    Complementary cheesy bread
    Alyssa M.

My husband and I were heading towards the Burgerville, when he saw Sizzler and was excited to relive some childhood experiences that took place probably 40 years ago. Unfortunately, he was disappointed, as the Malibu chicken, which he loved as a youth, apparently had not kept up with his taste as an adult. I had an unlimited salad bar, which was not bad but nothing super special either. It wasn't hard to find things that were probably gluten-free. The service was friendly. One thing we weren't expecting was that you basically order the food as soon as you walk in, and then they bring it to you at your table. If you want to tip in cash, you can put it on your credit card and then they will hand you the cash to leave on your table. A number of loud and disjointed conversations, and a young person who felt compelled to stand next to the salad bar, dancing for an extended period of time, added to the surreal experience.

Sizzler review 3 stars Been many years since last time at a Sizzler. Some good aspects, but I'm disappointed. Wilted lettuce. Cheese bread is very good but greasy. Chicken wings are very good, the most popular item on the salad bar. Have real bacon bits. Salad items in the photo were what was expected for taste, good. Fake crab salad was good. Soups were chicken noodle and clam chowder. My favorite thing is to add real bacon crumbles to clam chowder. Cantaloupe is sweet. Missed on the honeydew. Black coffee is good. Sugar options are standard white, pink, and yellow. French fries have the same seasoning as the chicken wings and are crispy when hot. Gone is the self-serve ice cream, and now it has ice cream cups and a few topping options. The establishment is clean. Service was excellent. Lots of people are in the restaurant. For an entree and side salad bar, sadly, it is not worth it despite key items tasting good.

Sizzler was my favorite as so I absolutely had to stop when we passed this one on the way home from a road trip! Firstly, the front hostess was SO kind to everyone in the line including myself. Secondly, you could tell the waitress taking care of us was a well-experienced server; she was so attentive and sweet even though we only ordered the salad bar lol. She noticed we were charged for cheese toast when we shouldn't have been and refunded us immediately, and then brought us a ton of extra yummy cheese toast. The salad bar was exactly as I remembered and we enjoyed it thoroughly! The ice cream consistency was perfectly nostalgic too. From the sweet waitress and hostess, to the manager dropping by, seeing the quality check happening at the salad bar, and eavesdropping around me, I could tell the employees care a lot about this restaurant and the customers who eat here regularly. It was really wholesome and I had an incredible experience.

Post covid The service was pretty good, the food potions shrunk in size as you can see from my Malibu chicken that I hadn't touched yet, and was barely bigger than the souffle cup. No labels on the salad bar like it used to. Was so looking forward to eating here and was disappointed

I, myself, am not a seafood eater and so this is a third-hand account of the food here. My partner goes all out and gets a massive plate of food. I believe her go to dish is the "When Larry Met Shrimpy," which comes with lobster and shrimp, in a sea of potatoes, corn, and sausage. She always gets so happy when she starts eating, and I love watching her enjoy herself. Every single time she eats here, she is always happy and always satisfied. When I look at what she gets, it's just a massive amount of food. She's a small person, but she really rips through the entire thing. Often times she moans about how she can't finish what's left, but almost invariably she does. I know she enjoys the whole thing...sausage and potatoes aren't just filler for her, they're an integral part of the boil. Recently, our son (10 y/o) has decided he wants to explore the seafood world. He's been somewhat denied, as I dislike seafood myself. Now my partner is gladly willing to have him try new things, as she'll finish it herself if it's gluten free. The first time we came here, he got a simple lobster tail by itself. He enjoyed it, but said that he didn't like the garlic-parmesan sauce that came with it. He still ate most of the whole thing. The last time he went with my partner, he got a "Larry," a boil with a single lobster tail. This time he went with the honey garlic sauce, which he said he enjoyed a lot more. He didn't eat all of the lobster, but my partner thinks that's because he's still figuring out what parts he likes to eat, and how to eat it. (This is one reason I dislike seafood; there seems to be particular ways you have to eat stuff and part of it you don't eat, but suck on? I don't know. I'll stick with burgers). He did hoover up all the potatoes though. He wasn't a fan of the sausage, but we seem to think it's just because he's somewhat unfamiliar with a bratwurst style of sausage. I think. My observations as a third party observer: The prices seem high to me. However, my partner tells me the quality is excellent and, by god, you do get a lot of food. Also, this cart takes longer to prepare the food than some of the other carts. I almost always get my food before she does, and by mutual agreement, we all eat as soon as our stuff is ready. This leaves her watching me eat to start, and then me watching her eat to finish. It's okay, just something to be aware of. I'd much prefer that the food be cooked to order, versus just hanging around in a pot all day to be ladled up when asked for and served rewarmed and overdone. All in all, I love that this cart is here, and my partner truly enjoys the food. It's also opening up a new world of food for my children and I can definitely appreciate that.

That history is exactly why writing this is so hard. Something has changed, and not subtly. On my last two visits, the beer arrived warm! Not slightly off-temperature, but noticeably, unpleasantly warm. The chowder that used to be a signature has a different flavor profile now; it tastes like a recipe was altered or a key ingredient swapped out. And the fish was undercooked. That's wild, since it's friend and they use to check the pieces. You could see where they did in the past. I was served undercooked fish!! I hoped these mistakes were a one-offs, but a pattern has emerged. I've now seen over the last year. I'm so bummed. I'm not alone in noticing. I've run into other longtime regulars who've said the same things unprompted. That tells me this isn't bad luck. I actually saw two other tables have issues when I was in last week. I couldn't hear exactly what, but I could hear the apology and the waitresses face. The wait staff is defeated. I want to be clear: this is not about the waitstaff. The front-of-house team has been as friendly and attentive as ever. They're doing their jobs well. Whatever has shifted is happening at the kitchen or management level, and they shouldn't carry the weight of it. Frankly, I think this is an owner or manager issue. Something is very seriously wrong. I've given The Depot real chances because I genuinely wanted to be wrong. This last visit was the breaking point for me. I won't be back for now, and that genuinely saddens me, because this place earned a loyal customer over many years. To whoever is making decisions behind the scenes: your reputation was built on consistency and quality. People in this community remember what this restaurant was. I hope you hear the feedback that's coming your way and treat it as the signal it is, not noise. The Depot deserves to be the place it used to be. I hope it gets there. If anyone finds things turn around, please leave a review. I want to go back. I'll be watching, but I just can't go there again. It's not been good for so many of my last visits. This isn't just because they don't chill the beer glasses, don't have the wine, undercooked fish, out if items, or funky chowder. It's all of it.

Anyways, we had called a few restaurants in the area hoping to get some dinner. This was the only place that said,"Yeah, we can seat you!" So, hubs and I make our way from our roadside motel (Studio 6, review will be posted) to downtown Albany. The parking situation was a little confusing, but we found parking a few blocks from the restaurant. We got a table, yay! The place is pretty cool, it was a bank back in the day. They have a nice limited menu which offers options for all sorts of food preferences. So, our table was full of carnivores, lol. Hubs had the special which was a smoked prime rib, daughter's boyfriend had the Wagyu Brisket burger and my college grad had the filet. I also had the filet. Everything was super tasty! I would totally recommend if you aren't in a hurry. The servers were great.

This place has been holding down the fort for what feels like forever, and walking in feels a bit like stepping into a time capsule where the coffee's hot, the plates are big, and nobody's in a hurry to reinvent the diner. One of my personal favorites is the patty melt simple, classic, and exactly what a patty melt ought to be. My daughter has her own favorite on the menu Monte-Cristo with fries that could probably feed a small ranch crew, That's kind of part of the charm here. The portions are big, the prices are fair, and when a lot of places in town have already shut their lights off for the night, Pop's is still there doing its thing. Now, I'll be honest it shows its age a little. A bit of cleaning and polishing here and there wouldn't hurt. But honestly, that worn-in feel is part of the story. If you're looking for something affordable, old-fashioned, and dependable especially later in the evening Pop's Branding Iron is definitely worth a stop.
