Contract turned out to be different than phone discussion - they were supposed to fix mortar to roofline but turns out they used a roofline only 9 rows down, and so now my chimney has mortar repair only 1/3 of the way down! Also, crew came to my house to finish mortar work, didn't actually do ANYTHING, and I had to send camera images to prove it. I called for a 2nd opinion on a chimney liner. They came and went on the roof took a pic of the cap and another guy just standing outside the fireplace. No pics of the inside with a camera and gave me an estimate. When I asked for pics they said I didn't ask for a level 2 inspection just an estimate for a liner. Requested a quote from the Chimney Doctor for repairing our chimney. The stucco on our chimney began to fall off and the underlying bricks were spalling and chunks falling off as well. The Chimney Doctor was one of 4 companies that we asked to provide a quote. Their quote was by far the lowest of all 4. Aside from the lower quote, the tech they sent out to look at our chimney was very knowledgeable and thoroughly explained what he was seeing. The estimate received from them was detailed and easy to understand. They performed the work over 3 days. They cleaned up their area every day before they left. If I had any questions about the work, I would email Amanda, the assistant manager, and she responded quickly and completely answered any questions. I was very happy with the whole process. I am so glad I called Chimney Doctor for a second estimate after the chimney sweeper that I had been using for the last 8-years gave me a suspiciously high estimate to replace the cracked crowns on my two chimneys. I had noticed a "smokiness" in the house (old house) after the last fire I had... They came out, did a thorough inspection, figured out that the "spring" wasn't closing properly in the flue's -and applied WD40. Everything else checked out safely. No charge! I was flabbergasted. Victor and his crew are amazing! I needed to have my chimney relined; when they got out here, they found significant other issues that were causing safety hazards. They fixed and shored up everything, while sticking to the original estimate, and explained what they were doing (and why) every step of the way. They were prompt, responsive, and took a lot of care to make sure my house stayed clean throughout it all. They went above and beyond to do little things like paint the firebox black so that it looks brand new, and install the new fireplace doors I had purchased. But the best part is that I found the new damper very hard to open and close. I called the office to see if there was some trick to it. I spent way too many years living in my house without being able to use my fireplace. When I first moved in I was told by the VA house inspector not to use the fireplace until I had the chimney relined but I did not have the money to get it fixed up. Over the years the weather took its toll on the outside of my chimney. I finally decided to have it fixed before it became too much of a problem. I called many chimney companies in the area and no one wanted to come out and take a look at my chimney. One company finally came out, I paid for their inspection and the two guys told me that there was nothing wrong with the chimney, even though my house inspector showed me all the cracks in the flue. I finally heard about the Chimney Doctor and it turned out that they were right down the street from me. One of the guys came over, we got up on the roof, he pointed out all the issues (the same ones my house inspector had shown me and more) and gave me a fair quote. Do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere - Never have I dealt with such rude and unprofessional people. I called last week to schedule an appointment and the lady gave me three available dates, but I had to confirm with my tenant to figure out which date he would be available. After calling again this morning, the lady told me the date my tenant had chosen was actually taken already, so I had to call my tenant again to figure out another available date. After hanging up with the tenant, I later on tried to call the Chimney Doctor again in the afternoon because I didn't want the second date to be taken either. After calling several times (I couldn't leave a voicemail because the line kept ringing instead of going to voicemail every time), the lady finally picked up and immediately told me to "go somewhere else because you already called too many times". Excuse me? The only reason why I called several times was because 1) I didn't want the second date to get taken, 2) I didn't have the option of leaving a voicemail, and 3) I thought there was something wrong with their phone line because it was nonstop ringing until I hung up each time, therefore I thought I should keep trying until it went through. There was absolutely no need to be so rude and disrespectful, especially to a potential customer that was ready to make an appointment, and I would never recommend this place to any of my friends or family. My chimney developed a leak. Chimney Doctor came out and recommended a new chimney cap. Seemed like a good fix until we noticed a worse leak. Chimney Doctor came out and said that our chimney siding didn't go up far enough. Since the siding was an existing condition of the house, my contention was that the cap should have been constructed to fit the existing chimney to prevent leaks. So unprofessional! I received a quote to have 17 bricks replaced on the exterior of my chimney, and on the morning of the appointment they called to say "something" was left off the quote. The quote clearly states the crown repair is included, but magically the morning of the job, it will now cost nearly 50% more, to replace the crown (cement at top of the chimney). I contacted The Chimney Doctor to come out and inspect my non-functional fireplace. I was told that there would be a fee for the inspection that would be waived if I went ahead with recommended repairs. The technician who came to the house was very professional. He was not able to finish the inspection because he had to get a taller ladder to see the top of the chimney. Because he didn't finish the inspection, I was told not to pay the inspection fee at that time. I waited for the inspection to be completed and get a final estimate for the repair to see if I would go forward with the work. Prior to receiving the final estimate, the office manager began harassing me by calling and emailing me. She treated me as if I was not going to pay the inspection fee and was very unprofessional towards me. She completely ignored the facts of what happened. She actually threatened to send a workman over to my home to collect the check. Unfortunately, while I can't attest to the workmanship of The Chimney Doctor, I can speak to the attitude and lack of customer service on the part of the office manager. As a result of my interactions with her, I will not be doing business with The Chimney Doctor. read more

Here are the facts. Price-wise, I can't complain. Workmanship wise, I can. I think the crew I had was low-skilled. The office manager is someone who grated on my nerves and I'm sure I grated on hers. They overbooked jobs so that my job took numerous visits over a month's time. I don't think there's a customer out there that would be happy about that. And I suspect that time crunch caused workmanship to suffer. Overall, average masonry skills. Average work on rebuilding a crown that needed a redo that wasn't much better. They shaped the concrete by hand, and not very uniform. They cracked (and replaced --good) a clay flue pipe. But how or who can achieve a nice, uniform, and symmetrical crown by hand? Why not use a wooden form and pour concrete in it like I see in home remodeling books? You can even buy preformed crowns and mortar them on. Their excuse was that it creates a crown that's too heavy and it can crack the brick underneath. Say what? Does using a form necessarily force overdoing the amount of concrete? That makes zero sense. Then make a smaller form! So anyway, when grinding out the old mortar to replace with new mortar, they let the grinder slip too much and ground grooves into some bricks. Ok, they did a really great job matching the color of mortar, but used too much in some gaps/grooves and too much wiped and splattered on the bricks. Ok, so they're not professional masons. It's just that I'm the type of person who delivers my best effort regardless of the amount I'm being paid, because you never know who that customer knows, and they all talk. read more

The Chimney Doctor was doing work at a neighbors house and our chimney/fireplace has been leaking water during really bad storms. We asked them to stop by when they finished working at the neighbors. They inspected the chimney and gave us a very reasonable quote on the spot. Two days later the work was done - they replaced the crown and fixed the mortar where needed. This company gets 0 stars!! (if only I could have posted this without any stars!...unfortunately, I had to click on one to post, but it should be 0!) I signed up to have them reline our chimney and then discovered another company that friends had used and been very happy with, so canceled chimney doctor, only to be informed that I wouldn't be receiving a full credit of my deposit as there was a 'restocking fee'...which I was NEVER informed of when I originally agreed for them to do the work. In talking with the office manager, who was unrelenting, I got nowhere. She did say that perhaps they should discuss this at a meeting in the new year, to make sure people are informed of this. ( that speaks volumes, I think!). I wouldn't be annoyed if they had told me, but I also wouldn't have signed up with them at that time, knowing that. There is a reason the other company I have chosen got glowing personal recommendations...Chimney Doctor was found through general research, but I didn't know anyone who had used them. This practice is dishonest and bad business. If you don't have anything in writing and this 'restocking fee' is NEVER disclosed, I simply don't understand how the office manager can justify this practice....at the end of a unsatisfactory conversation, I agreed to disagree, but I still want my $305 back! read more

If I could give this company 10 stars, I would. First -- several years ago, they gave me a quote on a new chase cap. At the time, we couldn't afford it, so we didn't have the work done. This November, I went back to them and, surprisingly, they honored the quote that was years old....for which I was very grateful! I also had them replace the rear and bottom panels of my pre-fab fireplace. Robert did all the work and did a FANTASTIC job. I think my house was cleaner AFTER he left than before. He also gave me some ideas on how I could make the fireplace more aesthetically pleasing if I wanted to. The difference in how the fireplace burns is amazing -- so much cleaner and more efficient. I was very impressed with The Chimney Doctor from the moment they returned my email request for an estimate. They called back almost immediately to set the estimate day and time. Our chimney was damaged in the earthquake a number of years ago so required multiple courses of new brickwork plus a new liner in one of the fireplaces. I had contacted the company before the Coronavirus hit and we had to delay the work until we understood the impact on our own lives. The representative from The Chimney Doctor understood and called back a few times. When we were finally ready, we were scheduled quickly. The masons were very good, clearly accomplished in bricklaying and going up and down scaffolding. The first color brick picked did not match, but they were able to get three more for our review. The fireplace technicians also did a great job, having the knock out the inner brick lining of one of our fireplaces and add a new lining -- a very messy job, but they covered all the furniture and carpet. We were selling our house and Chimney Doctor was hired by a prospective buyer to inspect our four chimneys and fireplaces. They stated that all our fireplaces were unsafe, that we had "effervescence" (water damage) in our chimney, that one chimney cap needed replacing and that we needed to rebuild our chimney brick by brick. The estimated cost: $ 34,000. Not trusting this report, we brought out another chimney company to clean our chimneys and inspect. This company told us that only one of our chimneys even needed cleaning, that there was no effervescence and that no structural repairs were necessary. The chimney cap was fine. One of the springs had gotten caught in the mechanism and it was a 30 second fix. Their bill? $476. Beware Chimney Doctor! They don't deserve the one star I have given them. read more
