I rarely find myself compelled to write reviews, but after my recent experience at Bird's Nest, I feel that I should caution others to save your money/time- particularly for those considering a balayage service from Brandon. Misguided Styling: Upon my arrival, I presented clear photo references for the "cowboy copper" balayage I desired. Brandon agreed and we got to it. I started to feel concerned when he left to get an ice cream while my highlight was processing because it took so long and I feared the process time was going to leave me way more blonde than I asked. Regrettably, after 3.5 hours, I left the salon with a result that absolutely SHOCKED me and bore no resemblance to what was discussed. Instead of the warm, copper tones I had hoped for, I was left with a choppy, unblended, overly blonde outcome, devoid of the color and dimension we agreed on. Lack of Communication: The stylist deviated from our agreed-upon plan without consulting me, opting for a golden blonde hue that was never discussed. In fact, he said "I felt cowboy copper was too autumn for springtime and that it was too close to what you already had and am happy that you trusted me to go more golden blonde". I NEVER said yes to that direction, and frankly Brandon went completely rouge and did whatever he wanted. Questionable Customer Service: Upon expressing my dissatisfaction to salon management, I encountered resistance because of their no refund policy and was pressured to give them a second chance. Rather than addressing the evident flaws in the service and photos I provided, I was met with justifications citing the stylist's years of experience. While expertise is valued, it should not excuse poor execution, going off the rails, and a failure to meet my basic ask. Resolution and Cost of Rectification: After two more visits to the salon to meet the owner and protracted negotiations, I accepted a partial refund from the very kind owner Gina for $200, a mere fraction of the additional expenses incurred to rectify the botched balayage. The subsequent corrective measures required extensive restructuring and re-coloring, resulting in significant hair loss, damage, and additional costs exceeding $500. Final Thoughts: My experience at Bird's Nest was deeply disappointing, and it has left me questioning the integrity of their services. Despite attempts at resolution, the lack of accountability and professionalism demonstrated throughout this ordeal is concerning. Had my third visit to BNS today and Joanna is just the best!! When I first went I hadn't had a haircut in 2 years. She gave me a beautiful cut that was as exactly what I wanted. She is thoughtful and kind and understands what her clients want. The cut looked great when I left the salon, and looks great when I blow out, but most importantly it's looks fab when it air dries. Today's visit was for color to blend my greys and my terrible home hair dye jobs and wow it's incredible. I haven't had my hair professionally dyed in 6 years and I am so glad I did it!!!! Bird's nest salon is hands down the best place I have ever gotten a hair cut and Brandon specifically has given me amazing hair cuts every single time. I am very conscious about my hair and thus very sensitive to a bad cut, but I always walk out of this salon feeling taken care of and more confident. There are times I walk in and tell Brandon exactly what I want and they nail it. There are other times I'm feeling more creative and Brandon provides me with excellent input and we come up with something new together. I have gotten a range of short and medium cuts and Brandon has displayed a really deep understanding of curly/wavy hair. It also doesn't hurt that the price has stayed very affordable given the quality of services. Every once in a while you get really lucky and you just click with a stylist. From the moment I sat in her chair, I could tell Amanda and I spoke the same language. She understood exactly what I wanted and delivered on it impeccably. It's been about a month now and I am STILL getting compliments on my hair. The fresh cut and layering was just what the doctor ordered but more importantly she *nailed* the color. I have pretty dark Ash blonde hair (so much so it's gotten hard to call it "blonde" in the past few years) and the balayage highlights she gave me have lightened it beautifully for a nice summery look. She completely understood the cool tones I was pursuing and had excellent advice about maintaining it between touch-ups so that it wouldn't become brassy over time. I visited this asking for a hair wash and blow dry. I was 5 mins late, Parking is quite difficult around here. I was initially refused service and when I explained there was no cut just wash and dry they took me in. My stylist washed my hair in 15 mins and said they had no time to blow dry. The stylist went away to sit by the reception. The next appt customer arrived 40 mins after, which was plenty of time to help dry my hair. I had to dry it myself and pay full price when I left. read more

Great Salon, great proactive measures for COVID. I 've gone here ever since I moved to Chicago and have had my hair cut and colored by a few stylists, most recently Amanda for the past two years. Every time, every stylist has been amazing. I was concerned about getting my hair cut given the COVID crises but the salon has taken things very seriously, between temperature checks, checklist for travel, required hand washing upon entry, masks and keeping people inside to a minimum they definitely made me feel safer. Saw Allison for the first time after I found out my other stylist had left the salon, and WOW was I impressed. I was planning to do a bit of a style change and add some layers that were "not quite bangs" which could have been scary, but from the minute I sat down, I felt comfortable with her and knew that I could trust her for a great cut (says a lot for me lol). It was the type of experience where I could tell right away that not only was she super skilled at her craft, but that she had an eye for what would look great. If you are a guy living in the greater Avondale/Logan/Humbolt tri-hood region of Chicago, and can't wait in line for a trim, go to The Bird's Nest. A haircut at the Nest is a shave more (ho ho!) than Joe's or Pete's, but appointments are de rigeur, so when time is money, its an excellent investment. I know, I know, there is no beer or punk rock music, but you can always head over to The Mutiny later if that's the fix you need. More importantly, you won't spend the inflated prices across the Square at Art + Science. What's not to like? I work with Gina and she's fantastic. She's very friendly and an excellent listener. If you have specific preferences, she'll make it happen. It is also on the Spring Rewards network, so you'll get a little money back if you are a long term customer. They explain everything they're going to do before they do it, which I appreciate. As for the service, I can't say enough about how awesome my stylist Brandon is! I had been a basic/chain haircut guy for most of my life. Brandon was the first person to make me feel that he cared about how my hair turned out without being condescending. I barely ever get haircuts because pretty much every place I go to assumes, for some reason, that I'm going to straighten my naturally curly hair every day, and give me haircuts that don't really work for my hair type. However, I'd heard that Bird's Nest specialized in curly hair so I figured I would give it a try. I had a morning appointment with Gina. She was super friendly as soon as I walked in the door. Given my curly hair, I had initially talked about getting a Ouidad haircut - a haircut that thins out curly hair from the inside. However, after looking over my hair for a good ten minutes, Gina recommended that I not get a Ouidad haircut because I have such thin hair. I really appreciated this - the Ouidad cut is almost twice as much, and instead of just giving it to me to make an extra dollar, she suggested I save the money. Gina cleary put a lot of thought and care into the best way to cut my hair and it worked well. She discussed it with me for a long time and was careful to make sure that I was happy with it. She did a great job as a hairstylist. She was also really friendly and talking to her was fun. Gina also gave me a list of products that she thought I'd like, but I wasn't quite ready to drop $200 on styling equipment. She used a curl cream on me, which I was glad I ended up not purchasing, because it made my hair pretty greasy. They're very pushy with the products here! The products may be pricey, but the haircut cost itself is definitely not bad ($57) and very worth it. I ended up being very happy with my haircut. The long layers that Gina gave me work really well with my fine curly hair. She also managed to make it a lot healthier and take off the split ends without making it too short, even though it's been over a year since my last haircut. My bangs are a litte too choppy, that's my only complaint. Still, it's the first time I've been happy with my hair in a while and my curls look great. read more

There were 5 ladies in our group that needed hair and makeup for a Saturday wedding, and we had Allison and Brandon for the whole morning. The salon opened a little early for us, dedicated 2 out of the 3 chairs for the wedding party, and allowed us to bring in our own food and drinks. It is a small salon, so there was not much extra room for the party to spread out, but we knew this going in. I wanted to stay local with our vendors, as our wedding was in Bucktown and we live in the area. Bird's Nest was great from the start. I had a "test run" with Allison for hair and makeup about a month in advance. We went through some pictures and talked about what I was looking for. I've always hated getting my hair cut. I'm a low maintenance kind of girl when it comes to hair so I'm never someone to use tons of product. But I'm super protective of my hair length - the thought of chopping off my locks used to give me major anxiety. I'd put off getting a hair cut for a year just because the thought of it was just too stressful. Then I found Allison at Bird's Nest. Now I actually look forward to getting my haircut and get it cut every 10 or so weeks! Allison was so kind the first time I saw her and worked hard to make me feel comfortable in her chair.
