An Unexpected Downtown Vancouver Gem…read more Jordan and I stumbled across Full Heart Irish Bar last week while walking through downtown Vancouver, and it ended up being one of those places you're genuinely happy you found. From the outside, it's small and pretty unassuming. You see the tables out front and could easily assume it's just another little neighborhood bar. But once you walk through the door, the entire atmosphere changes. It opens into this cozy, beautifully decorated old-world Irish/Celtic pub with warm lighting, great character, and an impressive wall of whiskeys behind the bar. It's intimate without feeling cramped, and considering the place is only about a year old, it already has the personality and charm of somewhere that's been part of downtown for years. A big part of what made our first visit so enjoyable was our bartender, Spencer. He was welcoming from the moment we walked in, extremely knowledgeable about whiskey, and clearly enjoys what he does. He's great at making recommendations and explaining different spirits without ever making it feel overly complicated or pretentious. What also impressed me was realizing that Spencer wasn't just behind the bar -- he was also handling the food. As someone who works in the service industry myself, I appreciate how difficult it is to balance making cocktails, taking care of a full bar, keeping up with guests, and preparing food at the same time. He handled it all very well. I came back again last night and happened to walk into trivia night, which I hadn't planned on. The place was busy, I ended up winning trivia, met some new people, and had another really fun night. Even with a packed room, the service stayed consistent and the atmosphere was upbeat and welcoming. That's probably the biggest compliment I can give Full Heart: after one visit, Jordan and I already knew we'd be back. It's small, comfortable, unique, and has the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to settle in for a while instead of having one drink and leaving. Between the whiskey selection, the décor, the cocktails, the food, and genuinely good hospitality, Full Heart has quickly become one of my favorite little discoveries in downtown Vancouver. Definitely worth walking through that unassuming front door. To the owners: you have something special here, and you have one hell of a bartender representing it. People like Spencer are the reason first-time customers become regulars.

He felt they needed more seasoning-they were a little tasteless. He dumped the tiny little cup of salsa on top and asked for more, but he was still disappointed. The fish wasn't salted properly. They also came with "house made" tortilla chips. These were hard and cardboard-like. That's too bad because it's not difficult to cut tortillas and fry them up. I do it at home sometimes. They turn out great. So maybe go to a good Mexican restaurant if you have your heart set on quality tortilla chips. If you want fish & chips though, come here instead of their neighbor to the east (not mentioning any names-you know what it's called). The portions were generous-as they should be for $30. That's the only downside. A little pricey. We shared 2 silk pie slices for dessert. Very dense and dark chocolatey. Good to share-a whole piece is too rich-and I like rich! If not for the fish tacos I would give Waterfront Taphouse 5 stars.
