Do not use this company. They canceled on me at 4:30 p.m. on the day they were supposed to repair my roof vent "in the afternoon" and it took four phone calls with 3 different employees to find out what was going on. Then they withheld my refund for two weeks when I told them I didn't want to continue working with such a disorganized company, and kept trying to offer a minimal discount to set up another date. It was bordering on harassment. The owner called me and offered me extra refund money not to post my opinion, which I declined, because this was a disaster. The front office doesn't seem to know what the technicians are doing/saying and vice versa. On the initial inspection date, Their technician arrived 45 minutes late outside a 4 hour window for the initial inspection, then sat in the truck for 40 minutes preparing my estimate, wasting my day from noon to 6 p.m. There was no document to sign when I made my deposit, which I should have declined to do in the first place, but be warned that they do not keep a document/paper trail. We've used Sixpenny Chimney for the past two years. Our first experience was fine, but this year was extremely disappointing and concerning. The technician arrived late, which disrupted our schedule, and during the cleaning he reported that our chimney flue was bent and unsafe to use. He then quoted us $30,000 for repairs. What makes this situation troubling is that: Both years we paid for the same Level 1 cleaning and inspection, yet last year's technician reported no issues. The recent photo showed a fresh bend in the flue with no soot behind the damage, which strongly suggests it occurred during the cleaning itself. A third-party opinion confirmed that the damage was likely caused by force during the service. When we questioned why there were photos this year but not last year, the manager told us it was because we purchased a "different level of cleaning." This was simply false--both inspection reports clearly state Level 1. It felt like we were being gaslit rather than given an honest explanation. Because Sixpenny is the only chimney company we've ever used, the responsibility clearly falls on them--whether last year's inspection was incomplete or this year's service caused the damage. We trusted Sixpenny because of their long history in business, but what we experienced was a lack of professionalism, accountability, and transparency. Instead of solutions, we were met with stress, excuses, and an outrageous repair quote. I had scheduled a wood stove cleaning. The technician came look at our wood stove with a flash light and said "you can clean this with a shop vac". It definitely seemed like he did not want to actually do the work. Then told me to call the office because they'd need payment. For what?? He didn't do anything. Cost me $126 for their "trip fee". I received quotes from two companies after they did an inspection on my chimney. One was Chimney Doctor of Northern Virginia, a very highly rated firm by Consumer Checkbook that I have used before, and one was Sixpenny, selected by the property manager. Sixpenny said "We would like to attempt to straighten the warped metal [pipe inside the chimney] and replace the wood as well as the chase cover on top. A complete prefab chimney replacement would cost $25K-$30K and you might lose the double-sided fireplace you currently have however, we are offering the following: Attempt to straighten 2 warped and dented liners: $2,880 Chase cover: $1,850 Replace rotted wood: $3,600 Chimney Doctor said no respectable firm would offer to simply bend the warped metal. Their quote was for approx $8,000 to replace the pipe, not the "$25K-$30K" that Sixpenny claimed, with Sixpenny's added warning that I could lose the double-sided fireplace! Chimney Doctor quoted a Chase cover at $1,150, vice Sixpenny's $1,850 Chimney Doctor quoted $880 to replace and paint the trim, vice $3,600! What an amazing difference between Sixpenny, which has lots of 1 star ratings here, and the highly rated Chimney Doctor of Northern Virginia. read more

The tech came today and did a great job. He explained everything that he was doing. The dryer vent definitely needed to be cleaned. He went into the attic to check the air vent as required. There was a "turn" in the air vent area near the dryer and he made sure to correct that and installed new pipe-(I forget the name of this product.) I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 because they did not show up yesterday during the 4 hour window, because they went long on their job prior to mine and had to reschedule to today. They did call to explain and accommodate my schedule today. The scheduler was friendly and informative. The tech was friendly and knowledgeable. The tech did a thorough job. They repaired our chimney which required replacement of dozens of spalling bricks, a cracked chimney crown and grinding out and re-filling brick mortar joints. The job took two full days to complete. The three-man crew were prompt, efficient and polite. Our repaired chimney looks great. They did an excellent job and at a fair price. This company is dishonest and I will never do business with them again. READ: BAIT AND SWITCH! I was selling my house recently and agreed to certain repairs for my buyer, one of which was the chimney damper. I made the mistake of allowing the buyer's agent to recommend this company. I will never make that mistake again if I ever need to sell another property - always find your own company and don't trust anyone on the other side of the transaction! Weeks ago, I had this company come out and tell me that my damper already worked properly and there was nothing that needed to be done. They quoted me prices for a smaller damper ($175) and a lock top damper ($600+), stating these were OPTIONAL upgrades. I asked for an invoice and they gave me an invoice with the price list and the fact that they flipped the damper to the correct position. The day before settlement on my house, the buyer's agent suddenly told us that she would not accept that invoice and that the $175 work needed to be done (not what we agreed to at all, but it was the day before settlement and she had us cornered. We had a house to buy on the same day and needed the sale to go through to make that happen). I called Sixpenny Chimney Sweeps and paid them the $175 I was originally quoted. I did not have time at that point to hunt down another company. Sixpenny came out that day and claimed that they were going to try to cut the damper, but that if it didn't work they would have to install a lock top damper. Suddenly they decided (after inspecting it weeks ago and never mentioning this) that it was an antique damper and could not simply be replaced. My husband called the owner of the company, who assured him that whatever happened, we would only have to pay the $175. We scheduled another appointment the next day for the work (the day of settlement). The next morning, we received a call from Sixpenny stating that they needed to put in a lock top damper and it would cost $375. The owner claimed that was the "lowest possible price [he] could charge without making any money". I don't know what could have possibly changed from the time they came out and the next morning, but suddenly cutting the damper was no longer an option, and the owner's promise to charge us $175 was now going to be broken. I was furious, but I paid them the extra $200 and had them install the lock top damper so I could sell my house. I didn't have a choice because it was settlement day, and Sixpenny knew that because they were communicating with the buyer's agent. Any company that takes advantage of someone like this should never be trusted. It was pretty clear that they were just trying to get as much money out of us as possible by forcing our hand at the last minute (knowing that we could lose the sale of our house if we did not replace the damper the way the agent wanted). They should have been honest and quoted the higher price in the first place. Instead they took our money and held it hostage until we gave them more money for an unnecessary service. When our technician came to your home, he notified you that the chimney was already clean and did not need to be swept. Therefore, we only performed an inspection which is why we dropped the price from $125 to $85. " That is a complete mischaracterization of what happened. I paid in full on Amazon for an inspection and cleaning two weeks before your technician arrived. Your technician did not perform the cleaning part of the job. When I asked about the cleaning, he said he was only there for an inspection. Even after I told him I had paid for both on Amazon, he did not call back to the office to check, he did not review his work order, he just said he was there to do an inspection and left. In your email to me, you stated that your technician misread his route and did not know he was supposed to clean my chimney. These are your exact words: "After speaking with our technician, he says that he misread his route and thought it was solely a chimney inspection." The price was only dropped to $85 after I complained to Amazon after the fact. They then contacted your office, after which the price was reduced. If I had not contacted Amazon, I would have been charged the entire $125. This is incompetence at best; straight up dishonesty at worst. Your characterization of the events makes it sound like you proactively reduced the price based on the assessment. I want to be clear that this is not what occurred. I already paid the full amount to Amazon and you walked away from the job without completing half of it without further communication. I was only able to recover some amount after contacting Amazon. You said you were available to come back and clean it but why would I want to pay more for your services after this experience? The only communications I received from you is a single -- one -- response to my email, which basically said what I wrote here. And I doubt I would have gotten that without getting Amazon involved. Sixpenny cleaned a dryer vent and installed a bird guard at a rental condo for me. A few months later, the HOA claimed that the bird guard was not in place and cited me for a violation. Sixpenny re-visited the site in a timely manner, determined that the missing bird guard was not mine, and re-installed the bird guard to the correct unit, all at no charge to me. They even went he extra mile and sent me a photo to provide to my HOA that I was never in violation. The original service was done quickly and efficiently with little disruption to the tenant and the price was extremely reasonable. They only cleaned the outside vent and didn't touch the inside part where the machine connects in the home as most places do. Called for an estimate to remove a wood stove insert. Was happy that a technician was available the same day. Setup to have them come by, they take a look inside the house and then, in order to provide an accurate estimate, they have to climb up and look down the chimney to see if there was an existing liner. Well, I guess that's when this visit to provide an estimate suddenly becomes a visit to provide an "inspection". So they come back in and charge $150.00 to provide me with estimate for over $3,000.00 of additional work. The office said nothing about a fee when I scheduled, and then when I called to question the charge, Carol tried to gaslight me into believing I should have known "because it's our busiest time of the year", "and that's our absolute minimum fee", and "that when we have to look at the flue liner it becomes a safety issue". Well, you might have mentioned some of that when I scheduled. Techs did a good job providing me with available options. Also, if you care about your credit card security, they are still writing down credit card numbers on invoices and running them at the office. Not very secure... read more

had 3 chimneys relined with stainless steel liner (2 regular chimneys and 1 boiler chimney). I had lots of other stuff thrown in with the job (at request of six penny). Cleaning 2 fireplaces at $145 each. Repoint fireboxes at $200 each. Seal openings at smoke chambers $375 each. 3 chimney caps at $125 each. Also, a chimney crown for one chimney was replaced but no price is listed specifically in the quote (this is for the chimney I mention below). Not even 3 years later, out of the blue the damper cord snapped. We only used our fireplace once in 3 years. I heard a thunk only to see the cord at the bottom of the firplace and the damper unable to close. I called six penny and they sent somebody out for free to fix within a day. Very happy. They said they had no idea why it snapped as this was not common. Note, the next time I was on the roof cleaning my gutters, extra/old cord, from the damper, was left on my roof. The guy didn't take it with him??No biggie, I threw it away. A few months later, that same chimney (where the damper cord broke) is having a ton of water come in every time it rains. Only started after the damper cord was replaced. Could be a total coincidence??? I'm having another chimney company and six penny ($85 charge, which I understand) come out to see what is going on with the chimney,,, hopefully I get the same diagnosis from both! review to be updated soon with what each company said and prices. read more

Tech arrived more than an hour after the three-hour window they had scheduled; no call from the office to note or apologize for the inconvenience (and no answer when I called several times seeking an update; only leaving a message saying I may need to find another company prompted them to have the tech call me to let me know he was on his way). Tech was courteous, pleasant, efficient, and made sure to leave no mess, quickly cleaning the fireplace and the dryer vent; 'inspection' of the state of the fireplace and chimney was cursory. If I could write a review that literaly glowed I would. I was told by a heating company that is not affiliated with Sixpenny that my furnace would not work because the flue pipe was blocked and that my furnace would not work or work safetly unless I had it cleaned. I spoke with Carol and she was extremely helpful and squeezed me into the schedule. David from Sixpenny was the tech. He climbed up on our roof and inspected the pipe and made sure the cap was secure and cleaned the flue. He told me he did not find anything that would have caused the heater to malfunction. He worked with me to see if the heater could be turned back on and after several tries it worked. He tested it again. The igniter would not consistantly work but he did get it working. He reccomended a heating company look at the heater to see what was causing the igniter to not fire consistantly. Many companies I spoke with were too booked to help me. I had not had heat for two days and was so happy they could help me. read more

Our regular chimney sweep company does not do repairs and rebuilds of leaky damaged brick, mortar and spalling and I researched to find a chimney company who could also repair and diagnose leaks. Sixpenny was easy to deal with, took photos of the damage to show me and suggested a solution for about $1,000, including replacing 11 disintegrated bricks, caulking and all new flashing. The other company proposed a $6,000 chimney rebuild. The scheduling was easy and the workers arrived on time. And the leak has stopped. I am very pleased and I highly recommend Sixpenny. read more

My home has a pellet electric stove inserted into the fireplace. I was using it the other week and had a fair bit of smoke come into the main floor....not good. I searched around for chimney cleaning and fireplace repair services. I called a few places but no one seemed to deal with pellet stoves. I thought I was at a dead end until I found Sixpenny Chimney Sweeps. I explained my problem and Denny was here a few days later. He showed me what areas to clean regularly (pellets leave a lot of ash behind) and did a full cleaning of the pipe that runs up the chimney. It was a bit of a shock to see just how much built up ash was in the stove, behind the stove in the fireplace and up the pipe. He suggested this should become more of a regular cleaning (been here 2.5 years and never done it and don't know when the previous owners did it last). I will stay on top with regular cleanings and absolutely be calling again next fall for a routine cleaning. I can't say enough good things about Sixpenny. I spoke with the owner over the phone. He was easy to work with to confirm the flat rate price for Angie's List customers and time for gutter cleaning but his scheduler is a nightmare to work with. First appt scheduled with the owner Franco didn't work out due to weather but at least the staff David showed up and explained to me why he couldn't do the work that day, which I have no problem with. The follow on reschedules I had to work with Carol, the main scheduler. She said they would try to schedule for certain day but never follows up to confirm yes or no. We waited all day for nothing. 3 times she said they would call me back and they never did. Last conversation I had with Carol was very unpleasant. she said the owner's flat rate quote was not good bc they think my house is bigger than I portraited and wanted to charge me more. I gave them the exact square footage of the house and number of the stories above and below the grade and I am lying? Their price is not any cheaper than my other go to gutter cleaner. I didn't want to wait another month so I wanted to give this company a try. I spent over an hours on the phone with them last week. Nothing got accomplished. I've used them for several years now, and have no complaints. As a renter, I had them out twice to sweep our chimney. As a homeowner, they've been out to sweep the chimney and clean gutters. The home i own was a foreclosure that had been neglected for a decade. They found issues that needed to be fixed to prevent damage to the home. When I called to talk with the office staff, I was a little concerned because I thought I was getting railroaded. However, Franco (the owner, I believe) came out THAT DAY to do an emergency repair/sorry term solution, and explained in detail what the issues were that the worker had found. The gutter cleaning was excrptionally helpful as I was in a bind and needed it done immediately to satisfy a requirement in my lease. Mathian (sorry, I'm sure I misspelled it) was VERY helpful on the phone. He scheduled the gutter cleaning for that afternoon, and provided me a receipt via email to satisfy the check-out requirement in my lease (needed minutes later). Bottom line is Mathian is far more helpful than most in this business, and goes out of his way to take care of customers. The techs have always been courteous, clean, and professional. This is the second time we have used them. The first time, 2 years ago was definitely 5 star performance by a single technician. November 2016 we had two technicians arrive. They didn't seem well coordinated in the work. Issues noted: They didn't refasten all the registers when completed; They had turned off the electronic air cleaner and UV light and forgot to turn them back on; Their cleaning of the dryer vent was a disaster blowing all the lint back into the laundry room instead of outside. The service received today was excellent! I sent an email request last night because we had birds in two exhaust vents that went rampant over the weekend. They replied first thing this morning and had a tech out to do the job this afternoon. He was very friendly and helpful to explain the process and risks of the birds, what it could have evolved to and so on.
