The restaurant is very spacious and clean and they have a big parking lot too. The free chips and salsa in the beginning is amazing. The chips are hot and not stale at all and the salsa is flavorful too. We got ceviche as our appetizer (definitely recommend). I got a steak burrito and it was a little dry. The filling could have been better, but it wasn't bad. They also have outdoor seating so I can't wait to be back once it's warmer out. Overall, great experience! read more

Extremely Disappointing Experience Today. This was one of my favorite hidden treasures in Annapolis to bring folks to - this evening was VERY different. We were seated in the back room, after being told the deck was closed. There were 2 parties that were seated after us. Their orders were taken before us. Subsequently, they were served before our party. While we were eating the waiter came by, asking if we wanted something else. We said in 5 min, we would like to order additional drinks. When he passed by, on the way to deliver the check to one of the other tables, we flagged him down only to be told, the bar was closed. We did not see him again - he left the bill/ close out to his younger co-worker. He (the younger co-worker) did this very well while we listened to the vacuuming in the other room, again emphasizing that our customer experience was not valued. This experience left me feeling disrespected, not valued as a customer, and totally embarrassed that I had verbally praised this place prior to our visit. There is a sales adage- it cost much more to get a NEW customer than it does to keep an existing one. Over the years we continued to try support this business, today they showed me how very much they do not appreciate my business. As an aside, probably not important, but I always tip at least 20% in cash - NOT TODAY. I can only assume that probably is not important to these servers either. read more

They probably put the chimi straight from the fryer into the container. A waste of money.Called to speak with a manager around lunch on a weekday and was told that none were available. Better option is the taco truck on forest drive in the VFW parking lot. Avoid Sin Fronteras until they hire a supervisor to oversee safe food handling and switch out those damn styrofoam containers. Styrene, the main ingredient in polystyrene foam, is a likely human carcinogen, according to both the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the National Toxicology Program. In mice, it causes lung tumors. In people, it increases the risk for leukemia and lymphoma. read more

Nice place for a chill, easy breezy happy hour. They had a good variety on their main menu but nothing vegetarian on their happy hour menu. The food itself was great but the waiters were not very attentive. I had to call them over to ask for little things. The place is not visually appealing. It would be nicer to eat outside but it was still too cold outside to do so. The inside of the restaurant looks like it could use a lot of updating but it is kept clean. Everything is on the sour side + spotty service = a fairly disappointing visit. After roaming around the Renaissance Festival and gotten sick of gigantic turkey leg and mead, a large group of us were craving for Mexican food in Annapolis. Sin Fronteras Cafe is yelp ranked as one of the best, so we couldn't wait to get in and devour the food. Unfortunately after the initial pleasant welcome, chips, salsa and water, the service became spotty in that we had to ask three times for water and chips refill. Beyond that, the food was uneven: - Fried calamari was average, as there were too much breading - Shrimp ceviche was way too sour, though the ingredients seem fresh - Guacamole was pretty good (and surprisingly not sour) - Meat and veggies on fajitas were burnt by the time they had arrived - Margarita salmon was also too sour. The mashed potatoes didn't taste fresh. Grilled asparagus was decent. Overall I think with better service and food tweaking, this can potentially be a 4-star restaurant. But I may have to venture back to gigantic turkey leg before trying Sin Fronteras again. read more

I was craving a Cuban and ropa vieja, and SF scratched the itch. Housemade chips were served with semi-spicy, watery salsa. They were kind enough to bastardize our sandwich upon request, which had a properly conservative ratio of bread to pork and swiss, plus a few pickles. Simple french fries cooked through without seasoning. Ropa vieja and sweet plaintains were both a little dry (and the vegetables dotting the meat could have been cooked down more) so I'd give Cubano's the edge on those; I do like that it was accompanied with casamiento instead of segregated rice and beans. Future hit list: cordero a la barbacoa, pork chop a la mamajuana, yuca con chicharon, lomo saltado, baleada, and a giant margarita. read more

A couple of weeks ago, I was out with friends lamenting about the lack of good Mexican restaurants in the area when a friend suggested that I try Sin Fronteras. I was surprised to learn of its location, as I'm frequently in the area but never noticed it before.....guess it pays to go back just one more block, huh? So on Saturday, after being beat up by the trainer, I decided to stop in and reward myself. They do have outdoor seating on the deck with umbrellas, but it was a little warm with a threat of rain, so I opted to go indoors. Inside was nothing fancy, but it was clean and colorful, and the staff were friendly and quick to seat me. I opted for the Pollo Tropical, and I can say that I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for something not deep fried or smothered in cheese. A juicy tender chicken breast covered with mango salsa and served with a side of rice......let me just say that if you're afraid of flavor and prefer food that is bland, this is not the place for you. But if you want something that's going to explode with flavor, then come on in! And how could I forget the chips and salsa? While the salsa was a little hotter than what I typically like, the flavor was fantastic, very different from anything I've had in any of the other places. To be honest, I wouldn't really call this place Mexican, although they do have some standard Mexican fare, but they have such a nice mix of Central American options too. I was searching curiously on my yelp app for cuban food relatively close to home. Up popped Sin Fronteras Cafe. Reviews were good and they had exactly what I was looking for: Ropa Vieja. So I grabbed my foodie partner and out we went. Place was as previously described, hard to spot locale next to a liquor store so no surprises there. But it was pretty busy which is a good sign to me. We were a little concerned at first as the chips and salsa were simply not very good. The salsa was ok but the chips were severely lacking. Cold, not salted, hard and oily. My fear of disappointment was about to set in. The margarita was good though and so was the sangria so we skipped the chips and ordered our meals. Ropa Vieja for me. Delicious! The beef was tender and well seasoned. Plantains sliced on the bias, not too thin, not too thick, fried to their natural soft, sweetness. Just like my ex-husband used to make :) I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of my meal. Pescado Oaxaca for my pal. Again another score! The fish was moist and flaky covered in a wine and pepper sauce with bits of ham that added just the right amount of saltiness. Rice and beans were good and overall both dishes were a hit. The owner is a dear. Personable and friendly. The exact touch one likes to find when dining at small, local establishment. It was a flour tortilla with beans, meat, avocado, cheese inside. Very tasty! We also enjoyed some garlic shrimp for appetizer. It was really really good too!!! Came here for lunch over the weekend. Not too many people eating in the restaurant, but several people came to pick up takeout. The servers were very attentive. They immediately brought out salsa and warm chips. We were impressed with the food and entree portions - they're pretty big. There's nothing bad to say about the guacamole. Chicken fajitas were tasty. It came with 3 tortillas but our waiter offered more. The Lomo saltado (with yucca) had excellent flavor. Pondering my options for Mexican food while in Annapolis & Yelp led me to Sin Fronteras Cafe. It was hopping on a Saturday night and the wait for a table was less than 20 minutes. The owner came by to introduce himself and to welcome me. He asked how I heard about Sin Fronteras Cafe & also explained that the food is cooked to order, not microwaved & freshly made onsite. He didn't lie; all of my items were on point. I started with the shrimp ceviche & the fried calamari. My main entree was the chicharron en salsa verde. That translates to crispy sautéed pork with onions and cilantro topped with green tomatillo sauce served with white rice and warm tortillas. I was very satisfied with the portion size and the price paid. Our hostess Daniella was courteous and even gave the run down on how to make horchata at home. I appreciate it. It showed that she could relate to customers and that she enjoys a good drink too. Fair warning was given to patrons who were dining that the lights would be dimmed momentarily for an unsuspecting diner celebrating a birthday. It was a surprise for her indeed and her family/friends appreciated to cooperation & birthday singing from neighboring tables. There is an outdoor dining area if the weather permits. Lomo Saltado and enchilada mole were fantastic! We will definitely be going back. The flavors of the dishes we ordered had depth in flavor and the meats were seasoned just right. They have a good selection of seafood dishes to chicken, beef and pork. The mole wasn't super sweet w the right amount of cocoa and texture. A combination of word-of-mouth and Yelp reviews finally got the wife and I to pack up the rug monkeys and head down to Annapolis to give Sin Fronteras a try. Boy, are we glad we did. Authentic, high-quality food served by friendly folks for reasonable prices - what's not to like? While the strip mall it's in is a little on the run-down side, the biggest drawback to the location is simply getting out of the parking lot. Otherwise, it's just a nondescript strip mall within viewing distance of the newish Parole town center complex. The staff is quite friendly and the owner (Walter) seems to know all the regulars and came to every table to ask how things were, and even stayed with me to chat about the finer points of Ropa Vieja. But let's talk about the food, shall we? To include cocktails, of course. We started with a mojito, a margarita, and two Shirley Temples for the carpet primates. The margarita was big and strong; classic flavor and high quality. The mojito was made with coconut rum - unusual but really, really tasty. Their sangria is also top notch. We got the guacamole (mild, for the kids) and it was great - obviously freshly squooshed in the kitchen - filled with herbs and onions and huge chunks of avocado. The chips and salsa were good too; the salsa is mild and crowd-friendly; the chips are warm, crunchy, and not overly salted. For the main course, I got the baleadas (one chorizo, one chicken). I've never had these before, and I can wholeheartedly recommend the chicken as it melded well with the light, fluffy nature of the dish. The chorizo was tasty but a little too dense when accompanying the cream and avocado within. My wife got what I can only call The Giant Pork Chop Covered In Goodness. The chef knows how to cook pork! It's marinated in citrus and spices, then grilled and covered with a wonderful sauce and set of toppings. If you like pork, this is a dish that's not to be missed. As usual, the kids got quesadillas, which were indeed round and filled with cheese. They also love black beans, so we ordered two sides for them. They make theirs with rosemary which adds an interesting depth to them; not a combination I would have ever thought of, but it works. Do not miss this place. It's certainly some of the best Mexican / South American food we've had! It's in the process of being discovered, and I think they'll maintain their quality and friendliness as they grow - it just may become really hard to get a table! read more

This place never disappoints! We came for dinner on Saturday, July 18 and sat on the porch. It was a little hot and we ended up with the entire porch to ourselves, but inside was packed. My boyfriend and I were celebrating his birthday, and we each ordered drinks (a frozen margarita and a Corona), along with queso and guacamole for appetizers. The queso was very good, but was completely overshadowed by the guacamole. It was amazing!! Fresh made and so flavorful. I could have eaten just that as my meal and been completely happy. We each ordered a chimichanga as our main dish. They were great - fresh, stuffed full of messy, cheese and beans, and huge portions. I think the prices are very fair overall, and comparable with other restaurants in the area. Service was prompt, but I am never able to tell who my actual server is because 3 or 4 people are bringing you food and drinks throughout your meal. For that reason, and because the porch is next to a busy road and isn't that scenic, I give Sin Fronteras 4 stars. Otherwise, they are amazing! read more

We all know where to go to for ok Mexican food, but you won't be able to go back to those places once you've been here. This is the best I've had in a looooong time. We had the shrimp quesadilla, which was amazing, and I had a tasty margarita. Then we took home the Chicharron en Salsa Verde (roasted crispy pork) and the Vieja Ropa (shredded marinated beef with plantains). Both dishes were divine, especially the pork -- and the plantains! The owner greeted us and was very friendly and had a bunch of great suggestions about the menu. The inside was big but not too noisy -- perfect for relaxing and having some great food. Top this off with tasty food and good prices, and you have a recipe for success. The Horchata was great. Shrimp taco was the best I've had and it cost $2.50!! I mean, thats just for a taco, but it was flavorful, good textures, and great seasonings. Baleadas con chorizo y huevo are also good. They made one with meat and one without for my vegetarian companion. They have a lot of vegetarian options and are very willing to adjust the menu for particular eaters. Brace yourself for this one. I went in especially for the lamb shank which looked nice on pic. We started with the SHRIMP CEVICHE plus CORDERO A LA BARBACOA plus CHILE RELLENO. The Shrimp had zero taste and felt like eating some sponge with lime juice. Soooo disappointing. Gets worse though, the CORDERO A LA BARBACOA (lamb shank) had absolutely no flavor. Went here for the first time on Saturday evening. It was a very early dinner but we were reassured since other people with kids were walking in ahead of us. It is tucked back off of Forest Drive. You'll miss it if you aren't looking for it. And it's a little dive-y on the outside. Bright and clean inside Friendly staff. We are looking forward to going back. It was very good. Chips and salsa were very fresh. Salsa wasn't hot enough for my hubby but it was perfect for me. Hubby got the ropa vieja and cleaned his plate. Said it was so good. I had no plans to order an appetizer, but Patricia (our server) described the fresh made guacamole and my date ordered the spicy version, it was soooooo good it was worth every fat calorie it contained. Love love love this place. Very casual, very laid back, very loud. Doesn't seem so organized with the service but gentle reminders and you are back in. The owner keeps a watchful eye too. The food is hands down, off the charts, great. The region of Mexico is authentic and the flavors are like nothing I've had before locally. We started with the guacamole, shrimp ceviche, and chile con queso dip. They asked about the desired spice level for the guacamole. And it was made to our order. The queso was also excellent. The ceviche was good but, in hindsight, I would save the room for the next course. For my main, I got the Margherita salmon with asparagus but substituted black beans for the mashed potatoes. OMG amazing! I would have a hard time ordering something different in the future. The Margaritas should come with a warning. Although there is parking, seriously don't even think of driving and drinking these. We were there on a Saturday night. My only complaint would be that it closed too early. And when we went to order dessert, the waiter said the kitchen had already closed (with no warning!). Otherwise it would have been a perfect 5 star experience. Stopped in for lunch and was totally disappointed. We ordered enchiladas in mole sauce, a carnitas burrito, a carnitas taco, and a shrimp taco. The mole sauce was bland and lacked depth, the tacos were ok, but the worst was the burrito. the rice inside had carrots and peas, like they just dumped some rice pilaf in there.
