of guy as restaurants go, so it was always easy to pass this place with its nondescript, generic storefront look without a second glance. Being a California transplant with a love of good Mexican food, however, I'm glad I finally took the chance. You've got a love a place where the owner cares enough and has enough class to greet you at the door, ask if this is your first visit, tells you a little bit about his restaurant, and then leads you to your table. It's a comfortable, laid-back kind of place with its brightly-colored, Mexican cantina color scheme. I loved the vibe of the front room where the bar is, and the TV's set to the game of the day. Belly up to the bar if you just want to have a drink and take in the game, or grab one of the many tables in the same room if you just want to grab a bite in the company of the cheerful crowd. The large dining room in back is quieter if that's what you're after. The GF and I weren't that hungry, so mostly we picked things off the appetizer menu. Everything we had was fresh, well-prepared, and delicious. The service was friendly and efficient. The menu has a great selection of items from Mexico and points south, and I look forward to going back when we have a bigger appetite, and time to try their margaritas. I'm a serious burrito lover. While on the surface it seems like there couldn't be too much difference between something comprised chiefly of beans, rice, and a flour tortilla, I've been searching tirelessly for the perfect one. I think my search may have finally come to an end thanks to Sin Fronteras. First of all, as the owner cheerfully explained to us when my party of 5 came in, they make everything fresh in house. No microwaves, no cans, and nothing frozen. You can seriously taste the difference. The beans were to die for; hearty and slightly smoky and unlike any black beans I've ever had. And the vegetarian burrito actually had vegetables in it! Asparagus, onions, carrots, and I don't even know what else because I was so blinded by the euphoria the food inspired that I couldn't be bothered to pay close attention to what I was eating. The fresh guacamole on top set it off perfectly but I appreciated the fact that they applied it with a light hand rather than smothering it like most places do; the balance of flavors was spot-on. The margarita was also one of the best I've had. Big, strong, not too sweet, and just the right accompaniment to a heavy meal. For $7 it's quite a good deal! Plus the service was great. My group was a combination of vegans, vegetarians, gluten free-ers, and omnivores but our respective restrictions were handled with ease. One dish was forgotten but it wasn't a big deal and given how complicated our order was I was rather impressed that there was only one mishap. And the waitress was so sweet that I can't even bring myself to deduct a star for that. Whatever you are doing, stop right now and head over to Sin Fronteras. You will not be disappointed. read more

Sin Fronteras should be nicknamed Sin Frivolities. This is straight forward Mexican food without the typical ornaments that paper the walls and menus of other restaurants. I'm not sure if that always speaks authenticity, but it surely doesn't hurt that food seems to be the focus here and they execute well. First off, you need to look for Sin Fronteras - it is hidden away near the busy intersection of Forest Dr and Rt 2 in Annapolis. Once you've discovered it, be prepared for a spartan interior and very friendly staff. The guacomole is chuncky but fresh, and the chicarrones en salsa verde is deliciously covered in onions. I really like it here. The chips and salsa were good. Guac was fresh and very good. I got carnitas tacos- yum! Just so good! I love places where I can get solid carnitas and this is definitely it. Margaritas are strong! I love me some margs, but after one bigger marg I was tipsy. The patio here is very nice and big. The waitstaff is very, very good. The owner even came to talk to me and see how the food was. He also moved an extra table out to the patio bc it was full and I prefer to sit outside when I can. And unlike the old beer commercial cliche'; this food not only tastes great, it is very filling. And while I haven't tried everything (yet) my gut tells me it is all wonderful. My only complaint about this little hidden restaurant is it's location and the parking facilities. It is innocently tucked behind a dive of a liquor store in a less than mediocre retail building .The parking lot and conditions are simply pathetic compared to most small shopping centers . Beyond that, I consider this place a "diamond in the rough'. The Mexican cuisine was very good along with the above average service. I've been to a lot of Mexican restaurants in the area with terrible service compared to this place. The Owner/ Manager was very cordial and sincerely asked us how everything was. The prices are very reasonable, but we thought the beer, wine and liquor for the atmosphere was a bit pricey. The dining area is average at best , but the bar and outside wood deck/ seating area is a big improvement and added a positive touch.
