Legacy Post from 2019 Von's off of Whyte is one of the few places in Edmonton that offers a decent oyster selection, so it's definitely worth checking out if you're into oysters. Von's is our go to place for a fantastic meal! We have been going to Vons on white and then here on Jasper many times. I love the freshly shucked oysters. There is many oysters to choose from. The steaks are always cooked to perfection. We tried the black cod last time and wow what a treat! The mood is relaxing at Vons and not over crowded. My go to place for oysters. Vons is a staple for yummy food. I love the steaks but the seafood toppings are what makes the food delicious here! They do this amazing hollandaise sauce with some lobster and its mind blowing delicious. I honestly loved the two appetizers I had here on my last visit. The wagyu beef tartare and bone marrow were divine. They were on par with dishes I've had in Las Vegas. So decadent and mouth watering delicious. They actually were better than the steaks I've had before. My only vice is service is so so here. They serve your food so late here, it takes literally forever, bc they want you to order drinks and more drinks. I've had to ask the waiter on every visit for them to take my order bc they just ignore you for so long before taking food orders after you got your drinks... Another shady thing happened on my last visit. My friend had her bday party here, and she rented the private upstairs room. It was awesome, but she was busy mingling and she didnt est her food. Servers literally took her barely touched 3 lobster tails and threw them away before she had a chance to eat them!!! Seriously, if its sitting there and not eaten. Dont take plates away unless you ask! She was a bday girl and I'm pretty sure the servers ate her food. She was looking forward to taking it home, but the servers insisted it had been thrown away! I continue to come back here for the service and atmosphere! Great staff here. I'm always so happy during my dinner and upon leaving. The food is always fulfilling and delicious. I've never had a bad meal while visiting. Here's to not jinxing myself by saying it out loud. Hahah The oysters will always bring me back. Done as they should be here with variety and specials alike. My steak has always been cooked to perfection whether it's a ribeye or a prime rib cut. I have yet to have the filet here. Drinks are plentiful and mixed or served with flair. Decently priced and wine is pretty standard with price list and selection. Derek and Morgan are always a delight here to have as service staff. But every member of the team I've ever had here has been an exceptional server. Management included. I wanted to check out this place because my friends love it there. We called last minute on a Friday night and got a table for two. We missed the Buck-a-shuck promotion but still ordered all the oysters on their menu. They were amazing! We didn't care for the sources; more limes and valentine sources would have been great. Other than the oysters, we order steak and lobster. The best stake I have had in a while. We got a bottle of wine which complemented our meal nicely. The food was delicious; everything was cooked perfectly! Our server has very friendly and nice! The owner or manager came to our table and chatted with us. The service made us feel like royalty. They were welcoming and super welcoming. It would have been nice to have wipes for the hands or lemon water to wash up, but other then that, we are happy with everything! We will be back for sure. So it's been a minute since I've had oysters and being in land-locked Alberta I would say that's pretty typical here. BUT, if you're like me and missing your yearly trip to the ocean I would highly recommend you head on over to Von's for their Buck-A-Shuck! It's kinda like happy hour but with oysters! We ordered 18 of the Chef's Creek oysters ($1.50 each) and they were by far our favourite ones. We also tried 6 of the Pink Moon oysters ($2.50 each) and 6 of the Shiny Sea oysters ($3.00 each). You have to order in batches of 6 for all the oysters. We also had calamari which the dip was so yummy. The mushrooms Neptune (delicious!) I saved my leftovers from this to eat for breakfast on toast with a fried egg on top! Drooling.... We also ordered the Hoisin Cauliflower which was another delicious dish and a bottle of Prosecco to wash it all down with. Our total bill was just about $160 which is totally worth it for this amazing special food. The ambiance in the lounge was great, our server was so attentive, the manager even came out to greet everyone. The music was some great Latin beats which we definitely enjoyed. It started when we made a reservation, I gave my name of course spelled my last name. I parked the car while my wife went in and gave my name. They claimed we had no reservation and were going to turn us away, but finally sat her when my wife asked if they were busy. At the same time I was still getting text messages from this restaurant that my reservation table was ready. I even recieved a phone call asking if we were coming or canceling, I then told them we were already seated, they then realized they copied my name down incorrectly. the appetizer (Raw Oysters) was perfect but the Filet Mignon was poor almost tough and the Prime rib was Ok but came very cool not hot and 1/3 fat, also I wish it had a starch (potato or rice). While we've had oysters together over the years, our love affair with oysters really blossomed in Luderitz, Namibia, in the "dining room" of the Bay View Hotel, where we shared plate after plate of the fresh local ocean flowers with a team of Peace Corps volunteers one summer afternoon. Since then we've sampled all varieties of oysters as we travel. So it was with some joy that I heard about Von's, the long history it's had in the lives of the Edmontonians I know, and their oyster special. Time and again we've spent an early evening at Von's, downing oysters of all the species on offer, reminiscing of sunsets and seafood gone by. The seafood platter for two is a must. It's $99.00 and has everything. I've also had the Asian inspired cod wrapped in banana leaf with spices (not too spicy). It's good, but did not knock my socks off. The lamb is nicely done as is the shaved beef sandwich. I enjoy the vegetables. They are cooked to perfection. The rice was bland and a bit chewy. You can share the desserts because they are huge. I liked the apple cake with ice cream. Wines start out at $47.00 per bottle. Half price on Mondays. Our eager server was a bit pushy a first until she realized we were going to take our time. Then she paced herself perfectly. I prefer to eat in the lounge. Von's has been around for as long as I can remember, but not the kind of place that I would typically go. When I was planning a dinner for a group of managers after Christmas, I thought I would check them out. The group booking process was smooth. We had looked online at the room options, and loved the look of "The Loft:. There was a $40.00 room fee, which we gladly paid. The room itself was a little disappointing and didn't quite live up to the description on the website, but still very nice. Our final numbers had changed a couple of days before the reservation, so I let the manager know and he said it wouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately, that message didn't seem to get to the staff who were setting it up because we had to add 3 place once we got there. Morgan was our server for our group of 13 and she was really great. The downside to serving a group in the loft is that you have to bring all the food up the stairs. Unfortunately, one missed step meant that a few dishes hit the ground. Morgan was mortified but recovered really quickly and the kitchen was so quick to refire that had we not seen the plates go down, we probably wouldn't have even realized there was an issue. Everyone's food was cooked absolutely perfectly. We all raved about our dishes. Morgan was knowledgeable on the wine list, and the oyster choices which made our experience so much better. read more

Von's is now on Jasper Avenue and the new restaurant is airy and very nice. Service was exceptional! We went for our anniversary and basically had the whole place to ourselves, and it was Happy hour. Excellent choice on my part as we got a discount on the bill and had superb service! My only comment would be that the Lobster tails were bland, but the surf and turf and lobster risotto were excellent. Way more food than we should have eaten. Will return. read more

Really just terrible. When they first opened I loved coming here! But as time went on, service got worse, quality of food was quite horrifying and overall just a disappointment. How can you call yourself an oyster bar when oysters are not great quality on top of not being shucked properly. Feb 13th dinner from Valentine's day menu. Sat us in the ba for our meal at a table beside the hockey game tv , but we asked to be moved to the real dining room please, as we had a reservation for a week ahead of time. They moved us upstairs to a cold room with a portable heater. 3 hours literally from start to finish. Service was bad, no clearing of plates, slow, etc., then one steak was way over cooked, no one inquired if we liked our food, I got a steak but my girlfriend did not get a steak that was edible. They cooked one that was put in a doggie bag though and a 50 dollar gift certificate that I will never back to use . The bad service had a required 18 percent tip. The over priced alcohol plus the 2 one hundred dollar dinners, plus the 18 percent tip, plus gst, came out to 320 dollars for the worst dining experience I've ever had I think. read more

For fine dining this place is a jem. Meeting a friend here for Christmas cheer, we decided on having a nice dinner at a higher scale restaurant. It is beautiful. *(However, being in wheelchair, I could not get up the steep incline to the door outside, and had to have a good nature stranger help me). This is NOT completely wheelchair accessible. Inside it was beautiful and classy. We were placed by the fireside, which gave plenty of character and they had a beautiful huge Christmas tree in the foyer. Our server was friendly, fun, and attentive. I love raw oysters, so the server gave me a few ideas on what to try. My friend went with the steak and shrimp ($45.00) while I went with the special..bison steak with Atlantic crab ($44.00). We also had the feature wine. The oysters were delicious and fresh. I can't remember exactly what I tried, but our server recommended trying Atlantic oysters because they are more in season. They came with seafood sauce, lemon, and horseradish. They were amazing, and I will definitely come here again for those alone. My Bison steak was amazing! It was a large slab of perfectly cooked meat with a generous side of veggies, mushrooms, and potatoes. Perhaps a little too much salt on the meat, but otherwise really good. Also, the complementary bread and whipped butter was delicious and good for soaking up all the flavours of the meal. My friend was happy with her choice, but she agreed that my choice was better. Is it possible to have a positive group dining experience in Edmonton? The last 2 dinners of birthday groups has been absolutely crap. I feel bad for Vons though, a long time favorite just totally lost all its reputation with last weekends dining experience. They had asked us to come in 30 mins early to accommodate with our party size, so 7pm instead of 730pm. Most of us were there at 7 and not one single drink order was taken until about 745. It seemed like the only 2 waiters were concerned with providing a speaker for music. Wtf? Didn't get to put our orders in until 815, and didn't get to see appetizers till about 915. Main courses were a mess as well as half of the table received their meals while their spouses had to see them eat their meals for a good 30 minutes before the other half got theirs. There was also an issue with the plates as well as one of my friends a small plate for a huge main course, he complained about how couldn't cut his steak without everything falling off, and the waitress just fucking laughed. Wtf vons? This was the only time that there were more than 2 ppl helping out party as they needed help bringing out mains. Realistically they needed at least 4 ppl helping us since 7pm. After it was all said and done, we were out of there at 1145 after a huge debacle with all the bills. Poor system and poor service. Another reason for restaurants to say no to large groups if they cannot accommodate for them. Food was mediocre, Vons has lost its lustre for sure. Sal says: Just Skip It (1.9/5) unless you doing buck a shuck then maybe try it Raza says: I paid almost $45 for my meal. I was the last person served around 10:25PM after putting in an order at around 8:30PM. Food arrived on an appetizer sized plate with my meal essentially "stacked" on one another. I'm updating my review a year later to reiterate how amazing this place is! Easily my favourite restaurant in town. The steak is cooked to perfection, the potatoes are soft and buttery, and the vegetables are crisp but cooked at the same time. YUM. I could probably die here. Ordered a bottle of the Artesan Zinfandel that paired really well with our steaks. I definitely recommend ordering this wine! Classy is what I think of when I walk into Von's. It's definitely expensive, so I would say take a date. But make sure that date is classy.( Not a bum like my friend Becky M. ) They bring the oysters with a trio of Tabasco (chipotle, green pepper, regular) shaved horse reddish, cocktail sauce and lemons. To be honest? I just like my raw oysters raw. They are oysteryest tasting that way. They also offer free parking in the parking lot (validated) and coat check. I've been to Von's Steak House many times over the years for special events and private bookings but I've only had the pleasure of ordering off the menu once. I adore their yorkshire puddings with au jus (as that is what I had nearly every time I was there for a work function in the past). Overall their food quality is good and they are quite accommodating. While I was here for a family dinner, the servers were really understanding of the challenges that eating out with a 2 year old posed. The service was wonderful! It is quite certainly priced such that it is only a special treat type restaurant for me, however that's worth having on occasion. I really loved my tomato salad -- it was unlike any other salad I've yet had. The venison carpaccio was also really quite good. I've had my fair share of time spent on Whyte Ave in Edmonton as an young adult and I haven't had the opportunity to dine at Von's. Tonight we finally indulged ourselves and saw how Von's held up as an oyster bar and steakhouse. Environment - Located just off of Whyte ave, the restaurant appeared ordinary from the outside. Once we stepped inside, I knew that they did not skimp out on the interior design and decor. Everything spoke elegance and sophistication. You would not come to this restaurant in sweats. It was nice to know that they offered a private room for my friends and I. Food - It was about 9pm when we ordered and I was famished so I decided to dive right into the main meal. I had the prime rib - Von's cut and sweet potato mash. On presentation, the dish looked appetizing. The Yorkshire pudding gives a nice visual depth to the plate and the color of the steak was just right. However, what draws short of the meal was the flavour. I felt the Yorkshire pudding was tasteless and the sweet mashed potato too sweet. There wasn't anything on the plate to help balance it out. The main player also could not perform well. The prime rib lacked a depth of flavor and the trims were way too salty. The horseradish, however, was a nice touch. There was also a good abundance of fat on the cut, possibly enough to make my own soap (of course an exaggeration but there really was a lot). On a side note, the wine selection was great. Value - the cut I paid was 40 dollars. I thought the portions were good for what you pay for but the flavor was lacking. There are probably better steaks to be had elsewhere at that price. Overall - Von's is a fancier restaurant on Whyte ave that serves decent food. Their steaks are on par with many other steakhouses and there is nothing that really stands out. We came here looking for a good steak and it happened to be the buck a shuck night as well for oysters! We sat down in the lounge which has some good background music playing but it's not overpowering at all. You can still clearly hear the people at your table and have a good conversation without yelling. We ordered a dozen oysters and they were quite good. I'm not a huge oyster fan but these were quite tasty. The steaks we had were amazing. My New York strip was a perfect pink all the way through. Amazing flavour. If you want to go more formal as well they have their dining room that is much more dressy then the lounge side (I was still in a suit jacket but jeans instead of dress pants and a tie) Awesome experience. Von's Steak House is legendary for providing high end quality service in the form of food, service, and ambience for over decades. If you want to take that special someone for that special dining experience, this is the place to take them. The price is on the high end, but it is worth it for the most part. I celebrated my lucky 13th wedding anniversary at this place. The problem was that we are fiercely attached to our 3 year old, so we took him with us. This meant we had to be there super early and leave at a time to make it for his bed time. Although, my little monkey was at his best behaviour charming our server, my experience was somewhat different in contrast to my past experiences. I'm not going to say that it was bad, but it was different. I have learned from experiences that although combo plates seem enticing in that you get the best of both worlds (serf n turf), there always seems to be something lacking in that it seems too good to be true, which in turn takes away from the overall experience. I believe I got sucked into this trap when I ordered the steak and lobster. The lobster tail was succulent and delicious, but because I only got one tail, it was more of a tease. Unfortunately, the steak was a bigger disappointment. To their credit, it was cooked medium rare and presented artfully pre-cut into slices. However, when presented this way, you better deliver on the flavor, which sadly, it did not. For the money I paid, I would have loved a tender and juicy rib-eye beautifully marbled; but instead it might have been sirloin that was solid muscle and under seasoned which was somewhat flavourless and chewy. The bearnaise sauce could not provide much support to help this entree. The potato side was described as 'potato puffs' a croquette like balls of mashed potato infused in cheese, butter, and sautéed onion, which is breaded and deep fried into six balls. Aside from the lobster, this was the pleasant surprise on my entree-a deconstructed mashed potato which made every bite enjoyable. The appetizer of Crab Shack Oysters was tasty, but salty in my wife's opinion. My glass of Malbec was a perfect complement to my dinner. My wife had the lobster and crab which she said was delicious. Overall, the service was excellent and the evening was enjoyable although I had to leave earlier than I wanted given my monkey's sleep schedule. Next time, I will be more singular in my choice of a main course such as a rib-eye, prime rib, or only lobster and I won't be disappointed. read more

Well, well! I've been wanting to go to Von's for some time and needed and excuse to splurge. What better reason than having my crazy in-laws here from Scotland. We booked a table on a Wednesday night and it was quiet so no problem making the reservation. We got a lovely table in the dining room and were greeted by our fabulous server Kevin. Kevin knew his stuff and was very personable. We all liked his conversation, it wasn't forced and he recommended some nice wine for the table. Inside it was nicely decorated and the lighting was romantic, dimly lit but not so dark you can't see what you are eating. I ordered the New York Stripline with garlic mashed red-skinned potatoes and shared a few sides including asparagus tips and shaved parmesan and sautéed mushrooms and onion. The sides were tasty but the main event was epic. Even the mash was exceptional. I should have ordered peppercorn sauce because I love it. But the steak was juicy so I didn't need it. First they did not know how to make a long island ice tea. Ordered appy mushroom neptune it was good. We ordered steak and Alaskan king crab which is in the menu all they had was snow crab and would not lower price. Dinner came not even 5 mins after the appitizer. Hate bering rushed. Ordered steak med rare and it came rare. Veggies where greasy and tasteless. Steak was to be 6 oz lucky if mine was 4-5 oz. Blah no seasoning. Service was not to par which i expected for this place. I had just touched down in Edmonton on an empty stomach. Heard such good things about Alberta beef that trying it was the only thing on my mind. I was staying downtown and did some Yelping and decided on Von's. I like that they had their own private parking (I'm terrible at finding street parking/parallel parking). I sat at the bar watching the Jays game - they weren't playing it when I arrived, but were glad to change one of the two TVs for me. I was pleased to find out they had buck-a-shuck, but the downside was that you could only it order by the half/full dozen, and you were only eligible if you ordered a drink (can be non-alcoholic). Since I went in wanting steak, I knew I wouldn't have room for anything else. I ordered the ribeye steak (14 oz) medium rare, with a side of caesar salad. My dish also came with a small side of bone marrow, which was such a nice surprise. Also, I was brought fresh bread accompanied by an absolutely delicious garlic butter. I originally declined the bread but I'm so glad I didn't (even ended up getting more bread...). Anyway, onto the steak. One of the better steaks I've had. Very tender meat, perhaps a little bit too fatty for some, though I didn't mind it too much. I would've appreciated a touch more salt to bring out its flavour, but maybe less sodium is a good thing so you can really taste the quality of the meat. Also, as mentioned, was really pleased to find that there was some bone marrow.. it's not everyday you get that on the side! My side salad was also not bad. Not heavily dressed and the bacon bits were very interesting; it wasn't the typical kind of bacon - had a nice twist and taste to it. Now 14 oz is a lot of meat so I couldn't finish it and unfortunately couldn't make room for dessert. The bartender brought out a plate with 4 of the featured desserts, which I think was a brilliant way of showing it instead of representing it on a menu - very clever! Food and atmosphere was nice, but might be slightly on the pricier side for some folks. I hear they do half priced appetizers though whenever the oilers play! My husband and I used to LOVE Von's, it was amazing steak and the seafood tasted amazing. We went tonight for my birthday, I got the crab legs which was my go to meal, this time the crab tasted like it had been frozen, so basically it was the same as what you'd get at red lobster but double the price. Hubby got a steak which he always gets. The meat was tough and no flavor. Von's was our favourite place as it gave us both what we wanted... but I don't know if there was a change in ownership, the service was slow; the manager did apologize and took my husbands meal off the bill. We came as a group. Service was friendly, but. It Took a while to get your first drinks . The steaks were tender, but they need a hotter grill, as there were no real char marks on the steaks,so flavour was not as deep as it could have been especially for the price paid. It's been a while since I wanted to visit Von's but I just didn't have the perfect excuse. Finally I got one! Birthday surprise dinner! I booked our table trough open table and everything went as planned. I got a phone call the day before to confirm the reservation and to ultimate details. We got a nice table for two, close to the fireplace, lighted by a niche alcohol candle and a perfect set up. We started with 8oz of red wine, Catena from Mendoza, followed by three bacon wrapped scallops with a wasabi-spiked cocktail sauce, not too spicy not too mild. We ordered a Prime Rib (17 hours to be ready as per the server) with red-skinned mashed potatoes and a New York Striploin with fries and we decide to share a side of asparagus. Both plates were delicious, every bite was perfectly cooked. As I requested on the reservation, the server came with an slice of cake and a nice sparkler birthday candles decorated by strawberry syrup. Before leaving we walked through the launch just to check it and looks like its a nice as well. Oysters specials are Mon - Fri 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm & all night on Sundays at the lounge. Half price bottle of wine on Mondays; great way to start the week for sure! We will come back to try the Oysters for sure and enjoy the lounge area and a good Caesar with them! read more

The only good thing about this place were the starters and the customer service. The lobster was undercooked. It was gross. They gave us a new one and it was just as awful. They also don't know how to cook a steak as directed. It's really a shame because it's a beautiful restaurant, but the food is not that great considering the price you're paying. read more

The best meal and service I've had in a long time. Mushrooms Neptune Bake for the appetizer, steak and lobster for the entree and creme brule for dessert. Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection (beautiful rare steak), but the star of the show was definitely the creme brule. Lightly torched until the top was a perfect pane of sugar glass. So good. Can't say enough about the service. Friendly, first class and patient with the patrons. Parking is free in the lot beside the restaurant. Just give your licence plate number to the hostess before you are seated. If you are spending time in Whyte Ave, it is a great place to enjoy a fine meal. read more

Wonderful dinner! I made a reservation for our anniversary. we were seated next to the fireplace. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Mussels were excellent! our meal came in a timely manner, nice and hot. As we were finishing our drinks, we were surprised with a piece of cake, wishing us a Happy Anniversary. Such a nice gesture. For the past four or so years, Von's has been one of my favorites in Edmonton - bar none. However, an experience this evening has soured my palate, so to speak. We reserved a table for my sister's birthday nearly a week prior to dining, but a few hours before our reservation, we received a call from Von's asking us how long we planned on being there - they wanted a definite time, in hours. Now, I'm not sure how most people dine, but with our group, we like to take our time, especially when we're at a place that purports to be a little nicer, like Von's. To ask patrons to plan out how long their dinner is going to take is analogous to asking us to forego spontaneity for the evening. However, we were willing to give the restaurant the benefit-of-the-doubt, and chalk up the call to an overzealous host, not something that was indicative of Von's actual policy. Dinner was fairly good, barring a few issues - which were rectified immediately - and the evening proceeded nicely, albeit slowly (the kitchen seemed a little backed up). We were more than happy with this, as I stated earlier, we enjoy a slower pace to our dinners. Everything was fine, proceeding through dinner, but not two minutes after we had paid our nearly $600 bill for eight people, one of the purported owners came to our table and asked if we were nearly done, as another group had been waiting for almost fourty-five minutes for our table. This was two minutes after we received our bill! I confronted him on this, and said that rushing customers out of a restaurant was terrible customer service. He responded by saying: "I'm sorry you're having a bad day." Seriously? He then proceeded to tell our group: "he had a business to run." Well, unfortunately for him (and Von's), the restaurant business is largely one of dealing with people - and giving people the impression that they're not welcome, and need to leave immediately after they're done eating is lousy customer service. As I left, I mentioned that we will not be back, and that we will be posting a review regarding this experience to which he retorted: "whatever helps you sleep at night." Wow. What a way to treat loyal customers. Part of my frustration is that I've said nothing but positive things about Von's for the past four years (going out of my way to recommend it to friends and colleagues), and this experience has left me feeling betrayed. The food is good, but it's good (better?) elsewhere, too - there are plenty of top-quality restaurants in Edmonton where one can feel free to linger without being rushed out by management. read more
